    I added some backstory to the description since this video has so many views.

    I’m thankful you explain the only explosions were the airbags and tires. I can’t even tell you how hard I want to roll my eyes when panicking people think the entire vehicle is “about to explode” like some kind of Michael Bay movie. 🙄 I also want to say those owners are incredibly lucky (and probably thanking their lucky stars) that they hadn’t had that van in the garage when it caught fire or that would have been awful. Houses burn as fast as match sticks now.

  • @hebneh
    @hebneh 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    I'm no firefighter, but at the very beginning of the video I think a garden hose could've made a difference in at least reducing the fire's spread...of course I'm only seeing the fire from one side, from a distance.

      Even early on the car was a total loss.

      Unless you catch it VERY early, you want to let burn..........if you have insurance.

    • @hebneh
      @hebneh 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paulwilliams6753 I wouldn't be concerned about trying to save the vehicle, but I would want to prevent the fire from spreading to anything nearby, particularly in a neighborhood of homes.

      People are too busy reaching for their cameras to record it rather than helping to put it out, that’s the world we live in now.

    What??!! Nobody owns a fire extinguisher or a garden hose? I hit a deer with my S-10 Blazer, 4 hours later it was on fire just like this (battery/electrical issues) and I used a fire extinguisher to knock the bulk flames down and then got the garden hose to finish the job. No fire dept, no help and all over in 5 mins. People, drop the camera phones and go help your neighbors and strangers when the need help

    For those of you who are thinking it was dumb to not try a garden hose at first, let me remind you that fire is HOT. You couldn't get close enough to make any difference without being right next to it and a garden hose doesn't have the pressure to allow you to be further away.

    • @11xr1east
      @11xr1east 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not all garden water hoses have weak pressure. Today companies are selling nosels for garden hose that fireman have on theie equipment

    • @MrDrewmcdonald
      @MrDrewmcdonald 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The nozzle make very little difference. The pressure in the water system and coming through a 3/4 in. hose just isn't enough. The FF in the video are using a 1.75 in hose. It's the gallons per minute that matter. A garden house is about 3-6 gallons per minute. That fire hose is about 125 gpm.

    • @bobbillings
      @bobbillings 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clarence Trotter -Pressure and volume are two separate entities. You can have identical pressure on a garden hose and a fire engine (hypothetically) and at the end of 60 seconds, you will have 100 plus gallons of water more on that fire compared to 5 gallons from a residential garden hose

    • @MrDrewmcdonald
      @MrDrewmcdonald 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now if you had 25 garden hoses all flowing at the same time and you held them all together so it all went into the car.....it would still be too hot to stand close enough with a garden hose.

    • @Rebel9668
      @Rebel9668 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No bigger than the fire was at the start of the video a garden hose could have easily put that out. I've put out larger ones than that with a garden hose myself, just stand upwind.

    We had a used Black 2006 Mercury Monterey Minivan that had plenty of bells and whistles but it was a gas guzzling lemon. We purchased it based on a positive experience owning a Windstar previously thinking the Monterey would be similar (this actually could be our old vehicle as it was traded in to a Transitowne dealership).

    We think of cars as being mostly made of metal, which doesn't burn, so it always surprises me how flammable cars really are, and how substantial and smoky car fires also are.

    Nice of the guy in the black pointing to the location of the fire. People this was a very hot fire, your low pressure garden hose will not work. Plus add the fact one would stand at least twenty feet to avoid the heat. Finally the size of the fire demands a professional to handle.

    When the fire is consumed, everything comes from the fire trucks. The officials must take extraordinary measures to avoid such accidents, which cost the property great losses. For example, a proposal could be for example in every neighborhood, for example firefighting units, so that the intervention to extinguish the fire quickly and so on the roads

    Was the second truck there for moral support? And, gasoline tanks don't explode (except in movies), they may rupture in a collision, and then gas can ignite creating a nasty fire. PNG or propane tanks may explode, but usually won't because of relief valves.

      Burlington Northern Modeler Most house hold fire extinguishers are of the dry chemical type. Good for VERY small kitchen fires, or a TV set on fire, but if you don't get deep inside the material on fire, (i.e.) in this case the seats, the powder will just sit on the set and NOT put the fire out.

    The Amherst firefighters did a great job putting that car fire out, I do know that some of the explosions are from the air bags,(The powder like chemical catches fire and sounds like a M-80 because I learned that from local firefighters, the other explosions I'm sure were from the tires, and quite possibly from any hydraulic fluid, at least the gas tank didn't explode because you would've seen the back end of the truck lift right off the ground and that sure is one heck of a bang noise too, I'm glad that everyone was safe,

    • @redredmane5544

      @ffjsb 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, a good water hose with decent pressure would do a good job of containing it. I wouldn't try to get too close because of the danger from exploding struts and the airbags, but it would protect the exposures.

    • @dandi907
      @dandi907 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually.... a water hose with good pressure would have most definitely put this fire out at the early stages. Not very smart to get close to it and try to put it out, but it would definitely do the job. However, it would have had to been tried as the very first thing because as you could see from the video, the condition of the fire deteriorated very rapidly.

      We normally only use a couple of guys to actually fight a car fire, plus the pump operator. The second truck was probably sent only because it was reported to be close to the house. A single engine with 3-4 guys is a typical response in most FD's.

      Andrew Kahananui Honest answer, here in WNY, it is not something that is done by all departments. Many still fight fires as if this was 1960. I'm not trying to justify it, just providing an answer. My department requires SCBAs, others here do not. They just never used them before, so why start now.

      I see. To each their own. Mahalo for the honest answer. I was curious because I see our dept here pack up on those fires to.

      FightinaFire I don't think that's accurate. Every department around here wears an SCBA

    wonder why 2 appliances to a car fire?----in uk only 1 would be despatched

    • @bobbillings
      @bobbillings 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because this is standard since they are from same station that usually have average 3-7 appliances anyway. Plus this is in middle of residential neighborhoid which car flames have been know to also ignite the house too so then they would already have backup on hand.

      They aren't fire fighters. They don't have the protective clothing, nor the education to know whether or not the car may explode, and how much time they have.

      If they put water on straight away it would not have grown into what it was a total loss

    • @NealB123
      @NealB123 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No garden house is putting that out even from the start. The engine is on fire. With the hood closed, there's no way to hit the fire with a garden hose.

    • @golftooter
      @golftooter 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Water is water and it will cool the fire down to below the point of combustion. I put out a transmission fluid fire in my Jeep Wagoneer without raising the hood with a garden hose sprayed through the grill. All the insulation on the wires was melted but not burned off and I drove the Jeep after getting the transmission rebuilt.
