- There are many final images, however most aren’t actually unsettling. That being said, there are a select few that harbor very dark backstories. Today, I’ll be covering some unnerving final images much like I did around 11 months ago. I hope you enjoy!

That Robert Landsburg photo at Mount St. Helens isn't the last one he took though. He snapped as many pictures as he could before being overcome by the ash. The recovered photos were published in the January 1981 issue of National Geographic. I still have the issue. The photos get worse and worse. Viewing them in sequence with the understanding that the photographer died moments later is very creepy.
Kind of reminds me of the photographer (or potentially more) having taken a front-and-center snap shot of the Elephant's Foot in Chernobyl, where standing in any close proximity to it to this day is sudden death. Just something about people dying for their art or job that gets at me.
@@Hm-qd9loThat guy actually only just passed away in 2022. The famous picture was taken back in 1996 when the radiation was no longer strong enough to kill you just from a short exposure. His name was Artur Korneyev. He was the deputy director of the shelter object, which is the official name for the "sarcophagus". Having first arrived shortly after the disaster. He was known to just not give a single F about radiation. As a liquidator in the days after the disaster, he was known to simply walk up to chunks of graphite and solid fuel from the core and straight up just kick them out of the way. He probably went inside the wreckage of unit 4 more than anyone else in history. He ventured in many times to take measurements, and Escort journalists around to try and spread awareness of the danger of the old containment falling apart. His efforts were a big part in making the NSC or new safe containment possible
The big arch shaped building they constructed and then slid over the old containment. There isn't a ton of information available about him in his later years. But he was still working there in his 60s in like 2016. Although he had developed some health problems from the sheer amount of radiation he was exposed to. Keep in mind he worked around that place for around 30 years. He was probably in his late 60s/early 70s when he died. But still... THIRTY YEARS of being right there at chernobyl. He was also known for having a dark sense of humor and used to tell journalists as a joke “Soviet radiation, is the best radiation in the world.” pretty badass dude. It's too bad more people don't know his story. The fact that he put his own health at risk fighting for what would eventually become the multi billion dollar NSC probably saved a lot of people from serious health problems down the road. The old sarcophagus was in terrible shape. Being constructed quickly in the very high radiation environment shortly after the accident. It was never intended to be permanent. But with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the funding for upkeep or to replace it just wasn't there. If that thing had collapsed it would have released all manner of contamination and dust and just overall bad shite into the environment. The fact that his photos and work with journalists were so shocking was a big part of making it possible to get the money and multi-national cooperation to prevent that from happening.
One is taken just as it comes out of the volcano. One is taken while it's perhaps a mile or two away. In the last one, it takes up more than four-fifths of the frame. Each picture is progressively more damaged due to heat and ash.
@@Hm-qd9lo Apparently that's inaccurate and it's lost a fair amount of radioactivity, to the point where you could stand next to it for maybe a half hour before getting a lethal radiation dose. Even if that's true I still wouldn't risk it myself.
@@Raptorworld22at 30 seconds you’ll feel nauseous and dizzy, at 2 minutes your cells will start shutting down, and at 5 minutes you’ll be dead. the elephants foot is contained because of how deadly it is, it hasn’t lost much of its radiation.
For some reason, it it’s often overlooked that one of the passengers killed in the Japan Air was Kyu Sakamoto. In 1963 his song Sukiyaki (Ue o Muite Arukō" (上を向いて歩こう, "I Look Up as I Walk") was the first Asian language song to reach the top slot on Billboard. The song retained that honour for 57 years. He was so beloved in Japan that a stamp was issued with his image.
I knew he’d died in a plane crash. Great musician. So tragic.
Interesting! Had no idea. Hadn't thought of that song in a while.
My high school Japanese teacher has use learned and perform it.
I never knew, that’s one of my favourite songs :(
i've never seen these images of b. hollys plane , i wonder if the passengers were aware of the pilots v.f.r. ( visual flight rules ) certification but not instrument rated , then on top of it all the storm that was pounding the area , seems as though any level headed individual would pass on that ride regardless of the advantages , peace t. d.
That's very sad, espec. considering how many more songs he wld have created..Many ppl died that awful day 🙏
To add to the story of Buddy Holly, it was at the Surf Ball that Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens had just finished playing. After the concert, Buddy Holly went to the bus which was iced over and the heating system didn't work. A young Waylon Jennings was on the tour bus and was offered a seat on a charter flight Holly had booked. He declined, as he was also sick with either a cold or a flu. Holly jokingly told him "I hope your bus breaks" to which Jennings fired back "I hope your plane crashes". That last seat on the plane went to Ritchie Valens.
His words haunted him for the rest of Jennings life until his death on Feb 13, 2002......RIP Waylon

I lived in Richland WA when Mt St Helens erupted. I was mowing the lawn and ash came down like snow and covered every surface. It stayed for weeks. To give that some perspective, Richland is 220 miles to the East of Mt St Helens.
Wow!😳
Are you okay? I couldn't imagine even surviving that :(
In Kansas City Missouri there was ash on my late husbands car . And I was in basic training, one lady almost lost her family in it.
You didn’t have mow your lawn all summer. Stop your whining.
We lived on Vancouver Island at the time. My brother had just repainted his prized 1972 Le Mans. By the next morning it had a fine layer of Mount St. Helen's dust stuck in the paint.
the person on the submarine went out proud of his job, and i respect that, he even said that there was no need for despair to his wife, i think, i hope his family is okay, and is still okay to this day.

That final photo of Buddy Holly is also the final image of Ritchie Valens. You can see the top of his head as he was filling in on drums for Carl Bunch who was suffering from frostbite. Holly also played drums during Valens's performance.
3:06 Not really unnerving, but still sad. There was another victim of the Mt St Helens eruption back in 1980. He's a well-known person. His name was Harry R Truman, and he lived in a cabin next to a lake near Mt St Helens. When the volcano erupted, Harry R Truman refused to leave the cabin and evacuate to safety. As for why he didn't want to leave, the log cabin he lived in for 50 years became a sort-of attachment to him, as if the cabin is a part of his life. He also refused to leave the premises because his wife died there just a year prior to the Mt St Helens Eruption.
Rest in peace, Mr Truman. Your stubbornness and defiance shall be remembered for eternity.

The last one was so sad.....she had always been instructed by her father, as a young girl, to stop and stay put if ever she found herself lost in the forest......she followed those instructions to the letter......she stayed in the same spot for some 35 - 40 days fully expecting to be found but as she realized that she was not going to be found and she would not survive her thoughts were about her family and how this was going to be such sad and traumatic incident for them to deal with......in her last days she wrote about the happy memories and the immense love that she had for her family......she spent her last days, as she was starving and dehydrated, writing letters to her family, providing them comfort and love to help them get thru the sadness and loss they would be experiencing once she was discovered eventually......worse than anything, once she was discovered, she had been less than a quarter mile(1,300ft) from the main trail the entire time.....she was the definition of bravery and selflessness.....God bless her and her family
I read somewhere that Gerry didn't know how to use basic navigation tools such as a map and compass. I also read she was a nurse and maybe that's why she made it so long.
It's incredible that Robert Landsburg took that photo (and several more), immediately packing his camera in a backpack and laying on top of it to preserve the images, knowing he would die within seconds. Wow! Minor corrections as I'm a volcano nerd/fan. At 2:05 the "dark cloud" is the mountain being blown apart mixed with pyroclastic material, not "molten ash." Molten means liquified by heat, so ash wouldn't be ash if it's liquid. Much of the cloud will become ash, but not molten.
The word ash is also misleading as
it is not ash at all but pulverized rock made of nano razor sharp rock.
Thanks to both of you, that’s interesting stuff. I’d love to learn more about this, I feel like such a tourist when I say all I know about volcanos comes from Krakatoa and Pompeii. Anywhere you guys could direct me to - so I can learn more?

Yo that music during the mount st Helens newscast was jolly af. The 80s was so out of pocket.
Not really a picture.. But it is the last image that has never faded in my mind.. A image of seeing my mother in a hospital bed at the Osaka International Cancer Institute. I was 9 and it was my last time ever seeing her as she would pass away that night.. She had cervical cancer that spread throughout her body.. I am not sure how aware she was when it comes to that visit since the cancer had spread to her brain and she had dementia due to it.. But.. Yea.. Still have the artwork that I made for her, and gave her that day.. Its funny that I do not recall much about that day with the exception of that visit.. I remember every second of said visit.. Just not the rest of that day..
She did not speak at all.. and I think she probably did not fully recognize who I was, at least not till the last minuet of visiting time, when my brother and I where taking the last moment to look at her from the doorway then leave.. Her eyes kinda lit up as she sat up.. Looked like she was going to say something and I could see tears start to form in her eyes.. When seeing that I had ran to her and hugged her.. Nurses got angry at us for not leaving as we where supposed to have already left at said point.. I am 38 now.. and in 2 months it will be the anniversary of her death.. Have things setup for me to spend a few months in Japan to visit her grave as well as friends and family who are there.. Currently, if its not already obvious yet or not.. Do not live in Japan as I have been living in the USA for some time now so its not exactly easy for me to visit her grave.. Its not a trip I take every year but more like every other year or so...
Sorry I guess I am just kind of rambling in text format at this point about something no one else would care about.. To anyone who for what ever reason is still reading my comment. Please take care of your loved ones as well as the time you spend with them. You really never know how much time you will have with them until you suddenly no longer have said time to spend.. Oh and, please try to be kind to others in general. You never know what kind of time they are having, and they very much might need some kindness thrown their way.
May your mother rest in peace, even if she couldn’t speak or possibly always realize who you were I know her soul did. I hope you can feel the her warmth of love in two months and then on forever.
That's a beautiful message. As a Mother, I can see how your Mothers eyes would swell with tears seeing her Baby. Our children are our entire Soul, the thread of our entire Being. That moment was so special for you Both. Whether you go to her grave or not, she is with you,and always will be. Thank you for sharing that moment with us.Bless you
♥️ (HUGS)♥️
I'm very sorry for the loss of your mother at such a young age. I was 20 when my father died. But I lost him a year or so before his physical passing. He developed dementia as a side effect of chemo therapy and for his last year didn't recognize me. I'm 47 now, but the grief, the feeling of helplessness and the memories of that dark events are still with me today. It's beyond my imagination what you as a child must have gone through. May your wounds heal and thank you for your kind words of advice.
That was a sad story, it is one I can relate to.
I nursed my mother to the end.
She was a brillant artist, her works hang all around the world.
She was a pioneer in her original artform, a published author and an amazing person to know.
Sadly, after a major stroke in 2012, she recovered her mobility but needed a walking frame, but the damage to her brain slowly took her from us.
In the end she dudn't know who I was and thought she was in hospital waiting to go home.
I live with her artworks adorning the walls, like silent ghosts they all capture a moment in times past, her creative soul still lives with me.
Dawn died aged 99 years, 9 months and 9 days, on October the 27th, 2021, the birthday of two of her children, who were born on the same day and month, two years apart.

Buddy Holly crash: The pilot did not yet have his instrument rating, though he had already received most of the training required. Part of the problem with this aircraft was that it had a type of attitude indicator which he was not familiar with. “Modern” attitude indicators which Peterson had trained with display an artificial horizon, with brown representing the ground and blue representing the sky. This airplane had an older-style attitude indicator, which consisted of a white horizon bar on a black background. It was much more difficult to tell exactly which way was up with these old instruments, and in the dark Peterson got disoriented.
Fun Fact: The Death of Buddy Holly is the event know as The Day The Music Died which was sung about in Don McLean's American Pie.
i like to think it's what he's talking about in that weezer song too.
Check out the Eddie Cochran and Marc Bolan connections... it's like a whole creepy curse movie I can't believe no one's made yet

Dying trapped in a submarine is the most terrifying way I can imagine going. It's pitch black, you're drowning and freezing... horrific.
Flight 123: Kyu Sakamoto was on the flight. He was the first Asian artist to have a No. 1 hit in the USA with "Sukiyaki". It was sung in Japanese and sold over 13 million copies. It reached number one in the United States Billboard Hot 100 in June 1963.
Those incident pictures of the Holly crash are some of the most bone chilling ones I’ve ever seen. The pictures don’t contain any gore (both colorized and black and white) but just seeing their limp corpses sprawled on the ground after having been thrown from the wreck is just heartbreaking, especially since it’s the artists I’ve grown to really appreciate and listen to almost every day.
The day the music died
I’ve heard of about half of these. I remember when the Kursk was lost and that would be a horrible way to go. Being stuck at the bottom of the ocean must have been horrific!
I hear you...
The Kursk was such a haunting event that kept spiraling into the worst end for those men.
My uncle served on a US Navy sub and I still remember how quiet he was when that happened.

Thanks for the warning my friend. I am watching this at 1 am 👍
Kinda rude of the uploader not giving a warning
Also, everyone more interested in music stuff should definitely look deeper into Buddy Holly. He pretty much was the first incarnation of Elvis Costello & the Attractions and Rivers Cuomo & Weezer. Despite basically only having a career lasting a few years, he recorded so much material that they released albums of his over a decade after "the day the music died" (which the song American Pie is about too). Incredibly influencial musician that probably left an impact on your favorite musician in one way or another if you listen to anything rock, blues, or country.
There's a neat little monument in the field where his plane went down. Big pair of glasses.
@@anthonymcglinch7503 I think his wife is still alive actually. Dude has an impact close to Chuck Berry and Elvis, but only had a few years of work before the crash.
There’s a conspiracy theory that Whang covered on his channel a while back where allegedly Kurt Cobain faked his death and is actually still alive as Rivers Cuomo of Weezer. I dunno why I even mentioned it other than I think it’s funny for some reason.
Richie Valens was on the plane that crashed with Buddy Holly. Won his seat on a coin toss. Valens remarked “Thats the first time in my life I’ve ever won anything” 😭
@@poindextertunes Didn’t he win it from a coin toss with Waylon Jennings? Just think, in some alternative universe, we’d have seen the evolution of Valens’ career instead of Jennings’.
It’s possible that the cries for help DCLandry reported hearing were bait to lure people off trail, and unfortunately Daylenn went to help before contacting authorities
Fairly sure a submarine isn't unsinkable. Would kinda defeat the objective
this is an informative video and I can tell you did your research. the only thing that kept bugging me was the sound editing. I kept having to turn the volume up and down repeatedly because some parts were so much louder or quieter. equalizing the sound would go a long way! One of Flight 123's deaths was the "Sukiyaki" singer Kyu Sakamoto whose song was the only Japanese song to hit no. 1 in the USA.
I remember standing on my street corner in Portland Oregon watching Mt St Helens erupt... and the Sunday morning we woke up to the wind having shifted our way and everything was coated with a thick layer of ash. what a mess for a long time. Then it rained and our clothes and everything became permanently stained from brown/gray "mud." My white umbrella was permanently stained.
The aircraft that was operated as JAL123 suffered a tail strike on one of its flights prior to the incident and faulty maintenance and stresses on the fuselage eventually led to the in-flight breakup/decompression.
I don't want to speak ill of the dead, but all the accounts I've read or heard regarding Gerry's misadventure on the Appalachian Trail reported that she was a novice to moderate hiker at best and not accustomed to long and/or solo hikes. She was brave and determined, but simply not prepared and operating beyond her level of ability.
She demonstrated immense grace and courage in her final days, as reflected in her journal entries and the written record she left behind. During the greatest and final challenge of her life, rather than fall into despair and self-pity, her instinct and mission was to comfort those she loved most. And though only a small comfort, she died doing what she loved where she loved to be.
Godspeed, Sweet Lady.
Waylon Jennings was supposed to be on the plane with Holly and Bopper. He never quite got over that he gave his seat to his good friend because he was ill.

I heard Richie Valens and my eyes widened. Para bailar la bamba. He was a very talented singer. Rest in peace to every single person who died
Ritchie was 17 when he died. Buddy was 22. It blows my mind that people that young had such an impact on music today. If they had lived, I think Ritchie would have been a huge star and Buddy would have likely gone into production or formed his own record label. Both of them had so much talent. It's a shame they died so young. Rest In Peace.

The very 1st clip about Mt. St. Helens is correct. EXCEPT the photographer was Mr. Johnston. HE took the photo, put his equipment in the backpack & laid on the backpack. The observatory that you see in the photos you provided, where all the people are looking at the Mt. is called the Johnston Ridge Observatory. I've hiked Mt. St. Helens from there.
Not the same person. David Johnston was there from the NGS out of Vancouver. "Vancouver, Vancouver. This is it" was his last words. Correct...there is a Johnston Ridge now. The same ridge he was sitting on.
Love the videos, man. Keep it up!!!
Love the forest temple music for the second story!!
Knowing that we are all going to die depresses the hell out of me. Not sure why I watch these videos
It's a fact of life. Just make the most of every day you have on this planet. Make sure the people you love KNOW you love them.
Best thing I’ve watched and enjoyed for ages thanks 👍
I live right by mount Saint Helens. I always forget I live near a potential death volcano until someone randomly brings it up in a video lmao
Please continue with this content. Thank you for this!

When I lived in Oahu, stationed there with the Army, I frequently hiked the Ko’olau Mountain Range the bisected Oahu. Absolutely beautiful views and the “staircase to heaven” (an access point to an old Navy observation/radar site) connected at the top. It was off limits because: 1. The stairs were stupidly dangerous and more so when wet; and, 2. You had to trespass to get to the site through a neighborhood and frankly they got tired of all the tourists (I don’t blame them). Anyway the trail at the top of the mountain range (about 4-5 thousand feet) was just a narrow dirt trail just big enough for one person to walk. In many places you have to place one foot in front of the other, it’s that narrow. On either side the trail falls away for hundreds of feet through the jungle canopy. I used a walking cane to test the trail as there were holes in the narrow traile that are covered by brush. So it’s quite possible that he stepped in a hole and fell hundreds of feet in the brush below. If he fell and was unable to move then he was in trouble as the wild pigs there attack humans and eat their remains. Not a pleasant thought. It is possible that he got mugged as Oahu is full of criminals. That is why they tell you not to wander and explore non-tourist areas. That is why I carried a 9mm in my backpack. Illegal but I was not going to be taken out by a pig nor a “Hawaiian National” with a grievance. Beautiful hike though. The Pacific surrounds the island and you can see Pearl Harbor on one side and Kaneohe Bay and Kailua Bay on the other. Well worth it but hike with caution and with someone.
Kudos to you for giving credit to other creators - wish more youtubers were that honest and generous
I never knew Holly was heading to Fargo, jeez, more chilling due to the Midwest involved but 200 miles south of me here in ND, good video and thanks for facts
No one wants their last words to be, "Oh sh**!"
Let's go daddy gearisko uploaded
Thank u for giving the measurements and volumes in metric system form. Great vidz 👍
Keep it up! You deserve more than 147K Subs!
I was 6 when it erupted and I remember hearing it on the tv news. I remember walking to school thinking that at any minute something would erupt close to us and what would happen! Now I have to chuckle because we lived in Omaha at the time without a single mountain or real hill within many hundreds of miles!
The last thing im ever gonna do? Probably making some snarky quip to the wrong person. I sure hope this doesn't age poorly...
I’m expecting something equally dumb.
love your content
The ones I had heard before this video: Big Game (rooftop collapsing), The Kursk, JAL 123 flight (photo showing the missing tail vertical horizontal stabilizer missing after a tail strike faulty repair that caused the aircraft to crash on the mountains shortly after takeoff).
It’s terrifying to think you could die at any time.
Glad that you showed Roger Peterson in the RIP as usually its only the three superstars that are mentioned.
Very well put together prog. Sad though but very human. Thank you.
Peterson gets overshadowed, that's for sure. He was only 21. Young. Way too young, just like Buddy and Ritchie.
Thank U for giving measurements and volumes in the metric system. Great vidz 👍
Awesome. Worked perfectly. Thank you.😊
"He was forced to fly in inclement weather"
That guy wasn't "forced" at all. He could've just NOT flown the plane, leading 3 innocent people to danger and death...
What a beautiful thing to write , the submarine guy !
The last thing I do before my final moment: breathe
Gotta love the Forest Temple music from Ocarina of Time. Very creative!
the mccandless photo haunts me. i went down the rabbit hole of his story a couple years ago and it impacts me on the daily.
