      Yup. That's what I wanted to see. Aggressive and risky to where it pays off sometimes, but sometimes you lose the gamble.

      exactly what i was thinking. Aggressive usually is slower, especially in the long run, but 2 seconds slower and driving like a complete ass-hat swerving and missing every apex is pretty bloody good.

      exactly a slight slide where you leave black marks on the ground but no smoke this is f****** ridiculous when did Motor Trend try to be a comedy channel is this the problem with a larger audience now you have to make the retards happy that have the attention span of a mouse. I want technical this was a great idea executed like it was done by a 12 year old

    • @nitro677racing
      @nitro677racing 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      You guys need to relax, this channel has 5 million subs and only 1 or 2 percent are actual drivers. I like to show these videos to younger drivers so they understand the point without getting too technical. Once they grasp the concept, I then get technical

    • @nitro677racing
      @nitro677racing 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What I mean by drivers is racing drivers or people who track their car

    • @nitro677racing
      @nitro677racing 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've coached karting for kids (real karting, as in the sport) and I always tell them to be smooth, calm and have patience especially at the start of races. Because it's not about going balls to the wall aggressive in the first corner that's gonna win the race. If you watch good or professional drivers, you'll see them PUSH the driver in front of them on the straights, then make their move in the corners when the person in front makes a mistake.

    • @KrOmEiFiCaTiOn
      @KrOmEiFiCaTiOn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that professionals tend to make their moves when they put their opponent under pressure and their opponent messes up, but the starts of races are very important too.

    You know, you can drive aggressively without drifting around like a slowpoke ricer.

    • @KevinSmith-qi5yn
      @KevinSmith-qi5yn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The thing they are getting at is driving at the limits not over the limits. To understand the limits you need to be aggressive enough to reach the limits. If you can take a turn at 83 MPH before you lose traction, it's both slower to take it at 80 and 85. You also have to keep in mind your brakes, tire, and vehicle wear for more endurance type races like Indy and Nascar.

    Dunno. I thought there would be a balance between show and the scientific method.
    Instead it was all just a really prolonged way to tell someone that smooth is faster without explaining it.

    • @aluisious
      @aluisious 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They pretty much covered it discussing corner entry and exit, tire temperature, "outdriving the tires." Wasn't really scientific but that's the case.
      Except when you give Ben Spies or Casey Stoner a bike. There's no explanation for that.

    • @erdinca.2448
      @erdinca.2448 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      aluisious The discussion was really insufficient though. No depth in the arguments.
      Actually those were more statements instead of explanations or arguments.
      There are many situations and many cars with which you dont just overheat and overdrive the tyres just by pushing the cars limits.
      Especially if its only one round, i almost guarantee you that you cant overheat a decent racing tyre... unless you compete in formula d, of course...

      Randy, I enjoy to see you enjoy your job the way you do (even though I'm asking myself is the drive in theater scenes are really necessary, but I understand the "driving" point you are trying to make) even if it's not necessarily new concepts to me after doing auto-x for years in different cars, then corner working and driving HPDE evens for longer. I love seeing you indiscriminately thrash cars around the cali tracks you do. I've left my cars in the US and am working overseas in Denmark where the tax on all cars is beginning at %120, so I get to practice my racing line via bicycle for now. A lot of my friends miss understand the meaning of smooth.. they always drive well under the limit, telling me that smoother is faster so they couldn't possibly go any faster. They call me aggressive but I don't actually slide the car, I'm just testing the limits and traction several times throughout the corner but still very smooth.
    This video did not help them understand as the aggressive guy was just being an idiot, all over the place and sliding the car.
    Why doesnt he just get some rotation and correct the steering every now and then? And the smooth guy maintain full traction the whole time with no rotation?

  • @philspaghet
    @philspaghet 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It is true that smooth lends to better lap times, but aggression is vital when attempting to overtake opponents. For example, on a corner entry, you might brake later than usual and give up corner exit speed but if you time it correctly, you can overtake an opponent and stay ahead because you are blocking them off until you have to brake for the next corner, which you'll have to take smoothly and regain momentum

    Randy can sure hold his own for his own channel! Yeah, it was over the top, and I'd have preferred seeing 'aggressive' without over-the-top wasteful extra kick-outs (the ones in the corners were fine, but it looks like a few were thrown in), but we sorta get the point. That aside, Randy - congrats on your show, and thank you. Keep in mind that you don't have to prove anything to us by being the ultra-showman - most of us would be just happy even if you gave us a dry lecture, lol; you're already well known.

    It's not a case of either : or - you need to be both. You need to sit the vehicle on the limit of its performance, where it gives the best and quickest result. Being too smooth will slow you down, although the best and quickest drivers are still incredibly smooth. Being too aggressive will certainly slow you down. What do you need to be? Young or rich or good looking or strong or happy? Don't be bl00dy stupid - you need to be all of them!

    So we all accept that smooth is faster, but take someone like Lewis Hamilton a notably aggressive driver, how does he manage to be quick while also being aggressive? Is it that he brakes just that 1% hard and 1% later, getting just a bit closer to the tires limit?

  • @peachbunns

    Aggressive does not mean power sliding off corners and brainlessly stepping on the gas. The differences between the two is much more subtle.
    Smooth drivers tend to emphasize corner exit over mid-corner speed, which means much more disciplined braking before corner-entry, and meticulous placing of the car on the apex as they get back on the throttle in linear (not gentle, gentle is slow) fashion. Aggressive drivers believe in mid-corner speed as the holy grail of a lap time. They will usually trail brake into a corner and quite possibly lock a wheel or two at the peak of their braking (which usually doesn't affect lap time). On exit, they generally struggle for traction due to their high apex speed which forces the car to the outside of the track. With high lateral g-force acting on the tyres, its difficult to make them keep the car on the track as well as keep it moving forward at the same time, hence the wheelspin.
    Is smooth better than aggressive? Ayrton Senna was a really fast racing driver, and not many would describe his driving style as smooth. It really depends on the racing situation. Over a single qualifying lap, many would agree being aggressive is more rewarding. In endurance races, however, tyre longevity and protecting the car's mechanical parts become more of a priority, hence a smooth driving style usually pays off.

  • @TimVo

    i think both smooth and aggressive were too dramatized. mr. aggressive was cutting corners and sawzawing the wheel at random points. I'd love to see a true comparison.

  • @brandonvanderveen1332
    @brandonvanderveen1332 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Overall I think smooth is almost always faster. However, there are times to be aggressive, just not too aggressive. Look at dirt track racing. Drivers can drive really smooth, but if they need to make a pass they’ll throw it into the corner hard and pull a slide job. However, you have to be careful not to be too aggressive doing that. I’ve seen guys throw it in too hard and they’ll push up the track too much on the exit and get passed back. You have to find that happy medium

  • @djhero0071
    @djhero0071 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Honestly, I wouldn't have said it was due to the tires. The way it looked,the aggressive driver was driving too erratically and didn't have a racing line. He was turning more than he should've and sacrificed time. The smooth driver was driving with a pattern,not wasting momentum and energy going all out on the corners. That's just my take on it though

  • @danieldiggs7843
    @danieldiggs7843 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If Smooth got a 1:35:39 lap time but had a 2 second head-start, Aggressive turning in anything faster than 1:37:39 would mean that Aggressive won.
    Aggressive scored a lap time under that - 1:37:15.
    How was "Smooth" declared the win here?

      Depends, that would only be if they started the clock for both when Smoooth took off, however, if Aggressive's clock started when he went hammer down, all that slip-slidey noise and action was doing is slowing him down coming out of the corners and affecting how much speed he had at the ends of the straights. Take a fast or at least capable car and put a chucklehead like Mr. Aggressive at the wheel, he might find it difficult to keep up with Mr. Spooooth, even if he is in something that would be more likely to be found climbing over obsticals the size of that Miata than putting down lap times...........even if Aggressive's car is on grippy summer tires and Smooooth is rolling on All-Terrains.

    Agreed, in general the only time overpowering the drive wheels is of any benefit is if you need to increase slip angle beyond what the car could normally do at speed, a hairpin on a steep grade comes to mind, burning rubber on the track rarely ever improves lap times.

    I think that's an over exaggeration of aggressive vs smooth, aggressive driving in a sense should produce a faster lap while the smooth driving preserves the tire.

    Yeah, I was really looking for an argument of entering a corner with lots of momentum and carrying it through vs. coming in hot and using heavy braking to hit the apex.

    I love this series, I'm familiar with all the content but it's put into good context so I end up showing it to younger drivers. It's hard to explain how to be smooth and apexes to a four year old in karting😂

    Ok...this went A LOT smoother. BF Goodrich plug went almost perfect...relax more next time and it will go a lot better next time. Be casual about it. We all need sponsors and money...free content is not created with free budgets...sadly.
    All in all a good episode...funny scene and all. 😂👍
    Keep up the good work.😎

  • @stevenhs8821
    @stevenhs8821 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Aggressive drivers don't want to be slow ever. Smooth drivers know that you want to be slow when you need to be slow, but keep the slow part as small as possible. If you are totally neutral at the apex by being smooth all your traction can be devoted to turning and you'll actually be taking the turn faster. It is a matter of using all of the traction you've got to get going in the direction you want to go. Almost forgot, static traction is higher than dynamic--or if you are sliding or spinning you have less traction.
