  • Rummmmbbaaaaaa Jerry ! Wanna get in a good mood ? This will wake you up !
"Latino Session" Live at Los Angeles's Biltmore Bowl (Aug. 2nd 1989).
2 segments of a 1 hour long "Latino Session" where good ol' Jerry appears as guest in two songs.
1- with Carlos Santana (Jerry takes his first solo at 2:30 makin' those Latino girls jive !!) and again at 5:10 !!).
2- the second with Ruben Blades.
Already posted but unless you typed out the perfect key words, wasn't really seen (by me at least).
PS : Apparently, this was actually shot at the Hollywood Roosevelt for SHOWTIME, not the Biltmore. Go figure.

@Fred Jamison Listen to the “Rap” version of Fire on the Mountain. Can’t really conjure up any other examples but i’m sure if he was alive n well he’d be able to.

    • @nellyb1594

@Fred Jamison oh yeah definitely rap. And very much so with the type of rap thats very popular over the last 10ish years!
Seriously, throw in a very subtle, kinda subdued jazz type riff while running it through a phaser pedal...Jerry would absolutely kill that.

      @GratefulforFreePress 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@Burr Anderson I mean, there is SOME room for interpretation, I guess... but that first solo was definitely not typical Jerry in any meaningful sense, but that second one had “Classic Jerry” written all over it.

Where you been? They do it quite frequently. Jerry Garcia was playing with Celia, Tito Puentes and Carlos Santa - all together playing on the same stage. Jerry Garcia played with Los Lobos. JERRY GARCIA is fluent in Spanish and his repertoire reflects that.

  • @bradleyale

    Yep. I was there.
    It was so cool.
A “formal” dining room affair- tuxedos, smallish room with the stage about 2’ above the dance floor. I was 19 yrs old! My friend Eric and I saw it in the entertainment calendar that same day- we were so stoked! Without hesitation we headed to the biltmore. Here we are- tye dyes, blazing stoned and smiling, downtown LA. “Nope sorry”. No entry. A formal benefit, they said. Dude, we were SOOO out of place! We actually tried to charm our way in multiple times until they kind of ran us out. So we are dejected walking back to the van, I look up and see a door-”Service Entrance “ and...it was open! We stepped in and no shit straight away is the “service elevator “. I push the button. Machine noise and 5 seconds, door opens. In the elevator sits the Elevator Operator- a very small , old black man and he says, “boys want to go up to the party?”. Pinch me dude. Smiles and we go ”up”. Door opens into a darkly lit backstage. The elevator is gone. Must be dreaming... suddenly huge hands from a huge man wrap around us like we are toys- he says, “ enough games guys” and he pushes us through some curtains- “the” curtains of the dining room! Seriously. Now we are suddenly appeared as the MC is introducing the show. Stark. Tye dyes and smiling. Then the couple at that table invite us to duck our heads under their table! Seriously. We do. Smiling and blazing we wait for the music to begin. Amazing. We went from a sad walk to the van to being in the show in a matter of 1 minute and 40 seconds!
We danced the night away! Everyone but us in tuxes. Jerry, my buddy, 2’ from me all night’! memorable. What a great night! Thanks Carlos, Jerry.....Steve Jordan!

The accordion player is Esteban "Steve" Jordan (February 23, 1939 - August 13, 2010) was a jazz, rock, blues, conjunto and Tejano musician from the United States. He was also known as "El Parche", "The Jimi Hendrix of the accordion", and "the accordion wizard". An accomplished musician, he played 35 different instruments. He also was an actor in the talking heads film - True Stories . In the film he plays in a band with the character known as Radiohead. The band radiohead got their name from this song/movie . All Graceful instruments are known .

I was lucky enough to be at this show. The crowd was about 70% well-dressed Latinos and about 25% shaggy Deadheads. Everyone mixed just fine. Many of the Deadheads had weed and shared generously. It made for a very happy scene for the whole crowd. Garcia was just giddy playing with musicians he had never met or played with. Heck, despite his name, Garcia wasn't even really Latino.
The Grateful Dead played Cal Expo two days later and I was fortunate to be there too. Jerry was reasonably happy, healthy, and in shape that year and it came through in the music.

But what I really like is this is a blues mix that TH-cam pulled up so it's got Jerry Garcia and Stevie Ray Vaughan scroll down to find Carlos Santana and that's kind of about it I don't know I haven't dug that far into it but what a wonderful show and I'm sure Jerry and Stevie are upstairs kicking it right now

I wasn't expecting much after hearing Carlos taking the solo action by storm, but then Jerry came in and blew everyone away. It wasn't quite as clean, but it was radical and had that Jerry psychedelia. He did have a way of drowning everyone out with that commanding melody that brings you to a higher place and then totally melts your face completely.

I remember watching this benefit show with Linda Ronstadt etc. for L.A. Latino technical schools including music, on Tv. when it was originally broadcast or shortly there after, at my friend's place with special subscription for cable.
Remember Jerry Garcia was only half Spanish, not Latina American; and didn't speak Spanish because his Dad died when he was very young!

      Jerry wasn't Latin-American? Garcia??

Nope, like I said his father was Spanish. But Jerry loved to jam with Los Lobos & Carlos Santana; both of which I saw luckily open for Grateful Dead quite a few times (and elsewhere also several times). There is a video on here somewhere that was originally put on ABC on Independence Day that was recorded backstage a day or so before with Los Lobos backing up both Bob Weir & Garcia doing "This Land is your Land" by Woody Guthrie acoustic and one or two other tunes somewhere in Massachusetts in '82? Yes, yguary, I agree: that carpark 'This Land is Your Land' is very emotional. Amazing in this piece how Jerry transforms the Santana groove into something new.

Two of my top 5 favorite, and most influential to me, guitarists of all time righ here, dude. The way they rock those riffs and patterns throughout the improv...mmm..that's how jam right there.
I always explain it to myself like, "Play your solo in sections." Like:
1st part) Find a little riff with subdued sound and do some improv around it
2nd) Different riff with improv full on
3rd) riff a little bit 3/4 of the time signature, then get a little bit wild
That's how I learned to solo/jam from these two in particular. There's several guitarists out there that are masters, but these two master the art of a groovin jam session.

JERRY GARCIA knows what to do with this accordion madman. JERRY GARCIA performs it every night in the space jams, that are in every GRATEFUL DEAD performance after the drum solos.
