    BTO I worked for surprised me one fall. I had chisel plowed with his 4320 Deere he bought new that I put the first ten hours on plowing the afternoon & night it was delivered. He had a early chisel plow, think it was a Graham, more like a field cultivator than today's chisel plows like a Glenco or M&W EarthMaster. It stirred up about a 14-16 ft swath. With no duals on the 4320 it was a load, ran 3rd & 4th gear. Working in 80 acre fields it was a L-O-N-G day. But then I get sent out in this slightly used 2470 with the same chisel plow. I forget what gear I was running in but it was at least 50% faster than the 4320 could pull it. The 2470 had Firestone 28Lx26 tires. Pump had been turned up a little, supposedly making 220 hp. What impressed me most was how comfortable the cab was. In the next few years after running the 2470 I had the opportunity to run a White 4-150 disking up wet drowned out spots in corn fields, only pulling a 14 ft disk, I was running 7-8 mph, lots of turning. With the articulated tractor when you turn the wheel the tractor bends in the middle and you get tosses side to side. At the end of a day I could barely get out of the seat and walk. Then couple years later I worked weekends chisel plowing for my landlord, his 8440 Deere and a 2-shanks too big Glenco Soil-Saver, and the 2nd year about the same size M&W Earth-Master disk-Ripper. I was WAY down in A range with the Glenco, think 3rd & 4th gear. Was a little faster with the EarthMaster. The 8440 had been turned up a little, around 200 hp, had been as high as 220 but it blew up. From an operator's perspective, the CASE was the nicest tractor to run, the White was next, and a fair distance back the Deere.

      Thank you for the great history. The first tractor I ever got to ride in was a 2470. My neighbor bought it new in 1977 with a 7-18 Case 700 plow. It was always impressive to watch.

    The 2870 I drove had the biggest single tires that you could get and fluid in all 4 tires and it would pull anything that you put behind it . My neighbor Jimmy Hargett had one that had duals and it was a Hoss to ! It brings back memories of sometimes 100 +hour weeks, enjoyed the flash back.

    My brother and I bought a 1200 in Marshalltown Iowa and drove it home to Center point...we needed a little more power and Case in Cedar Rapids had a 504 that had been removed and replaced with a Cummins... we bought it and with a little radiator modification made it fit...plenty of power for our needs...

    Liked the video. In the seventies there was a lot of snow in the mid west where these tractors were. Straight blades were affixed to the front of the tractors for plowing snow. The tractors were Crab steered causing the blade to be angled to remove snow. Townships contracted farmers to clear the roads. One big problem was the air breather would freeze up and destroy the engine.

    Fine tractors ! We ran two 2670's and a 2870 in the late 70's through the 80's. The key to low maintenance was service and do not run them too fast to where they would bounce a bit, that was not good for the power shift transmission. Keep 'em steady and they would do very well.

    I worked the 2470 for many years, from early 70th to 1991. It was a fine tractor by then, but for today's standards.. primitive. It needed like 2 hours greasing & maitenance every week for 2 persons full time, hard to get into the motor from above, and many more small issues.
    In all, it was a fine tractor for its time.

  • @wijo6234

    • @marks_sparks1
      @marks_sparks1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Claas Xerion is the only type that uses 4 wheel steer now. It makes for a very compact tractor

    • @RJ1999x
      @RJ1999x 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In reality the 4 wheel steer was a horrible design, it had tons of grease fittings that farmers didn't grease, it had tons of parasitic power loss, they were horrible in mud with a short wheel base, and in the real world crab steering didn't work, and the only steering that would was the coordinated steering.
      The steering modes were really a marketing gimmick. The tractor is a wheel loader running backwards, and it vanished because the articulated tractors were so much better. I had 4 of these. A 2470,2670 2870 and ,4894

    4690 case with duals all around. Just shy of 10k hours. Use for discing corn stubble, working bean ground with a field cultivator and then deep tillage with a 7 shank in line ripper.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very cool. I grew up watching a 4690. It was bought new in 1982 on singles with a Case SC Coulter Chisel. It chopped corn with an NH 1600 pull type with a 4 row corn head. In 1990 it had duals added for pulling a Case IH 4200 soil finisher. It was traded on a Case IH 9250.

    We have had all 3 on our farm, 24 26 and 28. Our 2470 was a yellow one, good tractor for a lot of years, constantly putting front ujoints in it, the crab steer was hard on them. 26 was a great tractor except for constant head trouble on the 504 engine. 28 was the best of them all till grandpa got it too hot discing and seized the engine. All three covered a ton of acres for us till they were wore out.

    • @stevenowen4150
      @stevenowen4150 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lee Johnson, what troubles did you have on the heads with the 504 motor.? I got one in a 90 series and its one of the smoothest quietist gruntiest trouble free motor iv ever had in a tractor. Its in a 2290 and has been dynoed at 180 hp. 2590 are around 220, 230 from memory, so mine is nowhere near being overloaded. Iv never heard of head troubles with them but I guess theres a dud in every batch of everythings.

    • @leejohnson7486
      @leejohnson7486 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 3 head design was notorious for cracking on the higher horsepower models example: 1570 2470 2670 ven 1370. We also have a 2290, good baling tractor. Not much of a puller, I’ve had to put 2 torque plates in it over the years, but if yours is dynoing at 180hp somebody has turned the pump way up. A 2290 is only rated at like 130. 1570 is like 190 and a 1370 is like 170. A 2290 torque plate and rear end isn’t going to hold 180 hp for very many years.

      That’s why if I had to start farming 750 acres or so tomorrow I’d go with a 4490 or 4494. With 3 point, PTO, and 4 wheel steer there’s not a lot I couldn’t accomplish

      It was just fully restored this year. I don’t think it’s afraid to get dirty. It’s just shiny.
