394 fire breathing cubic inches of Rocket Oldsmobile. About 345 HP and 4 zillion ft.lbs. of torque. What a beautiful example of a 1962 Starfire. My all time favorite sports/luxury car. I drag raced a couple of 1950 Olds' back in the '60's. My Holiday had a 394 in it and was the big surprise for many so called muscle cars.
My Father in law had a 1962 Olds,That car was a 4 dr ht the interiors were drop dead gorgeous!, the chrome lit it up the beautiful tape speedo,Green till 40?, yellow 40/70, 70+ RED... He got lit a lot we went to Kentucky a lot,I got to drive it a LOT,I had it to 100, MANY times like sitting in a rockin chair😊
My Grandfather had one he bought new, when he past my Grandmother gave it to my Dad he drove it to work for years, I loved that car wish I had it today, best looking Oldsmobile
My dad had a 63 Starfire 330 ultra compression motor 4 barrel 4 speed!! It was black on red I fell in love with it at the age of 4!! That 4barel moaned I loved it!!
Oh my god those were beautiful cars! A friend of mine had one back in the early 70's when I was in high school! I Had a black 1960 Olds 88 convertible with a red silver and white interior and white top! It was dechromed, lowered and had fender skirts on it ! He used to outrun me all of the time!
I'm not a big fan of American cars, but I like this one. And that other black one you had. This one needs a paint job and that's basically it. As I mentioned before. Give it a coat of zinc before the primer and she'll last forever. You guys rock.
Those Starfires had some pretty neat interior features. For example, above the glovebox door was a panel with the Starfire script. This was edge lit by the dash lights circuit, so when you turned on the lights at night, the panel would glow and provide your passenger with a luminous advertisement of what car they were riding in!
My younger brother traded his Mo-ped for one exactly like this one back in the early seventies. Cool car. Even same color. They don't make 'em like that anymore. Thanks for the videos.
Our family owned a loaded mint 2 door 63 Oldsmobile Starfire hardtop, shiny black in color, wide white steel stripe trimmed with chrome on each side, red bucket seat interior and stick shift console with tachometer. That was a very kool vehicle in its day, still are a sharp looking vehicle.
"A N D" That darn car was one of the best cars that GM ever made... I cannot remember any other car that could pass it... That sucker was truly a "ROCKET"... Olds could not have named a better name for that automobile...
Best looking Olds ever! My Dad had a ‘62 Starfire. Light metallic blue with marching interior. Buckets, console etc. Fender skirts. However the 394cu inch engine had been replaced with a 455cu.! Beautiful car!
When you see something like this next to modern day motors, you appreciate it much more. Back in a time when cars were cars. Long live Detroit's memory.
I had a 62 Dynamic 88 4 door, no A/C but the engine was killer. Looked rough with the rust at the bottom of the door panels but I won many a stop light challenge with hopped up Novas and such. Good Times!
Back in the day, I had two of these. Hard top and a convertible. This was in Nebraska and both were rusted out pretty bad in the quarter panels. The hard top I bought when I was 17 in 1967. The convertible I bought in 1971. I really did like these old cars and I would squall the tires every chance I got. Good luck on the restore. I'll assume that I am watching this 11 months after it first posted, you have come along nicely.
Great stuff. I'd like a look round that garage. Some nice cars and stuff in there. Make a video on that and involve you're Grandad too. Get him to talk about the cars and history behind them. That would be cool. 👍
Giving that 62 Oldsmobile is worth the restoration n a new transformation n a new paint color like silver as the base coat n a Red pearl Color for the exterior n 14 coats of Crystal clear sealer
What a beautiful car! I love those old ‘60s Starfires! They came from the era when manufacturers made cars with style and performance to draw in buyers. This was a true luxury muscle car, I would love to see you and your dad tackle the restoration of that car
I do love this car 1962 Oldsmobile to please continue to show us some more new videos love Oldsmobile’s and the restoration process my brothers thank you guys so much
That was my older brother‘s first car. I can remember dad asking his mechanic friend to tune the four barrel carburetor on that 394 when dad looked at the tires that were new just a month before and they were bald from my brother who was 16 at the time just frying the tires on that powerful, classy, beautiful muscle car not very well known but what a special car that was.
Just had this video pop up, love the models of the cars back then. They were pretty and classy, unlike the modern autos that are a cross between a panel truck and a cheap vacuum cleaner
I owned a car exactly like this when I got drafted in 1966. It was a beautiful, classy and great running vehicle. As luck would have it, my little brother totaled it when I was in Vietnam. I still miss that wonderful piece of art.
I am just getting caught up on your earlier videos. My grandfather had a 1962 Olds 88 and I have fond memories of sitting on his lap and steering his car when I was 4 or 5 years old. It was cool to see you bring the Starfire back to life and see your whole family involved. Your grandparents were certainly cool to have so many cars and garages on their property. Thanks for the tip about the reverse thread lug nuts. I didn't know about this and would have probably struggled with it. I have always thought it would be neat to restore a 1962 Olds in remembrance of my grandfather. Thanks for the enjoyable videos!
You Dad is cool as hell. Quiet.. knows everything but stands back and watches. My Pop is the same way. Get's right in there when there is dirty stuff to do..
These are really nice cars and packed a powerful punch. Oldsmobile rocket v8 is nothing to mess with. Old cars are much more beautiful than the new stuff. Back when we built dreams and didn't destroy them
I remember back when that slab-sided 62 style came out, I was just a kid but I thought they were nice looking cars. GM abandoned Oldsmo and Pontiac fins like they were diseased, and shoved all that fin into 1960 Buicks and Caddys and turned them sideways on Chevys. As the 60's wore on Oldsmos got a little more piggish every year. Killer condition on that car, remarkable.
It always seemed to me with the 1959 models, the the more the car cost the more upright the fins were. The Chevy had horizontal fins. The Buick had diagonal fins and the Cadillac had the most upright.
Back in the 90's I picked up a 62 Oldsmobile Super 88 with a 394 Skyrocket in it, man that car flew! Raced a Camaro once, chirped the tires in all the gears and blew his doors off at 4 different traffic lights!
uncle's got some fun cars...the starfire of course, but looks like a '62 XL, and a bulletbird. despite the leaky brakes, looks like y'all had a good gettogether with the family...have an excuse to do it again when another m/c is located. thx for the fun side trip from the usual content!
The ‘62 T-bird is my Uncles and the ‘62 XL 406 Tripower 4 speed is my grandfathers 😉 All the others old cars there.....are ours 😅 It was definitely nice to see everyone, it’s been a minute! Glad you enjoyed!
Yep, I have the spring tool too. One day I was too lazy to get up off the ground to get it and used the 'vise grip and screw driver' method. Screw driver slipped and hit me in my forehead. It takes more than one roll of paper towels to stop the bleeding. Still have the dent in my head. That was the last time I did drum brakes.
That ol Starfire had some nice torque. A guy had it parked at stop n go back in the day and we’re looking at it, he says come here I want to show you something. So he’s starting it up, starts given er gas and he goes look at the body shift up and down. And that’s how I learned something about torque.
Not a GM fan by any means BUT this car is classic American! Good luck with sourcing the parts you need. I hope it runs proudly! I morn the loss of the classic Detroit.
I have a 64' Olds Jetstar 1 with the 394 and "hydromatic" trans. Has 74,000 original miles. Engine has 20,000 on a rebuild. Nice old cars they love to cruise. I'm looking for a frame unfortunately, years of sitting in an apple barn (from previous owner) up here in NH has taken its toll. Got to run it for a solid 2 years before I decided to park it. One day
Hey Budget Buildz guys, I watched the starfire video and as another 62 Starfire owner would like to help you get yours on the road . You mentioned that you are in need of a master cylinder. I have a brand new never installed Master cylinder and power booster that will fit your Starfire . I ordered it and never installed it because I decided to buy a complete dics brake kit and the original Master cylinder seller would not take my return . You can get it CHEAP ! LET ME KNOW , MARK Z
I love this car...a good freind of mine own a 1963 start fire with a 355 rocket in it...I helped him put a new starter on it and new back wheel cylinders on it about 6 years ago...
The '61Starfire had a bit more stylish body, but was convertible only (which I've always thought odd). Not a big fan of ragtops, so the '62 is the next best thing. Seems a LOT of great sleeper cars were from '62 - the Starfire (with the 394 c.u./345 hp), the '62 Mercury Comet (with only the second version of the long-lived Windsor engine family, the 260 V8), the '62 Buick Skylark which is one of my favorite's (with the very cool 215 c.u. aluminum V8), the '62 Ford Falcon Futura, with the body style that you either loved or hated (unfortunately, no V8 in in a Falcon till '63, so by all means, thrash that 170 c.i. I6), and the '62 Chevy II Nova (no V8 till '64). Love all those cars for '62!!
A nice midsized sedan. Will look good with a full restoration and a Continental tire kit. Not as long as my dad's 59 olds 98 Convertible, Rocket 394 with Continental kit, or his '63 Cadillac Fleetwood hardtop, but a nice two door car.
1962 must have been about the last year GM used a generator. They were such a pain. Glad you've rescued this one. Looks like a great candidate for restoration.
Hi Michael, I just wanted to thank you for your great videos, they are improving all the time. Kind regards FromMarcus in Pringle Bay in sunny South Africa. Keep it up my friend.
I sure did like the looks of that 61 thru 63 T-bird that was sitting next to the starfire. my favorite T-bird body style next to the baby birds. the Starfire is right styling as well. it will look great restored.
Wow a '62 with factory power windows, air conditioning, buckets/console! That is a very rare bird indeed!!! There are plenty of shops that will rebuild your master cylinder when there's no parts available. You'll just need to remove it from the car and ship it to them.
Most people are not aware that Oldsmobile was the most powerful car that GM put out … it was even stronger than a Caddy … When Caddy started using Fuel Injection on the early Sevilles … this was the first Fueli and when Caddy started converting gas engines to Diesel , again this was the only engine that could handle the intense extra pressure of a Diesel engine … When no one had a 3 speed automatic tranny …. Oldsmobile had one …. You could lose your brake and be able to stop 🛑 an Olds …. Just throw that baby into reverse at 30 miles an hour . Believe me , it would stop … No doubt that Oldsmobile was the best that GM ever made ! I know , I worked and was trained by GM for years …
My dad had a 62 Olds 98. Not the Starfire. Starfire was a step up from the 98. He went from 57 Chevy to his first Olds 98 (59).He traded up ever couple years. Always an Olds 98. This was my favorite years of all his 98s

That interior is like a time capsule. It looks phenomenal.
Hello, I am a 63-year-old retired doctor. The car of my childhood. I am very happy with his work. Come easy. Greetings to you all from Turkey Izmir.
Those were good cars but they were crippled by the lousy Roto Hydramatics. A four spped would have been a great addition.
Had one of these back in the 70s with V8, 2V, 3 on the tree. Used to outrun mach1s and the like all the time. Nice to see it again.
One of the few guys who clean the top of the engine before attempt to run. GOOD JOB! :)
First thing I would want to do is protect the bare metal if its leaving that uber dry environment...
That model of Oldsmobile was probably the best looking car ever produced out of Detroit
Agreed. ‘57 chevys are overrated.
@Leopoldo Burgoa Your a jerk!.

I modified my 1964 Olds 98 panel with a backlight to do a similar thing.
One of my favorites. I walked by a new one of these every day when i was going to junior high school. It was red like this one. Memories
My younger brother traded his Mo-ped for one exactly like this one back in the early seventies. Cool car. Even same color. They don't make 'em like that anymore. Thanks for the videos.

Back when American cars were as beautiful inside as they were on the outside...

Why you would take that outside in the damp weather when it was as dry as could be in the garage?
Well worth restoring. Even if you have to do a disk conversion. Very nice well optioned car.
My favorite Olds , my parents had a 62 Oldsmobile Super 88 and I loved it
I had one too, it could get up and go
When I was in 6 grade I remember a teacher who bought one new in 1961. This is a really cool car.
I had a 62 Dynamic 88 4 door, no A/C but the engine was killer. Looked rough with the rust at the bottom of the door panels but I won many a stop light challenge with hopped up Novas and such. Good Times!

I had a 62 olds starfire beautiful car wish I kept it
Can't wait for Part 2. I used to race a 1964 Jetstar back in the mid 60's. Love the 394 Engine!
Great stuff. I'd like a look round that garage. Some nice cars and stuff in there. Make a video on that and involve you're Grandad too. Get him to talk about the cars and history behind them. That would be cool. 👍

Too bad they started to randomly take the paint of....for whatever reason. Would have been a great surviver otherwise
Get that car in a garage STAT! Don't let that good metal go to rusting!!! O.O
That interior is a work of art, what a fabulous project to get stuck into.
What a beautiful car! I love those old ‘60s Starfires! They came from the era when manufacturers made cars with style and performance to draw in buyers. This was a true luxury muscle car, I would love to see you and your dad tackle the restoration of that car
I think the 62 Starfire was the most beautiful Olds ever made.
Old school cool for ya! Jumps right back to life! Little grumpy but will come around.
Thank you. Extemely nice Oldsmobile.

The Olds is nice but I have a special place in my heart for the '62 Galaxie. My first car.

Whoopee! A Starfleet. Hadn't seen one in years! Great video!
Starfleet was a Star Trek term.
Great job guys. I've changed many a drum brake in bygone days. I think I still have the spring tool. You guys rock - thanks for bringing us along.

One of those rare gems, you won't find many in that condition out there.

That white T-Bird in the middle there is so nice looking. 👍👍👍

Still got that?
Love the Thunderbird that's also in the garage!
I think it's a '62 Galaxie.
Another great find! I love the original color!
Yall need to do vids with vicegrip garage that would make for some awesome content
Wow and a Galaxie 500 My grandmother had hers was baby blue but this was such a great episode with memories of my past
Starfire, very cool and wow on the great condition! Gonna really enjoy watching this project.
Gorgeous car!
I love that car
That is a beautiful car. One of the prettiest Olds made.
I have to say you guys in the States really knew how to design cars back then. Regards from London
That exhaust sounds great!
Some drum brakes are 2 or more person that agree 100% and lots fun to do also had my share over years too!
I love that Rambler too...such a nice car
That is one beautiful car. I remember when they came out. Loved them too.
I love this car...a good freind of mine own a 1963 start fire with a 355 rocket in it...I helped him put a new starter on it and new back wheel cylinders on it about 6 years ago...

I really enjoyed this video I have done all this when I bought sold cars I would love to see more of it please mate
Phil in the UK
I want to see more of this car and a peak at the T-Bird. She is a beauty.
The taillights remind me of the C5 vette's taillights haha. Sounded like you were making popcorn when you were airing that one tire up lol!
15:26 SHE'S ALIVEEEEEEE!!!!! 💪🤙
Com'on man at least give a spoiler alert....
Boy you're digging out some good rides my friend. Love the work Micheal. Fantastic video as always and much love from Pickens buddy. 😀👍
Why after multiple references to the state of preservation due to the dryness would you take it out in in the rain with bare metal?
My thoughts exactly ☹️
Between the Rocket 88 and the 442, this was the performance Olds to have.
A nice midsized sedan.
Will look good with a full restoration and a Continental tire kit. Not as long as my dad's 59 olds 98 Convertible, Rocket 394 with Continental kit, or his '63 Cadillac Fleetwood hardtop, but a nice two door car.
Very cool, always liked that body style!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Sounds wicked, love to see it completed
Wow great job! Glad to see you guys getting another one out on the road👍😎
grand father had a 62 holiday coup 394 two barrel, largest venturi i ever seen
1962 must have been about the last year GM used a generator. They were such a pain. Glad you've rescued this one. Looks like a great candidate for restoration.
I had a '63 Starfire. It was a great car. Smooth and powerful.
