I heard the 1st officer didn't speak the same language as the captain. The Captain changed clothes before getting on a life raft so he would not be recognised as Captain. There were many stupid and insane things. Have you heard anything like this or anymore oddities?Perhaps this comment is premature. Nevertheless, I would like to thank you for your content. 😊😊

I really wish you had played the recording of the call to the captain. The pure unadulterated fury upon hearing that the captain is not on the ship helping is one of the greatest things ive ever heard

My favorite part of the call was when the Coast Guard commander told the Captain after the Captain straight up refused to go back, "I will personally make it my mission to destroy you. You understand me?" I felt that line in my soul. He was nicer to the Captain than I would be.
The Costa Concordia captain showed unbelievable bad seamanship.
Understandably, the Coast Guard skipper was furious. I would be that too.
That phone call was wonderful. The fury in the officer's voice, his comments, his orders. Perfect naval officer. And then, we have the Costa Concordia's Captain...😢
What’s funny is that I heard an interview later with Captain DeFalco, and he insisted that “I wasn’t angry at him. I was just trying to get him to do his damned job.” Another captain said that DeFalco realized that Schettino was in complete denial due to shock, and that DeFalco was trying to break through that shock and get him to act.
This rock is an inanimate object without the power to kill anyone. Captain Coward on the other hand, while his brain is also an inanimate object, still had the power to kill people, and he sure did so.

Not the fault of the rock, it was just sitting there and was run over by an incompetent captain and crew
It is still possible for a captain to spend time entertaining the guests, provided that he has a well trained and loyal crew to look after his ship.
In this case, it was a total shambles, with no one having specific responsibilities.
I felt sorry for the chief engineer, who was just ignored. As a chief engineer myself (not in shipping), everything technical is fully discussed, even by the directors. Fortunately I have never had to work with idiots.

This actually happened to the Royal Caribbean ship Monarch of the seas in St.Maartin in 1998 I beleive. They hit a reef and the bottom was ripped open but the captain knew it was sinking so he beached the ship and saved everyone.
They really shouldn’t piss Mother Nature off when they name vessels things lik "Monarch of the Seas" … the hubris 😂

I’m a pretty sound sleeper and once slept through a demolition that happened less than half a mile from my house. Apparently the actual explosion was heard 5 miles away.
My mum slept through an earthquake when she was 9. HER mother had run outside without bothering to check on her…there’s a reason her ashes are sitting in a plastic box near our fireplace😂

Ive heard the audio of DeFalco and Scatino and you can tell how absolutely PISSED he is as Scatino is trying to defend his cowardice.
Gregorio DeFalco seems like the only officer on the scene who had a real sense of right and wrong.

That one was so bad, not just the Captain was a coward like Schetino, but the entire coast guard literally preferred to pretend they had rescued everyone than admit they needed help.
Literally the US Navy’s USS Bonham Richard, and elements of the Japanese Navy were ready to deploy support within minutes of the disaster, but got told to get lost and that the SK coast guard would handle it. They handled it by discussing what they wanted for lunch and setting up a fake evacuation point for distressed parents to go to, just to really twist the knife in their heart and give them false hope.
God I remember this I hope all those bastards rot in hell all those innocent souls gone

Saw the wreckage in Genoa before it was cut up. The size and degree of damage were incredible. It literally rendered people speechless. That one mans arrogance could create such a large disaster is very concerning.

Here in Italy, "captain" Schettino has now became synonymous with shame, negligence and cowardice... If asked, no one wants to talk about him, and if s/he does it's with reluctancy.
I’m surprised Captain hasn’t offed himself due to publicly being labeled a coward. I’m guessing the fact that he’s in prison has limited his opportunity to attempt to kill himself, since in prison the inmates are usually watched like hawks 24/7. And at least in prison he can claim with some “pride” (for lack of a better word), that at least he’s not a pedophile (aka, “the worst of the worst”).

Costa cruises killed 33 people. The company let and is still letting its ship run exactly the same way. There was no discipline onboard and a culture of poor working conditions. A complaints book found onboard the wreck showed a catalogue of complaints from bullying to sexual harassment. Costa was very careful to cover this up. These ships are about profit first and safety second.
This guy is the exact opposite of the stereotypical Italian captain. In WWIII the Italian government issued a standing order to tgeir naval captains NOT to go down with the ship because so many chose to. 😂 A little over a decade later, the captain of the Andrea Doria had to be physically carried of the ship by his officers because he refused to leave, if im remembering that right. This guy couldn't wait to bail.
Schettino was an exception. I like to think that men like DeFalco are the norm.

Ive heard the coast guard and the captains exchange before but i didnt know this was the event that had caused this. Its amazing that no matter what the negative outcome that could result. I've just returned from my first cruise since Covid, and was shocked that they are not doing the evacuation drills anymore, you now have to meet up with a member of the crew in one of the bar/restaurant areas to be told that you should meet hime there in case of an emergency, he would then guide everyone to the lifeboat. Imagine if this crew man isn't there and you have a 50-60 passengers inside the ship wondering which way to go and what to do, it would be mass panic. I'd forgotten the information he gave us within hours unlike on previous cruises when you're forced to stand out on deck wearing your life vest in your allotted muster point for 20-30 minutes, at least you knew where to go.
That is the reason I would never again step foot on a cruise ship.

One thing I learned regarding this and many other incidents involving both cruise ships and luxury yachts is that it is a serious misconception to assume the captains and crews of these vessels are well trained professionals.
I’m glad you described the actual events that took place just after the ship hit the rocks many earlier descriptions made out like the captain did something right to get the ship where it ended up but he did nothing the people were lucky the ship drifted to a shallow area before completely sinking (experts knew this fact quite early on in the investigation)
Yes that's right! I remember the report saying that the captain intentionally beached the ship against the island, a complete contradiction of what appears to have happened according to this video!
This was an excellent video. There’s also a really interesting video that someone took all the videos the passengers made during this tragedy and put them all together for an hour documentary. It also has the coastguard captain ripping the pos captain a new one.
It's frankly amazing that there weren't more deaths, but it's infuriating this happened in the first place. I'm glad the captain is in jail.

That said, what a shame those people lost their lives because of the incompetency and complacency of Captain Coward. That audacity for him to catch a lifeboat while passengers were stuck, confused and terrified on board, is disgusting. Hope he enjoys his 16 year cinderblock-camp sleepover.

It amazes me what the crews tell passengers during something like this. The ship lurches, theres an insane grinding noise, the ship starts listing, and the crew is like "oh there was an electrical problem but its all set now, just go back to your cabin". Yea right. Im not leaping into the sea, but i am sure as hell going up on deck and finding some life jackets.
A villain was created that day but many heroes too.

It's unfortunate that some of the divers hired ended up getting caught stealing from the ship, it just brings a bad rep to the diving community. I originally learned about this tragedy and honestly incredible amount of cowardness found in the captain and some of the people involved through Internet Historian, and if you've finished watching this video and want to know a little more on the aftermath and some nuance details I'd recommend watching Internet Historian's video on it, after watching this one of course. Great vid as always, I'm inching closer to have seen all the videos in your channel and not a single one I've watched so far has anything negative I could say about it, great research, great narration, great script, and lovely host. Thanks for creating these amazing videos, I know they'll blow up in popularity in no time.

@@LiberatedMind1 If you're an enthusiast or an amateur diver who wants a memorabilia piece, I could understand that, but as a hired diver to an assignment that is quite important, to go out and steal is pretty shit thing to do, you're supposed to be recovering bodies and helping salvage the ship, not make money off a tragedy you're already being paid to help understand and help with closure.

Tbh it wasnt just the Captain that was at fault and most of the crew should have gone to prison because many of them fully knew what was happening. The was no reason to follow the captains orders when lives were at risk.

I heard that the captain was busy navigating his 'ship' thru Moldovan waters when the accident occurred. To the families of the unfortunate passengers who perished, my deepest condolences. And may you all find peace, closure, and healing..
Very informative, thank you. I hadnt understood til now how so many people could perish so close to shore, which makes it all the more tragic. Just one point to the "mandatory evacuation drill": I just returned from a cruise. Post Covid one wasnt required to group together, we watched a video on TV in our cabins and had to check in at a muster station: honestly I think that in an emergency 90% of passengers would have no idea what to do.

My friend was a rescue diver and worked on the recovery of bodies and stayed to see the ship raised. The captain should be in prison for life, he was totally at fault. Interesting video 2x👍

The sinking was one thing, but the Captain's extreme cowardice and lying to save his own arse is thrle most unforgivable part.

Omg this crew didn't care about the people on board that ship . How can these idiots send passengers back to their rooms knowing the ship is half way on it's side , that's not showing they care about human life . Now I can imagine the aftermath lawsuit from the passengers . All parties involved with that ship's insurance companies had to go broke , bankrupt , no money . And I say that's all the fault of the captain who deserves to be in prison and some of the crew members .
My memory is there was one, maybe two who worked to save lives. The captain was long gone. Did he take his Moldova friend ashore with him? Did he leave her behind like the rest of the passengers?

I've never been on a cruise and never had a desire to. To put it a nice way it seems like it's for people that like to eat. Or hook up depending on the cruise. No thanks.

I just watched a video about this comprised largely of recordings made by passengers. I had no idea. Accidents happen, but this fool spent hours talking about a problem with the generator and delaying an effective evacuation. When they did finally get serious the deck was packed shoulder to shoulder and was almost 90 degrees relative to the water. It was pretty fearsome. Sixteen years was not near enough.
