    As an asian American, it is true. We barely even get represented in Hollywood and when “Crazy Rich Asians” came out people finally started talking about it.

      @@EnigmazGuide westerners are obsessed about representation since they know it affects public mind, the way the mass thinks of you. They always want others to see them as the most attractive and that's why they care about it.

      @@EnigmazGuide americans even made rules in the past that prohibited white women to marry an asian men or else they lose their citizen ship. It's that crazy. (ofc they removed it but only after making tons of movies that represented asian men as an enemy of women or a really bad guy and the asian women drooling over the white men.) I remember watching some of those movies when I was a kid and it made me feel bad about being asian.
      Edit: I remember my first reaction when I was kid seeing one of the asian actor looking really hot but then I see the way he behaved and I was disgusted and formed an image in my mind that the asian guy wasn't attractive but instead ugly. Then there's the white guy that saves the asian girl and I pictured in my mind damn that white guy is a real men.
      Ironically, white men did the completely opposite things in asia. They were miss treating asian women really bad and forcing themselves onto the women was a really common thing you won't believe me. The media covered those horrible things. If you're interested to know some example of those case then japan and vietnam are good examples. There's the My Lai massacre but they don't tell you what happened to girls before they murder the vietnamese civilians.

    It's not only Asian males. Hollywood is still back in the 1930s with it comes to race. To many Casting directors, BLACKS are the ONLY minority in the US. Take the ABC network show "The Good Doctor" It's based in San Jose California, (silicon Valley) in a region where Asians are a huge part of the population. Who are the doctors in this fictional Hospital in San Jose? 99% black characters and some Hispanic. WHAT? Has any of them BEEN to ANY hospital in California? it's 99% Asians and East Indian doctors. But, sure you'll get the idiot who points to the ONE asian guest star to 'prove you wrong'. LOL. It's not just Hollywood. Most of the viewing public is anti asian racist, and they refuse to see it or make lame arguments that it doesn't exist. :D

      @@swtlikecndy4119 It's problematic to look at any media meant for entertainment and believe these portrayals are meant to be seen as a "representation" of any race or real life. (Though at least Ken was a real Doctor at one point)
      Sure audiences have a habit of stereotyping, but I'm not going to look at the Good Doctor and expect doctors to be autistic or autistics to be miracle doctors or want to perceive it as a fitting representation of the American populous.
      How many doctor shows are out there anyway? Thumbs up for "Dr. Pimple Popper" the real doctor with a fictionalized branded name. Also shoutout to Dr. Judy Ho on "the Doctors". How about news corespondents Dr. Leana Wen, Dr. Sanjay Gupta (omg they're all married to white people! lol). It's only lacking because you want validate from a sitcom or TV fiction. oh boy. In the realm of entertainment, things are different. Even the talent pool is smaller.
      I would also question what it means wanting to be a part of the American mainstream. Like White mainstream? Does it just become about seeking White people's acceptance and approval?

    Hey great video essay, kinda wish you had included some footage of Steven Yeun and his starring role in Mayhem that came out in 2017. It was a rare Asian American lead role last year. Especially since the role wasn't written for an Asian American nor the film directed by or written by one. He just filled the role as an actor, and they casted him because of his skill and star power. Although he was born in South Korea he moved to the US in 1989 when he was 6 and was raised in Michigan.

      This comment is riddled with internalized stereotypes, somewhat naive, but, I assume, it comes from a good place. It assumes Asian males have problems with the opposite sex, communication, and fashion (not all do, some more than other, some for diff reasons etc etc). The working-out part, implies 1) that all women want, need or have some criteria that's focused on a specific type of physique (some do, some don't etc etc) and 2) that an Asian male needs to overcompensate for a non-Asian' (or even another Asian) inability to see an Asian males differently from a monolithic stereotype (an even w/ stereotypes, there are more than one). Look, while I appreciate the intention, that in-of-itself is generalizing what all non-Asians want (which doesn't really do anything positive in the long-run). It's generalizing all Asians as a stereotype. It's working to counter whatever assumptions you have about non-Asians by then changing yourself to, in-turn, change the minds of non-Asians. I don't think that's really the point of equality; the whole point is to be seen as a human w/ individual characteristics. Because at the end of the day, you want the entire race to be seen as a collective of many unique individuals (humans)...you don't want to change the existing stereotype, only to replace it w/ a different stereotype.

      To add to your point: Films are expressions of creativity before they are expressions of intelligence.
      When cultures allow their people to express themselves creatively, their people produce creative products. Europe was the centre of artistic expression during many eras (with wider variety and depth than much of east Asia) due to culture. Japan and Korea are doing a much better job of rewarding creativity, but it's still very bureaucratic.

I'm a 5'7" white American man and around most young adult Asian men, even the southeast Asian men, I feel short compared to them. These young adult Korean American men and many Chinese American men depending on which area of China that they are from look like half of their male population is 5'11" (180 cm) or taller. The young adult southeast Asian American men such as the Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodians, Filipinos, etc look like half of their male population is 5'8" (172 cm) or taller. Many of your European Americans have half or more than half of their male populations being 5'9" or shorter such as the Italians and the Irish and many others. As a 5'7" white American man I more often than not feel average more then short around Italian Americans, Irish Americans, Greek Americans, French Americans and other European Americans.

    I'm a korean Canadian man who was adopted into a Canadian family. I really don't see what it is these days with people's obsession with being portrayed as sexy and cool on screen... or having to be sexy and cool to the population in general? The majority of the population doesn't find asian men as attractive as other races... but some do. I've experienced lots rejection because of... I suspect... being an asian male. But then again I've also had white girlfriends from the past have preferred that I was korean... but that's probably not because of looks... but because of personality and who you are inside. But I don't sit around crying that women don't find me attractive. There's way too much going on in the world right now to sit around thinking about yourself to be honest. We need to stop being so selfish. It's like these overweight women who get upset because being skinny is the standard of beauty these days. Yes and that's probably never gonna change... so what? Being unattractive isn't the end of the world. I cared about being different when I was in high school... but I stopped giving a fuck a long time ago because basing everything on looks and how your represented in movies is not the real world. I watch the asian characters in the hangover and harold and kumar and thought they were funny... because it's just a fucking movie. Yes it's not an accurate depiction... but I don't complain that ewoks aren't real when I watch star wars. But this whole thing about everybody bitching and moaning about not being sexy to a majority of the population... whether its asian, indian, fat people, bald people, redheads... etc. etc. You only need one person to love you for who you are... and not give a shit about the rest.

    The notion of "representation" to me, is often problematic. Everyone is an individual. Even the most successful and positive role, personae, portrayal will always represent that person and only that person. When we point to movies, they mostly make more roles for myths and fantasies, than actual people. Heroes are great to root for and admire, even creating "positive stereotypes", and I love'em all, but most are less "representative" and more artificial than not. (unless someone makes a "toned down" realer to life movie, which isn't common) Don't get me wrong, I love my heroes, myths, and fantasies. However, greater "Exposure" is the best word to describe what I'd like to see more of, and offers the better value and shot for advancing Asian American Media in Entertainment and the Desire for Representation.
    Here's the media content I'd like to see Asian Americans focus on, on a semi-pro level: REALITY TV, FOOD, TRAVEL, DOCUMENTARY, VLOGS, VARIETY. Showcase your Asian Ethnic-Town, interview a business, show us the lives of the people, and different types of Asian American communities. Reason being it generally features real life people in real world scenarios. I'd also assume
    it's cheaper and easier to make. I'd also push TH-cam as a reasonable platform for exposure because there is almost no barriers for "broadcast." In fact, I'd want Asian Americans to push ANY CONTENT onto TH-cam, no matter how amateur, for exposure's sake. Product reviews, news, whatever you're passionate about, whatever. I'm not unaware of the difficulty of attracting views, and the artificial creation of an inflated personality in order to gain views, but if we want people to see us as we are, it's the way to go. Production skills involved such as writing, presenting, editing, and camerawork matter but it's a lot easier than moviemaking. I love movies but it's a daunting platform to breakthrough. If you have the resources and backing, that's great, make more myths, heroes, and fantasies, but for the rest of us, contributing content is not an impossible.
    I wish somebody would make something like the "Terrance House" series on Netflix. Get a bunch of attractive young guys and attractive young girls, both with calm, polite demeanors, less prone to stupid drama, commentated by a bunch of average looking people who rely more on their personalities than their looks, and let life play out. To me, that's a closer unadulterated form of exposure.

    • @allennguyen4220
      @allennguyen4220 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Look, I used to think representation was somewhat silly as well, but I realized how important it is. While nonfictional works of film would provide us with real Asian people and real Asian scenarios, they mostly cater toward Asian people already. In other words, not that many non-Asian would watch these things. There are tons of content created by Asians for Asians on TH-cam, but that's not enough to change the general American perception. Hollywood needs to start including Asian characters who defy stereotypes, even if that means the Asian character is a muscular, athletic jock who bullies people. At least it defies the established stereotype of the Asian male as a nerdy, feminine, weak wimp.
      As popular as Terrace House is, the American public generally won't watch that stuff, so it's not going to change a thing.

    • @AsianFilmFanatic
      @AsianFilmFanatic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It shouldn't be about catering to other's perceptions, impressing white people, or black people, or creating new myths. It's about being true to one's self. "To express oneself honestly, not lying to oneself" (to pull a Bruce quote) is notably the higher value. I mean I indulge in a good myth creation as much as any for entertainment, inspiration, and emphatically lift up, but it just isn't real. Perhaps they're mostly hyper-real, but what's most important is that we tell our own stories with our own words. Kung Fu stereotypes already blasted away the wimp stereotype itself for decades, and it's still there. So I don't think stereotype elimination through polar roles work well. Overly unique "stars" who make it big because they aren't normal, can actually backfire because like Bruce Lee, they become the new stereotype. "Representation" is just really bad terminology. PRESENCE and EXPOSURE is what people should be advocating.
      I'm absolutely 100% all in for better films that star Asian Americans (except for the ones that suck). But I still believe a strong diverse permeation of REALITY TV, FOOD, TRAVEL, DOCUMENTARY, VLOGS, VARIETY, JOURNALISM, CRITIQUE as the best practical strategy for impacting perception, and it doesn't even have to be about Asian Americans. Just intentional authorship makes a difference. Films are higher risk, more costly, and require massive amounts of coordinated talent. Opportunities like that are rare and privileged. TH-cam, almost anyone can contribute.
      Terrance House remains niche in America and has Japan fetish fans, but on Netflix, it's accessible at least. Japanese originated content, I'd say, has a successful, visible spot in American consciousness. I'd point to things like video games, anime, Godzilla, Dragonball, Power Rangers even, many Americans know about these franchises. K-POP has it's American fans, and singers get "discovered" off of youtube. Asia is way ahead of the game and has the engine to keep it going.
      The thing most Asian American activists should realize is that most people, especially the general American populous, cares less about "breaking stereotypes". The general American populous wants good entertainment, good stories, good action, compelling characters, first. I'd put less faith in cocky, stupid, cheesy, corny, forced comedy, forced hip, overly self conscious B-rate fare that I see all too often.

      Fobs can be Americans, "Macdougal." While I lament the situation in Hollywood, what I'm saying is, it's not going to change or solved anytime soon. Racism is legit, but also the numbers are formidable. Small community, fewer actors. Arts isn't high in Asian American values, and for a reason, it's difficult, for any artist to thrive. I don't know what would change that. If you're frustrated, there's an immediate alternative that's long and rich. If you're motivated, there's always youtube ;)
      The Asian Cinema landscape is superior to the Asian American Cinema landscape 1000 fold. I wholeheartedly believe in that. If you want portrayals of Asians, of all walks of life, not just idealized heroes, it's there. I'll bet you there's more non-Asian fans of Anime, Martial Art flicks, K-Dramas, K-pop, J-pop, Gangnam style, than there are fans of all of Asian American media combined. I'd argue it's made a stronger impact in America too. Crossover stars like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Chow Yun Fat, Donnie Yen, Ken Watanabe, Yashuko Koji, Jay Chou get bigger spotlights. And while most of them are of the martial arts stereotype, all the better, I say. Asian Men in Asian cinema is full of masculinity and romance and beyond.

    • @AsianFilmFanatic
      @AsianFilmFanatic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And to that Trolo-loser, even if, say Black men have the highest level of testosterone, and reputation for a high sexual appetite, why do white girls find you so undesirable? If you ask the general populous of the United States, which is the most attractive race, Blacks probably would be on the bottom alongside Asian Men. That's not to say Black isn't beautiful. Even Latinos, who have a stereotype of "Latin Lovers" when it comes down to it, male minorities aren't the highest desired. I think that generally, most races date the same race and also the numbers drive desire. The reason why "the Bachelor" is always a pretty boy white dude is the same as the reason why it's always so wild and trashy. Majority rule ratings. Now can someone explain "Yellow Fever" to me, cause I'm interested in other perspectives.
      There is also probably a problem of Western depictions and traditions of love that differ from Eastern love. A myriad of things are to blame. Another problem I often see with complaints about Asian American Masculinity complaints, is they mostly come from Asian American men, and it's the men who try to solve it. And they go about doing that by enforcing a male's perspective of attracting females, usually emphasizing the "male strip model" or "player" approach and it’s just cringe worthy. Unfortunately, on a whole, I'm not a naturally easy fan of female-centric "chick-flick" romances and would vomit at any conventional pretty boy-cute girl love story. Well, actually, it's the pretty boy toys that make me vomit. But an Asian Cinema fan's gotta do what an Asian Cinema fan's gotta do.
