I very often see people gutting locks without using a shim. After issues in the past I learnt my lesson the hard way and use core shims all the time when gutting a lock. Interesting idea and possibly a good idea on those locks where a commercial shim is really tight, these may just slip in easier.
I have done this "trick" many times. Sometimes when I was rekeying locks at the hardware store I would have to shim them from the back because someone missed up keying them. Works well, how ever as you noted they aren't as strong as a normal shim.
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to demonstrate this technique. What is the name of the digital caliper you have? It's so compact. I haven't seen one like it until this video. Now I want one. :-)
Truthfully I forget the exact name of it but if you go on eBay and search for digital caliper you should be able to find it. That is where I bought mine
what do you do if it gets jammed in between pins while trying to remove the central chamber? The central chamber is sticking out a bit but can't be pushed back into place
I always keep a few of those "anti theft" / "theft alarm RFID tags" in my pinning kits for those "emergencies" where I need a thinner shim (remove first if carrying your pinning kit into / out of store, ha, ha)
Curious that the commercial shim mic’d out to 14 thou. That must have been the curve offsetting your micrometer because I don’t think they would be that thick. I would have thought they’d be less than half that thick.
That’s awesome I thought I was the only one that did this 😂🤣😂👍. You can find these on a bunch of items you used to see a ton more yrs ago but still see quite a few on different things. Such as CD’s/ DVD’s, most items that come in the hard clear plastic, quite a few things if you buy stuff at Office Max or Office Depot & a lot of electronics still or should say accessory’s for electronics
Ever since i was a kid I had always taken those security things apart and played with the little metal pieces inside before throwing them away. Then i got into lockpicking recently and for the first time, about a week ago, i needed a shim. of course since im so new to locksports i didn't have any on hand. but I did remember how similar they looked to the metal security things and basically did what you're showing here. like the old saying goes 'good brains think the same thinks' 🔏🔓
Lol I just talked about this in a video I made a few weeks ago. All I had to do was cut a piece off the bottom and then I was able to pull the shims out with a pair of forceps but I'm sure tweezers would have worked too.
Very Nice and helpful video My friend, i find these to be a bit too thin for many locks but they do work, i have used soda cans for about 4 years before i Got real shims but the soda can worked just fine and still do
@@HelpfulLockPicker thank you for your videos sir. I've learned so much so fast. I've definitely found a new hobby and hopefully a new profession as well. Such an interesting skill😁👍
Thank you for this video. I bought a door with a lock for my new porch and want to redo the lock so that it can be opened with my front door key. I refer to this video: th-cam.com/video/V9qzjHIE6ls/w-d-xo.html I can purchase the pins online but I need to rotate the lock core the way it is shown in this video just because I do not have the original key for my lock: th-cam.com/video/Q5thFHLSAT0/w-d-xo.html Questions - why do people should have core shims at home? Why not use the bump key to open the lock?

Yeah, I agree. Not using a shim is living life on the edge sometimes, lol
I have done this. They are thinner than commercial shims and very delicate, but can be useful for cores that will not take standard shims.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Thank you for this. I haven't used core shims yet, but now I feel confident I could.
Thank you for the kind words! Just remember, using proper shims is the safer and better approach. These do work if you have no other alternative.
Pretty cool, it can get you out of a bind.
Lol
“If you’re ever in a *bind*”
You know you’re a lock nerd when you actually enjoy locksport puns. 😏🤣
Lol, I didn't even realize it at the time XD
HelpfulLockPicker 😂 It’s just in your nature apparently!

Lol, I can now only imagine having one in your EDC kit or something like that. That would be a problem
Why would you do this instead of pushing everything out with a plug follower? Is this basically the same but when in a bind without other tools?
Sometimes the plugs have grooves in them and you can mess up everything. These are an assurance. (T pins can be a real problem)

I think it was due to the curvature as well
Cool! I’ll never throw another away.
I am glad I was able to give these a purpose for you :)
HelpfulLockPicker and I just bought a big batch of shims lol
Cool video 👍🏻
Thanks for checking it out!

HelpfulLockPicker I sent you a message on Reddit. I did my drawing today for my giveaway. I am planning another in a couple weeks.

That is cool how that worked out for you. I prefer real shims but these do get the job done when needed. Thank you for sharing!
What a great idea thanks for sharing it with us 👍
I can't take credit for originally thinking of it but it is a great thing to be able to do :)

@@HelpfulLockPicker they work just fine i think i have only had 3 locks that i could not gut with soda can
Good to know

Hahahahahaha!!! Very cool idea!!!!
I didn't invent this idea but it is a good thing to share. Thanks for checking it out :)

I do not understand but большое Вам спасибо
Lol. New to lock sport and Literally just got my first order of real shims in the mail today 🤦♂️😂😂😂
Don't worry, those are much better to use

i have some of these! cool
These can be hard to use but they do work. Either way, it is a fun exercise to try out :)
these are the tags you have to rip out of dvd cases before you steal them from walmart
These are security tags which are commonly found in DVD cases. I would not recommend you take them without paying :(
