It was not about the 60s, it was Mughal period Akbar. And Lataji long ago lost count of how many songs she has sung. 😊 I love your enthusiasm.

    Meaning of this song
Insaan kisee se duniyaa me ek baar mohabbat kartaa hai
(If a person falls in love with someone once in this world)
Is dard ko lekar jiitaa hai, Is dard ko lekar martaa hai

    (We have loved)
Pyaar kiya koi chori nahin ki
(We have just loved and haven't committed a crime)

    Pyaar kiya to darna kya
(Why should we be afraid, if we have loved)
Jab pyaar kiya to darna kya
(Why should we be afraid, when we have loved)
    Chhup naa sakega ishq hamara

You won't understand this song without understanding the words. Words are the soul of this song.About Lata ji, its often said that actresses those times especially requested for Lata ji to sing for them. And yes, she has received India's highest civilan honour- Bharat Ratna by the government of India.

Yes she is madhubala...She was expert in many dance forms and for this specific dance she was coriographed by sitara devi, sitara devi was also wife of the director of this movie K.asif, but later both divorced, sitara devi was also guru of madhubala and trained her in indian classical dance forms, sitara devi died few years back may be 2 years back, indeed she was a legend.

“Parda Nahi jab koi khudda say bandon se parda karna kiya, jab pyaar kiya to darna kya.”
When it’s not hidden from God, then why hide it from people, why should we be afraid if we have loved.
What a beautiful line and the word beautiful should be replaced by madhubala, this woman was perfect, hands down the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen, the Pathan beauty speaks.

Film was black and white but two songs , this one and "jub raat hai aisi" and the climax were originally in color. The whole movie was colorized in 2004 but this song is originally colored.
This film is one of the most expensive one you need to Google search its details.
    Lata is singing since 1940's.
YES it was madhubala's body double as she was not a trained dancer and also was unwell at that time due to the hole in her heart and she died just a couple of years after this film's release.
Damali, you can NOT miss watching this movie, this is the biggest jewel from indian film industry.

Not at all a body double, Madhubala learned classical dance only for this movie in early 1950s in just three months despite being a non dancer and having a hole in her heart she was very hard working n determined to her work ..it's a fact

Its quite frustrating to see that you who have absolutely wrong information calling the right person an ignorant...seriously its frustrating to see you imposing your wrong information so confidentially..I have read in almost all reputed film magazines like stardust, filmfare, cineblitz and the MOVIE magazine that it was a male dancer in charaaas portion of this song as Madhubala was very unwell and used to even vomit out blood due to hole in the heart....for an online reference just type on google "madhubala BODY DOUBLE IN PYAR KIIYA TOH DARNA KYA" and read the authentic indiatvnews' link about the correction of my information and what I said above. Thank you.

Set in the 16th-century Mughal court of Emperor Akbar, heir to the throne, Prince Saleem, falls in love with the beautiful commoner Anaarkali. Saleem's father, Emperor Akbar, refuses to let his son marry below his status and a mighty battle of wills ensues. Great review. Astute observations. This song and the end sequence of the movie were shot in colour even though the rest of the movie was filmed in black and white. The film was officially rereleased in colour and an edited version in 2004.
I remember seeing an interview and have read in some books where it was mentioned that the far shots from this song are actually of a body double. Laxmi Narayan - a guy from the dance director’s troupe undertook those moves as Madhubala had severe health issues and couldn’t move as fast as was needed for the sequence.

  • @0012345699
    @0012345699 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

It was intended to be the first color movie in India. But financial constraints and the use of Actual Pearls and Gold in jewellery went against the plan. To add to it, the 1947 partition led to the original group of writers /poets/producers to go separate ways.
In the end, after much request from one of the producer, it was agreed that ATLEAST THIS song be colorized.
Since it was planned to be entirely color picture, the colorized version of the film shows the Rich colors chosen by them , just in case it did gets colorized.

Madhubala plays the role of Anarkali a Courtesan in the Court of Akber the great Moghul Emperor in the mid 16th century and was considered a Golden Period then . This movie is possibly work of fiction about the forbidden Love story of Anarkali with the Crown prince Salim and when it is discovered she is imprisoned and tortured and when released she boldly professes her love for the prince in the full court in session with this beautiful song and performance . She was not a trained dancer but for this movie underwent rigorous training despite her failing health . This movie was release on August 05-1960
after being in production for almost ten years .The movie was in Black and White

Only the songs were done in colour. Then they where re-enhanced.
Madhubala was a heart patient and did most of the dancing in spite of fevers and heart issues. Madhubala died young.
The story is about a dancer falling in love with a Prince or vice versa. Lata Ji played monopoly only she was allowed to sing in those days because of politics.

The song was the only part of the film originally shot in colour. The film took years to make and Madhubala and Dilip Kumar (leads) did not speak off set as they had broken up at this point. The rest of the film was in B+W. The wish of the Director was for this to be in colour, but there wasn't the funding originally
I definitely think there was a dance double
Devious - this is Nigara Sultana, playing Bahar. She wants to marry Dilip (Prince Salim) and be Queen. He looks towards her to make her step back as only his bride would stand next to his throne
'Anarkali' is a maid girl that has fallen in love with Salim. In this song she is the King (played by PrithviRaj Kapoor - Karishma and Kareena Kapoors Great Grandfather) Akbar Mughal's prisoner (Salim is his son). The point of this song is that she would do her opening dance and disappear, however she began to sing saying 'If you love why fear' - this is why the King was angry
The film was very very expensive - in fact everything was real on set, including the chains that held Madhubala which cut and infected her
Yes Lata Mangeshkar sang this. But she began singing as a child in the early 40s (this film is 1960). She rose to power through Aayega Aanewala (Mahal - 1949) and her on slaught knocked almost every other singer out of the industry

First of all, thank you so much Jimmy for accepting my request.😁
Some trivial facts about this movie-
    1. Only two songs from this movie were shot in colour.
    2. Madhubala was not a professionally trained dancer, it was actually her body double (who was a male) in long shots.
    3. As the movie was made on a large scale, several foreign delegates (including premiers of various nations) visited the sets of this film.
    4. When the film was re-released in colour (2004), the background music was also recreated.
    5. Deewani Mastaani (from Bajirao Mastaani, 2015) draws inspiration from this song. Notice the mirror shots, similar shots were used in that song too. 😊

What a serious and sincere facial expression of someone who is not familiar with the lyrics. But her appreciation and facial expression say a million words. Great! Madhubala, the actress had a serious health condition while this movie was being shot. She had some heart condition and suffered much while this movie was being filmed in the early 1960s. The film was conceived in the 1940s and had to be delayed until the late 1960s for several reasons. I was 13 year of age when I saw the movie in 1963. I could not understand one word of Hindi but thoroughly enjoyed the scenes and songs. It was equal to any western movies of the day in cinematography.

You must always try to watch song with English subtitles, so you can get hold of the lyrics. This song is a masterpiece!!!! It says a story. The dancing girl and the King's son were in love with each other, opposed by the King. The Queen didn't say much.

this movie Mugal _E_ Asam was filmed in black and white. that is because tecnicolour had not come to indian at that time. but this one song was flimed in technicolor. this particular one. only. it took 10 years to make the film and was released in 1960. it is one of india's cinematic milestones. it was the first film to be digitally colored and re released in 2002. this movie has a lot of history. very few directors could be able to live up to it. so maybe no one has dared to try

The movie was made in B&W as color had not yet come in india, only this song was hand coloured in England which cost the maker lots of £. Emperor Akbar was 3rd king of Mogul dynasty, his grand-son built the Taj-Mahal. The actor is great grand dad of Ranbir Kapoor.

You should watch movies before 1970; because era from 1950s to 1960s is often called the golden era of Bollywood with some of the classics having some amazing subjects. Not to forget, the stars in those times, most of them were far more talented, and legendary in their own individual rights. After 1970s, perfect masala type (similar track kind films) wer more prevalent than before At least try these 30 movies: mrandmrs55.com/2014/03/04/the-top-30-greatest-classic-bollywood-films-of-all-time/

The song was shot in color because director felt it is required to convey the full impact, especially of the mirrors scene. The film took 7 years to make. The director wanted to reshoot the whole film in color but couldn’t do it due to 2 reasons:- 1. Budget
    2. Madhubala was critically ill by the time shooting for this movie was over. She died very soon after this movie released. Her sister acted as her body double for some scenes that were reshot during post-production.
One more thing .. Madhubala was a great dancer and she did most of this song herself. But during long shots, it’s actually a male dancer dressed like Madhubala. All those skirt traversals and top shots were filmed using a male dancer as Madhubala’s body double. But I don’t care. What impresses me most is Madhubala’s changing facial expressions - love when she looks at Dileep Kumar and stern when she looks at Prithviraj Kapoor. Such controlled theatrical performance. I am speechless.

Insaan kisee se duniyaa me ek baar mohabbat kartaa hai
If a person falls in love with someone once in this world
Is dard ko lekar jiitaa hai, Is dard ko lekar martaa hai
He lives with this pain and he dies with this pain
    Pyaar kiya to darna kya
Why should we be afraid, if we have loved
Jab pyaar kiya to darna kya
Why should we be afraid, when we have loved
Pyaar kiya koi chori nahin ki
We have just loved and haven't committed a crime
    Pyaar kiya
    We have loved
Pyaar kiya koi chori nahin ki
We have just loved and haven't committed a crime
    Chhup chhup aahe bharna kya
Why should we hide and then sigh
Jab pyaar kiya to darna kya
Why should we be afraid, when we have loved
    Pyaar kiya to darna kya
Why should we be afraid, if we have loved
Jab pyaar kiya to darna kya
Why should we be afraid, when we have loved

    gist of the song:
Why fear when you have loved (someone)?
Loving is not committing any crime, so why hide and sigh in solitude?
Mughal-E-Azam translates as The Mightiest Emperor, refers to Mogul Emperor Akbar (portrayed in the movie by Prithviraj Kapoor, the scion of Bollywood's famous Kapoor clan) who refused to allow his son Saleem (played by helpless looking Dilip Kumar) to marry his love Anarkali (Madhubala) as she was beneath his social status.
