I enjoy the fact that both disgaea 2 DHD’s Axel mode, and the disgaea 5 dlc for him both confirm the canon that he is actually one of the strongest demons in existence, merely due to his adamant obliviousness alone. He was definitely at his best with disgaea 2 though.

That being said, strictly focusing on the writing for Axel as a character, I do think 5s dlc is the only other occasion where they really got axel right.

I can't even comprehand how did they manage to butcher Axel's character in D4 who used to be so much more than a loser who gets his ass whopped by every opponent he faced (I mean cmon, earlier he even managed to defeat Laharl in Axel Mode)

But I’m well aware Axel is quite well written in Disgaea 2. I would go as far as to say that the only reason he was in 3 and 4 as main role simply had to do with how popular he was in 2. And because he didn’t play off of the main character too well in those games, it would make sense he’d feel bland by comparison. In 2 particularly, he is a cleverly written goofball of a character. And his general weirdness and proclivity for causing trouble in unusual ways getting positive use towards the end of 2 is great. He weaponized his flaws in a way that…. May as well have been the only reason Adell and crew make it to Zenon in the end.

So i havent played Disgaea in years...and this song randomly came into my head for no reason some day...and i knew exactly where it was from. Weird how some things work uh?
He may be a bit of a stubborn blockhead, but hes no slouch when you actually throw hands in Disgaea 4. Because he (and the A-Virus victims) prioritize Fist weapons along with having a naturally high affinity towards Attack and Speed, he can hit like a truck and avoid yours without some serious Hit grinding, Glasses, high Marksman Innocents, or even just find ways to SLOW HIM DOWN. And when i say hes Fast, i mean in the base fight at the end of chapter 6, he has nearly 1000 speed at level 50-60, with around 10k HP. This means he can actually tank and deal with heavier hitters like Fenrich and Fuka, who bith can use Axes to drop his mediocre defenses- if they can hit him (Axes has a trait where their high damage and defense shredding is traded with decreasing Hit chance and Character speed). All this to say that Axel himaelf, deapite being who he is, can be a formidable threat. And this is considering hea foufht as the end boss of what is considered the "Black Blood Demon" zone, as in, demons who are capable of being Boss types to Overlords themselves.
if only he retained his original disgaea 2 character in disgaea 4. it would also have been cool if one of his techniques references the flute he got in disgaea 2 and have him summon a horde of rifle demons.
After finishing DHD, im confused as to how he even lost to Adell and Rozalin when they first met. I know hes more of a joke character but he shouldve been OP as hell before that encounter. And yea, him using the flute to summon monsters, or how he would most likely say "his fans" would be awesome
Have to admit ,he's the one with the most development in Disgaea 2's story. Playing the game make me feel like watching him grow instead of the love story that probably won't go anywhere for episodes. He was pathetic to the point it's pitiful. He's now still a pathetic guy ,but in a cool and hilarious way. I guess if you start off at rock bottom ,the only way to go is up ,huh.

I'm almost certain that the dub changed his name to Axel as a reference to Axel Rose, the lead singer and guitarist of Guns 'n Roses. Certainly sounds better than whatever "Akutare"/"Octalley" is supposed to mean. (Maybe there's a Japanese pun in that name that I'm missing somehow)

So by puting the romanji of Akutare into google translate, it gave me the word “Actare”, and by searching what it meant, google gave me the definition of the word “Actor” , which… does sound similar phonetically speaking So I think the pun is just Akutare = Actor because thats his fucking job Edit: i saw another comment here stating that the Aku part means “evil” and Tare means “worthless” (and just writing Akutare in google translates it to “Bad Guy”) , again, ties pretty well to his character
Why on earth this wasn't a character that ended up joining your party during the main story I will never know. The lineup was so weak and forgettable even with Etna. Axel would've beefed it up in several dimensions it was lacking in.

That's the problem with the Disagea games in general. For some reason, with the exception of Zetta every character gets Flanderised as soon as they leave their original game. With Axel, at least, they had a reasonable excuse. They later revealed that Evil Pink, one of his companions, was held hostage by the government. He kept going along with them, then got Lost In Character. The game tried to explain this at one point, but it was too downplayed and was missed.

I think there's a mistake in the romaji lyrics. After the second half, what I hear him singing is not "Bad End ni tsukaru otoko ni michi", but "Bad End ni hikari otoko ni michi", more or less.
I'm almost certain that the dub changed his name to Axel as a reference to Axel Rose, the lead singer and guitarist of Guns 'n Roses.
Certainly sounds better than whatever "Akutare"/"Octalley" is supposed to mean. (Maybe there's a Japanese pun in that name that I'm missing somehow)
Hello there fellow axel fan, your question was intriguing and thus made me do some research!
So by puting the romanji of Akutare into google translate, it gave me the word “Actare”, and by searching what it meant, google gave me the definition of the word “Actor” , which… does sound similar phonetically speaking
So I think the pun is just Akutare = Actor because thats his fucking job
Edit: i saw another comment here stating that the Aku part means “evil” and Tare means “worthless” (and just writing Akutare in google translates it to “Bad Guy”) , again, ties pretty well to his character

Why on earth this wasn't a character that ended up joining your party during the main story I will never know. The lineup was so weak and forgettable even with Etna. Axel would've beefed it up in several dimensions it was lacking in.

why does it feel like axel took a turn for the worse regarding character in the 4th game. like compare dark hero axel from 2 with warden/president axel of 4 and tell me who's the better character.
That's the problem with the Disagea games in general. For some reason, with the exception of Zetta every character gets Flanderised as soon as they leave their original game.
With Axel, at least, they had a reasonable excuse. They later revealed that Evil Pink, one of his companions, was held hostage by the government. He kept going along with them, then got Lost In Character. The game tried to explain this at one point, but it was too downplayed and was missed.
Carinthium i hope that someday axel can revert back to disgaea 2 axel and get back some respect. imagine if he still has the flute and with it summon the vedime rifle demons and acquire his own personal army.
lunerblade13 Based on the response to Disagea 4's Axel he'd probably have his Disagea 2 personality back. However, it's very unlikely Nippon Ichi would give the same character a third appearance.

lunerblade13 Disagea 2 was a special case, as the very idea of a new cast was experimental. Axel's popular, but he's not as popular as Laharl, Etna, or Flonne and even they usually only get cameos.
