I have been a photographer for over 30 years and always just used bridge in Photoshop and folders etc. However this video has given me the knowledge to get more organised. I have seen loads of Lightroom videos on you tube but this one nails it from a photographers prospective, I will watch this on my iPad whilst following it to guide me through the process on my iMac - great stuff Nigel and thanks.
Absolutely brilliant. I have thousands of photos from numerous journeys and I’ve been stalling on how to sort and cull. Love the idea of printing a contact sheet.
Nigel, I know this video is old but I am just now seeing it. New to Lightroom and have been trying to learn and this is by far the best video I have seen! Thank you for doing it and for explaining things to clearly! I imagine I will watch it over and over as I try to organize my Lightroom photos.
cant tell you how many articles/videos I've poured over on this topic and this one makes complete sense . New to channel and subscribed.....excellent and many thanks
Just found this, thank you soooo much! Exactly what I was looking for. Export presets based on different use case scenarios in a Year structured folder. Genius!!!
I've been trying to find my own workflow system for a couple of years, and I keep tweaking it, so by now it is not very uniform. So your video is perfect for me right now (January 2019) to start out the new year with a simple, quarterly filing system. I also learned a lot about your rating process which I think will help me become much more efficient during my first sort through the images after a shoot. I am now capturing more multiple images (several frames per second) and I have many more images to delete. Also, you've inspired me to create a few of my own presets for developing and exporting. I have been doing the same things over and over, so I look forward to becoming even more efficient. Your presentation style is calm, professional, and concise. THANK YOU Nigel!
Brilliant. Thank you! I have to admit, I've always been so focused on Develop, even after some 14,000 photos edited, that I haven't ever clicked out of Develop over to "Map". I've always just geo-tagged in Flickr when I upload, or assumed it was going to be super complicated through a sync device. I have to admit, super embarassed. Mind blown. Thank you. THIS is why these types of tutorial videos are brilliant.
my god there is soooo much I still don't know about lightroom.. an incredible video thank you so much! Now I have hours and hours of reorganising to do!!
Thanks Nigel, really useful video. Only 6 months or so into my Lightroom journey and going to stick with it, so this will no doubt be invaluable in years to come!
Thank you Nigel very helpful information. I just ordered all my photos by the date they were taken. Your video is going to make me reorganize my entire catalogue.
One thing i didn't get was if your exported files were in the same folders (e.g 2017>Q1>"subfolder name">"Full res JPG"), or in another year ("2017" for example) folder?. Also, do you use only one catalog? I recently discovered your channel and I've got to say that you're amazing. You really stand out because you have a natural gift for transmitting knowledge.
Thank you very much for another great video. It might be easy for me to find lightroom features however problem is sometimes it takes years to see if your file organizatin plan is practical or not. Thanks to you I now know a very useful and practical plan.
Interesting to see other peoples work-flow and organizing. Personally, I organize my catalog by location, cannot remember last month never mind three years ago! Picked up some good tips Neil. Cracking video as usual.
Brilliant Nigel, thank you for taking the time to make the video. This is an area that I never really understood for many years and I ended up in a mess with files and folders.....until now. Thank you.
A few good tips in the video Nigel. There is so much in LR still to learn, thanks for sharing. Looking forward to your next post, next location and of course the pictures.
Very helpful process Nigel. I usually organise as different catalogue. But recently it was becoming a little long process to edit a picture of different date/trip quickly. so really appreciated.
Hello Nigel, how on earth did I miss this one which I stumbled upon. Probably, the best one I have seen on organising your raw images. With some marvellous tips as well. So thank you very much as this vlog really got to the Heart of Lightroom...
So many top photographers use Lightroom but I am nervous about it because I had a catalog file corrupt so I lost all my edits and ratings. Still pondering whether or not to give up on Exposure 6 and return to LR. Fantastic video Nigel!
Hey Nigel. I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't seen any of your videos lately, but I have to say that these have gotten really good since your first few videos. Keep it up, you're going to do really well at this! I'll be watching as you release these from now on. Cheers!
Love the clear descriptions of each step, Nigel! And one last thing: IMHO, your "3 star" images look like 5-stars to me, dude. Rock on, keep up the fantastic work!
Dear Nigel, i use Lightroom for years now and stil struggling with the method of organizing. I just bought two new external HD's to back up in a better way. this morning i discovered that by moving the images from the old external HD's to my Imac and then into the new External HD's, two day's ago, i lost all my images from my Icelandtrip back in October. PANIC this morning! Then i remembered i probably still saved them on my Mackbook (wich was with me in Iceland) so i was lucky enough to recover them. Now your video i am going to take as an example to reorganise my workflow, it came just in time, thanks for that👏 Regards, Ben
Thanks for the fantastic video. I really like your tips and explanations for organizing and printing. I think I will be incorporating both into my work flow. Thanks again for all the inspiration you provide on your channel.
Hi Nigel. Loads of fantastic info here !! I'm a relative newbie to Light Room so this is really helpful as I'm still trying to find the best way to organise images. The tip on using "O" for different cropping overlays is also a great idea. Fab video as ever Nigel. Thank you for sharing.
I'm watching your video for a couple of years now but somehowe I have never seen this video before. I with I would have seen it earlier. I always struggle with my lightroom catalogus. I can never find a good way of storing everything. This is just an amazing example of what is possible. I have to do this for the past 10 years. Only proble is that I lost my lightroom catalogus due to computer changes and I have to re edit every old picture before 2021. Maybe something for the dark winter days...
This was quite helpful. I like the quarterly and then shoot name organization. I have been doing monthly and even weekly and shoot name. It is extra work and really hasn't helped me that much. I also like reformatting the SD card only after everything is backed up. That makes more sense to me. I have been reluctant to clear the card and end up with full cards that I have never gone back to. I'd like to see more of these post shoot types of videos.
Great video. Exactly what I needed at this point. Having some struggles managing images between the SD card, processing and storage. Really appreciate the vlog.
Always interesting to see how others work with Lightroom Nigel. I import mine using Year/month as I can then just use a preset every time (I’m lazy!) I dl from a card. Thanks for sharing.
Terrific video... It's always interesting to hear how other photographers execute their work-flow... Love your vids and your photography, keep up the great work!
Hi Nigel, great video. I stopped 2/3rds of the way to save it and send a like and make this comment. I realize this video is over 18 months old now and I wonder if you've done any updates? I'm in my late 60s and have been shooting personally for 20 years and shot portraits professionally for studios and for myself for 5 to 6 years. Now my main shooting is landscape, wildlife and family photography. Sorry, I'll get to the point. I have for years waffled back and forth organizing my images and video between date and subject. In many cases I did both. Yours is the first video I've seen that helped come to final decision on how I wish to catalog my images and video so thank you very much for putting this out there. Keywording and naming has always been an issue as well. Do you have any tips especially file naming or do you just leave your camera filename and rely on keywording? Before Lightroom I used other programs which were primarily just browsers to be able to add exif and iptc data but they had limitations because of lack of sorting and searching. For example, the one I used mostly was BreezeBrowser Pro (BBPro) and DownloaderPro. BBPro was good because it had exif, iptc capability as well as some minor image manipulation, which is all I needed because I don't like image manipulation beyond basic processing. Anyway, if you kept reading this far I appreciate and found your video helpful.
Great video Nigel - very helpful for us newbies to Lightroom, particularly the organisational aspects. A bit quick but it gives me a lot to work on, and I can pause and go over things again, or research individual bits from what you've said. Enjoy your videos mate so keep em coming. Cheers Steve, Perth, Western Australia
Fantastic video. I really like how you organize by quarter, and I've already set up my 2018 folder that way! I've never used the "stars" method sorting, just "pick", but I can see how it can be useful. Thanks so much for this, really helpful.
Really very useful, thanks Nigel. Its a video I'll use for reference often, I'm sure. I'm fairly well organised and have a similar set up, but yours goes that bit further. Thanks.
It is really nice to see someone show how they organise they're work through the computer, how ever it would be nice to see how you organise your place's through google earth like how you add your locations with a photo and discription of ideas, just an idea of a new video if you are upto the challenge.
Great video Nigel, I use a system similar to the one you describe but found a few tweeks. Thanks for the cropping tip and contact sheet. Excellent thanks again !!!
I'm about to improve my filestructure/workflow and i was struggling to find the one that suits me best. Thanks to your video i just found the missing piece of the puzzle :) Thank you, Nigel and all the best.
I think I'm going to make a late new years resolution to sort out my Lightroom workflow. Being a bit of a gear head, I started my folder system by camera then year then month then date. Thanks for all the tips, your passion is, as always, very inspiring.
Hi Nigel, this is the best workflow guide I have come across. One question, I like the way you organise firstly into quarters, then a folder that has the shoot name( no messing with dates!) but when it comes to multi shots ie Glencoe & Skye how do you arrange the locations within the folder structure - do you use dates then to separate the locations? Thank you Nigel I really enjoy your channel - you are a very good educator.👍
fantastic video Nigel i wish i had found this a couple of years ago my lightroom is a shambles lol i might look at tidying it up and following you're great workflow method ...great informative video
Nice one Nigel..always educational to see others workflow no matter how long we've been doing it...some great tips in there.....and contact sheets !! bloody hell...and to think they were an essential part of my/everyone's black and white DIY film processing/printing workflow ! I might get a "I like contact sheets" t-shirt made up !!
We organise in a similar way, I like the Quarterly thing, think I might pinch this for my workflow, a very helpful vlog, thanks a lot. I have a habit of keeping my Raw, Jpgs and Tiffs on different drives, bit of an OCD thing I think, less anyone does it.
First time viewer of yours - thank you so much for such a clear, engaging and concise summary of your workflow. Best I've found. Thank you! Now following :)
Some great tips there, I really like the cataloguing method using year, quarter etc. I have always created a new folder for each day’s shoot but left the naming as is, so looking through for a particular shoot can be a nightmare! I think I will have to spend some time going through and reorganising the whole lot!
Great video on workflow. Have you changed your workflow over the years. With lightroom and lightroom classic now options do you still stick with classic or do you move back and forth between them now.
your tutorial like and love your video. for photography lessons will learn me and keep up it. one day or time must be a photographer to be.👍 Thank you a lot of! Nigel....,
Great tutorial - Searching for ways to consolodate and protect my archive. Wonder how much you worry about edits made in LR should be preserved. For a time I was exporting the dngs procesed so I could access from bridge with ajustments (2019 moved from bridge to LR for process and had a catalog corupt in midst of big edit/process - Burnt). With space running short over multiple backups and going back through to clear out, need to change the way I do things. Do you have more videos on this you could point me to - Thanks really enjoyed and love your images!
This video has just enlightened me to whole array of things I am now going to do in my Lightroom, everyday is definitely a school day!!
Thanks Nigel
I like the contact print idea
I have been a photographer for over 30 years and always just used bridge in Photoshop and folders etc. However this video has given me the knowledge to get more organised. I have seen loads of Lightroom videos on you tube but this one nails it from a photographers prospective, I will watch this on my iPad whilst following it to guide me through the process on my iMac - great stuff Nigel and thanks.
Thanks for the kind words Ian
Haha! I’ve just done the same thing! 😊
Thank you so much! I am struggling to find the right workflow. This helps a lot! Thanks!
Absolutely brilliant. I have thousands of photos from numerous journeys and I’ve been stalling on how to sort and cull. Love the idea of printing a contact sheet.
Great video on how you handel the pictures! It gave me a lot of inspiration and ideas on how to make my handling better and easyer. Many Thanks!!!!
Thank you for the idea of creating the Contact Sheets! It really sounds brilliant. I am going to try it out.
Nigel, I know this video is old but I am just now seeing it. New to Lightroom and have been trying to learn and this is by far the best video I have seen! Thank you for doing it and for explaining things to clearly! I imagine I will watch it over and over as I try to organize my Lightroom photos.

This The Best Video On Importing and Initial Workflow video - thank you!
Thanks Nigel, really useful video. Only 6 months or so into my Lightroom journey and going to stick with it, so this will no doubt be invaluable in years to come!
Very useful, thank you for the insights into your process Nigel

Amazingly useful insights on a LR subject seldom examined!

Excellent tutorial. Love the buzzy energy.
It is great to see how you process. I think I am going to start 2018 off in a better way. Reduce quality and store better. Thanks for your side

Again, informative and, so, I began taking notes. My Lightroom work is moderately organised but you provide some extra tips I need. Thanks!
Well done Nigel very well explained and the contact sheet is a great way to compare and contrast
Thanks russ
Makes it all crystal clear! Thank you Nigel, very helpful stuff!
So many top photographers use Lightroom but I am nervous about it because I had a catalog file corrupt so I lost all my edits and ratings. Still pondering whether or not to give up on Exposure 6 and return to LR.

Thanks a lot
I have a similar workflow. The geo tagging on LR I did not know and I like the idea of separate folders for exports. Thanks always learning 😃
Great video I learned a lot just started photography last year I will copy your way from this year thanks

Eek! That is scary - glad you found them
Great tutorial! Don't know how I missed this one earlier....
Great video Nigel. Must get more organised myself. This has shown me the way to go about it.
Thanks Jim
This is Exactly what I’ve been looking for thanks for the video
Great video Nigel! Really helpful to get a efficient workflow to organize my photos. Big up from Sweden!
Very helpful! Thank you so much! I would be interested to find out what "export presets" you have in more details.
Excellent video as you shared Avery helpful and simple way to organize one’s photos in LR. I’m going to start ding it your way. Thanks, Nigel! Cheers!
Thanks - appreciate kind words

Perfect! Thanks Nigel, really useful video. Will definitely be changing the way I do things. 👍🏻
Most have no idea how to organize their images! Great informative video! Keep up the hard work!
Thanks Bill!!!
It is Biff with an F! Thanks!
Oops - sorry Biff
I get called Bill all the time! Most are surprised by my nickname! All good with me!

Hi Nigel, I just discovered this video. Many thanks for this, some new ideas for me to follow!
An excellent video, thanks for sharing how you store your images, very helpful thank you and all the best for the New Year.
Really very useful, thanks Nigel. Its a video I'll use for reference often, I'm sure. I'm fairly well organised and have a similar set up, but yours goes that bit further. Thanks.
Cheers Glenn
Excellent video, must get organised as I spend far to much time looking for old images
You won’t regret it! Makes a big difference
Woow I feel stupid now 😅 I have been sorting my pictures on the SD card before importing. Thx this will help me ALOT!
It is really nice to see someone show how they organise they're work through the computer, how ever it would be nice to see how you organise your place's through google earth like how you add your locations with a photo and discription of ideas, just an idea of a new video if you are upto the challenge.
Brilliant, Nigel...thanks so much, you have an excellent way of explaining things :)
Great vlog, like the idea of splitting the years and quick edit presets, Thank you
Thanks a lot - appreciate the kind words
Great video Nigel, I use a system similar to the one you describe but found a few tweeks. Thanks for the cropping tip and contact sheet. Excellent thanks again !!!
Thanks James - glad I could help!!!
I'm about to improve my filestructure/workflow and i was struggling to find the one that suits me best. Thanks to your video i just found the missing piece of the puzzle :) Thank you, Nigel and all the best.
Thanks Nigel, very helpful.
Thanks for the video - useful to see your workflow!
I think I'm going to make a late new years resolution to sort out my Lightroom workflow. Being a bit of a gear head, I started my folder system by camera then year then month then date. I've been thinking, about taking the camera bit out, Lightroom meta data covers that. Also my date structure is too deep, I like your Q1,2,3,4 method. I'd be tempted to go monthly, but that might highlight my lack of productivity lately a bit too much for comfort ;-) My key-wording is also hit and miss. At least I backup with plenty of redundancy. Thanks for all the tips, your passion is, as always, very inspiring.
I think I might have to steal that idea as a new year's resolution too...
I put multiple cameras in same folder as can easily filter afterwards... good New Years resolution! 👍👍👍
Hi Nigel, Thank you for this great video. Would you be willing to share all the adjustments you use for the different export criteria?
Great, great video Nigel.. I will copy a lot of your workflow 👍🏻
Thanks 🙏🏻
fantastic video Nigel i wish i had found this a couple of years ago my lightroom is a shambles lol i might look at tidying it up and following you're great workflow method ...great informative video
Thanks :) Exactly what the video promised and really helpful!
Wow, what a useful video. Thanks.
Nice one Nigel..always educational to see others workflow no matter how long we've been doing it...some great tips in there.....and contact sheets !! bloody hell...and to think they were an essential part of my/everyone's black and white DIY film processing/printing workflow ! Ha ha! Love it!
Nice, detailed overview there, Dan and I picked up a few tips. Cheers
Thanks for the kind words and watching!
Excellent! Thanks so much; keep up the wonderful work.
Will do - thanks 👍🙏🏻👊
Very helpful and very well explained, thank you!
Some great tips there, I really like the cataloguing method using year, quarter etc. I have always created a new folder for each day’s shoot but left the naming as is, so looking through for a particular shoot can be a nightmare! Thanks! Good luck!
Great video on workflow. Have you changed your workflow over the years. With lightroom and lightroom classic now options do you still stick with classic or do you move back and forth between them now.
Thanks for a good understanding of your workflow. I got some ideas I can use.
Keith
Just what I needed! Thanks so much for sharing this information!
Thanks a lot for that. All good to think and learn with.
Great video!! One question i have is: Do your exported images become part of your Lightroom Catalog?
Thank you.
this video is a god send!
Great Vid Nigel. I will now start using the map facility in lightroom, I've never bothered with it!!
It is sooooo useful!
Great video Nigel, and very good timing. I now know I need to re-organize my 'Library'. Don't hold your breath untill I'm done with that! :)
Ha ha - thanks
your tutorial like and love your video. for photography lessons will learn me and keep up it. one day or time must be a photographer to be.👍 Thank you a lot of! Nigel....,
