The fact that she and Patti Labelle were tied for Grammys, they both won and Patti said Lisa did background vocals on her nominated song !! Mind you , Aretha Franklin, and Gladys Knight were also contenders for this Grammy. Speaks volumes of Lisa's talent.
I saw her when Luther went on tour and she was one of his BACKUP singers. This song had hit already. Luther gave her the spotlight right in the middle of his concert like she was his little sister. He was so proud of her! Her voice was soooooo pure like Luther's. She KILLED that this song and got a standing ovation! And yes, she hit that note!!!
Another indicator of just how great an artist Luther Vandross was, when his BACKUP singer is a once in a generation talent like the incredible Lisa Fischer!
She's one of the best singers I've ever heard. Can't believe I'm just now finding out about her. I've watched 3 live performances so far and they have left me almost speechless. The range, power and control is on another level. Usually singers have strengths and weaknesses that you can identify. I'm not hearing any weaknesses with her
She's like Whitney and Mariah combined!! And she could've been just as big as them. But she didn't want the limelight. Oh well. But thank you for blessing us with your gift Ms. Fischer! We truly appreciate it!
You said it. I saw her in concert right before Covid-19. She was ASTOUNDING!! I just wished she'd sung more songs from her album. This was the only one she did. With such a beautiful gift like this I just don't get why she didn't want to be a huge solo artist.

How can anyone possibly give this performance a thumbs down? She undoubtedly is a remarkable vocalist. And however she handled her career choosing the top end or being a background singer does not change the level of talent that she has. Stellar artist who without a doubt certainly is a star who ranks up there with the best of them. Great song.
to those who are wondering why Lisa never "became Mariah Carey"?...it was Lisa's choice. I encourage you to watch the documentary "20 Steps From Stardom", where she talks about it in length. And she basically says that what she thought would be a natural progression of her going solo, after singing for superstars, all of her adult life, "took too long". She was signed at Elektra Records..won a Grammy for the album that this song, is on...and she promoted the album with some touring. But when she thought a 2nd album was a sure-thing, she says it took too long, and she went back to making top dollar as a back ground singer. Lisa is a very bright woman. She never had delusions about being the next Whitney...but she knew her worth, too. And there were some things that she just wasnt willing to do, to take her talent to the highest level. She wanted piece of mind, more than a ton of money.
You guys in the comments are saying you wish she was still in the business. She still is!! She still tours. Go check her out when she’s in your town. She chooses to go in her own lane now. She’s a free spirit. ❤

She was very comfortable for many years singing backup for Luther Vandross until he died. She also was a prominent singer with Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones. She continued her singing career singing backup for Tina Turner until she retired. Now Lisa Fischer has completely changed her image and brand. She has stripped away the glitz and glamor as a sexy R&B diva and has settled in to a very bohemian relaxed jazz alternative artist.
