  • Opening up the air box on the Hawk 250. I up jetted the carb too, there is a noticeable difference. Took it up to Torrington for a test ride
    Hawk motor is designed from a 1975 CG125 Honda, single cam single lobe engine

    I completely eliminated the airbox. Purchased a 2 inch elbow and a straight run of stainless exhaust pipe and welded up a section for a K&N Cone filter that resides where the airbox used to be. Welded on a small tab and drilled and tapped the frame to attach it with a small section of silicone hose to attach it to the carburetor. I also welded on a small section of 3/4 inch pipe to plug-in the breather for the crank case. Made a big difference with the Honda exhaust upgrade and a 115 main jet for the carburetor. Perhaps I will do a video to show the work I performed. Big difference in power, going uphill in fourth gear pulls well and continues to accelerate. I also just adjusted the valves which were tight.

    A utility knife cuts easily through the plastic on the air box. It's a whole lot easier than sawing with a dremel with a lot less mess.

      I grabbed the plastic with needle nose pliers and just pulled it out. It was literally that soft. I'm running a foam pod filter now though. 115 main, 45 pilot, screw 1 -3/4 turns out. Stock exhaust.

    I did that upgrade to my bike and I had a car k&N filter that I cut the same measurements of the stock filter it work Perfect for my bike.
    But then a month later I decided that I wanted to install a cone filter instead.
    Those upgrade work you just have to think out of the box!

    i just got mine registered in nc in durham at thr northgate mall dmv ahad no problems at all. just noticed people having problems in nc. but thank god i dint bout to do my air box mod and exaust mod and ill b gxood till i get my carb amd this bike is the shitnso happy with my first bike purchase

      maybe its because its a late 2016 model maybe its domething that rps got figured out last year on the paperwork because as far as i know about a year ago u could not reg in nc even if the body type says motorcycle i registered iy as a moped tho.

    I watched this video a year ago and the mod has been on my mind.
    I always thought about the mesh screen. But this is the first time I heard "mouse problem"
    That's funny but I can now understand why you used the screen.

    Is it ok to put an performance filter other than the cone filter on a new carburetor. Where would the air hose from the motor go to?

      Yes, the main reason I like to stock air boxes to keep the heat from the motor away from the air inlet, they usually make a small filter for that breather off of the engine

      +Jesus Rubalcava an engine is an air pump, the more air you can get in and out of it, the more power!

    I've been researching and watching vids on these hawks I'm really thinking about pulling the trigger on one they sell it here in Houston 1500 bucks ttl and a helmet all included in the price. i noticed none of these vids have thumbs down 👍 was just wondering how the bike holding up and what mods would you recommend from the start?

      Texas is where they originate. RPS motor sports is the importer and drop shipper. Chinariders.Net has a list of good dealers. I bought mine from txpowersports and had no issues. Hawkriders bought his from motobuys. I hear they are slow with the MCO (manufacture certificate of origin)

    Just curious. Where'd you get the jet from/type? I plan on doing the same mod to mine. I think I'm at a similar sea level. I live in NH. Great video. The quality is very good too. Keep it up!

      Wesam Aljariri you can leave the lid off but it would be. Noisy when you throttle.

    know when I went over a log it bent the stud that holds the rear brake spring return and I welded a new spot for it poor dezine

      Yes, some people have even removed the lid totally

      They're pretty open. Some put cones on and had issues, others said worked fine

    Just did this to mine this weekend, along with putting in the new jet (110). I had some differences with mine I wanted to throw here for anyone in the future. My carb was a keihin carb and didn't have the tamper proof screws or the covered idle mix screw. I bought a Mikuni 110 jet from a local shop just to see and, wouldn't you know, it fits but doesn't seat 100%, but I'm confident enough in the fit to leave it in there. Once I did the airbox mod, I had to turn out my idle mix screw a whole turn or so to keep it from bogging on quick throttle pulls. It still can be made to hesitate a bit with a quick throttle, but I'm reluctant to turn the mix screw out any more.
    That said, would you recommend changing the pilot jet at all or is there a different adjustment I should make to remedy this bogging on a quick throttle pull?

      Hi, usually if it boggs on wide open throttle pulls its the main jet. the people who have used the aftermarket keihin Carbs end up using the 115 jet. I think they also changed the pilot jet too, but usually the air mixture screw will make up for a pilot jet that is off a little but they say if you have to go out more than 3 turns change the pilot jet. I would try a 115 main first IMO.

      MotoCheez hey man me again, was curious if a filter to go on the carb would help the life/longevity of the carb, and if so how often would a person have to change out the filter?

      +Taylor Freezy there is a filter strainer in the tank, but it's not very fine, a filter isn't a bad idea, probably last thousands of miles...

    I wonder what was the deal with those tabs on the air-box you removed ? They definitely weren't needed , and I bet it breathes a whole lot better now without them ! You should see about a k and n air-filter for it next if you haven't already . They last forever and will open it up even more : ) Thanks for posting : )

      +brad bully I could see if it were a CV style carb, then you need a certain vacuum to run right, but this has a manual slide.

      +brad bully I believe it was for emissions. I wounder if you'd have to up jet with the K&N since there's better air flow.

    Unfortunately this mod no longer works for the newer versions of the hawk. I just got my 2020 Hawk 250 a few days ago and did what I could on it while finding out that my air box is locked down with two metal welds. Taking out the screws does nothing for me and I can't get it out without having to get more technical. I'm not sure if this is the same for everyone else.

      It's the carburated version? I know the EFI model is different but the holes are enlarged already.

      @@MotoCheez Yes it's the carbureted version. I'm not sure why they did it the way they did but I've compared it to the one in your video and yours didn't have the pieces blocking the air box from coming out. Mine has two pieces welded on that block the air box from coming out. I could cut them off if I wanted to.

      Just drill a bunch of holes in the top of the air box cover lol. It'll accomplish the same thing.

    The 2021 TBR7s have a different, 2 part top to the airbox. The breather holes are on a round rubber thing on the very top and there's no good way to cut it. Any suggestions? I don't want to delete the airbox.

    A downside to the 2020 Brozz is have to take 2 nuts off under the seat. And to make access easier, have to take 4 bolts holding the rear tail light and fender on :-(
    What little storage space is left there is taken up with remote start and alarm components. I may try to make a quick disconnect seat if I can figure out how to add more storage space under there.

      Jose Martinez I've heard that a small engine filter is that same size. Try and match it up at a decent small engine parts place.

      MotoCheez it looks like for the 2020 models you don’t have to do the mod, the box comes with no plastic pieces blocking the intake. Atleast mine did

    Cheez maybe you know maybe you don’t. I’m looking to use stock airbox w Mikuni carb on a hellcat. I don’t know what hose I can use or if there’s a better method of hooking it up. The carb has to face the front. Any suggestions?

      Maybe some pre shaped radiator hose? See if local autoparts store will let you look what they have for radiator hose

      +Caik Otoni no, CT doesn't like them, a few have gotten through, probably if you do a VIN check first, I brought it to inspection and they said it's not in the kist... So I did the Vermont registration method.

      +Caik Otoni BY it's easy, go online and fill out form at VT DMV, print it and send in mail in with proof of insurance, a bill of sale (don't send MCO or title) and reg fee and taxes. Their DMV site easy to navigate. You don't have to be a resident to register.

    So I just bought a 2020 hawk 250 and you know I did everything right. So tonight I was riding home and then I shut off the bike right well after a few minutes or so I was like okay gonna go around the block and the electric start wouldn’t work I said that’s not good so I’m looking at everything and I see the positive smoking I was like what the heck. So I look at it real good and the Acid battery that it comes with was melted to the crew to the battery and I can turn the key to the on and everything will light up but the electric start won’t start the bike up but if I kick start it, it will start up no problem but the electric box the Will click but won’t turn the bike over. I’d like to get some help please I just got the bike and don’t want to have to sell it. And is the oil I put in it have to be 15w-40 or can I put 10w-40 motorcycle oil in and it has the saf on it but not the SF please can you help me @motocheez.

      Sounds like bad connection where it's smoking... 10w40 or 20w50 SF is good..

    if you don't do much off-roading then just remove the airbox lid and it'll get much more air

      BRAWLEYABYSS it gets loud wide open throttle too, I tested it to see the difference after cutting the box. no difference in power, just louder.
