This song was shot in colour and not digitally coloured later on. Your description of Madhubala as “light itself” is exactly how I perceive her. She was ethereal 💖

It was later coloured, see the black and white version.
@@DipaliMisra-uo2uuthe film was colorised later but this song was shot original in color even in 1960 version. K Asif really wanted the Colors of the sheesh mahal to be visible so he fought very hard to get this song shot in coloured.
@@DipaliMisra-uo2uuactually a major part of the movie was shot in color unlike popular belief. So if you’ve watched the black and white version, it’s probably a filter
Please watch the film as well...its legendary evergreen bollywood films one of the greatest of all time...Madhubala as an actress was also known as venus of bollywood as she was known to have one of the most beautiful face and smile in bollywood..even Madhuri Dixit was inspired by Madhubala...
My Dear Brit, When you read on the Lyrics and rewatch the song, one of the interesting things are the different expressions the emperor exhibits, especially when Madhubala says "Parda nahi jab koi khuda sa, bandon se parda karna kya" meaning "when there is no veil with God, why to keep veil with people" or in other words saying to Emperor that you are just human, not God...and then see the expression of emperor. Great work. Please reply if you noticed this.
Durga Khote (pronounced Khotey). She was a wonderful old time actress, later played mumsy roles. There's a story of her mother who was a famous dancer. Once they were abducted by dacoits and she was asked to dance for the chief. Durga was a baby then. Her mother danced with her in her arms. The dacoit chief was so impressed by her dance that he had them all escorted back without being harmed.
She plays Jodha Bai, the emperor Akbar's wife here. She was Rajput and Hindu. And Akbar was Muslim. Seeing their inter religious marriage, you wonder why he would object to his son marrying a dancer. The son had some 20 odd wives already.

This song was colored from very beginning...yes you are right that the movie was not fully colored due to budget issue..
Never heard this song and this movie, but I like the background setting and the costume from this MV. It's very artistic and representing the traditional dance art of India. Or maybe it's the modified one? Because when Madubala dance around, it also reminds me of some Turkish dance. So is it the mixture of Indian and Turkish dance?
And talk about your hair, that's not crazy, Matt. That's stylish. Nowadays what's called crazy and messy in the old era is becoming a trend and everyone is welcoming it 😄
Bro that dance you are referring is "kathak" & when long shots of Madhubala were shoot dance was performed by the lagendary Kathak Dancer Gopi Kishan.
I am lucky to be born and living in the city where this movie was shoot and have visited these locations 100s of time.

This movie was shoot at Amer castle lacated in Jaipur. Jaipur is also called Pinkcity. Its an old historical city and is capital city of the biggest state of India(Rajasthan). Jaipur is a famous destination for movie shooting and number one tourist city of India
Wasn’t there any subtitle available ? Would have been better if you had reacted to a subtitled version . Doing so you would have also some context and the meaning of song.
Hear the song with translation. This is urdu poetry and the lyrics convey a underlying message to the Emperor. This was partly true and historical though embellished bollywood style. This is a classical dance and song. And Bade Ghulam Ali is pronounced ( baray) a very great classical singer! I saw this film in Calcutta on 1960! When i went to visit my grandmother from pakistan!

She was married if to someone else on Emperor command. But when kater on prince Salim became Emperor, he got her back, made her queen and had many children with her. But in the movie story is changed and she is killed.
