The people of that island don't get enough recognition. They came out in the middle of the night and took complete strangers into their homes to give them a place to sleep, food, etc. Much respect to them.

Mario Pellegrini, the deputy mayor of Giglio, IS a real angel ! We hardly realized the courage he had to climb that wreck using a rope, and save those 10 people in such an horrible situation. What a glorious example ! Thank you.
Quel exemple magnifique ! Merci.

The Mayor is an angel/hero. The captain should have done his job and stayed and assist instead of running away and saving himself. He should have been the last one to leave the ship. None of his crew assisted the passengers? The passengers and Italian Mayor had to saved the passengers Everyone could have been saved if captain acted fast enough when he called maritime for help the first time, instead he said, ship has no power. He should have thought about all the 4,000 passengers especially the kids and the elderly.
      What was he thinking?
What a coward. 16 years for 32 deaths and he appealed? Ridiculous! Luckily, he didn't get life sentence. I don't understand why he went off-course especially when there's a lot of passengers and that's his first route. He should have stayed with regular route! He killed so many people when it could have been prevented!!! May their souls RIP and condolences to the deceased family.

What an amazing community the inhabitants of this island make. They pulled together to help the passengers when they needed help the most, unlike that so called captain. The deputy mayor was a true hero that night. He put his own life at risk to save the lives of people he didn't even know. Meanwhile, the person whose responsibility it was to co-ordinate the rescue effort and make sure his passengers were all saved only thought about himself. The engineering team were also fantastic, what great work they all did. Additionally, I hope that the survivors made a full recovery, especially psychologically.

This was shortly after the incident all over the news that he had refused the help of the Italian Coast Guard when called back. He was downright lying when he said "it is just a black out", he KNEW that the ship was doomed. And he was again when called by the CG commander/harbour master from Livorno, that he was heading back to the ship "organizing the rescue" and instead heading for land to save his own little dick. He should spend the rest of his life in jail, and I hope he doesn't even get to command a rubber dingy when ever he is finally going to be released...

Captain bailed out and saved his own but. He even lied to the coast guard which could have saved lives potentially. He risked thousands of people to give 50 strangers a light show and instead crashed his ship of thousands on the shore of for those strangers as he escaped and hid among them. If I am blessed on a another cruise at least I know that I am kind of on my own and to make my own escape plans. Imagine all the things found during salvage.

This was a great documentary on this accident. Also out there is a two hour video of the whole ship being lifted and towed away. Also videos out there of a guy being allowed to walk throughout the ship after it’s finally docked before it’s dismantled. Very fascinating. RIP to all those souls that lost their lives that night.

Okay. So some info which was missed out in this documentary.
1- The fly-by salute was very commonplace, and had been done several times before. In fact, there was a previous captain on the island, who came up with it, and who they were actively communicating with to decide upon safe distances, etc. So in theory, it was fairly safe.
2- Pretty much the whole bridge was at fault. They were heading way too fast, weren't bothering to relay coordinates (so basically had no idea where they were), and actually had guests. The captain's mistress was on deck apparently. They also broke out in an argument, and overall weren't behaving very professionally prior to the accident.
3- The helmsman: he was Indonesian, and didn't speak English or Italian (or at least very poorly). This was more or less his first time at the helm of a ship, and his previous profession was a painter. So not only did he fail to understand many of the commands given, simply because of the language barrier, but he didn't even have the experience to know what to do. Several simulations have proven that they would have missed the rocks, or at least had a survivable collision, were it not for the communication difficulties. Yes, he was hired to cut costs. Whilst he was found guilty, he fled to Indonesia and never actually carried out his sentence.

Your comment ironically relates to a related tragedy, referred to as the "Quiberon Bay mid-air collision". This happened after a commercial pilot deviated from his flight plan to give his passengers a view of a famous ocean liner, the SS Norway (previously the SS France, at the time the largest ship ever built in France). He began descending and turning. Meanwhile, a private aircraft took off from a nearby field and also decided to take a look at the nearby ocean liner. Their paths met, unfortunately.

He had ample opportunity and plenty of time to order an immediate evacuation using the life rafts and call the coastguard to immediately assist. Heck he probably could have gotten on the local radio and pleaded for anyone with a boat to come and help. I don’t understand why he not only delayed but actually lied to the coastguard after relatives of the passengers contacted them.
This didn’t have to be a tragedy. Even if he’d done the bare minimum of immediately calling the coastguard and ordering an evacuation as soon as he understood the ship was a goner before bailing, everyone would have very likely survived.

People had to have seen signs. I haven't seen the ending yet, but I definitely think something is buried here. Like residential school abuse. These people are known as risky by those working with them. 16 years in prison. I really hope this leads to systemic investigations and changes so no other captain will take his boat on a joy ride while drunk. That wasn’t mentioned, but I explained why he ducked of sight for fear of a sobriety check. I hope maritime law prevents him from commanding anything other than a kayak, with safety bumpers surrounding his new assignment. A LOT more details could have been summarized at the doc's conclusion.

@@thibaud_benjamin_vandenhovenI’m glad you mentioned that. It really brought out the best and worst of humanity that night. The captain and senior officers that lied to the coastguard and didn’t order an evacuation, to the bravery of the deputy mayor and the unsung heroes who saved lives that night.

une négligence inadmissible pour un paquebot aussi prestigieux.
heureusement que l'aiguille rocheuse avait bloqué le navire accroché au sommet du récif.
un travail de remise à flot, vraiment gigantesque à l'image de ce joyau des mers

When you deliberately lie about the situation and then leave without ensuring the passengers were vacated safely, that's premeditated. He knew the severity and he was responsible for those lives yet he chose to leave them to die. The value of life means nothing to him, he only asked "how many?". That's more than manslaughter. Disgusting that he got away with mass murder.

Interior passengers and others below decks were no doubt surprised in pitch blackness when it became increasingly hard to walk or even stand when the ship began listing. They may have headed the wrong way and then been trapped by the water rushing in. Many people's first reaction may have been to try to get to their cabins which, if on the starboard side, would have been a death sentence. Had they known how close the shore was they could have gone up to the top deck, worked their way starboard, and swam 20 meters to shore. They were so close the stacks were almost overhanging the land. There was precious little communication. People were trying to escape down the port side which was too high up also.
