I figured this out myself a couple of months ago but I used a pick to lift the pins instead of a blank key. It looks much easier to use a blank for this task.
Really appreciate the locksmith skills information. Where I am you need to do an apprenticeship to become a locksmith and these sort of skills are largely kept secret from the public.

Yeah, when I learned all I had was the online course lol... it allowed me to bypass a lot of the "apprenticeship", even tho one isn't necessary in my state.
This was something I had to figure out and I bought a ton of supplies to learn out of pocket. I bought a ton of hardware store locks to practice rebuilding.
I made this channel to give those taking courses a visual example of what it's teaching you in text form, but also to allow new Locksmith's to learn this beforehand to get a jump start on the trade and be able to just jump right in!
Anytime I can use a blank I do haha... sometimes a pick is necessary tho!

    When would you use this?

When you get to a rekey and the tenant didn’t leave the old key, old key is lost or the property has multiple same locksets, but all different keys.
In order to rekey the lock, you must have a way to turn the core over.
So, you can use the existing keys if they have them. You can pick each lock over individually which is time consuming or you can shim them.
It’s very common for home owners and renters to buy their locks and install them themselves, so they go to the big box store and buy the same finish/style locks.
However, the keys won’t always match, so when the tenant moves out or the house is sold, the new tenant has the key to the front door, but the rest of the home is mismatched and they do not always get all of the 2-4 keys.
