Me as in Indian living in india can say that what can we say to Hollywood when Bollywood and hindi tv serials portray every type of stereotypes present there.
On one hand, you're right but on the other, 2 wrongs don't make a right. Both Hollywood and Bollywood have a problem with representation and stereotyping. Instead of saying things like 'we do it too,' we should be saying things like 'we should try to change BOTH the Hollywood and Bollywood and call them out since they both are wrong.'

both Hassan Minaj and Lilly Singh have done squat about representing the broad diversity of Indian culture.. They just pushed political ideology.. Only Mindy kaling actually brought real representation.. And she took big risks with never have I ever.. It's kinda weird but, shouldn't race have something to do? I used to think that traits like these shouldn't have anything to do with them but these traits are what make a character. If you have two characters of opposite race, then that alone differentiates them by a lot, their circumstances, standard of living, etc. I think that what you mean to say is that race shouldn't be entirely what their character identity is, but it will always play a role in who they are.

American film industry is dominant with south Indian diaspora and bollywood with north west population, these industries are just setting their own dominant narrative. Unfortunately India has many traditional dresses and population is not homogenous and these south Indians just promote their own narrative abroad but again even in India we have totally marginalized our vibrant North east people.
People in west are known to create stereotypes and Indian diaspora is known to accept it to look more whiter than white to be accepted in their society. This term South-Asian is very problematic as it diminish the importance of culturally and ethincally vibrant place like India and put them together with pakistan/afghanistan&bangladesh. Just saying South-Asian create a stereotype that all Indians are dark skin and India is just present in south and doesn't extends into what West call "East" and it effectively alienate North-East who happens to have mongoloid facial features.

2. I would rather prefer (& support) people like Liza Koshy over Lily and Hasan for not basing off of the 'stereotypes' for their fame over media. No hate.
3. Not really related to the very topic but if discussing India itself, acknowledgement & representation of diversities is an extremely rare occurrence on its own. Late to this by a year but thanks for making this video. As an south asian I am so embarrased by these exaggerrated OTT stereotypes.
Video: Stereotypes about Indians
*Contains Stereotypical Indian tabla music*
I'm here for the bibliography.
0:57 do they think we got no schools in India?
Now, this is something worth watching!
I love that scene form Harold and Kumar. Should've included the wntrie scene.
And the accent they use god knows from were they have heard it 😂
Aren't you also stereotyping us by playing that classical music track
Good point
Thank you for your comment about the music, feel free to check out the original creators: th-cam.com/video/T-pUR5T1RLo/w-d-xo.html ! IndianRaga creates amazing Carnatic fusion music! :)
Okay, but why is he (1:01) wearing a very formal attire which is worn on weddings and stuff😂
Come on, we run the Silicon Valley, we run MNC's indirectly, we run NASA indirectly, we rock in MIT
still your country is not developed 💀💀. Its not like USA needs Indians its like indians need USA
Yeah you are just employees or slaves whos the real founder ? Its up to him he can remove you out of the company whenever he wants!!
@@socrates5779 Boi our country was already developed more than 5k years ago, just research. Everything was destroyed and looted by vultures, 10 million bookd were burnt, the worlds largest and oldest universities Nalanda, Takshila etc were burnt and destroyed.

Watching this makes me think how the video maker confused Jokes and stereotypes .. I mean a lil
Just note one thing Indian diaspora celebrating any festival in these films don't really have ethnic and cultural diversity India is known for and forget about they would show a north-east Indian women wearing shari or her local traditional dress and celebrating any festival with them , I am sure US definitely has NorthEast Indian population. Again we can't blame them as we have ourself isolated NE for long and that is the reason why Kpop is popular there because they see themselves similar to kpop actors.
Abee who are you to tell everyone. ..first of all chutiye..northeast wale hamesha se hi khud ko alag rkhe h sb se...avi bhi nagaland aur arunachal pradesh me jane ke lye extra permit lgta h...wha ghar ngi khareed skte wha job nhi kr skte ....hdd agyani ho tm....
@@kanishkkumar5431 that's probably because of the border disputes with China like how things are in Kashmir because of Pakistan. We can't blame them for anything when we were the ones who first alienated them and keep stripping them of their identity.
Yeah South Asians face tough, rough, hard, blunt, harsh, or and blank treatments almost everywhere
Further down South in India you'll find beings called 'South Indians'. A stereotype about them, that is actually true, is that they are obsessed with belly buttons😂😂😂
LOL😂😂😂😂😂
Is that true, to some extent?

This was a good compilation
They still don't know a damn about South India
Maybe this sounds bad or I sound like a dumb white girl, but even though Ravi Ross had a pretty stereotypical personality, he had a major impact on me and I absolutely loved his character when I first watched Jessie back when I was 10 (to be fair though, I had no concept of stereotypes at the time). I could also heavily relate to core his personality at the time such as his love of animals, social awkwardness, general intelligence on certain subjects, and gentle nature. In fact, the reason I became so interested in learning about India was because of him. Though I will say, I'm very glad I was never brainwashed by Western media when it comes to racial and ethnic stereotypes.
Also, Bend it Like Beckham is one of the greatest films of all time and I'm glad you included it in this video.
Well, before accusing the West fir Stereotyping Indians, let's have a look on ourselves, especially the North Side, as Because it's more mainstream (yup, i said that, don't ask for reasons, cause i have one) and our Beloved, Bollywood, whom for the Last 2 Decade, successfully Kept Alive the Ritual of Stereotyping almost every Group of peeps Around the country, and completely ignoring the North Eastern part, cause at the time they were not even sure, whether we are Indians or not, for them we were either Chinese or Bangladeshis (And im just saying just for North Eastern peeps, others, im not so sure)...........so if you wanna get woke like life less Ghoul, atleast do it by not being a Hypocrite, and also work on the feelings. 🙂
Hi! Maybe I should have been more explicit on my perspective during the editing process. I unfortunately don't have a rich understanding of Bollywood films and the culture surrounding that industry as this video was made from a "western" perspective. I can only analyze these stereotypes from a South Asian American lense because I have grown up as a South Asian American with a lack of authentic representation during childhood. I am grateful for the progress that is being made currently and can't wait to see better strides in the future not just in Hollywood but also Bollywood. Thank you for sharing your perspective :)
@@shreyajags3008 It is not about North/South but giving a real perspective of what makes India all round vibrant, so many thought process and cultures, dresses coexist with each other for centuries and such diversity should be shown to the world otherwise it gives an Impression of segregation, there is a rise in hate crimes against "Asian Americans" in america and atleast there should be some effort to include NE in our story tellings and this term "South Asian" is shallow and problematic because it includes nations like pakistan/bangladesh with us but tends to seperate NE as "Asians" . We should show what make India unique , what an ignorant westerner can mistook for Arab/Persian/african/"Asian" could verywell be an Indian, films should be melting pot of all these otherwise lots of people would feel isolated, point is all about inclusion and simultaneously breaking stereotypes what west has created and what we have created ourself.
This deserves more views
Danny Boyle has done justice in representing South Asian communities, even with Slumdog Millionaire. You saw "Poverty Porn" in it I saw an energetic and positive take on developing India.
It was a third class movie with bad acting and stereotypes about India. It was made to malign Indias image in the world. British have been playing this game for a long time. But karma is a bitch.
Another WONDERFUL example of good Indian representation is owen from haunting of bly manor! He is a sweetheart, and has a charming well rounded personality instead of just being a caricature full of Indian stereotypes. The character feels real, human and memorable and not just 'that indian dude'
When everything says south Asian but forgets all the other 7 countries and only includes India -_-
There is also Pakistani scene
i know right ngl thats a bit ( a lot) disappointing
Loved ur video
It's funny how they picture Indians .It's like they are living in a different era!!!!
South Asian means only Indians? Then what about other countries of south Asia? Are they disappeared or vanished? What about Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, etc.? There are lot of talented actors in other South Asian countries but one cares and having expectation from Hollywood is like coming out of alive from blackhole. At least, Indians are being showed in movies and television shows but others they don't even get chance. but stereotyping is the worst and major problem which has been repeated day by day by these hollywood movies and television shows.
tho i knew how things would go when ill go to uni next yr but just seeing all this at glimpse is scaring me
How many days they portray india as slums , filthy and weird
Just wait to see the glory of" Golden Bird "
The idea that NRI's have about India and Indians are themselves skewed on many levels. Bollywood is insanely problematic, but I'm really not sure whether they have seen any Indian films beyond Karan Johar and Yash Raj Studios!
And how they think that South Asia is only India
Might want to tell that to all the Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepali people selling Indian food to make money off Indians.. Let's see them sustain a business selling only their regions food.. 😂
@@Sticklemako what has this got anything to do with my comment?
@@cyanscrewdriver2092 Cause South Asian IS india.. The rest is just nation state definitions put for administration.. My point is that the punjabi food you eat is still Indian whether its made by a person whose grandparents came from the punjab in the Indian state or the pakistani state.. The culture is still the same, the genetic history is the same
@@Sticklemako again has nothing to do with my comment. Why don’t you just accept that there a different countries in South Asia instead of being so narrow minded thinking that whatever comes from India should stay in India. That’s like me saying “you’re not allowed to speak English because the language is from England only, I bet you wouldn’t get anywhere without English lol”
@@cyanscrewdriver2092 So there are different countries in South Asia.. SO? That has NO bearing to ethnic representation in America, ie. different country != different ethnicity.. You clearly are too dumb to understand that..
BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM WAS A MESS OMG i watched this as a kid an i live in the uk and it might just be in my area but i haven't seen an irish person face any/little discrimination apart from people not knowing the difference in between irish and scottish accents.
