Just a week ago I got a "rescue trimmer" given to me because it was running gas out the muffler. (FS 55 K). I got the power head, trimmer head, blower, and edger attachments for free. Not knowing that it probably was just the diaphragm, I bought a Oregon brand complete kit and cleaned the carb and it runs like new. I rarely have to buy any outdoor equipment as it is usually given to me or I see it on the side of the road waiting to go to the landfill. Thanks for the very good info on this problem and the advice on the needle arm setting.

Great insight. Thanks for this video. I had a Hitachi leaf blower that also had a stiff metering diaphragm that would flood very easily. I ordered a new carburetor and came across this video. I was inspired to actually bent the metering lever down slightly. I had nothing to lose since I have a new carb on the way. When I reassembled the old carb, it worked like a champ. Cold starts too. Thanks!

Its always good to sit with a coffee and clean hands in the study and watch you showing what I need to be doing out in the shed when I finish the coffee.... You give the preview and we go out and do the same as you've shown... Excellent videos as always. Thank you.
Just a tip I'd like to share with people. I do this every season and especially with the line trimmer. I remove the exhaust system, burn it in a wood fire until its red and then blow it out and put it back on with a new gasket. The very first step when I have starting and 'bogging' problems and it fixes them every time.

As a general rule any more, I replace the entire carburetor depending on model. I like to replace the primer bulb if it's cloudy as that is important to see if air is also entering the system. These days, 90% of what I fix is fuel related anyways.

Another great video and shows a pretty common issue that I see.
First: I'm not a professional repair guy like "donyboy73" here. However, I do work on a lot of these little machines and have come to MY OWN separate CONCLUSION that the Ethanol Gas they sell today has a lot of BAD REPERCUSSIONS for these little guys parts. I really didn't see a lot of these diaphragms go HARD like this until people started using the Ethanol Gas.
INTERESTING NOTE: I forgot about a 5 gallon can of Ethanol Gas for a couple of years and when I found it I could see two different layers thru the side so without moving it I dipped a rag down and the top layer was just pure water. It had separated and was now on top of some rank gas but this find was an eye opener for sure...Just sharing what I found.
I suggest taking the time to find Ethanol FREE gas and using the MID Grade or even Premium and only mixing up enough for a few months worth. Actually these 2 cycle manufacturers suggest a min of 89oct and Ethanol FREE for the pre-mix for their engine.
    JUST My opinion...

    • @sa3270
      @sa3270 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Maybe that's my problem. I used to take care of my lawn before ethanol gas came along and hardly had any problem. Then I decided to get new equipment and start doing my lawn again, and a year later I'm having trouble with the trimmer.

    Hey Don
    Another great tip.
I had an FS40 last week where the low speed screw was very difficult to adjust and the high speed screw had no adjustment whatsoever. Turned it in nothing, out nothing. The diaphragm was hard too. Instead of rebuilding I replaced the carb. However, the OEM carbs from my local dealer last year were $65 Can, this year, $94. Should I have tried to clean and rebuild?
I haven’t had much luck with carb kits and don’t like to buy Chinese.
    Cheers

I simply do not understand why they don't install bowl top carburetor on 2-engines, they always do those pesky diaphram carburetors. And all you get with that is failed diaphrams due to the ethenal in the gas, which forces us to have to buy kits all the time. That, or do what most people do, buy 15 dollar replacement carburetors off Ebay. When I bought my new Honda trimmer, I made sure to buy a complete carburetor and fuel parts replacement kit. I wanted to have all of it on hand, for when the inevitable happens. Good to see you Don, thanks for making such awesome video's!

Can I put the knife blade on it instead of the grass blade for cutting mulch. This attachment is for cutting brush. Why or why not? Stihl dealer said yes. However, on website says no not approved. Very odd

    • @TheKrayusKorianis
      @TheKrayusKorianis 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The 56 engines use a cable shaft, not a solid steel shaft. You can only use brush blades that whirl out when RPM is applied, not the solid brush blades with no give because repeated shocks will damage the cable drive shaft.

@@appleztooranges Stihl dealer and tech here. If you use a brush blade on it, over time the weight and centrifugal force from the blade will cause the flex shaft to fray and unwind from the clutch drum. I see this at least once a month. It's not an overly expensive fix at my shop, but this can vary by dealer. If you just have a quick job to do, it probably will not destroy the shaft at first, but repeated use most certainly will.

Sometimes it’s the diaphragm gone hard but I could see in this particular machine the glue had let go on the welsh plug. This could cause a few different issues. If the glue jams open the needle then it will flood uncontrollably. If the the glue gets sucked into high speed main jet it will run lean and not rev up.
Also since the glue has come off welsh plug it may leak past and bypass straight into transitional ports. In that case it’s always better to fit another OEM carburettor 👍
    Cheers Donny 🍻

On my brothers Honda GX35 line trimmer it had the opposite effect because it was running lean so maybe not enough fuel was entering the fuel chamber,I don't know.
The metering diaphragm was petrified but it wasn't letting enough fuel enter the fuel chamber in the carburetor, maybe it was actually a bit bulged.
A leaking main jet check valve will also cause flooding & the engine will also bog down as well.
On some carburetors they also have hidden fuel mixture adjustment screws !

It is mostly the OEM manufactures themselves, they put it out for bids ,the most economical manufacturer receives the contract or they meet the price point that the OEM's set out for the part .In my trade the parts supplier has moved from China to another poor country.I wonder why, the price point that the consumer will except and buy.If products were made in a higher price point country consumers would not buy it,The ones that did would take extra care of these products and keep them longer. The companies can't have that. that does't make their world go around .

You're kidding right? How is it so sad when Americans got what they wanted?
When Americans don't care about buying American because it costs $0.50 more, the only other option is to hope for some government "solution", like a bunch of protectionist tariffs, and if you look up the history of protectionist tariffs, that has economic consequences too.
In some countries, people tend to buy local out of a sense of pride or patriotism. In America pride is buying Chinese baseball hats with political parties logos on them and waving Chinese made US flags. Americans love America, they just don't care too much for other Americans.

Hey, Donny, thanks for the tip. I recently replaced the carb on an FS 45 and having a problem adjusting the idle, which you, mention toward the end of this video. When you mentioned the idle adjustment with the mechanical screw, we’re you referring to the large screw in front of the fuel tank which does adjust when throttle cable travel - my problem seems to be that the screw vibrates out of position. Thought that I’d seen one from your videos before on the carb adjustments, but can’t find it now.

How did or do you find the right metering diameter for your model? Say like mine is a black max 25cc?

Thanks for the videos! I have a "weedeater" brand 2 cycle edger that doesn't run unless I pull sparkplug and squirt gas into cylinder, and it only runs till that gas is burned up. Gas was ran dry the last time it was running. I guessing it is a carb issue, any ideas? Thanks for any help you can offer, and yes I have been a subscriber for a couple years.

sounds like a carb issue, it might be easier for you to just replace entire carb

Hi Dony, my machine sat in the sun one day and there was some gas leakage. I checked the diaphram and it seems fine. With this machine a repair kit costs the price of a new machine and China does not make one. I hate to toss this one out but I have checked spark, filters, everything, it sparks like mad and even injecting some fuel I got nothing but a backfire sometimes, no firing at all. Is it possible spark timing can be out? Does the leaking fuel indicate the diaphram is definitely shot because it feels very soft and is not broken. Maybe I should bend the lever down just a tad? HELP :)

Great tip Dony! On foam air filters like that stihl, do you lightly oil them after cleaning or put them in dry? 🇺🇸👍Roger

    Great vid..
I wanted to ask about the Echo GT 3000.. am i correct in saying a perished primer bulb would cause fuell leak out of what i think is some sort of breather...
Or would i be best to replace the whole diaphragm, fuelines etc?
