How BAD is Russell Westbrook Actually?

  • Russell Westbrook has had one of the more divisive careers in NBA history. The once fan favorite reinvented how we look at a player's production in the modern NBA. Fast forward to now, and Westbrick may be the most ridiculed man in sports. To understand the confusing legacy of Russell Westbrook, today we relive the dunks, airballs, turnovers, fights, and everything in between.

Honestly Westbrook could completely change his legacy by just making better decisions at the end of games. I first said that years ago and I think his newfound success as a role player might guide him in that direction. For too long, he’s been a million dollar athlete with a 10cent brain. But his ability to rip defences apart is still high level. If his basketball IQ evolves in this twilight of his career, I think he can become a champion.

To me Russell Westbrook is a Top 10 player of the last 20 years and a Top 50 player of all time. He has had an amazing career. The Lakers/LeBron/media's scapegoat job has negatively affected people who weren't actually paying attention and listening to narratives perception of his career. I believe he will have a career resurgence with the Clippers because they actually treat him as a teammate and he can just play. The games played after the trade deadline with the Clippers showed what he still has and in the playoffs he balled without Kawhi and PG13.

@@kayamerrick3907 In my defense, I think he'll probably get into the Hall of Fame, and he'll deserve it, based on his impact on the game. Sort of the way Allen Iverson deserves it. They were both better at basketball than 99% of most players.
But so many possessions ended with a shot that shouldn't have been taken, or a lost dribble, or a pass that went out of bounds or into the hands of the defense. In so many games, the ball stayed in his hands instead of going into Durant's, or Harden's, or anybody else's. In so many games, he stayed in the backcourt to snag a rebound off a missed free throw instead of moving out to catch an outlet pass. In so many games there were 100 mph drives with off balance shots that bounced off the rim, or mid-range jumpers with 18 seconds on the shot clock, or threes that clanged off the rim.
And I get it. A great player has the confidence in himself and his shot to feel when to take it. A great shooter has no conscience, and Russ could get hot and light it up some nights. And Durant really is a passive-aggressive snake. A player of his talent should have had the balls to say "Give me the damn ball," instead of accepting how things were for so long. That is on him.
But there should have been more awareness from Russ that being the alpha might not win his team a title. Magic Johnson knew when to take the ball coast to coast and when to dish to Kareem or Byron Scott or Jamaal Wilkes or even to Kurt Rambis to get him involved. Isiah Thomas was an enormous egotist, but his passing made his team unstoppable.
All the assists and rebounds are great. Good for him. But look at the obvious comparison, Oscar Robertson, who was close to a triple-double a game for most of a decade. Those teams did not win titles, despite being pretty solid. He only won in '71 when Kareem was there and his points and rebounds dropped. Granted, Russ's triple double seasons happened once KD was out of the picture, but he was high in all three categories while KD was there. He was acting like the guy who had to do it all, even when he was playing with two future Hall of Famers.
Finally, he let a rule change turn him into a bad free throw shooter. He went from the mid-80's when he could wander off to mid-court between shots to the mid-60's when he couldn't. A superstar getting worse at free throws as his career goes on? That never happens. Karl Malone walked into the league and made fewer than half his rookie season. By year 4 he was in the mid 70's, where he stayed for 15 years. Russ's inability to overcome this really stands out.
If you like the guy, like the way he plays, like his brash, take-no-prisoners attitude, then fine. You're going to stick up for him.
No rings, though. And if he ever gets one, it won't be because of him, it'll be because he found the team that could win and submerged his ego enough that they could. That's not a thing I see happening.
TL;DR he's a great player who's overcome a lot and had a great career for which he'll be remembered, but several glaring weaknesses have kept him from winning it all, and for someone that wants to win so much, you'd think he would fix those weaknesses.
