    Am I the only one who is kind of likes being sick and having a really deep voice? I have a fairly deep voice without T, but when I'm sick it goes REALLY deep and it makes me irrationally happy.

      I have deliberately thrown out my voice a couple of times. I don't do that often because it physically hurts, but it feels good to talk without worrying. I know what my voice sounds like outside my skull, and it makes me cringe. Ironically, that's part of why I haven't trained my voice at all, just because that would mean listening to it so much ... although I could learn a lower register that way and fix the problem. Stupid dysphoria.

      Lol me too. I tried screaming really loud so I'd lose my voice.

    • @cas_ass
      @cas_ass 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, singing really loudly along to music makes it so you wear your vocal cords down and your voice gets raspy and deeper. I started doing it over a year ago to help me feel more comfortable with my voice, and it's fun- especially when you can't hear your singing voice cause your music is too loud.

      Even though I'm on T, I still enjoy having the deeper voice while I have a cold or after I wear my voice out.

    I had my name legally changed before I started hormones, and boy oh boy was it embarrassing to get up in front of the judge and have to speak and literally not even pass at all. I was such a mess, but it was worth it to have my name changed. I used my name change as a way to come out at work as trans, which ended up working well.

  • @AscheDjidoi
    @AscheDjidoi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I have selective mutism (i.e. I don't talk, and I do not feel compelled to speak like 90% of the time), so speaking wasn't really comfortable anyway. But after being on T for a while, I've noticed that I feel a little more comfortable in my voice when I *do* speak. So that's something.

    I wish I could donate my voice to a pre-T trans guy and switch with him. I'm non-binary and afab, but my voice is so masculine that it makes me pass as male. That plus the fact that I look like a young cis boy after only cutting my hair, and I'm a million miles away from even raising questions about my gender when I'm literally ASSIGNED FEMALE. All I want is an androgynous voice and androgynous face and the ability to act in both typically masculine and feminine ways without that immediately making people think "boy" or "girl".

    I'm 14 and going into high school in August, and I'm thinking of coming out this summer and asking people to use a new name/pronouns at school. I'm really scared, but the good thing is that some of the cis guys in my school still have their pre-puberty voices, so I can sort of fit in until I get on T. My parents probably won't let me go on T until I'm at least 16 (I haven't come out yet) so I think I can do it. I don't pass well at all right now though, I have wide hips and I'm pretty chubby which doesn't help at all.

      But I live literally 10 minutes away from San Francisco so it's a pretty liberal area and people will be more respectful than if I lived in Texas or something.

      last year i came out at the start of the year because the transition for everyone seemed to be easier. because they hadn't talked to me for three months so switching wouldnt be so hard, especially when youre going to a new school and if they dont know you by your birthname they cant mess it up (pronouns idk tho it depends because people suck) but i hope all turned out well!

  • @MickeyiAla

    [as of 6-29-16] my birthname is very feminine. when I got my job at McDonald's last December I asked to be called Kirstofr despite not have yet changed it and before I was on T. On the official computer system it's my birthname but I have been only misnamed twice surprisingly! I have been on T since March and have gradually gotten deeper. Customers have been using my correct pronouns but not much my coworkers, even tho my name IS Kristofr. Coworkers just call me Kris and at this point it's to awkward to correct them lol. Maybe 3 coworkers use the right pronouns.
    A little funny story that happened recently. I was working front counter and I took this older gentlemen's order. When I gave him his order he said "thank you sir!" at me. My (younger hs boy) coworker was like "wtf he called u sir??? I would've smacked him if he did that with me but opposite!!" In my head I was thinking "I should smack you then" lmao. I have been feeling shy about correcting people since I don't pass so much

    I am so glad you made this video. Sometimes I get called she/her pronouns used. I'm on testosterone and I have a beard and mustache and I don't understand. My voice isn't feminine but it isn't really deep either. I don't have like the junk growth either. Maybe my T doesn't work? :'(

    THANK YOU SO MUCH for covering this topic. Voice dysphoria is like #2 on my list honestly. Also Saren has a great video on how to lower your voice without t. Its not as drastic of a change as with t, of course, but it made a big difference in my confidence on a day to day basis.

  • @TomWeiSweden

    Thank you Chase for mentioning us transguys who still have a fairly high voice on T! I feel like we are Always forgotten. I'm 29 months on T and sometimes still don't pass because of my voice. But I've been seeing a speech therapist for 3 months now and that has really helped with my voice dysphoria. I'm sure there a different ways to go about it, but for me the speech therapy has been about Learning to speak and breath with my stomach instead of my throat, using more force and Power in my speaking and also speaking in a deeper voice in a natural way. This has boosted my confidence a lot!

    im not on T and my voice is low because it's the voice that fits most with me, in the period I didn't know I was trans I practiced to get it lower and now its naturally low and low enough to pass, I can still get higher or lower than this if needed in the conversation, but I barely pay any attention to my voice, only when I accidentally go higher. but my tip; don't try to sound like a man, try to sound as yourself

    I didn't even notice that you sounded or looked any less organized this time at all. This video made sense. I myself sometimes experience excessive focusing on details, but I filter that out. Whoever said you are too hard to follow when you're sick, may have been committing the same error but *not* stopping himself.

    It's pretty amazing how important voice changes are for us compared to a lot of the other changes we hope for also.
    I remember tried doing the whole "deep voice" that was obviously forced and I never was brave enough to hear how I sounded so I'm sure it was ridiculous. For it to even sound a bit deeper/manlier in a natural sense it took about 6 months to a year and I started hormones a few months later.

    I hate my voice but I talk a lot around people who know I'm trans because I feel safe. However when I'm laughing or trying to make others laugh and tell jokes I get high pitched and squeaky and it's the most annoying thing 😩 I've actually been in a position before where people have started out using he and him pronouns but then using she/her pronouns after hearing my voice which is crappy. It would be really great to start t but I don't even know if the gic received my papers or not yet :((

    I was born a girl but since i was in elementary school i've worn male clothes for the most part, i prefer wallets and chains over purses and rings, i was never happy with long hair and quite happy when i got a more masculine short hair cut, i stopped shaving my legs a few years back and now only shave when my mother forces me to when we visit family. I don't quite like having breasts but i dont really mind them. I've been called him/he before and it makes me happy but being called she doesn't make me unhappy either. To be perfectly honest i wouldn't mind having male or female parts because in my mind gender really doesn't matter to my personality. I don't think i have dysphoria other than the fact i really want a six pack? Lol i really dont understand my gender to be perfectly honest.

    • @b.ashley9222
      @b.ashley9222 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Something important to know is that gender exists on a spectrum of masculine to feminine, and strength of identification with those. Everyone is a little different. If you want to hear from people with similar experiences to you I'd recommend looking into the nonbinary community to see what you think.

  • @mayiashyouaquestion
    @mayiashyouaquestion 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    my voice used to be one of my top two things that made me dysphoric, so pre-t i was the same and just didn't talk. i only felt ok talking in my mom's car or in our house. anywhere else and i avoided talking at all costs. even 1+ year on t and i'm still that guy that is "always so quiet" and "doesn't talk much" 🙃
    my voice doesn't make me dysphoric anymore, but my old habits continue to stick with me in some ways.

  • @sleep2483

    If anyone is watching this now, I just want to give a helpful tip on this! Singing. It doesn't matter if you sound good or bad, it's about training your vocal chords. I'm going to use music words now so I'll clarify the meanings real quick.
    Soprano- high range (female)
    Tenor- highest range (male)
    Baritone- middle range (male)
    Bass- lowest range (male)
    So, when I started I was a soprano. All I did was make a playlist of songs I knew really well, ranging from soprano at the top of the list, to bass at the bottom. I sang each song all the way through the playlist until I got to a point where I couldn't go any lower, and eventually I finished the entire thing. *Do not keep singing/talking at a range that hurts your throat or feels like you're straining your voice* just give it time and I promise you'll be able to talk in a lower range naturally.
    I used to be a soprano. Now I can sing soprano to baritone (and a few bass notes) without starting hormones.

    I don't know that there is the word "voice dysphoria" until you said so. I have voice dysphoria too. I really not like to sing in public or with friends and my singing suck because I tried to deepen my voice and I like to sing men's voice songs. Once I heard about T for the first time it was like oh heaven door, I finally I find it. I have to just work my way there. By the way, I am pre everything.

  • @Tamishvara

    I changed my name a couple months back. I don't pass yet, due to a large chest and high voice, but I'm training myself over time. Online, people who just met me tell me I sound like a young male, which made me feel great. It's a start. However, I work in a job that requires me to talk and be friendly, which makes it very hard to speak in a low tone and train myself. I get misgendered all the time... It's very upsetting, but I hope that in time, I'll be able to start my journey!

    There is definitely a point at which deepening your voice sounds fake. Still, I've noticed lately that being nervous around others will make mine "jump" and so I try to imagine that the person in front of me is someone I know and like, and it will naturally go back down.
