Addressing that last PSA, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: video games do NOT cause violence. Violent behavior, more often than not, is caused by an underlying issue that existed before the exposure to video games. While violent video games can sometimes inspire violent behavior, most people are able to separate the digital world from the real one, unless, again, there’s something off with the person’s mentality. It’s unfortunate that there’s still people out there today that don’t recognize this.

Yeah its a good message presented the worst way possible. like yes teach people to do stuff to avoid injury, but your literally teaching kids to hate disabled people and make assumptions of them and give a negative moral judgement to people who have or presumably been through a traumatic incident! You could so easily present how using fireworks could make you lose figures without mocking or looking down and teaching hatred to those who have because "its funny and okay to mock injured people cuse they where stupid" will just end up being the message kids get.
like it remind me how in the movie adaptation of witches' they gave the witches three fingers and people with hand deformities said they had instances of kids after seeing the movie be scared of them thinking they are a witch.

I really like how the first video takes a interesting spin on the concept of predators online, with a literal wolf wearing a sheep mask as he preys on a naive young sheep online by acting like he is a young sheep himself around the same age as his victim. Also, yeah I agree that the four sheep masks hanging on the wall maybe represents how the wolf most have preyed on four or three other young sheep. Like I said I find it interesting especially how the predator and the victims are shown as a wolf and multiple sheep.

11:28 This really hit close to home for me. My dad was setting up a box of fireworks for New Year's a couple years back, and we didn't know how to open it. So Dad thought it would be a good idea to set the whole box on fire. When it inevitably exploded, the initial blast didn't hurt him, but it *did* cause him to stumble back, striking his face on a nearby fence. He was rushed to the hospital by my mom, and to this day you can still see the scars of the stitches in his forehead 😔
Luckily, he's still alive and well. My dad won't go down without a fight, that's for sure! 😅

I distinctly remember seeing a seat belt PSA about a brother and sister who get into a car crash. With how it was shot I thought it was a T.V. movie, until it showed the crash and the aftermath. When the paramedics arrive they announce that there has been only one fatality. The brother frantically asks why she died when she was wearing her seatbelt, only to be told that her death was caused by him not wearing his.
I also remember that the ASPCA would have commercials airing a lot on cartoon channels, I knew a girl from daycare who had to leave the room when they came on otherwise she'd start crying because on occasion the animals looked a lot like her own.

Over the years, I've come to realize something about PSAs. Their success is directly tied to how they engage or treat their audience.
For instance, "Vuurwerk" fails spectacularly by never actual addressing proper firework handling while at the same time mocking victims who, for all they know, weren't playing around.
Similarly, Biggie Bear fails because its a PSA about watching what content your kids see... that hypocritical shows off all the content parents don't want their kids to see.
And with Amok I honestly don't have to explain that this is not a PSA... Its a noxious smokescreen.

    • @Pumpkin_Parker
      @Pumpkin_Parker 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +64

They're so focused on their precious shock value, they forget how to actually connect with their audience 😭 Most of the time, they're the horror equivalent of "how do you do, fellow kids" if not downright inaccurate or insensitive.
And speaking from my own experience, overdramatization and shame do not necessarily mean your audience will be scared - they're gonna stop taking you seriously lol

It depends on what the goal is though. A PSA is essentially a message sent to the public to raise awareness or change behaviour. If their purpose is to prevent people from playing with fireworks ever again, then it's not exactly a fail. By scaring people with the negative impact one can have after playing with fireworks, people watching it would be scared to touch one now. They don't need to show how to handle fireworks properly if their goal is for people to stop playing fireworks.
Though I also don't like how it only seemed like they're mocking the victims.
With Biggie Bear though, obviously their target audience is the parents, not the children. Perhaps it only aired on adult-only channels too for all you know. This PSA was made to raise awareness for parents to watch what their children are watching, that doesn't mean the PSA itself is for children to watch.

Then a second time was when another group set off a flare right near our home and started falling down towards my dad's truck with litres of petrol in the tanks, and so many other times. They always set fireworks off so close to our home that evertime it's near that time of year, instant fear shakes me, I can't relax during new years eve, what if the next time they fire em again it hits our house? I hate how lightly my country takes letting off fireworks in neighbourhood, I believe they should only fireworks at events where there is professionals.

Tetris is t going to tip anyone over the edge, but violent video games DO have a small effect on violence irl. There was one study where kids were assigned to 1 of 2 groups: one to play a more violent video game versus a non-violent one. They then went out to play as a large group. The kids who saw the violent games got into more physical attacks on other kids than those who didn’t.
It isn’t a “cause”, but there are a number of cases showed that violent video games played a role in the subsequent violence.

My 4 story home burnt down in minutes a few years ago due to a “freak electrical fire”.
By the time we smelled something like “an overheating x-box”, the first floor was completely engulfed.
2 weeks before Christmas 30 mins north of Manhattan. I had no shoes on, pajama pants & a hoodie as I grabbed my iPhone to use the kitchen porch exit to call 911 as I walked to the front yard.
By the time I was speaking to the operator- I was in front of the house and- with the operator on the line, the windows of all floors EXPLODED as the roof burst into flames.
Long story short- we own the house and land- so insurance covered the 3 years of living in a rental house.
    But I’ll never forget…
Also, while my brother was able to get my schizophrenic mother out in time, all animals (2 cats, dog, fish) died in the fire.

I remember as a kid there was this one psa about seat belt safety that ill never let go of, i dont remember everything exactly, but it went something like this: there was 3 people in a car, a guy in the backseat behind the drivers seat, his mom in the drivers seat, and the sister in the passenger seat, with the narrator saying: "unlike most people, (i forgot her name) knew her killer, it was her own son. " and then it showed a very graphic scene of the car suddenly stopping and the brother bashing forward into the seat infront of him and then sitting back down with blood all over his face, and then the narrator just says: "he bashed open her skull, and then sat back down again." And the ending scene was the cut off high pitched scream of the sister in horror that slowly faded away to show text saying "please wear your seatbelt" or something like that. Will never recover from that.

We watched that in school! We also had to watch a real video of a man dying right afterwards which has never ever left me. Someone died on a local road and had a GoPro thing on his motorbike helmet and they released the footage to be used to remind people to drive safe. You can just hear the guy gurgling on his own blood and struggling to breathe before he just stops breathing. Worst part is it wasn't even entirely his fault - a car pulled out straight in front of him while he was speeding. It was harrowing anyway but knowing it was real and wasn't just actors made it terrifying because you couldn't just rationalise the horror by thinking "oh, it's just paid actors". I still know people who speed everywhere they go and I always think back to that video because all it takes is one thing to go wrong and you're not only having a crash which can be fatal at 30mph, you're having a crash at, say, 60mph which is MUCH rarer to survive. I remember kids in my year joking about the video afterwards and it made me realise that these PSAs just don't impact some people. This was a real man who died and we are a fairly small town, pretty much everyone knows each other, and these kids were mocking and making fun of how he choked on his blood and strained to breathe with I assume a collapsed lung. Kids are terrifying sometimes.

The meme is a teacher yelling at the front of her class about pomegranates. She sounds absolutely insane, unless you have the important context that she's teaching a class about these types of PSAs. She's yelling to prove that if people want to really spread their message, they shouldn't just yell "Don't Smoke!!" at them, because it makes people curious and they'll just want to try it more.
The "scare" tactics don't work for this reason. They're not actually scaring people, they're just leaving them with questions, but PSAs that show why they're bad while doing it an a way that captures people's attention are a lot better at teaching these things.

The entire PSA is filmed form second person looking at two women’s feet while they wait for the nail paint to dry. While they’re talking, the second woman suddenly goes quiet, her feet go slack, and the first starts screaming her name. You can see she’s trying to shake her awake because her feet start rocking back and forth. Then the PSA comes to an abrupt end. The fireworks ones make me uncomfortable but for different reasons than what was intended. Particularly the one with the guys laughing at the handless guy, the guy at the club who can’t get a date, and the boy band one. I could just be reading to deep into it or mis-interpreting, but all of them have a somewhat ableist undertone to them. It’s almost like it’s saying if you get these disabilities, you’ll be treated like a freak, you won’t have any friends, get laid or get the jobs you want. Not to mention they all work on using the missing fingered and hands basically for shock value. Imagine being a person either born without these appendages or someone who got an an accident involving your fingers getting blown off and you see this ad basically saying your life is nothing but mistery where everyone views you as a freak? I can see how that could be pretty demoralising.
On the other hand, I guess that’s kind of the point. Maybe the filmmakers were trying to convey the long term effects these kinds of injuries can have, not only on how you do certain tasks but also how society May mistreat you because of it. Maybe some other person who lost a finger from fireworks would relate to the way the characters get disadvantaged in every day situations like these, rather than hurt or offended. Maybe seeing these psa’s would make them feel less alone in the way they’re treated for their disability, and feel glad these ads may warn others about the dangers of messing with fireworks so they dont make the same mistakes they made. Which is probably the intended message.
Idk I’m just rambling at this point. And tbh my perspective might not even be that informed since I’m not an amputee myself. I’d rather hear from the perspective of an actual hand/finger amputee. But I guess it’s just some perspectives to think about, y’know?

They also just say "don't mess with fireworks" but they don't talk about safe fireworks, or the correct way to use them. It feels like one of those things your mother would tell you with no actual basis in reality.

Little fire safety tip: if you ever have to ad flamable liquid to something that's hot, do NOT ad it staight from the bottle. If you ad it from the bottle, the liquid will catch fire which will blow up the bottle, shooting fire everywhere. And do NOT ad water to a grease fire. If there is a grease fire, you should put a lid on the pot and turn off the heat. Also test your smoke alarm at LEAST once a month, and change the bateries once a year.

It was so surreal to hear the name of the Kansas City youth ambassadors at 4:17 . I live in Kansas City and i remember being shown their PSAS in school once. The shootout one, while goofy, is (literally) close to home as I live in a moderate to poor area near several dangerous spots. We even had an abandoned house close by to us burn down due to squatters. I remember it happening, but I was really young. I could only see and smell the smoke. Since then they’ve repaired it and I believe the house is finally sold, but Kansas City is full of abandoned buildings that are dangerous to be in, and nobody does anything with them. They just keep building rich neighborhoods only a few blocks away instead of restoring the historical buildings. The redlining is real, and it even affects the rich folks, because no matter how big their houses are some are still pretty close by to some shady spots. Sadly, people tend to care more when the rich get hurt than the poor.

To share a personal story that informed my world view (and my childhood best friend’s as well) :
At 15, back in like the 50s, my father was really skilled with chemistry. But he was also 15. So he decided to make his own fireworks after hours in the chem lab.
The end result is exactly what you’d think it would be.
Half a granite table turned into shrapnel and imbedded itself in his torso, his right hand is gone along with half way up his forearm, and his left hand has a mangled pinky, a half there ring, and scar tissue and more granite binding up his entire hand so he’s fairly reduced to using his thumb and forefinger, and sort of his middle which is curled inward from scar tissue and muscle damage.
But the lesson to be careful in a chem lab (and to not _make_ fireworks, ffs) weren’t the two I took away.
Of course I heeded that. But the first thing I took from his experience was to not run a risk of losing my dominate hand (he lost his right, I’m paranoid about losing my left), and the second thing, the thing my childhood best friend took away as well, was to not judge people who were missing limbs. To not find them “undatable” and to look past any of those physical traits. My father has a hook, yes, one he made himself (engineer) out of stainless steel because he kept using the plastic ones for projects and they weren’t meant to be strong enough to be reliable if you were handling lathes and welding tools. But because I was little, as was my best friend, he often had his hook off (to not hurt us since we were at eye height with the pointy end) so both she and I never saw his missing hand as weird, because little kids just accept things.
And both my childhood best friend and myself have lost friends when they something awful like not wanting to date someone who is missing a limb and we shut that down. Especially when, around here, most people are missing limbs because they served in the military.
I’ve talked to people with all limbs, and for reasons I literally do not understand, they find someone missing a limb to be “gross” or “not capable of being a full person.” It is an instant “press here to make me mad” button. Just because someone is missing a hand, foot, partial leg, partial arm, etc, doesn’t make them _less human_ and the dating stories my father has before he met my mom, were horrific. And it’s really sad that I’ve heard very similar stories from vets.

Apaches was shown in primary schools here in the UK, definitely stuck with me. I remember a lot of the railway safety PSAs growing up, and the Fire Kills PSAs (just double checked, they're called Nightvision or Get Out Alive) were very common on TV and some of the shots are burned into my brain. But the one PSA I remember shot-for-shot, word for word is the THINK PSA (also called 30 for a reason, iirc), it shows a girl dead on the pavement and starts with "If you hit me at 40 miles per hour, there's around an 80% chance I'll die"., then time reverses and all her bones crack back into place, she wakes up on the road and says, "Hit me at 30, and there's around an 80% chance I'll live". I don't find it particularly scary or unnerving, but definitely very memorable and very impactful, I think most people who saw it on TV still remember it.

The whole "You are an ass if you play with fireworks" campaign feels so demonizing towards victims of firework accidents and disabled people overall. Most people who get into those accidents are young, and dont know that what they are doing is stupid, and the PSAs feel like a big shame campaign towards them, even those who were not the cause of said accidents, they cant go back in time and undo the done, so its rather cruel to point a big middle finger towards them. Not to mention the message those PSAs are sending is "people with *insert deformity* are stupid and its their fault", but what if its not caused by fireworks? the whole thing was aired on tv, and if a little kid came across it they would get the idea, that would very effectively plant a seed of intolerance, victim blaming and ableism into their head that would probably stick with them for the rest of their life.

i watched all of the biggie bear psas and i think they add more to the issue than actually addressing the issue. 'biggie bear meets a friend' shows him s^xually assaulting a woman which NO kid should witness, even as a PSA. like, even as an adult I'm still really shocked so I couldn't begin to understand how a kid would feel.
The action man PSA was the most depressing imo, it was heartbreaking watching the reality that veterans go through, ranging from hanging to bleeding out on the battlefield to navigating life in a wheelchair.

So we all know the classic life-alert ad of that old lady saying “I’ve fallen and can’t get up”. But there was one in recent time where it isn’t as charming and funny as the old ones. It can’t really remember it well but I’m sure googling it will yield better results than me describing it.
It’s a bunch of panning shots through a house while you hear someone crying in pain, after some time they cut to an old lady who’s fallen down the stairs crying a lot. And then it cuts to the life alert logo and some text I forgot.
I saw that when I was a lot younger and it scared the absolute shit out of me because I always worried about my grandma as time went on as she got older. I was always worried something would happen to her. Good thing nothing has happened yet. But that ad I will NEVER forget.

Those weren’t meant to instruct on what to do. They’re showing that young children are being taught those lessons or coping methods, as the name and age of a real kid demonstrates after the songs are done, and how that’s not how reality should be for kids. They shouldn’t be taught how to identify a drug overdose or know how to avoid being shot or find ways to cope with hunger in Sesame Street style or at all.

I am quite young and I use this account as a personal account but I understand everything in that first PSA. Throughout my years of playing online multiplayer games, I've seen numerous attempts to get kids to go their house. At first, I thought that it would be the PSA to tell kids not to go up to someone that looks suspicious but as soon as I saw the other sheep, I knew exactly that this was to bait kids into going to their home, doing whatever they want with them. If anyone asks a demand like "Come to my house", then they most likely want full possesion over you and wanting to do whatever the hell they want to do with you. It would've been harder to spot out if they said "Would you like to come to my house?" because is a more calming manor instead of just a straight-up demand. The switch of 17-18 was a sly and clever trick to let the victim know that they aren't too far apart in terms of age. The first PSA gave me deja-vu because of the alarming amount of predators willing to get out people. Stay out of contact from anyone that is asking for a demand after releasing such vital information. Stay safe, kids.

A man stands alone in a park holding a box he shakily opens the box to reveal a broken and cracked set of teeth and a rough ragged tongue. He stares into the box as the camera cuts back and forth between the teeth and the man before suddenly the teeth are inside the man’s mouth with his teeth being in the box.
