Any song from their seven concept album stretch suffers from lack of context if removed from the surrounding parts. Still, S tier for me.

This was not meant to be a stand alone track. This is an album, not one song. Someone should have told you. Too bad. Moody Blues one of the best story-telling groups ever.
Great point, and true of any real concept album or rock opera. They'd probably have the same problem with the title track to Jesus Christ Superstar too, for example.

I saw the Moody Blues in 1971
The Moody Blues made some truly perfect music as an amazingly skilled group of musicians.
I personally think the song is a masterpiece, but again it is in a style that would never be popular today. The fast and slow sections are both needed for the message the song was trying to get across. I think that "modern" tastes can't stand the moments of silence either. Current music is so loud and "busy" it can't tolerate silence of any type. I see the silence as a moment of thought within the flow of the song and is part of the music and not a lack thereof.
I would add that we thought about the lyrics and contemplated them. The pause between songs on a album, the pause in the music when you had to flip the vinyl... actually all important to the experience!

Yeah, I think the middle section Alex didn't like is fantastic, both musically and lyrically. But as you say, it's far from the style of anything today.
I truly thought for a long time this was the most beautiful song ever made next to maybe ELO's Mr Blue Sky. I was lucky enough to see them perform live in LA 3rd row. This song brought me to tears.
Alex--damn you blew this one...usually you are sharp and on target. The transitions are super on target and part of their progressive lean. This is S tier and one of their all time great songs.

I'm 36 and when I first heard this song 6 years ago, it blew my mind. I think it's a masterpiece. The start and stops or pauses don't bother me in the least. I could listen to him do it another 10 times. The start is like the chaotic minds of all the people in the world shouting all their questions, even if it's just inside their heads, now we get to hear it. But then we get the section of quiet reflection, including a soul wrenching plea, before returning back to the chaos that is life. And if you give it a second listen you'll see it's not that confusing or misleading. The middle section has 2 verses followed by the "looking for someone to change my life" chorus, followed by another 2 verses and the chorus again then finally repeating the initial verse to round it off. After that it's back to the bookend repeat of the opening section. My only problem with the song is the abrupt fade out.
Agree with all of that, and the abrupt ending without a more gradual fade-out is not as noticeable on the greatest hits titled “ This is the Moody Blues”.
That was a Moody Blues _thang..._ a song within a song. Sometimes, they had a song, within a song, within another song, and then cycle back to the beginning. I loved that about them. Not everything is about a _4-minute radio song._
If I had a critique about the Moodies it was... _too much reverb on the background vocals._ Even back in the 1970s, the excessive reverb sounded dated. Other than that, I liked their stuff a lot.

It's not about being false endings, it's about letting it ring out and resonate, not rushing through the beautiful words.
I think Nancy Wilson once said the furious strumming of this song helped to inspire her to write Heart's song "Crazy On You." One of the better Moody Blues songs.
I believe I've read the same thing recently. The other furious strumming song I always think of is "Pinball Wizard"

It’s the concept era. Pinball Wizard is one of the concept storytelling albums. I’m 70 and lived through those times and have to say the era has never been matched, nor ever will be. I love To Our Children’s, Children’s Children by the Moodies.

Not only do I love this original version, but I also really like the remake they did in 1988 with the London Symphony Orchestra. The "slower" part of the song is some of the most...powerful...music I've ever heard. Just phenomenal. I would die on the hill that this isn't just S, but on a higher plane of S. ~Be Blessed

Yep - I never heard them as ‘false stops/endings’. While I’m not a serious Moody Blues fan, I respect that there is an artistic vision at work to convey the message and it might need another listen on a different day to find a new perspective.
I agree I love the song. The middle section might be a little long for some. But I think with the topic being discussed it makes sense to slow down and have some pregnant pauses.
This song actually starters two separate songs written by Justin Hayward (guitar and lead vocals), one a protest song influenced by the turbulent time and the other a love song, both written in the same key. When the need arose for another song for the album, Justin took his two partially completed songs and combined them to create an anthem for the time. It sums up the conflict felt by many… the world is heading down a road that I am in fear of and I don’t like what is happening (first section), but through introspection I see that my own personal life could be so much better if I could find a love that completes me (slower second section), then turning away from that introspection and returning to seeing the problems of the world. This isn’t something that you grasp the first time you listen to it. It’s really a brilliant song and the musicianship on display is fantastic! Gray Edge was one of those underrated drummers that aren’t really appreciated until you hear his performance on this song. RIP, Gray… we miss you!
I understand how the song can have the kind of reaction Alex had. The "flow" threw me the first time, too. But after listening the second or third time, the "stops" are what make it special!!
I remember hearing this at a friend’s house in 1970. Now I’m 70! Still sounds impressive. My brother bought Ride My Seesaw in 1967 and I bought Go Now! in 1965. And then On The Threshold Of A Dream in 1969. Where has the time gone? A ‘Question’ that is impossible to answer.

Yep, I totally get what you are saying. My memories hit so hard from back in the 70's. I wanted to go back there SO HARD! This world now is SHIT compared to back then. So many of their albums have such great music. Alex needs to get a good bottle of red wine and sit back in a relaxing chair/bean bag and chill out big time. It's. not all about Rock and Roll...

Wow Alex you were tripping on this one. Dude, the middle section makes it a classic with its heartfelt and soaring vocals, I couldn't care less how many times it stops and starts. This is my favorite song by them by far, with its incredible instrumentation, magnificent arrangement and amazing vocals. Do me a favor, Alex, and revisit this because you definitely whiffed on this.
I could be wrong, but I think Alex considers The Moodies to be a "sappy" band. or "corny".....same-same.
Justin hayward is 1 of my favorite singers. The middle section highlights the passion in his vocals.
I never thought of the middle section as a series of starts and stops. It never hit me that way. That middle section is one of the most beautiful of their songs.
The first time I actually heard this song was on a replay of an American Top 40 broadcast from 1970. This song was in the top 40 at the time and when it played on the show, I do admit I didn’t know what to make of it at first. It didn’t hit me right away like Nights in White Satin or Tuesday Afternoon. After I started buying the old Moody Blues albums and heard the song a few more times I loved it.
This is an S tier song, especially in concert. I saw the Moody Blues in the 80's when The Voice and Wildest Dreams were in heavy rotation on MTV.
If only they were more like Tool…
It is a weirdly structured song. But over time with familiarization comes acceptance. Andy is right. It IS an acquired taste. But the drama atmosphere and dare I say, artistry, eventually rules out. Take it from someone who took that journey. This is an iconic progressive Rock anthem.
Speaking of 'Wings'... you've yet to hit "Uncle Albert" by them. Perhaps the most weirdly structured pop songs of all time yet a *massive* hit back in the day. Would love to see Alex's reaction to it.
Well said I think with time and familiarization this song will grow on you; so many times you just got to listen to a song a few times and then you just love it. I never thought it to be disjointed just a creative way to convey their artistry.

It's actually a medley: "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey", two songs mashed together.
Definitely an epic, gorgeous song-both sections are glorious in their own right. The slow middle makes me teary eyed every time. The lyrics are superb and Justin’s voice is EVERYTHING here. Now that you know what to expect, Alex, listen again and try to just let it take you on the journey.
Huge hit for them. I believe it was their biggest hit. "S" level for me. But the Moody Blues were an album band and you need to hear the flow of the whole album.
I grew up listening to this group & they are one of my favorites from the 60's-80's. Love their mix of rock with classical music. They have a sound like no other band. Many of their records are concept albums & meant to be listened to all at once. "Question" is the first song on their 6th album "A Question Of Balance" from 1970.
The Moody Blues are like falling in a dream. You may not understand the dream.. but it's always magical.
Tuesday Afternoon is a must by MB. I would also recommend Gemini Dream from their 80s era.

This was _such_ a great song on stage, a show highlight every time I saw them play. It remains near and dear. Sorry, Alex. "The Story in Your Eyes" and 1986's "In Your Wildest Dreams" also took listeners for a fun ride.
You rarely ever hear any cover versions of a Moody Blues song.....nobody can imitate or enhance their unique and majestic sound!
Strange that the only cover to hit big was "Simple Game" by The Four Tops. It is one of their least known songs, but hit no.3 in the U.K.

Young guy here that was raised on the Moody Blues. The point of their songs and albums is they tell stories. I think that concept is lost on people these days. For me that's what makes great music great.
You are so right. As I recall, a little THC enhanced the pleasure of just listening.
Not false stops... quiet contemplation and a contrast to the struggles in the world (the first part and the end). Listen again... read the lyrics. It reminds me of a day I was going crazy in the hustle of Tokyo and made a right into a zen garden and found quiet contemplating before stepping back into the crowds and getting my day done.

You guys. You guys. I think you're not feeling the journey. It's two songs together, but it's a movement within. A sandwich, and if you listened again, those stops and starts are a joy to hear. It's about the interlude, the space between what we want and what we get. The more you hear it, the more it feels so right!

C+?!?! Are you high? This is an A+ tier track for me. I think the difficulty comes in that this is essentially two songs melded into one. Justin Hayward had stated that it was two unique concepts he had, but each one felt incomplete - so he found a way to make the 'slower' piece a longer 'middle eight'. Your honesty is appreciated, however!
This track completely fits in the 'concept' that is the album - A Question Of Balance.
I highly suggest Melancholy Man from this same album, or Dawning Is The Day.
One of my favorites. Justin's voice. The middle/slow section is perfection.
S-tier masterpiece. The chill-enducing clarion horn sections (at the beginning and after the interlude) are timeless.
You gotta understand that Moody Blues are their own entity and genre. Their talent and deep lyrics cant be denied...with or without your approval

Moody Blues are album artists. The album "To Our Children's Children" is, to me, their best and should be heard in its entirety. Best to listen to it alone when life hands you a bad day and you question your existence.

Although Days of Future Passed has the two mega hits I think Children is probably my favorite of their albums.
My favorite of the post-core 7 albums would have to be Long Distance Voyager. After that I feel the albums got weaker. A couple great songs but not as consistent and they were more Hayward-Lodge projects, no longer full band projects like the early years.
Love TOCCC, but still put “Days” and “On the Threshold of a Dream” ahead of it. Pretty hard to choose, tbh.

🎼I took my percussionist father to see them on his 72nd birthday. He loved Graeme Edge’s drumming. I love Justin Hayward’s voice and guitar work. They are real artists. How Alex could give them a C+ just tells me he needs a Question of Balance. The era was the “concept” albums. The songs are linked conceptually. Get high, lay back and Listen. You will learn some stuff and especially the fact that each artist, no matter who they are, has their own style. Andy and his A+ made me smile. Listen to the Moodies in sequence albums 1-7. You will not regret it.🎼
This song was indeed pieced together from two separate songs. And if you think it suffers from that, I can understand why.
I love the Moody Blues, but I appreciate them more on an album level than on an individual song level.
I think one of the songs is much better than the other.
They pieced parts together sometimes, yet somehow it still tends to work anyway. And I think that just shows how together they were as a group. And surely mixing styles is a typical progressive trait. Those who prefer more straightforward rock may not appreciate it.

Not many groups played mellotrons, but of those few who did, Moody Blues were the masters.
The Moody Blues really deserve the full album treatment. I knew from the title of this video that Andy would be more positive toward this song than Alex, because of his longer and greater exposure to Pink Floyd. In a lot of respects, I feel they are two sides of the same coin of orchestral rock.
In the 70's I listed with headphones to this album for hours. So Good! and this song is so timely to day.

Mike Pinder and his Mellotron bring this song to such an unbelievable level. He is one of my greatest influences as a keyboard player.
Yes the Pindertron, his engineering of that instrument was insane and very sorely missed when he left the band.

"Commanding" would be a good description of this classic track. Beautifully conceived and arranged. The middle section doesn't have false endings, it has pauses in the same tempo as the slowly sung verse. But those aren't "endings" - false or otherwise.
I think its called progressive music. How boring if all songs were paced the same.
I saw them live three times. Every time, the musicianship, vocals, harmonies were spot on studio perfect. Few bands can pull that off.
This is actually one of those songs that you can actually change your mind about after some listens. Now you KNOW about the stops and starts, so it will no longer be a “trust” issue. You can then focus on the words and the scoring vocals. One of the very few times I would ask someone to listen to a song again a couple of times and see if it changes your opinion.
This came out during the Vietnam War so there were lots of questions especially since America was trying to drag Britain into the conflict. Sometimes you have to really listen to the lyrics instead of concentrating on the backing track.
Tuesday Afternoon is another good song of their's as is their very first hit Go Now and further onto Ride My SeeSaw.
I kind of think as the Go Now Moody Blues as a different band. Even Graeme Edge had said this. Especially since Justin Hayward and John Lodge were not yet in the band. Also because Go Now was a cover of a Bessie Banks song and a different style of the kind of music they would soon produce.
Have You Heard (Part 1)/The Voyage/Have You Heard (Part 2) is truly epic guys - somehow it always gets overlooked for Knights in White Satin and this one.
What it evokes to me is the frantic dichotomy between the big “questions” and the intimacy of personal relationships over which a person can control or get an answer.
Exactly! The internal struggle experienced by many of having big concerns (about the world and society) and more personal concerns (finding the love that completes you and makes your life perfect).
I love this song. The lyrics and Justin's delivery are just sublime.
Bear in mind this was recorded in the Sixties on limited tracks.

I saw a video of Justin Hayward saying that he had 2 different songs and put them together for this song. I understand the comments but I have listened to it so many times that it will always be one of my favorite songs.
I just love The Moody Blues. Not everything has to be formulaic and structured to your expectations. Different is great, guys! It's what makes this song just plain awesome. I happily embrace every part of it. Maybe you'll need to revisit in a couple of decades.😉

I have to agree with Andy on this one. It's a great tune. One of my favorite MB tunes. The contrast between the rocking beginning, slow middle, and rocking finally is what hooked me. Loved it the first time I heard it many moons ago.
And oh, those Mellotrons... The Moody Blues used them in virtually everything!
To me this song is perfection. The singing is superb and the song structure is amazing.
With The Moody Blues, you have to lay your head back, close your eyes, clear your mind and LISTEN.
The song is structured ingeniously. You have the chaos of the world playing within someone's mind. That person tries to slow down life and have time for quieter reflection, but then the speed of life intrudes. It's a constant battle in the minds of many people. I can see how someone might like to have the distinct parts as separate songs but they have to be together to keep the theme intact. They are not false starts, Alex, just someone ruminating and trying to think in almost silence, tuning out all the 'noise', but all those thoughts and other people's words inevitably reappear. A brilliant paradigm. That said, I understand how it can be too sharp a change of pace for some people's ears and brain. I'm 60 now and even as a teenager I thought it was cool and a classic.
Never was a huge Moody Blues fan, but always enjoyed most of their songs, and this is one of them.

My Uncle introduced me to this wonderful band when I was a kid, and they will always hold a special place in my heart.
This is my favorite Moody Blues song. I always thought the chaos at the beginning of the song was someone looking for answers in a chaotic world. Then when things calm down in the middle the answers appear.
When I saw this titled “ we disagree hard” I knew Alex was going to dislike it and Andy was going to love it, as a teen in the 70’s I loved the Moody Blues.

As expected…Graeme Edge was a freaking beast on drums and with John Lodge’s driving bass this track can’t help but be outstanding
A problem is that young people today are so programmed into the concept of ~a song~ they pull up on demand on their ~playlist~ so that an unusual piece like this loses them in the different kind of flow. I have personally always adored the quiet middle section of this. It reminds me of some classical pieces that maybe have a similar kind of repetitive, quiet stop and start structure in the center of more robust bookends.
You mean like a minuet/scherzo and trio? Those who insist on one tempo are definitely making a choice than fully meeting the music.

For me, this song is one of the songs I think of when people talk about progressive rock. I think it's a great blend of rock with classical music. I like the middle section, I think the middle section is where they get into the point of the song. With lots of classic rock you have to listen to the whole song before you make a judgment. Imagine making your mind up on Stairway to Heaven somewhere in the middle! Things can change in these songs so I'd recommend holding off on any assumptions about where the song is going or when it's ending until you've heard the whole song.

You both loved it at the outset. The hard switch did it. I used to have issues with it, but I LOVE it now. The slow pieces are SO heartfelt and atmospheric. The rock parts are a great transition to happiness. You have to admit it was totally a BOLD choice. Songs do not do this generally.

This is an obvious S Tier, so I don't know what the disagreement is...but I'll tune in ....
The Moody Blues were kind of a bridge between psych rock and prog rock. Predated a lot of prog rock and probably influenced a lot of it. You could argue that a little of early prog rock in the late 60s sounded like this and was more disjointed than what came in the 70s. This type of sound was a spiritual successor to the style of The Beatles’ Abbey Road where the songs starts and stops overlap so much that you can have difficulty differentiating the tracks. It was a time for experimenting, and The Moody Blues are also a very album oriented band because of all the overlapping. The tracks often make more sense as part of the album’s whole.
Been a Moodys fan since 1964 when Go Now came out and bought every Album they brought out. I have seen them umpteen times and sadly watched as members left us but they also gave us a library that will live forever.
Forgot how great this song is. Might just have to hop down a Moody Blues hole tonight… 😮
Once you know the movements are in the song, after hearing a few times, it becomes a story arc and a thing of beauty.

Alex, so many times I hear you say, I love this part of a song or that part of a song but I don't like the sum of the song. Um, hello! The sum of a song IS this and that part of the song!
I believe you, at times, make a critique just to hear yourself talk. If you hadn't hated on this song so much, I'm positive Andy gives it an A+ if not an S. Would have loved to hear more of Andy's but your take dominated whatever buzz he had. You sway his ratings often and it drives me mad! Look at the historical critiques of this song and get a clue. A C+ is criminal! Or, as you said multiple times, "sad".

I was 11 in 1967 and first heard the Moody Blues. For better or worse, they brought me out of the pop and bubblegum that I thought was cool.
