The importance of The Moody Blues is their message that there was a higher purpose, that there actually was a spiritual nature which one could choose to attain if only one would strive.
It seems as if most of my generation has forgotten that which we once knew for certain was true.

    Very well said Harry!
You know, at 69 years old I have had my "ears blessed" by the Moody Blues ever since 1970 when I discovered them.

Snap! Even to the age. Except for my envy at you seeing them so many times. They didn't make it to my home town often - we're one of the most isolated cities in the world, and every time they came, I had something come up that prevented me. I was backpacking around the US in my twenties at the same time as one of their many tours, but I was never in the right place at the right time. I finally caught them about ten years ago, and it's still one of the highlights of my life.

When you are a teenager you find your favourite band and really become a fan and stick to them. To me that was the Moody Blues. I bought all their albums even bootlegs and went to see them a few times. They are the soundtrack to my life. Whenever i felt as if things were getting too hard for me a Moodies poem always pulled me through and still does.

Face piles and piles of trials with smiles

I think we all felt this way about their lyrics and music. The first spiritual group I listened to back then, they made you think about all of you, not just the physical part of you. We all know where we are when we first wake up and our soul comes back to our bodies in the morning (the dead and the living), it's a magical/mystical God connection we have and can have all the time with God in our hearts.

I didn't look at all the comments, but many and didn't see an odd fact about this song/ Apparently this is about Justin Hayward's dad who died. The lyric "There lies a land I once lived in and she's waiting there for me", was a studio required change. It was suppose to be and HE'S waiting, as it is about his dad. To me that makes the song even more powerful.

It does sound like the live version because it has so many instrumental elements compared to the studio version. In the studio version it contains Mike Pinder playing the Mellotron. In the live version it has the assistance of the orchestra and the two keyboard musicians. There is a distinct difference. It's a beautiful composition by Jusin Hayward and the lyrics paint the listener a picture of learning about life and love. Furthermore, he speaks of an awaken in the morning where he can see things, life, and events more clearly.

Back in the day, the fans were convinced by this song and others that the Moody Blues knew the philosophical answers to the universe. The band were pestered so much they wrote "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band". You should definitely hit that next!

This song always reminds me of the Summer of 70', riding in the back of a Volkswagen Van and not a 17 year olds care in the world.

One doesn’t have to be presumptive about his/her world….he/she chooses to…..It’s only when you question everything, that you begin to truly “learn”.

I am glad you are feeling the Moody Blues! Harri, you have been very generous with your interpretation of them. It can’t be 2 songs because they are taking you on their journey! I have listened to them since the 60’s

I loved this band right from the beginning. ❤ The 60's was a time of looking inward. Questioning the world and gaining spiritual insight. Their music was along that line. I was lucky to see them live back in the 80's. Cheers

You are spot on when you talk of this being two songs. Justin explains that he wrote two different songs and ultimately joined them together to form this one outstanding song. The heavy beginning with fast acoustic guitar followed by the slow melodic middle section before resuming with fast upbeat section where the song began. More drums and vocals giving a far heavier sound. One of the best songs cleverly put together with both a fantastic tune and meaningful thought provoking lyrics. Many more where that came from.

Harribest, You hit the nail right on the head. I'm very happy that you have listened to the song and it has gone to your heart That is a masterpiece song I remember first sharing the song years and years ago and it blew me away. In a talent show actually played rhythm guitar to this song many years ago with an Epiphone Explorer. Boy that brings back memories. You know good tasting songs when you hear them for sure. 9:14

Love that you love this song as I do. Semi-spiritual songs are my favorites. They feed my soul, the real me, and help advance my essence back to its true home. The drop will reach the sea of consciousness with the help of such uplifting music.

All their records of the 60 and beginning of the 70 are so wonderful, both music and lyrics. Earcandy.

Justin wrote 2 songs with Question, and worked them both together to produce this epic song from Question of Balance. It reached number 2 on the UK singles charts. Awesome band that never disappointed. Loved all their albums. A year ago today we lost Graeme. RIP
