    Thank you so much for the instructions. I bought a house and seller don't have the keys to the back door. I shim open a dead bolt lock and a door lock following ypur instructions. That saved me from calling a locksmith. I don't have a coreshim, but I cut up an empty Coke can and use it as a shim. Thanks again.

    Found one trick that really helps - before you insert the coreshim, use a flashlight to visually spot the pin. Slowly pull the blank key out until you see a gap between the first pin and the cylinder. Insert your coreshim now and work the key slightly back and forth to get the coreshim in. Once the coreshim is past the first pin, the blank key will not insert all the way in, indicating that the first pin has been shimmed. Start to slowly pull the blank key out until you can get the coreshim to advance to the next pin. As you successfully shim each pin, the key depth will decrease. When you get to the 5th pin, use a small jewelers screwdriver to move the pin, while applying pressure to insert the coreshim past the last pin. The cylinder will start to pop out when you find the right location for the last pin. Turn the cylinder to the left or right side, push the cylinder flush and tape the front so the cylinder doesn't fall out. The lock is now set for rekeying.

    The DVD security tab trick was a life-saver! I didn't expect to have to shim my lock apart, but I didn't have a key for one of the locks I was using. I was able to buy a key blank at the hardware store, but they didn't have a shim. Great tip - thank you!!

    Wow, it works!
    Shimmed open a Yale lock I didn’t have a key for. Had a blank key so I gave it a try.
    At first it doesn’t seem to work, but once you get the hang of it it will go in as the key goes out!
    Thanks for the video!

    I ran out of key blanks so I used a shim and lock pick hook. Works like a charm

      @@HelpfulLockPicker FYI, I got two more Russwins open that I couldn't get before. In both of them, I got the shim all the way to the first pin but it stuck. So I just picked the last pin and it popped open (a sort of hybrid approach). One I didn't have a key blank for but could help the shim along with a pick. It's a tad bit slower, but worked. Thanks again!

    I don’t know if this will help you.but I made my own shims out of a Mt Dew can. A scissors worked real well cutting The aluminum can ,so I could cut to fit what I needed. Chris

    Too much pressure was used on the shim. Use light give and take pressure on the shim and key. Presenter said shim was good for about two locks. I get at least twenty or more locks by using very slight pressure.

    That lock is a defiant brand lock. sold by home depot not sold by kwikset. it only uses a kw1 key the keys are interchangeable.. if they are blank no cuts only.the key depths are different from kwikset to defiant locks. have a nice day.....

    I knew those shims looked so familiar! I've seen people selling them and they always made me think of the security tags. Every time I mentioned how they looked like that though has gotten my comment removed.

    Interesting, if you want to re-key an existing cylinder and get it out, maybe if you have an antique door and wanted to keep the patina, otherwise the labor required would be worth more than the price of just replacing the lock with a new unit.

    using decimals on inches is so weird. metric mm is so much better lol. But I guess it can't be helped if you're in the states.
    Otherwise awesome video, thanks for sharing

    Hi Great Demo. What is the purpose of shimming the lock if you already have access to the back. Is this just so you can gut the lock?

  • @feedmyintellect
    @feedmyintellect 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It Would be very helpful if you showed the next steps.
    Namely how to use a cylinder to take the core apart and then use the pins and some fine files to cut a fresh key for the lock.

      I do have a key cutting video but that would be way too long for this video

    If all the pins are out, still you can put them back or you need to replace the whole lock.

    • @HelpfulLockPicker

      You can take the pins out and replace them, it shouldn't be a problem.

      HelpfulLockPicker : That would be the old classic #81... am joking. That was was very helpful. In screwing it up in this way, I have learned a great deal more about these pins and how the lock functions.

      Some really cheap locks you can but most plugs have a rim around there preventing this attack from the front

    So - in order to shim the lock - you have to have the lock already removed from the door - waste of fucking time shimming it then.

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can only shim the lock from the back as a security measure. To each their own but I would rather have my lock secured.

  • @warlordplisken9605
    @warlordplisken9605 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't understand. I'm picturing this as a door lock. If you have access to the back side, can't you just remove the whole lock from whatever it is in? I mean, is it different than having a girl by the backside? Unless she's bald, she can't escape. Or maybe just put a large punch on the back side, and hit it really hard with a hammer and launch that thing to Spain. I touch of paint will fix up whatever the launch damages.

  • @justabouthadit5872
    @justabouthadit5872 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    And what's the point of this, really? If you take the lock THAT far apart you have already bypassed any and all of the system? Why would anyone need to do this, this is ridiculous.

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be inefficient as a working locksmith to pick every lock for a rekey or decode

    • @thepenultimateninja5797
      @thepenultimateninja5797 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He explained it very clearly in the video, but the point of this tutorial is not to bypass the lock.
      If you disassemble the lock, then you can 'rekey' it to work with a different key.
      Disassembly usually requires the original key, but this video shows how to do it if you don't have the original key.
