How do I launch a manual transmission? The process of launching a manual transmission is straight forward, but there are a few variables you need to adjust for optimizing your speed.
    1. Press the clutch in.
    2. Apply throttle, holding the RPM at a desired speed.
    3. Release the clutch.
    4. When the clutch starts to grab, apply more throttle and modulate as necessary to control wheel spin.
The trickiest part will be determining what RPM you should start the launch with, and it will likely take a few tries to get it just right. Too much throttle and the tires will likely spin. Not enough throttle and the acceleration will be slow in comparison. It's also important to smoothly, but fairly quickly, release the clutch. Too slow and you can burn up the clutch, too fast and you could cause drivetrain damage if the tires do not slip.
This video will feature 0-60 launches of several different cars, including the VW Golf R, Ford Mustang GT, Chevy Camaro SS, Subaru WRX, Mazda MX-5, and Subaru BRZ. Times will be posted for comparison with Motor Trend and Car And Driver.

AT has a big disadvantage, at least in my opinion: you are likely to forget how fast you are going because with MT you focus on what gear you are in and what RPM you are at, which is very hard with AT because you dont have to pay attention to that, basically. I hope you understand what I mean.

I run a performance setup on every car I ever owned. Always loved manuals, shift when I want to at the appropriate time. Going down hill, I keep it in low gear, the engine brakes for me, no need to fry my brakes. Going up hill on a steep slope, keep it in first or second, all the way, no need to shift, easy climb, no problem. Traffic is a pain but it outweighs the benefits, for me.

    • @stonedmole2351

+Doc T'Soni in France you get taxes if you buy an automatic something like 3000€ pro cars +3000€ which is the cost of the automatic version so a car without an at which cost 20 000€ = 26 000€ with the at

In my opinion an uprated clutch helps a lot. With the standard clutch in most cases, you are forced to almost dump the clutch. If you try to moderate the pressure, you always end up spinning it and only releasing the trottle makes it grab.
With an uprated clutch (beeing hidraulical helps too) you can moderate the pressure that you apply to a certain amount. This helps a lot with keeping traction, but also to avoid mechanical damage.

  • @DjRjSolarStar
    @DjRjSolarStar 8 ปีที่แล้ว +84

Yea, launching is extremely bad for a normal street car without very strong drivetrain components and a racing clutch. I do not advise anyone with a stock clutch try to launch their car from above 2000 RPM. I have a Stage 2 Exedy clutch, and even still I have never intentionally launched my car due to concerns over breaking a gear in my car. Accidentally dropped the clutch at 6000 RPM one time while panic accelerating and lit my tires up in a massive cloud of white smoke. Before I had the Stage 2 clutch, a friend launched the car from 4000 RPM and broke my transmission housing by ripping the rear mount off of it and dumping all the gear oil onto the pavement.
Moral of the story, DO NOT TRY THIS unless your car is built for it, you know what you are doing, and don't mind measurably decreasing your clutch life every time you do it.

What?? i drive a stockish 99 civic with a b18c jdm gsr swap and launch at 3-4rpm with no problems over 5years. and if you dump your clutch at 6000rpm of course your going to roast your tires. i know my car would continue spinning when going into 2nd gear.

I think you are a bit exaggerating... drivetrains are not made out of paper. Sure, the clutch or semiaxis may blow after some time... but I launched my car numerous times, and still have the clutch and drivetrain in one piece after 50k km (06r Subaru Forester XT, so the clutch has really hard time as it is awd). I would say - have fun, but be reasonable about it :)

I actually had another Forester before the XT, it had a automatic gearbox (traditional hydrokinetic, it was 05r model) - this was the main reason I sold it and looked for a manual one (+ I wanted to have the turbo :D ). The gearbox was not bad though - it was very smooth, and was extremely useful when I was offroading (in my opinion it was much better than the manual with the low range that was available for the non turbo versions) and was almost indetructible - it was the only car component that I was not worried about at all. What I didn't like about it was that it had only 4 gears, wasn't fast enough and I couldn't change the gears when I wanted to (no paddles or sport shift in my model) and as I am spending 95% time o tarmac and enjoy winding roads, manual gearbox was a lot better for me :) So, I wouldn't say the subarus automatic transmissions from that time period were bad, they just don't suit everyone...

It's crazy how the perfect launches are achieved when you're not even trying.
Rain outside, diesel engine so loads of torque, however I had a few launches where the revs were just right and the release speed of the clutch was optimal. Zero wheel spin, no clutch burn and probably a perfect 0-60 time if I were to continue.
Any other time I try I tend to use the drag race stile of dropping the clutch completely (great when using ceramic clutches) and this leads just to wheelspin on a normal car.

Great technical evaluation, but the reality is you need to learn this through repetition. You bring back so many memories of our drag races....1971! Dude, I wore out a set of tires in 5K miles and got grounded when the local dealer stated to my Dad...."have you seen your son drive" LOL. It wasn't just the "launches", but the driving attitude. Thank God I lived through it. Still, to this day I have a strong desire to race. I loved cross country races (rural Pennsylvania) and won many with a huge horsepower disadvantage.
BTW, my rule was "if you can't keep it in your lane, you're out of control". That served me well.

finaly someone who takes gearing into account. here in europe, we have many turbodiesels with a high peak torque plateau (f.e., 500nm at 2000-3000rpm) and you often hear that reving further makes it going slower. in fact, even if you only got 350nm at 4000rpm left, most of the time your wheel torque will still be higher in the smaller gear. hard to get that into peoples minds ;)

Yeah the central diff can explode if you do a hard launch with sticky tires. You can also wreck the transmission, it's from the power of the engine being dumped into a single point with a ton resistance. Though the part of the benefit of an AWD high hp car is that you don't have too hard launch, just launch normally and you'll spank most RWD/FWD cars.

Thanks to learning heel and toe myself (actually it's not a perfect heel and toe, rather putting my right foot perfectly between brake and gas pedal) I can now do a Launch control even when I have to keep the brake pedal pressed down. Left side of your right foot keeps the brake pedal - at the same time try to turn/spin your foot to the right -> pressing down the throttle. Build up even small 1800-2000 rpms. then here comes the green light, release the clutch, roll off your right foot to the right, so it slides gently from the brake to the gas pedal. Thanks to this method, my 105 HP E36 316i 1.9 Compact owns almost every single car from line - ofc it is not a race, but rather a dynamic start :)

Great methods to get the best 1/4 mile times...and spend the most $$$$ on clutches. For the 99% of the time you don't need a max performance takeoff, use the minimum throttle and clutch slip needed to get moving. Don't punch the throttle until the clutch is fully out. Use the same technique to shift, minimum throttle and slip. Do this and save your clutch lining for those few times you need a jackrabbit start.

You didn't mention the pint point of the clutch, which is very important for a launch. You need to find the point where the clutch starts engaging and squeeze just a little bit, so you don't cause too much wear for the clutch. Many modern cars tend to have a lot of empty space in clutch pedal between the bottom and the pint point, so it is almost impossible to lift it all the way up from the floor to fully engaged quickly and accurately.

still don't get how the clutch can transmit so much energy, it's just a thin plate pressed against metal 😶

Its really rough like sandpaper, so there is a lot of friction between the clutch and flywheel.

Also if you have ever driven a car with a non hydraulic , cable operated clutch and a decent sized engine in traffic your left leg soon realises the actual pressure force of the clutch spring plate.

Never dump your clutch. Having something spinning at high speed and something stationary and smashing them together is a great way to break something. There's gonna be a bit of clutch slip if you do it properly.
