So many people don’t realize the trauma first responders witness, along with emergency room, sicu, burn unit, even tow truck drivers. The images we see can not be unseen. You never forget the sight or the smell. Our vets experience the same. For most who do this, the thought of doing anything else just doesn’t exist. It’s been many years since I left the environment of the sicu & burn unit, but I still have the vivid memories of what I saw & what I did. I regret we were not able to save everyone, but I know we worked like crazy to save as many as we could. I have great empathy for all of those who are on the front line and give their all. Thank you just is not enough. Prayers to all of you as you do what most can not.

I use to run as a volunteer EMS and remember a MVA with 3 severe burn victims, one was still very close to the car but she needed to be evaluated and treated. So in I went, my firefighters dropped a protective tarp over the small group of us and fought the fire over our heads. She had 3rd and 4th degree burns over approx. 50% of her upper body but was still alive. The smell of that will stay with me forever. Also I was coming from a location above the fire and stopped, our rigs were coming in from the direction below the fire so alone for a few minutes And I ended up in the ER with a whopping case of smoke inhalation in the end and arranged the transport of 2 of the burn victims from my stretcher in the ER. For the people going 'why didn't they start putting water on it immediately', you can't put water on a diesel fire. It just spreads the fire. Once they got there and the fire exploded, there was nothing they could do but watch until the foam truck got there. We had a similar accident in front of my job last year, fuel truck hit a stopped DOT vehicle and exploded. Both drivers didn't make it. My heart goes out to his family, that's got to be on the list of one of the worst ways to go. I hope they threw the book at the drunk driver who caused it. RIP sir.

We were alerted to the fire by a neighbor who had ready called 911. I'll never forget the feeling when we ran out the back door as the firefighters were running in the front. They had it out in about 15 minutes and throwing the smoldering stuff into the back yard and ckecking for hot spots about another hour. I remember how freaked out we were and how relaxed they seemed - just another day at the office. Nobody was injured and they were so incredibly supportive as we tried to process things. I can't begin to imagine the frustration of the firefighters in this incident but, as I learned during later industrial first aid training, you can't help anyone if you become another patient. Being a first responder is not a suicide pact.

This whole situation was heartbreaking when I first saw it. There was absolutely nothing anybody could do to save him. And watching the firefighters and ems have to wait and submit to the fire itself is so hard to watch. I hope the woman who killed him never sees the light of day. Because SHE should’ve been him. He lost his life for NOTHING because she wanted to do whatever it was that led her to drive on the wrong side of the road. And I bet the truck driver swerved out of the way so he didn’t kill her. May rest in peace. May she rot in prison.

It might surprise some that the entire taker probably would not explode. The fuel in the truck is flammable but not explosive, so when something with fuel explodes, it’s because of the pressure rupturing the tank. Most of not all tanker trucks are equipped with pressure relief valves that prevent the pressure from rupturing the tank. The explosions you saw were probably tires popping and the trucks own gas tank rupturing. I know no one asked, but this is a cool fact to know. To me at least.

The same reason they feel that way is the same reason we feel that way about them. Its because they bear the weight of protecting. That comes at a cost both physically and emotionally.
