Outstanding information provided here. I am grateful for you blessings back multiplied to you. After this I sold my MIO XL and lost 300 bucks on that mistake.
This hurt my brain at first, when comparing it to B's Ultrapatch manual. But then I mostly ignored the Ultrapatch manual, imprinted it in my brain than the signal runs into the back on A, and out the back on B, and that in normal, mode, patching to the front disconnects stuff from the back. And it all made sense. I wasn't sure why to use more cabling to connect speakers through the bay, but then I thought, well, maybe the audio inteface isn't active, and you just want to play a synthesizer through your monitors, and then that made sense too. Thanks!

I’m not sure what you saved, but wasn’t aware of the “no 2 inputs to a single devise”. While the Y harnesses jumped 2 channels not used at the same time, I do see where I could have really done damage in the future. Very thankful for this video!!
I always think it's just a bit paranoid. But given the price of electronics, especially stuff like $1000+ synthesizers, I don't think you want to take too many chances. As current is flowing in both directions, outputs from one device, Y'd to another device, will definitely be present at the outputs from the other device. There are cheap mixers, if you just need to mix a few channels.

When I was using MAC, I had 4 UAD Apollo 8 and 4 Adat expander for 64 inputs, all on the one thunderbolt port. None of them work anymore on Windows thunderbolt 4 motherboards as they are all thunderbolt 2 and they want 1100 AUD for one thunderbolt 3 card here which is a rip off. I decided I am just going to sell everything and buy a different interface and I ended up with the new MOTU 828 that was recently released. This is non expandable and my total inputs are now 28. Oh by the way I also had a 16 input digital mixer using the analog stereo out going to an analog stereo in of the Apollo. So between them all I had 78 usable inputs for synths. The digital mixer had total recall and it's own FX so it was fine to sub it out into just two ouputs, and because I used it for 16 channels of drums only, I would often then be also able to apply a UAD compressor to the overall drum mix if I wanted. But I digress.
I have to whittle down 78 inputs to 28. The way I always liked to work was have my template project with a midi track for each and every synth in my rack, and each synth having it's own dedicated input. In other words, I would load Logic which is what I was using at the time, click a midi track in my template project and I would get instant sound from the respective synth. This way, workflow was never hampered, ever, as everything was readily available with a simple selection of a track, and I had all the various editors set up automatically also so finding a sound inspiration was easy.
I have sold the digital mixer and am selling my UADs, and now only have the MOTU + plus a ferrofish a16 adat expander. This video is EXACTLY what I was looking for as I have never used a patch bay in my life.
Excellent work com-padre. So, I have an Audient EVO8 4in/out. If I set up with ins and outs, how do I connect a microphone. So A1-4 outputs and B5-8 inputs. No mike port now. Can the mike plug directly into the patch bay using a 1/4" balanced cable in the same way as, say, a synth? Love your simple explanations - well done.
Thanks for the informative video. I am currently setting up an 80s style guitar rack rig. I have a number of Rocktron preamps ( Prophesy, Intelliflex,) and effects as well as non Rocktron products (Digitech, Boss). I would like to be able to switch between units / preamps easily and quickly. I also have a Behringer mixer which I would probably require based on what the video shows. My configuration would be : Amp (Marshall 8008 and / or Rocktron Velocity 100) to effects/ preamp and out to a Marshall Cabinet. I have not seen any relatively simple answers to my question from other sources although your video solution seems to be be able to do the job. I am concerned /interested in the "two output / mixer solution " you mentioned. Can you suggest a solution using the BEHRINGER PX3000 ULTRAPATCH ( or ther model) ? Thanks in advance.

Depending on how many inputs your interface has, I normally dedicate 1 or 2 inputs to microphones “permanently” directly connected.

This confused me a little because I think i'm looking for half normaled. I have a bunch of samplers that I want to patch to(MPC One, MPC 1000, Octatrack) outboard gear (IE Elektron analog heat mk2, sp404mk2) all terminating into a mixer which will then feed my monitors . Would the main out of my sampler go to top ports 1 and 2 and out bottom ports on the back terminating in channels 1 & 2 on my mixer and the Heat inputs 1 & 2 be plugged into the back bottom 3 & 4 that way I can patch the front top one two to the bottom 3 & 4 to affect the signal coming from my sampler (say add saturation) ?
Very informative! I have a question, I hope you can help me. Can I connect each outboard gear that I have (effects processor, compressor, pre amp, digital reverb) to the patch bay, and connect the patch bay to only one channel (1/2 line 5/6 out) and decide which outboard gear I want to use by addressing the patch cables? Like for example connect a Compressor to the patch bay L/R in, L/R out, and in the front decide when to use it and address the output to the in of the Apollo. Thank you!

My setup is somewhat different and I hope you could help me . I’ve got focusrite 18i20 2nd gen connected to Apollo twin x via adat but, at the moment I got ferrofish B4000 connected to 18i20 . The outputs of my Apollo are going 1/2 to main monitors and 3/4 to mackie passive big knob for other monitors . I have a lexicon reverb unit and a mono valve pre amp/ compressor I’d love to use but I’m stuck so they’re decorating my studio desk at the moment along with my Alesis master link. Any help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated thanks 😊

I do wonder how this will work with my pseudo balanced cables. I have a bunch of long pseudo balance cables coming out from my old unabalanced digital synth modules to the balanced inputs of the interface. The patchbay would effectively nullify those wouldn't it?

Very interesting demonstration. I am sadden by the fact you can't patch all the keyboards to the patchbay like a mixer. I think I have to be more strategic because I have several options for an audio interface which each has their limitations and great points. Would be interesting to see how you would put together the MOTU 828x, Apollo Twin X and Avid S3 using 2 sets of speakers. The Motu has a lot of inputs, a variety of outputs. The Avid S3, you can connect hardware directly to it as well as mics which have great preamps and the Apollo almost seems unnecessary due to its limitation with inputs but I send the Monitor outputs to a Big Knob which has a Source A-B option to control the speaker monitors. part of my curiosity is if I use the Apollo as the main interface and send the signal to the Big Knob, since it is a passive device, am I loosing any quality? I understand that length of the cables may play an insignificant role but then again, it could be overanalyzing...... but if using the Apollo, the S3 seems useless also with respect to recording as interface. I would think to set the Motu's inputs to drive all of my gear in stereo as a mixer connecting optically to the Apollo. I am thinking I can patch all of the mic inputs from all of the interface to the patchbay and use the patchbay for choosing which interface I would like to use at whatever time... different sessions. A patchbay seems less important for some reason with respect to connecting gear for a grand stereo output but for ways to engage outboard gear like effects sends.... I don't think its necessary to patch a tape deck and DAT player if I can optically connect them to either 828x or Apollo.. Does this make any sense? sorry, just a whole scape my minds trapped in solving.... Any advice or perspective is welcomed. Thanks
I don't have a solution for you as I don't own any of the units you mention. Best is to view my videos on patch bays and see if any of them help you to figure out your setup.
Do you or anyone reading this have an answer for my dilemma? I am trying to attempt the same connection above if possible, only with hardware compressors and EQs instead of Keyboards....I have the same focusrite scarlett 2i2 gen 3 audio interface as in this video, that has a stereo out (one left TRS and one right TRS cable). I would like to route this left and right output to hardware outboard gear like a compressor or EQ etc, and back into the audio interface so that I can use the outboard gear (hardwarea compressor and EQ) to mix and master already pre-recorded tracks. But my issue is this...most of my hardware or any hardware thats available usually has a single mono TRS or XLR input and output. How would I route this signal with mono hardware on a patchbay like this? Like if my focusrite audio interface output goes into A-1 and A-2, would I need a stereo to mono TRS to go into the hardware? And then when it's mono out of the hardware, how does that corespond to the audio interface that's occupying 2 patch bay inputs if it's just a single mono cable? Please help!
You will need an audio interface that supports more than just a single stereo out like the 4i4 to be able to send audio out on top of your stereo main going to speakers. A patch bay can't do that for you. This also depends on the choice of DAW you are using.

POSSIBLE? Gentleman mentioned he had a mixer, he would be better putting the mixer outputs to the patchbay that way he has the flexibility to use either synth at the same time as well as other gear such as a microphone or even another instrument.

Well, look at how you have all your gear connected now, and how a patch bay can benefit you. You may not need a patch bay.
If i have a scarlet 8i8 and connect everything (synths and grooveboxes) to its 6 inputs do i still need a mixer?
If you have all the inputs for all your gear, then no.
I have an older effect rack (spring reverb) which is mono input and output. How do I use it with a stereo input from a synth and stereo output to a pair of speakers in a patch-bay ?
You need an audio mixer with FX/Aux send and receive.
Patch bay is not a mixer.
So I don't need inputs and outputs on my audio interface to handle my 6 pieces of hardware (compressors and eqs and effects) and my synthesizer? I have an Apollo Twin Duo and was wondering if I need to get an interface that handles more ins and outs or if I can use a patchbay and just route my audio interface L/R outputs and L/R inputs to/from there?
It all depends if you need to use all 6 at the same time or not.
Would you damage any equipment if you were to plug the speakers into the focusrite directly and not, as you have it setup here, through the patchbay?
If the speakers are power ones and their input is line level, then there is no reason for patch pay. They are most times designed to plug directly to audio interfaces. Patch bay is an option.

Probably not, as most pedals are unbalanced TS connections.

Either you can use an audio interface with 4 inputs instead of two, or use two splitters, or use a cheap mixer like Moukey 8

In this example, yes, you are correct. But, understanding how patch bay works, one can extend its use in the future.
So if your sending your combi jack inputs from the focusrite to the patchbay. How do you hook up a couple mic’s?
Due to the number of inputs on the Focusrite model shown, need to unplug the TRS jacks and connect the mics. Models with more inputs (18i20) you can dedicate some inputs for mic and some for the patch bay line level.

Depends on the type of gear you are connecting. But, balanced cables will always be better if both gears' are balanced.
why can't you just plug the monitors directly into the focusrite?
Of coarse you can, but that defies the purpose of the Patch Bay.
Sending line level directly to monitors is not available without a volume control between. I'm general you probably shouldn't connect your monitors directly to patch bay. Run it through interface or get some sort of monitor controller
I hear what you are saying. In my studio, I have several interfaces and a couple of speaker sets. The patch bay allows me to connect any interface's output to any speaker set. Setting your speakers' level to a nominal volume can avoid any sudden loud levels. Knowing your gear is vital. ☺

Might not want to spend more money. I tried to live without a patch bay, but in my case, it seemed like it was going to be more painful than it was worth to save the money. I realized that I could clean things up a bit, with a gizmo that's essentially a small table on top of a rack. Then I can move my audio interface to the rack, add a patch bay to the rack, get a rack shelf for my Mio XM, and it should work fairly well. I also realized I can by a rack with a small table on top. So hoping I can set two small synths on the table, then put an audio interface, patch bay, and shelf on the rack ( shelf for MIDI interface.) The tricky part is trying to figure out if I can use the patch bay, to put some guitar pedals in, patch synths to pedals, and pedals to audio interface. That seems possible. Or try to figure out how to use patch bay with audio interface to create some sort of FX loop.
why do you have to connect yourt speakers ?? cant you skip that ? and just start with with 1-2 Ins on intterface. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD SOMONE ACTUALLY ANSWER ME
Might want to watch my videos on Patch Bays to better understand the use of Patch Bays.
Connecting the Audio Interface outputs to the Patch Bay instead of directly to the speakers, it allows you to connect (patch) the synth directly to the speakers without having the Audio Interface on when you just want to play and hear, thus eliminating connecting and disconnecting cables.
In this video the Patch Bay is very under used.

No, but it gives you the option to patch the interface to another speaker or feed another audio directly to the speakers.

sorry but ama hav to go bak to fl studio for making beats .something is offset anytime am making a beat in bandlab.either my kick ,snare,or my instrument is playin on the wrong timming.i try to see if its a problem with bandlab ppv by making same beat in fl then importing it in bandlab but the fl beat plays more on time when i imported in bandlab ,the step sequence is not that auucrate for me either ,i always have to adjust the time so the drums can knock same time as the instruments.i created a loop in bandlab then imported it in fl studio but when i imported it in fl studio it was ofset didnt fit up with the markers or the grid.
