Although it may be an old video it is still a satisfying one. The couple in question is not young and the wife may be facing a disability that causes her to be surprised by the same answer. Despite their challenges, they appear to be lovely people doing their best to live their lives to the fullest.
We definitely NEED a part 2 where we see the rest of the treatment and the results!

This lady sounds so on the ball and alert. This toenail was growing like this for a very long time. She needed her Daughter to tell her to get some help for her husband? Seems very odd she was able to get him there and to the hospital but couldn't figure out he needed to see a foot Dr.😮

Yes you can thin it too much. The nail bit should always be moving and shouldn’t be allowed to get too hot. If at any time it gets hot or sensitive you should stop (or tell the person filing to stop).

October 29 2022 is when part 2 was uploaded.
My finger nails are average, with the exceptions of ridges. I buffed them and they thinned out the ridges now gone didn’t matter. They started to split easier as if made easier.
This is so sad and to think she was neglected so many years! Check your elderly loved ones feet! Dr. You are so amazing! How in the world could he take the pain this toe had to be giving him? So so sad!😢
Johnathan, you are a fabulous practitioner. I think you do a wonderful job keeping the patient and family members occupied by telling them why you're doing the treatment. I think it helps the patient relax so the treatment can be done.

I am a retired RN in the US. I don't know the rules in Canada, but during my education in the 80's, we were told never to cut patient's toenails. We were told to refer the patient to a podiatrist or foot specialist. So, it's not that nurses don't care but that we were to make sure the correct person did the job. I also don't know if this has changed in the intervening years.
2 things to think about
1 liabilities how much insurance does a nurse have
2 the doctor doesn’t want you to cut into his money.
So true we are still told not to cut the person's nails as nurses
I too am a retired RN in the US. We were taught to not cut nails unless we had a doctor's s order. But we were not taught how to do it properly and it was difficult to find proper instruments. But my path did take me to both instructions and tools and doctors who gave orders for specifically me to trim nails. We were in a rural isolated area and I did this for skilled nursing home residents under the oversight of doctors. It was very gratifying for the residents and their families .
@fivecivtrb I was trained in the early 2000's and also did the nails for my patients in an assisted living facility.
I also helped my dad with his after he had bi-pass surgery (and he was diabetic.)
Now I do my hubby, and he has a couple nails that would do this if I let them. He also has callous' from hell that I literally have taken a scalpel to!!! Used a scalpel on my own heels on a regular basis too.
I also purchased an Apope sander for our feet for after we get the bulk off to smooth things out. Purchased a second one for traveling.!!!😊
I'm a newer nurse and we are not able to clip nails. I did find a foot care certification from the WOCNB. It's about $2k with classes, clinical, and the certs. I'm considering getting it and seeing what I need to do to be able to start a business. I want to start with group homes and nursing homes.

Im an RN, and im amazed how many people dont know what a Peditrist or Chiropodist is, and they are elderly or disabled and can't work on their own nails. As a nurse, i was always sending patients and their family to a local foot specialty.

Doesn't surprise me they didn't help him. I have systemic lupus so extra inflamed joint fluid in all my joints. Ganglion cysts in my fingers, toes, wrists, spine, elbows, and bakers in knee. Some don't hurt. Cysts under my toes do. When I stand it presses to the side. My feet look well cared for and clean. Yet ive asked several doctors to drain and remove sac. They all ignore me. Popped 3 myself. They came back. Burned a lot. Was clear jelly but can't get sac. Bothering me again and really want them removed.
You're such a kind Doctor. You help everyone. You take your time and comfort them. You make them feel less ashamed. You relieve so much pain for them. They always look amazing after.
A plastic surgeon will remove the cysts, and they make sure they get rid of it all so it doesn't grow back. I have issues with them, and those are the only doctors who will remove them properly.

They do it here in Northern Ireland. It’s pretty expensive but they do it.

I have psoriasis under my toe nails and they really hurt, i use a small dremmel to reduce the thickness for easy cutting. This is my greatest fear

In all of the ERs I have worked in, we never have clippers strong enough to handle any thickened nails. It makes it hard to do much of anything.

It's so sad that feet fall into these conditions in the elderly. It can be hard for the elderly to get down there and clip their nails. Great you could help them out.

The method using a dremel carving a channel across the thick nail, before using the nipper, seems o work really well for super thick nails. I do work about the dust tho.

I’m sorry, but I do not believe this gentleman regarding there being no bleeding or blood on his socks or the nail being pulled up at some point. I think he may have forgotten, but with as much of the nail being detached, it had to have bled at some point. I’m so glad he’s going to get relief from this pain. I’ve been there myself.
