Throughout history, the Brits had always had a thing for soul music, most notably Northern Soul. And as evidenced here, and much like Teena Marie before her, Lisa's music then and now crosses all boundaries of pop, soul and R&B. This performance at the Apollo was legendary. The black community (and of course, the gays) embraced her groove way before the mainstream crossover audience did. Personally speaking, when I first heard this track, I myself thought she was black (I thought the same when I first heard Madonna's "Holiday). Then the music video came out and I was both stunned, enchanted and HOOKED! Lady Stansfield ruled, and still does today.

This is the early days...when Lisa conquered the US market....such a thrill & hornor for her to perform at such legendary venue, the Apollo Theater. I think Lisa was quite taken by the enthusiasm from the audience, she sang another chorus at the wrong place 2:01 lol, but having had many years of singing live experiences, she quickly realized it, spun around, and caught up the melody of the backing track 2:08 , its all good!

They have another video on TH-cam where she says "I sing the way I do because I've listened to a lot of black American music. Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, The Ojay's, The Jacksons. I just used to really get into it. While me mum was doing the Hoovering. (laughs) I'd be in front of the mirror with a hairbrush." She also said Barry White was a big influence for the first album. In another interview she says she liked Diana Ross when she was 4 or 5, then named Chaka, Gladys and Aretha.
