One of the best satirical comedies ever made. A total skewering of Hollywood. Everything works; the casting, jokes, etc., everything.
Fun fact -Robert Downey Jr does do the DVD commentary in character
I don't break character until the DVD commentary.

Context matters... RDJ's character was a commentary on/mocking of actors that believe it's ok to do that
Exactly. I see a lot of the “they couldn’t today”, and often times they absolutely could. Whether it’s Tropic Thunder or Blazing Saddles, if you think the movie couldn’t happen today, I’d argue you likely missed the big picture of the movie.
Not to mention literally making fun of the "method" of method acting that RDJ uses himself lol
That's not to say that there haven't been voices that have condemned the role, but on the whole I agree, the point of the role is that if an academy award winner could find a loop while like surgery instead of make up for black face, studios would jump on that rather than giving an unknown black actor a chance.

RDJ got robbed of an Oscar for this. At least he got nominated for it though! And no one was mad about this performance when it came out.
I mean, he was up against Heath Ledger's Joker. So I wouldn't say he was robbed. He was just unfortunate to be nominated against another legendary performance. But he's basically a lock to win for Oppenheimer this year.
Weirdly, today RDJ would get an oscar, what with all the focus on honoring the african-american contribution to Hollywood and #OscarsSoWhite.
The old man is played by Nick Nolte. Some good movies Nick Nolte was in were "Down and out in Beverly Hills", "48 Hours" and "The Prince of Tides".
RDJ said Stiller got all of the flack for Simple Jack that RDJ didn't get any for his role.
RDJ was awesome in this movie. His Oscar nomination was well deserved.

Tom was being goofy because he insisted on it. He wanted a part the complete the opposite of him. The massive forearms were his idea.
This is such an ambitious comedy. It could have easily tanked so hard, but they nailed it. RDJ is priceless in this, I'm glad his part got received precisely how it was intended.
Love this movie. RDJ plays an over ambitious method actor perfectly. I could see Jared Leto trying that if he thought he could get away with it 😂 another great hilarious movie to check out would be "Kung Pow : Enter the Fist"
The film promos playing at the beginning were a seamless transition at theaters. The pre-film ads went straight into these, and the confusion was palpable.
Stiller, DJr and Black all went on the MTV awards the year before this came out to semi promote this. We were all wondering what in the world these 3 would do in a movie and we were not disappointed. I saw this in the theater irt TWICE- I still don't miss a chance to watch reactors react to it. Hilarious movie then and now.
Fun Fact: Toby McGuire did win the best kiss award at the MTV movie awards for Spiderman.
You have to watch “the other guys”. One of the most underrated comedies of all time.

The Fatties preview was based off of Eddie Murphy's movie The Nutty Professor, where he plays his entire family, and during dinner, a couple of the family start farting. All of this was done while wearing fat suits and being outrageous characters.

Robert Downey Jr. was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in this. And there was some backlash. But it was not blackface. He played an egotistical Australian actor pushing the envelope by having a medical operation to portray Osiris. Just a thing over the edge that he had yet to do while earning his five Oscars.

Danny McBride who plays the special effects/explosives guy is a hilarious actor. He's a straight up country boy from Georgia Y'all should react to *Your Highness* with him and James Franco. It also has Charles Dance who plays Tywin on GoT.
Another take is that the party that is the butt of the joke will be the party to be offended by the joke. With blazing saddles, racism and racist people were the butt of the joke. Therefore, it was that group that were offended the most. The black people back then were not the offended ones,, but the white audiences were very offended.
A few black actors including Jamie Foxx said that Rovert Downey Jr was the only man that could still to this day with doing black face. He got that black face card anytime lol

Downey didn't really get any criticism when this came out. People weren't so sensitive then, I think. The Simple Jack thing did though. But later, when cancelling people became a thing, people started going back to Downey's character and accused him of blackface. But, luckily, it wasn't too bad really. People seemed to understand that it's obviously not real blackface, since he isn't making fun of black people but method actors, and Downey didn't make it worse by apologizing so it just went away.
This film made fun of the entire film industry. It was glorious.
Dammit people, comedy has no boundaries because it is subjective! If you feel guilty about enjoying something you're allowing the emotional baggage carried by someone who gives no fucks about you and yours to further their own broken world view. Lot of reactors don't don't pick up on Tom Cruise into much later in the movie. You got him right off the bat. RDJ was playing his character like a method actor because a lot of method actors stay in character until the movie is finished. This movie is funny AF

Robert Downey Jr got ZERO backlash from this role. This situation is based on reality. There were several actors since the 1930s who did this. This movie is making fun of the arrogance of a white Australian actor who thought that he could get away with playing a black man from the South.
Here's the thing though, RDJ played the role so well, that several black people like myself said... he reminds me of my Uncle or Cousin.

As a Black man that saw this when it came out, i was not offended by the Black Face in the least bit. However, of course I don’t speak for all of us. But for me, it came down to this: The usage of Black Face was acknowledged and served to be an example/spoof, of the ridiculousness of Hollywood actors taking these roles, and that point was reiterated by the character of Simple Jack. The whole movie was a spoof on the “out of touchness”, and cruelty of the industry. I’ve worked in the film/tv biz for over 20 years, so i found this movie hilarious on ALL levels. 😎
