Rustolium Home 2 Step Floor Paint Review and Removal - Costal Fog - Windsor Gray - Tile Paint

  • I used Rust-Oleum's home 2 step paint (costal fog, windsor gray) with a matte top coat on my kitchen and dining room I would not recommend it for a few reasons...
    -colors not accurate, I use coastal fog it was very cool and almost white I took it back to Home Depot after applying the first coat they gave me a free gallon of Winddor Gray because the color was so off from the picture, windsor gray was still extremely light and more of a cool gray.
    -the paint scratches easily, I followed every step correctly and my dog's nails scratched the paint. my dog's nails are not sharp I use a dremel to grind them down. I could easily scratch the rustolium home 2 step system with a fork or any sharp object.
    -the 2 Step system makes it harder to patch any scrapes or scratches
    -this paint is not water resistant/becomes weak when wet
    -not kid or pet friendly
    -show dirt more than a normal tile floor, this is not Rust-Oleum's fault but I think it is definitely something to consider if you have kids or pets.
    -The two-step system is more expensive because you have to buy a base coat and a top coat.
    -rustolium home 2 step system is very time-consuming to apply, we could not use our kitchen for 3 days.
    -it is even more time consuming to remove.
    ------
    I do think it would adhere better to a wood floor but even then I would recommend using a porch or patio paint because It would be more water resistant and only a one-step process.
    Okay for small rooms with little foot traffic would not recommend in a large space or a bathroom with a shower especially if you have kids or pets. If I could go back I would not use a 2 Step paint system as it takes significantly longer and is much more difficult to paint. after all this I will just wait to replace my tile floors.
    To remove I used 3 different paint scrapers all bought at home depot. It took me probably 10 hours to remove a total for 300 square feet. I HIGHLY recommend using a wet towel over the paint for 3 hours before scraping it up. it makes it 90% easier to remove.

    I would suggest to everyone to create an extra step by applying two coats of INSL-X Stix Primer sold at every Benjamin Moore location. This is a bonding primer and the best on the market. It's not cheap it's $65.00 a gallon or $33 a quart but with a good clean, a proper sanding, then another good cleaning followed by two coats of Stix Primer with a light sand and cleaning in between coats the Rustoleum Floor Paint and Top Coat will adhere perfectly. Sure it's more work and expense than prescribed on the box but the goal is to do it right the first time and not have any drama after it is applied. If you think adding the primer and cleaning step is too much then I hope it turns out good for you because having to remove a poorly applied application of this type of product would be the worst possible experience.

    As an update for everyone because I've gotten several questions with this video. I followed all the steps. I did 3 top coats each 24 hours apart. I really do think this would be fine for a low traffic area like a bathroom or a laundry room as they would not receive much foot traffic. My kitchen and dining room are quite large and lead into the backyard. Because of the size of the room I feel like my dogs were able to build up speed. This is why I think they were able to scratch the top surface so easily. This probably would not be an issue and something like a 10'x10' laundry room or a bathroom as they are much smaller. My dogs could not scratch all the way through but they still left discoloration scratches on the gloss of the top coat. I felt like this and the one solid color made the floor look very unappealing. I also have a lot of windows my dining room is basically a sunroom surrounded with three walls of windows that all flood into kitchen and dining area. I imagine all the natural light makes scratches much more noticeable.
    I was scratching it with a scraper which is designed to be able to scratch things so it's like the most extreme version of a scratch possible but I still think that I could take the corner of a Lego to it and scratch it pretty easily. I'm almost wondering if I got a defective product because I've got several comments saying that they didn't have this happen. Nonetheless this is what happened with me. I assure you I did all the steps correctly and was devastated with all of it not working out. I normally would never even bother to make a video like this but I felt like this was just such a nightmare. The $100 I spent, all the work that went into it, not being able to use my kitchen for 4 days and then having to scrape everything off. I want to prevent this nightmare from happening to other people. If you are set on painting your floor and it's a large room and you have kids or large dogs like I do I would say look into using an outdoor patio paint with several coats of poly. I had a friend that did this after my disaster and her project turned out great. I personally ended up buying a large rug which distracts from the ugly color of the tile. I hope this video is helpful to people considering it and that anyone who uses this product has a much better experience than I did!

    @ 5:01, the instructions state to test your floor for adhesion by painting a small area, then razor an X into the area, and then apply a piece of duct tape to the X and pull up. If 10%+ pulls up you need to better prep your surface. It looks like your surface seriously fails adhesion. The under side of the paint looks like there is grit from the tile. Sand everything down, thoroughly clean, and reapply. It will work for you

      I am having the same issues with the floors system as she is (scratches and discoloration ) I was quite disappointed with the product and was about to scrape it off until I see your comment … I applied only 1 layer of the top coat! I will do a repair on the scratched surfaces and apply x 2 more layer of the top coat and will check back with you in a few month to let you know if it helped !

      Yes, I did It didn't scratch as much as the final product but also I was not scratching anywhere near as hard as I was with the scraper. I did end up sanding the floors, I maybe could have sanded them better possibly that's where I went wrong 🤔

    A lot of people saying she didn’t follow instructions just dont listen. I also went though and followed the instructions step my step. But she’s right if it’s in a kitchen or bathroom it’s a mess even with the top coat it gets scratched. Its not a good product in my personal opinion it was the worst think I could have done to my tile. I’m not attempting to remove. It’s not coming off as easy as this video but also not exactly scratch proof. Glad I did it in our guest bathroom and not in the master or the kitchen.

    I have very similar experience with the color steam gray and it is almost like plain white. Agree with you that retouching surface is very noticeable. And the last thing is the ugly scratches. I almost want to paint again thinking that maybe 2 coats not enough but you painted 3 so maybe I will look into other options.

    Although they say there’s no need for sanding or stripping but it helps a lot with the primer to bond to the tile as tile is non porous. Strip the tile first with electric sander. Do multiple coats. That clear epoxy needs to cure the whole process can take 7-10 days. That way it lasts much longer. But anyways the paint is so expensive that I’d rather lay LVP on tile.

    • @meikazack3422
      @meikazack3422  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I probably would have had much better results if I had done all that but yeah your right at that point I'd way rather just do lvt or even replace the tile.

    Meika, your failure is not due to Rustoleum's product. You didn't follow the instructions that were provided, and by the look of things, you didn't prep the surface of the substrate. I thoroughly, cleaned and de-greased, while scuffing with 60 grit my tile floor. I followed by mopping three times with clean water, and then let it dry for 8 hours. First coat was let dry overnight. Second coat was let dry 6 hours, then top coat after. You have to let the product dry, cure. 72 hours!!!!!!! before moving your stuff back

    • @pamelaw2606
      @pamelaw2606 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Weird re: letting the coat dry overnight. All of the instructions say you must use the entire product within 6 hours.

  • @michaelflowers6048
    @michaelflowers6048 ปีที่แล้ว

    It sounds like you didn't clean and prep the floor properly (reason it is flaking) and didn't apply the topcoat (reason it scratches easily and also the only reason a wet rag would make it come up easier). Any paint will scratch with a sharp object

  • @jeckbowl4360

    I’m so surprised to see this failed for you! I did mine 2 months ago on bathroom floor with same tiles. I prepped by deep cleaning no sanding. I did the tape test & it didn’t peel so I moved on & painted the floor with step one I used white but I definitely have heard that the colors don’t come out as in samples. Anyway I’m in Georgia so very humid. I let it sit for a day then dud second coat. I was able to walk on it within hours with socks on. However I waited another day to be safe & I stenciled with regular satin paint. Once it dried I used the step 2 in high gloss clear. I had plenty to do another coat & was going to however the directions said it was best to use just one top coat so I left it at one. It looks amazing & is hard as glass. I don’t think I could scratch it if I tried. So I’m really stumped by your experience. The only difference is I used high gloss step 2. It’s actually so hard I’m considering using paint I have left over with the step 2 high gloss clear for my small guest bath because it’s that tough. I wish I could post a picture. I guess there could be other variables as well.

    Did you sufficiently clean the floor ? The appearance of areas that did not stick next to areas that did stick tells me you did a poor job of cleaning. The fact water softens the paint tells me you did an equally poor job of applying the top coat which is the part of the job that is most important to the durability. Why have other people not had the results you did?
