Music by David Wise fame, colour that pops off the screen, and fun easy gameplay make for the most satisfying time. That loading screen on the Switch version needs to be tightened up a bit though, so it’s not all perfect. A sale and a patch later, and it will be. It would have been platformer of the year had it not been for Astro Bot and Prince of Persia, lol. More please.
He was Rare's go-to composer for the past several decades, working on the Donkey Kong Country series, Banjo-Kazooie, Battletoads and more. He even worked on the spiritual successor to Banjo, Yooka-Laylee. Unfortunately, his great music is kind of ruined by the audio glitches, but I have to imagine they'll get that worked out at some point.
Yeah this game stood out to me out of all the games shown at gamescom I think it’s so cool how the gameplay seamlessly switches from 2d to 3d will play it for the first time on my handheld pc looking forward to it

As for the question, to me the choice of Crash Bandicoot is easy. Crash 3 was my first video game and I still enjoy the games in all their variety to this day. My only experience with Donkey Kong Country was Returns on the Wii and motion controls aside, it just didn't do anything for me.
I love the Crash Bandicoot series so much that I have an entire sleeve tattoo featuring Crash. T-Rex? Check. Aku Aku? Probably in there somewhere too. The latest installment, “It’s About Time,” is absolute gold in my book (and Crash totally deserves that golden crown). I spotted a trailer for another new installment and immediately thought, “Oh man, this has got to be Crash’s long-lost twin!” And what do you know? The game’s on the PS Store, and since I’m a platformer fanatic (or maybe a marsupial maniac?), I’ll probably dive into it soon with wild excitement. As the old saying goes (well, one I just made up): “If you love Crash, you never uninstall him!”
I did love DKC back on SNES, so I was curious to see how this one was going to turn out after it was announced. (the 'NIKO' letters being in the same style as the 'KONG' ones definitely read like a DKC tribute game) good to see this one turned out fun, I might have to look for it! QOTD: I'd probably lean more toward DKC I've probably played more of those than Crash, honestly.
Agreed I love teeth grindingly tough Crash 4. By Allah this game is tough, DK is brilliant but just not as diverse and interesting as crash 4. Me personally I prefer Crash 4 but DK is more balanced, whilst crash 4 any tiny mistake it's instant death, kinda like fuck you pay vibes lol. DK is more of the same nothing new or interesting, don't me wrong I differently didn't get bored with my limited playtime with da game. Just nowhere as diverse and interesting like you said my guy.

I love both, but the DKC games, especially 2 and 3, are masters of atmosphere, and their tones can get wistful, melancholy or even downright somber

Sites like that are too focused on reviewing the biggest triple-A games, when most of the interesting stuff is happening on the indie level. I have a hunch that word will spread about this one. It has cult classic written all over it.
Normally I’m not big on copying other games because it feels like a cheap knock-off most of the times. But Nintendo is not doing much with the DKC franchise and this game looks really high quality. Also the price point of 30 bucks? This is amazing!
That's one of the things that indie devs are good at. They'll sometimes pick up the slack when a big company stops supporting certain franchises. I feel like that's the case here. This is made by a developer who definitely grew up loving platformers and these specific franchises. They were able to funnel all that into a loving tribute that is actually better than some of the games that inspired them.
This game looks like it was tailor made for me, I'll definitely get whenever it gets released on Steam. As for the question, I love both franchises, well at least the original Crash trilogy and it's remake, but Donkey Kong has been more consistent after the original SNES trilogy, I loved DK64 back then and the more recent DK games have been some of the best 2D platformers I've ever played, so I guess I'll hand it over to DK for being a bit more consistent than the orange marsupial.
I've had my eye on this game. Nice to hear that it is good. For years I've felt like Crash Bandicoot was more of a 3D successor to Donkey Kong Country than Donkey Kong 64 ever was. As you can tell, I don't like Donkey Kong 64. My answer to the question has to be Donkey Kong Country. Crash Bandicoot is good but DKC has my heart. I grew up a Nintendo girl so DKC is a part of my gamer DNA.

I'm in the 5th world i think? the one after the ice world. So far I'm loving it. IT does copy the living heck out of DKCR and TF but as big fans of those games and someone who just wanted more of that kind of game, I'm more than happy with my purchase. I do wish the game used the 3D perspective inspired by Crash more often though. Alongside this game, I also played Yooka Laylee impossible lair and marsupilami hoobadventure and they're both great gams as well. Well marsu is a bit on the too easy side so i didn't finish it but i loved impossible lair.

Crash Bandicoot. The art style of classic DKC is too hard to read. I like the secrets and exploration aspect of the game, but the crunched CG images just makes unclear platforms and hitboxes that make the games feel consistently unfair. While Retro’s reboot has been great. I still would choose the OG crash trilogy

Yeah I have been playing crash for over 20 years now and the donkey Kong country games are really fun there are about 4 on the snes plus one on the 3ds and tropical freeze on the switch I especially enjoy them as as well as platforming and barrel transporting you have mounts to ride like a rhino, seahorse, frog which add to the game variety
I saw someone playing it early on PS5 and I must confess the audio in the intro cutscene was annoying to me. No dialogue (which is ok), but the only sound used was like separate sounds of emotions like excitement, scare, joy, aggressiveness... cant describe, but all those "noises" were off to me. Personally I rather see that cutscene with just background music and no SE from the characters...

I know there's more dialog, reason I don't know why they choose to make an intro cutscene with "ew, uff, mwa, grr" and no more dialog. For me, the way it is seems really "childish" like someone who tries their microphone for the first time and adds it to the video without any other sound. At least I used to do that when Windows XP came out 😆 and what I'm saying is that cutscene was completely off when immediately after you have stationary images with full dialog.

Then all the aff and Mwa sounds are used as expressions in how the player should read the dialog (since there is no voice acting). Here you have both and I don't think it works in the intro cutscene. When the intro ended and the dialog started, I was admired to have a full voice acting through the dialog, I was expecting something like shantae, cause the intro presented something in that style... I don't know if I'm been clear, kinda hard to explain 😆
The controls and hit detection are off its not bad dont get me wrong its a pretty game but the gameplay needs adjustments the movement of the char is "slidy" and out of place its not a bad game get it at a discount 5.8/10 imho
Crash Banicoot 4 is notoriously hard. I absolutely love that game but I have to clam my frustrations with it's minute attention to detail when platforming omg its hard asf, but the feeling when you complete an obstacle DK can't compare. I love DK on my switch a great game. I give both games a B+. I would put crash 4 S tier but that notorious difficulty is silly but mad good at the same time, Even on normal the game is silly hard. Whilst dk on switch is balanced across the board.
The Switch version was incredibly glitchy, but they put out a patch yesterday, and pretty much all the glitches are fixed from what I've seen. Definitely worth picking up on Switch.

heh ya i watched the stores video's of this and was like "huh.. a dk and crash game.. interesting.. deffently peaked my interest" then ya showed that swimming lvl on this and was like "and rayman by how that swimming looks XD that's major rayman vibes XD"
The game being better than the latest DKC and Crash games is a MIGHTY big statement, but it certainly draws eyeballs - I'm not entirely enamored with the leads design, not "mascot-y" enough for my tastes, doesn't stand-out, but the snake-enemies feel like they walked right out of Don Bluth and I am loving all of them so much. Though I will say, and this has nothing to do with the games design so feel free to skip if that doesn't bother people, it IS a game made by a Russian studio that's apparently "officially" written up for taxation in Cyprus, which is a common method Russian companies use to escape sanctions and so on. Meaning profits from the game will in some way go to taxes in Russia, feeding all of... that. I get there's no ethical consumption under capitalism, but we all have our own limits and this is, unfortunately considering the talents here, one of mine. Not looking to cast judgment on anyone here or turn this into a debate minefield, I'm just saying this is the case and let people do with that information what they want.
Yeah the load time situation is what puts me off some switch games and end up getting the pc version instead while hogwarts legacy was impressive on the switch it had way more loading areas that the pc version just didn’t have and of course lost a lot of the magic because the graphics were not as good
I couldn't disagree more about the controls. Very floaty and just jumping on top of an enemy can be a nightmare. I've died so many times unfairly. This game is also missing a double jump which is more noticeable when some hook to hook jumps seem impossible to make without it. Great looking game but expected way from from the controls Btw im very experienced at platformers and recently got 106% on crash 4
I love having physical copies of games, but when it comes to smaller games made by indie developers, you're really going to miss out on a lot of gems if you don't buy some games digitally.
Interesting, I've not encountered any major performance issues on Switch. I haven't even heard any of these audio skips (I've seen videos showing it, but not experienced it myself). There was a visual glitch with the loading screens, but that seems to have been fixed in the latest patch. I have encountered an annoying bug in one of the levels that gets you stuck in the scenery though, so I've reported it.
i don't know there's just something about nikoderiko that bugs me. it's too generic i think. cell phone graphics and stiff characters. even the gems and items look like they belong in a game with 10 currencies. not saying it won't be a good platformer because i haven't played it...but as a huge DKC fan, i always stop and look when i see this game on the internet and every time it just seems like it's missing something super important. maybe donkey kong idk.
So the Indie game taking inspiration form 20 year old games is nothing new but this one legitimately has me asking, when does the inspiration turn into straight up ripoff? I like the game but HOLY crap does this game get a failing grade when it comes to having any original ideas and it ends up highlighting my problem with these indie platformers. When you listen to a cover band you'll enjoy the show but after a day or two you're not going to remember the cover band, you're going remember the band they were covering.
Can't deny, there are more than a handful of moments that are downright ripping off both the DKC and Crash games. But the game is so darn fun and charming despite that, I can overlook them for sure. If Nintendo and Activision ain't gonna give us any more DKC or Crash games, I'll take them where I can get them.
@@PC2000 I'd much rather indie platformers try to have their own identity than continue to copy 20 year old games. This one of all cases it the one that feels the most like it just took his dad's book report from when he was in highschool and turned that in. It just ends up being lesser DKC and lesser Crash without any real thing to standout that would make anyone remember it over the games it is imitating. On that note DKC is already way overdone as a blueprint for indie games to keep copying over and over, there could very well be another better blueprint waiting to be discovered or invented but we'll never know if we keep getting these "Hey remember DKC??????" games over and over.

DKC has better level design overall, but Crash is more interesting and diverse in play mechanics, off of the shifting camera perspective alone.

For what it's worth, there is dialog outside of the cut scene.

It is now after a patch. It was incredibly buggy on release, but the patch fixed pretty much everything. Runs super smooth now.

heh ya i watched the stores video's of this and was like "huh.. a dk and crash game.. interesting.. deffently peaked my interest" then ya showed that swimming lvl on this and was like "and rayman by how that swimming looks XD that's major rayman vibes XD"

The game being better than the latest DKC and Crash games is a MIGHTY big statement, but it certainly draws eyeballs - I'm not entirely enamored with the leads design, not "mascot-y" enough for my tastes, doesn't stand-out, but the snake-enemies feel like they walked right out of Don Bluth and I am loving all of them so much.
Though I will say, and this has nothing to do with the games design so feel free to skip if that doesn't bother people, it IS a game made by a Russian studio that's apparently "officially" written up for taxation in Cyprus, which is a common method Russian companies use to escape sanctions and so on. Meaning profits from the game will in some way go to taxes in Russia, feeding all of... that. I get there's no ethical consumption under capitalism, but we all have our own limits and this is, unfortunately considering the talents here, one of mine. Not looking to cast judgment on anyone here or turn this into a debate minefield, I'm just saying this is the case and let people do with that information what they want.

What is not a bad thing, since ubisoft hasn't released a new Rayman game in over ten years. (Except for Rayman Mini on apple Arcade)😅
I don't think I want to spend $30 for it, but it's definitely appealing enough that I'll be looking for a discount on it some time. :)
Good game with hideous load times on Switch.
Yeah the load time situation is what puts me off some switch games and end up getting the pc version instead while hogwarts legacy was impressive on the switch it had way more loading areas that the pc version just didn’t have and of course lost a lot of the magic because the graphics were not as good

I couldn't disagree more about the controls. Very floaty and just jumping on top of an enemy can be a nightmare. I've died so many times unfairly. This game is also missing a double jump which is more noticeable when some hook to hook jumps seem impossible to make without it. Great looking game but expected way from from the controls
Btw im very experienced at platformers and recently got 106% on crash 4

I love having physical copies of games, but when it comes to smaller games made by indie developers, you're really going to miss out on a lot of gems if you don't buy some games digitally.

Damn. Plays perfectly on the PlayStation 5 (except for the weird audio issue).
Interesting, I've not encountered any major performance issues on Switch. I haven't even heard any of these audio skips (I've seen videos showing it, but not experienced it myself). There was a visual glitch with the loading screens, but that seems to have been fixed in the latest patch. I have encountered an annoying bug in one of the levels that gets you stuck in the scenery though, so I've reported it.

i don't know there's just something about nikoderiko that bugs me. it's too generic i think. cell phone graphics and stiff characters. even the gems and items look like they belong in a game with 10 currencies. not saying it won't be a good platformer because i haven't played it...but as a huge DKC fan, i always stop and look when i see this game on the internet and every time it just seems like it's missing something super important. maybe donkey kong idk.
So the Indie game taking inspiration form 20 year old games is nothing new but this one legitimately has me asking, when does the inspiration turn into straight up ripoff?
I like the game but HOLY crap does this game get a failing grade when it comes to having any original ideas and it ends up highlighting my problem with these indie platformers.
When you listen to a cover band you'll enjoy the show but after a day or two you're not going to remember the cover band, you're going remember the band they were covering.
Can't deny, there are more than a handful of moments that are downright ripping off both the DKC and Crash games. But the game is so darn fun and charming despite that, I can overlook them for sure. If Nintendo and Activision ain't gonna give us any more DKC or Crash games, I'll take them where I can get them.
@@PC2000 I'd much rather indie platformers try to have their own identity than continue to copy 20 year old games. This one of all cases it the one that feels the most like it just took his dad's book report from when he was in highschool and turned that in. It just ends up being lesser DKC and lesser Crash without any real thing to standout that would make anyone remember it over the games it is imitating.
On that note DKC is already way overdone as a blueprint for indie games to keep copying over and over, there could very well be another better blueprint waiting to be discovered or invented but we'll never know if we keep getting these "Hey remember DKC??????" games over and over.
