How can you not? A true gent, has worked around the world with great success and built some great sides at his best (and beat even greater ones), like forget that 4-1 vs Juve, his Malmo team knocked out Trapattoni's Inter in the European Cup ffs, that's like knocking out Pep's Bayern with Basel
@Enuff947 I guess it's more a figure of speech though I totally agree you can't be proud of a world cup 60 years ago or a world war you never fought in. Only of your kids achievements
@Enuff947 It's an "Americanism", isn't it: this obsession with pride. In fairness, I think the original post expressed pride in a shared identity - an identity that is likely too-often reduced to associations with poor education and an insular outlook
Owen Hargreaves didnt even live in England until the age of 26. By that time he had been in germany for 10 years. He lived in Canada before that. Of course he's gonna speak German.
Reminds me of the joke, Harry Kane was very relieved to hear his Bayern teammates all spoke excellent English, so he's excited to start English lessons next week 😂
Lineker played for Barcelona and has been speaking the language for over 30 years. He is on youtube interviewing Maradona & R9 in Spanish- and yes R9 can speak Spanish as well as Portuguese. Es la verdad!
Not really I would say, but he was in Sweden for a long time at the start of his coaching career (from 76-89) so probably more water eroding the stone…
Relatively speaking, yes. The grammar is easier than most languages, there’s quite a bit that’s familiar for a native English speaker. Pronunciation is a little tricky though, with a couple of odd sounds that we don’t have in English
It's actually quite an obstacle having English as your first language. You more often than not encounter arrogant people insisting on "practising" their English (*showing off their shit grasp of the language) when you work abroad. I'm sure you know the type...
@@andybliss5965 Yeah, I enjoyed writing that one. Glad you detected the ever-so-subtle way of bringing him back down off his high horse. You must also be British...

@@andybliss5965 Yep. I'm Welsh and, although I don't speak the Welsh language fluently, learned enough to have a decent degree of phonetic skill. I also taught myself French, lived over there for about a year and speak almost fluently. That doesn't stop the French responding to me in either a facsimile of Netflix American-English or some barely comprehensible nonsense whenever I'm out there. Is German is great, but it really has something uncanny to it. He almost sounds more like a native speaker who hasn't spoken German in a while than somebody who learned it as a second language. And then sometimes some Bavarian accent comes through, and sometimes some English accent. Really uncanny.
Usually the English struggle learning a new language when they go abroad. Much respect to Hodgson.
I wouldn't say they 'struggle' it's just the shear ignorance of not wanting to learn another language
I’m sure he’s conversational in Norwegian too.
I'm proud of Hodgson as a working class guy from Croydon, yes he's obviously got a strong accent when speaking French but such a good effort.

@Enuff947 was never interested in him as a football manager. I barely watch football. I meant as a linguist and probably as a human being.
Yes, his French is stwong

Respect for Roy Hodgson. His English accent is still obvious but overall he is understandable and functional in his non native languages.
Roy Hodgson is a beast.
The accent is getting ahead of himself 😅

Very impressed with Ray Hodgson.
Roy
Love Roy Hodgson, what a talented man.
But, love even more the twinge of Del Boy in all of his languages.
Brilliant 👏 😊
I remember that Hodgson once said he was struggling with Italian but then he even learned more languages. Respect to him.
Don’t forget, Steve McClaren speaks Dutch also 😅
He schpeaks it very vell
Also speaks bollox 😂😅
I love how Roy sounds like Roy in every language.
Gary learnt a few words to say during his BBC show. Don’t compare him to Dier who’s fluent in Portuguese.
Pretty sure he does speak good Spanish.
His Spanish is more than competent. B2 -C1 level. At least when he speaks.

Roy is amazing!
Top man roy. 💪🏼👍🏼😊
Didn't know FC Barcelona were based in Japan. Strange no one spotted that mother of all gaffes!
Damn Hodgson
Bechams Spanish is worse than my English
Roy's French is heaps better tan Joey Barton's
Beckhams Spanish is terrible. Mind you I think he is still struggling with English.
@@MikeC77 Some people aren't as gifted as others. For example, you wouldn't be able to ping a ball 70 yards onto a coin like Beckham could.

Atleast Beckham tried
Bale lol 😂 Gareth bale didn’t learn Spanish at all and he stayed at Madrid longer than Beckham lol

Is Swedish really easy to learn for native English speakers?

I thought English arabic and spanish was good💀 (NOT MUCH SPANISH)
Now we know why Hodgson was such a poor England manager? Swedish tactics. 🤔
That seems to be a big deal for the English

Hargreaves's German is certainly good, I even detect a slight Bavarian accent.

He moved there when he was 16 and stayed a long time, you'd expect him to speak it pretty well and probably with an accent.
