As a Black man that saw this when it came out, i was not offended by the Black Face in the least bit. However, of course I don’t speak for all of us. But for me, it came down to this: The usage of Black Face was acknowledged and served to be an example/spoof, of the ridiculousness of Hollywood actors taking these roles, and that point was reiterated by the character of Simple Jack. The whole movie was a spoof on the “out of touchness”, and cruelty of the industry. I’ve worked in the film/tv biz for over 20 years, so i found this movie hilarious on ALL levels. 😎
Also they had Brandon Lee Jackson's Character Alpa, there to call Lazerous out every moment he could
to point out how none of this is cool and very offensive lol
There was a half-assed effort to “cancel” on RDJ for that, and lots of black people came out and said that this is the funniest shit they've ever seen.
omg here we go with this as a black man i wasn't offended comment to get likes... bro shut up... nobody was offended by this they were offended by the r word
One of the best satirical comedies ever made. A total skewering of Hollywood. Everything works; the casting, jokes, etc., everything.
Fun fact -Robert Downey Jr does do the DVD commentary in character
I don't break character until the DVD commentary.
God to know I have the dvd 😅 never watched the commentary.
@@jonrazo7912When the movie turns to the end Credit‘s he finally talks as himself again hahaha
This was the only commentary I had ever watched
@@SentientPotatoXIII That's a shame.
people confuse RDJ and calling it blackface, it was exploring the absurdity of method acting and making fun of the lengths some actors go to be 'method' and chose the most extreme form to poke fun of it.
People are soft these days, pathetic generation that would be conquered with ease by another Nation.
Yes, and people don't even understand what "blackface" is: blackface is a *_mocking_* portrayal of a *_stereotype_* . It means purposefully portraying a *_general_* stereotype, relegating everyone of that race into that characterization.
If someone plays a certain specific *_character_* or a certain real *_person_* then that's not blackface, and that's not wrong. But try to tell that to the zero-IQ uneducated crowds...
Note how factual, totally normal replies to this comment of yours were censored by Google/TH-cam. The replies are only visible if you change the viewing setting to "New"/"Newest first".
Google and TH-cam are evil, they're the enemy.
It was Blackface, but he was making fun of those types of actors. At the time of release, a few "cherished" actors were outed for doing blackface and they justified it by saying they were getting deep into their character's psyche.
@@lavinder11 No, it wasn't blackface. Kirk Lazarus had surgery to permanently alter his skin.
Blackface is the practice of non-black performers using burnt cork or theatrical makeup to portray a caricature of black people on stage or in entertainment.
Downey Jr. was expecting to get backlash for this role but he really didn't. Stiller was actually the one who got some backlash for the Simple Jack thing
Really? What a bunch of pu pu pussies.
yes Downey was so good everyone praised and loved the character.
I’ve never met one black person offended at RDJ at all for this… and To answer your question, he didn’t get backlash because of the context of the satire, and it was a different time.
I know I wasn't offended. I love RDJ in this movie. Heck. I love him in everything he's done movies and television. I even re-watch Doolittle just to watch RDJ.
The thing about RDJ was that he wasn't playing Black Face, he was a satire for all the stupid actors that did that crap for real. It was a mockery and the character was always being called out for it.
Dude I just realized that at the POW camp RDJ was speaking Mandarin like a black dude would, still in character. 😂😂
" like a black dude would." has to be one of the most stupid and ignorant things ive ever heard. Do you honestly think we all talk and act the same? Do you think black folks from the deep south act like black people from southside chicago? Do you think blacks in Brazil talk like black Americans? Do you think Blacks in Europe all act and talk the same and also act and talk the same as blacks from America? What the fuck are you even saying?
Im a dude, playing a dude, disguise as another dude. 😂
American actor playing an Australian actor playing a black Vietnam soldier playing a Chinese rice paddy farmer. Incredible.
The press tried to make an issue about RDJ's role but success has no orphans. As a "Black" man I find his performance hilarious. He is not denigrating or insulting. And the interaction with the "real Black" "actor" showcases his Hollywood pushes a certain stereotype.
I'm nominated RDJ to be recognized as an honorary "Black" man.
Context matters... RDJ's character was a commentary on/mocking of actors that believe it's ok to do that
Exactly. I see a lot of the “they couldn’t today”, and often times they absolutely could. Whether it’s Tropic Thunder or Blazing Saddles, if you think the movie couldn’t happen today, I’d argue you likely missed the big picture of the movie.
Not to mention literally making fun of the "method" of method acting that RDJ uses himself lol
That's not to say that there haven't been voices that have condemned the role, but on the whole I agree, the point of the role is that if an academy award winner could find a loop while like surgery instead of make up for black face, studios would jump on that rather than giving an unknown black actor a chance.
@@thefourshowflip nailed it.
@@robling1937 its comedy.... anyone who condems comedy or repeats that stupid ass narrative needs to stay the fuck away from comedy. Full stop.
The shock of "is he playing a black dude?!". Gold 😂
Back then…no real backlash…just nominated for an Oscar lol
Because people were smart enough to know he was satirizing method acting.
One of the funniest films of all time. So many layers of humor in this movie.
As a black man I thought this was funny AF
Same
31:44 "Now he's quotin' Nelly"
🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭
Nah man....both he and Nelly, were quoting the theme song from "The Jefferson's" TV Show
Yea I know what song he was talking about too lol
@@HeisenStark13
well i had no clue what song he was talking about...and i had no clue who Nelly was. Had to look it up.
Only Nelly I can recall was Nellie Oleson from Little House on the Prairie....but I am 52.
"aim for the bushes" "do go chasing waterfalls" ROFLMAO
batter up by nellly yall lol
Fun fact Robert Downy did the dvd commentary still in character
RDJ is always dedicated and one of Australia's best exports!
@@scipioafricanus5871he is American. 🙄
" is this supposed to be making fun of tom cruise?"......oh my lord, be ready for what awaits you 😂
Y’all thought Robert Downey Jr. did a good job, Tom Cruise stole the show in every scene 😂
RDJ is the best part of the movie 100%
Offensive things can still be made today, as long as you are willing to weather the BS that comes with it.
South Park still does it, Dave Chappelle still does it, Bill Burr still does it, standup comics still do it, it is still done at the comedy central roasts etc.
thank goodness!
No matter what you will get backlash bc there will always be those who don't understand. Satire done correctly is absolutely hilarious, smart, and even thought provoking. You actually need to think and look at things from all angles and see the absurdity that can lead to funny satire.
He took the G5, that was the owner's manual.. He jumped on his g5, flew to Vietnam, saved Tugg, then flew home.
yeah wow i didn't even think of that real time! love that he did that lol
I've seen this movie a thousand times and that possibility never occurred to me till until just now somehow Lmao
@@TheOctobersReact Heartbreak kid, Meet the Parents. And Along came Polly For Ben Stiller Films
2:22 i love that you guys have the added insight of knowing Robert as Iron Man, and Tobey as Spiderman to have that reaction to that scene. Makes it all the more funnier 😁
Downey got very little backlash in '08, even though he said at the time ( half jokingly), that he feared he would get shot at the premiere. Ever since then, at least once a year every year, someone starts a social media campaign to get him canceled.
It's going to start up again in April when The Sympathizer comes out. His intentions were pure, it was done brilliantly, he's uncancellable. One of the GOATs!
RDJ got robbed of an Oscar for this. At least he got nominated for it though! And no one was mad about this performance when it came out.
I mean, he was up against Heath Ledger's Joker. So I wouldn't say he was robbed. He was just unfortunate to be nominated against another legendary performance. But he's basically a lock to win for Oppenheimer this year.
Weirdly, today RDJ would get an oscar, what with all the focus on honoring the african-american contribution to Hollywood and #OscarsSoWhite.
Fun fact: the blonde actress who is speaking to Ben Stiller as the horse working guy is his real wife
17:02 Mr. Oct cracking up at Mrs. Oct's disgust is sending meee. My cheeks hurt 😂😂😂
Thanks, Mr. & Mrs. October! 🌴 This is hilarious. I saw it at the cinema with a group of friends.
You just watched a top 5 comedy of all time, in my opinion. God I love this movie.
RDJ faced serious backlash for this role in the form of an Oscar nomination.
One of the funniest and craziest action comedy movies ever made!
As a Black man, I thought that shit was hilarious! I Love RDJ's character the most! 😂
The old man is played by Nick Nolte. Some good movies Nick Nolte was in were "Down and out in Beverly Hills", "48 Hours" and "The Prince of Tides".
RDJ was awesome in this movie. His Oscar nomination was well deserved.
and they say African-American actors are robbed at the Oscars!
“The Farties” is spoofing “The Nutty Professor” where Eddie Murphy plays multiple characters lol. You guys should check it out sometime.
Also I’m pretty sure Mrs doubtfire (or something like that) with robin williams also played multiple characters
I'm so happy y'all are watching this film! My late Father was a Vietnam Era vet. This was his favorite movie! He and I would watch it and laugh so hard! You're Reaction brought back some good memories. Thank you both! ❤
That’s awesome!
I'm so glad yall had a fun time with this movie. Shit was hilarious and we will probably never see another movie like it again lol.
RDJ said Stiller got all of the flack for Simple Jack that RDJ didn't get any for his role.
Omg! You two laughing the whole time had me cracking up along with you. This movie is so good, I e seen it at least a dozen times. I wish they could make more movies like this.
Jamie foxx Said RDJ in this movie is one of the best things hes ever seen
Tom was being goofy because he insisted on it. He wanted a part the complete the opposite of him. The massive forearms were his idea.
No backlash, It was acting and comedy. People just enjoyed the movie and had the laughs.
Robert Downey Jr. Didn't get any backlash. He's invited to the cookout lol.
The film promos playing at the beginning were a seamless transition at theaters. The pre-film ads went straight into these, and the confusion was palpable.
This is such an ambitious comedy. It could have easily tanked so hard, but they nailed it. RDJ is priceless in this, I'm glad his part got received precisely how it was intended.
Love this movie. RDJ plays an over ambitious method actor perfectly. I could see Jared Leto trying that if he thought he could get away with it 😂 another great hilarious movie to check out would be "Kung Pow : Enter the Fist"
RDJ is perfect in this roll 🤣😂🤣
This is one of the best movie ever made❤ So glad you reacted to it 😊
RDJ was actually nominated for an Oscar for this performance, that's how much backlash he got. People weren't oversensitive snowflakes not long ago, before Obama, you were born too late to enjoy the good times I'm afraid.
Whoever said that Scary Movie was on the same level as tropic thunder was high AF
“Warm blood-flavored corn syrup.” It never gets old.
Meet the Parents is another good Ben Stiller flick. Very funny!
Stiller, DJr and Black all went on the MTV awards the year before this came out to semi promote this. We were all wondering what in the world these 3 would do in a movie and we were not disappointed. I saw this in the theater irt TWICE- I still don't miss a chance to watch reactors react to it. Hilarious movie then and now.
Fun Fact: Toby McGuire did win the best kiss award at the MTV movie awards for Spiderman.
Everyone around RDJ begged him not to do this movie, but honestly the black community really loved and understood his role - luckily Ben Stiller got the most controversy for playing Simple Jack
Great reaction! Y'all get it, I've seen other reactors watch this and they're all scared to laugh.
Lmao yall laughing got me laughing
23:01 I AM SAM is a movie those have watched have chosen to forget. I saw it, I can't remember how I felt about it at the time, but it is a Prime example of disability Oscar bait in the vein of 'My Left Foot' and 'Blue Jasmine '.
Black America kinda adopted RDJ. They got the joke.
You have to watch “the other guys”. One of the most underrated comedies of all time.
facts! Definitely FUNNY!
"Soup Kitchen"
The way Kirk shakes his head no in response to her asking if it was Lord of the Rings killed me
I HATE when people say *"this couldn't be made today"* that's a lie reactors love them, their subscribers love it. All you need is balls & let the snowflakes wine & the rest of us will sit back laugh & enjoy comedic movies
It 100 % could be made, the backlash today would probably be worse, so I doubt they'd be able to accumulate as well known of a cast.
It’s not about any of that. It’s about the fact that no one would pay to advertise on this movie today. That’s the point
@TheOctobersReact but the part that's not true about it things weren't as different back then or in the 60s. Mel Brooks faced the same problems when he made Blazing Saddles in 1974.
That is also true, but our entire society exist online now, but then there was no cancel culture so it was just a completely different set of circumstances. Now one tiny piece of movie can create a giant mob of online people, demanding action.. don’t get me wrong. I’m on your side but I definitely don’t think this movie could be made today in our political climate. It just couldn’t.
But if the climate changes, of course, it can be made
I think RDJ never got any criticisms for the whole black face thing, because it was so clearly not meant to mock black people, but instead just the opposite, to make fun of these pretentious big name actors who "transform" into their characters and make the news how deep they go for the roles.
This movie was straight up trashing Hollywood at the time, and it couldn't be more relevant today 😂😂😂😂😂 I love rdj in this, "SPIT THAT SHIT OUT MAN!!!" 💀💀💀
29:23 No one got offended, back then people were not cry babies like they are today. xD
Robert Downey’s best role ever! He was brilliant!
You two laughing at this silly movie just made my day ❤
Two things that make the Black face character work
1. the whole point is too point to that it is blackface and to satire and critique how they will give any role to white actors over Actors of colour
2. They make sure to have Brandon Lee Jackson's character there to call Lazerus out all the time
too let us know that none of this is cool
the movie at no point is saying this is a good thing, and the entire point is to both mock method acting and studio bigotry
lol there was no major backlash against RDJ. There were a few people that walked out of the movie theaters. I remember a few people walked out of my theater. Not necessarily black people. White people also. But that was not huge. Most people enjoyed and laughed at the movie and the character and there was an Oscar nomination.
Oh hell yes, I love this movie so much! As an aside, I've never seen or talked to anyone that was offended by this movie
RDJ actually didn't get any backlash until over a decade later, when people started to get all butthurt over it. Not to get too political or anything, but I'm half Black myself. I never had a problem with his character, neither did any of my family or friends. We all found his character funny, because the joke IS ON Lazurus and not mocking Black people. He overacts and can't drop character; which is making fun of method actors who get way too obsessive about their roles. It's also making fun of actors who've historically taken roles from ethnic people. When it's all said and done, his lines were hilariously executed. Unfortunately his performance has been somewhat sullied by overly sensitive people.
Glad you two enjoyed the movie! Great reaction
RDJ was brill and shout out to Ben Stiller for fantastic writing.
Oh yeah Ben Stiller got a lot of funny movies. Ya'll should watch There's Something About Mary, Zoolander, Dodgeball, Meet The Parents, Meet The Fockers. He's hilarious
U gotta check out the movie The Heartbreak Kid wit Ben Stiller 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Great reaction yall. RDJ is so good in everything he does. Hilarious in this one. As I black man from the 1st time seeing this I was a fan. Seen it maybe 10 times. If I’m feeling down and need a good laugh. This is of the ones I turn too. 😊👏👏😂🥰
Homie recognized the difference between coke and heroine in about a second flat I'm dying 😂😂
Bwahahaha
😂😂😂😂😂😂
I love this movie. Everytime I watch this and Hagover I just get sad because we don't have comedies anymore.
Ben stiller took the heat for simple jack everyone loved RDJ
RDJ was the best character in the movie
If you want more *Ben Stiller* do *(Something About Mary)* or *(Meet The Fockers)*
The biggest problem I had with RDJ in this movie was trying to decide exactly which one of my uncles or older cousins he reminded me of the most! 😄
Of the various serious, classic Vietnam movies, if you were to pick one, I'd say pick "Platoon." As for Ben Stiller movies, the following are all excellent: "Zoolander," "There's Something About Mary," "Meet the Parents," and "Dodgeball." The grizzled "Vietnam vet" in this movie is Nick Nolte, a relatively well-known actor, but I'd be surprised if you'd seen anything of his.
This movie is GOATED, truly an instant classic 🤘🏽 So many good people are in this thing and RDJ totally killed it. They don’t make shit like this now 😆
This movie could never be made now. Hollywood has lost whatever self awareness it used to have, which wasn't much to begin with. Ben Stiller has a fine satirical sense. You should watch Zoolander which is a hilarious send up of the fashion industry and the whole concept of the 'celeb'.
I admire her stance. She is socially enlightened. I’m am applauding slowly and now more quickly…thankgod for her.
Robert Downey Jr. was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in this. And there was some backlash. But it was not blackface. He played an egotistical Australian actor pushing the envelope by having a medical operation to portray Osiris. Just a thing over the edge that he had yet to do while earning his five Oscars.
Wait, y'all haven't seen Zoolander and Dodgeball yet?! You're in for the treat of your lives watching those movies! (Tropic Thunder is my favorite but both of those other two are right up there in the top 10 films of all time!)
Robert Downey's blackface here didn't get any backlash IIRC. Some people tried to stir shit up every now and then, but it never works. Fact is, it was self aware and was done satirically to make fun of Oscar bait Hollywood shit rather than making fun of blackface itself. Also RDJ was just awesome here.
IIRC, it was the making fun of mental illness that stirred up controversy. They just straight up turned it into a joke.
Also yeah, you need to definitely watch Zoolander. Another classic IMHO. :D
Robert Downey Jr was mocking a certain type of actor who is egotistical enough to think they can do blackface and win an award for it.
Linda hunt, white lady. Actually did that 20 years before this movie. Only she was playing an Asian man
Ben Stiller has a couple CRIMINALLY underrated movies, hes got one called "The Heartbreak kid" from the year before this movie that I think is legitimately hilarious and nobody ever talks about it
We all agree it’s done for the sake of comedy no matter the race 😭💯
Nice ACDC shirt, and Zoolander is hilarious.
RDJ didn’t get any back lash because we are not overly sensitive we realize it’s comedy and it’s freaking hilarious. People are over the top and cry about everything now. It’s so annoying how the world is now with actual canceling people, like what??
It's funny, the beginning "trailers" are really the way they introduce the characters, who they are, and where they are "coming from"
Zero backlash. This movie was and still is hilarious
Downey didn't really get any criticism when this came out. People weren't so sensitive then, I think. The Simple Jack thing did though. But later, when cancelling people became a thing, people started going back to Downey's character and accused him of blackface. But, luckily, it wasn't too bad really. People seemed to understand that it's obviously not real blackface, since he isn't making fun of black people but method actors, and Downey didn't make it worse by apologizing so it just went away.
Some people wanna complain about rdj doing this role..I'm a black man and I loved his performance thought it was hilarious and so many others feel the same way.. funny first time I seen this movie I didn't even know it was him
one of the all time best comedies
Back then there was no backlash. I remember walking out of Iron Man and seeing the poster for this. Freaking epic reaction in the theater opening weekend!
Tom's stipulation for being in the movie - big hands and he got to dance LOL
25:14 Bat is the chicken of the cave.
What a shocking time we live in when people feel embarrased to laugh at things that are absolutely funny. Funny is funny. Its all about context. None of it was malicious. Just Enjoy it. Your laughter made me smile big time.
Police Academy, Revenge of the Nerds, Major League I & II are a few more movies that would never see the big screen, today.
The Fatties preview was based off of Eddie Murphy's movie The Nutty Professor, where he plays his entire family, and during dinner, a couple of the family start farting. All of this was done while wearing fat suits and being outrageous characters.
Here's the scene th-cam.com/video/koTVfm31QUY/w-d-xo.html
Fun fact: Ben Stiller conceived the idea for this movie during filming for Empire of the Sun.
