Owing to severe mental illness I haven't been beach fishing 2 years & I'd completely forgotten how to tie shock leader to main line. Thanks so much for the video😊
Just wanted to say thank you. Went on my first ever beach fishing sesh tonight using your knot tutorial for my shock leader, and it didn't fail. (unlike another comment I saw) Caught one fairly decent whiting less than 2 mins after my first cast, 5 hours and nothing else lol. But we cooked up a couple bacon sarnies and coffee on the beach, loved every minute of it! Thanks again!
A Mahin knot is very similar, but uses wraps down and back rather than the "clinch" finish applied here. Sorted that one out today. Saw this knot and it was attributed to a Welsh fisherman, but when someone called it the "Mahin" I went hunting. It's not-it's a bit simpler. But I do like it. Thanks.
had to rewatch to remind myself as not tied one for year or so. i remember someone say when you tighten the 60lb to the 18ib it crushes the line so its best to pull it through and cut off before winding around.
I learned a shorter length (than typically advised) would work dandy. It is: 8 wraps on the reel, plus the distance from the reel to the tip, then add three feet. That's only 15' on my 10' rod and I like it like that. That is also only 1' shorter than double the reel-tip distance. Also like a proper Mahin knot for the joining to fluoro, but I've not put this one to the test yet. It's a bit quicker.
Tied this identical to the way you did 3 times and it broke everytime! Thought id try it cos it looks easy but think ill stick to the spiderhitch knot!
Try 8 to 10 turns if it breaks in 4 or 5 I had the same prob. But it is a good knot 👍 might depend on what breaking strain of line your using as well, I had 30lb to a 60lb leader it kept snapping so used more turns.
Good knot, but why have a shock leader 3x strength of main line ? The main line will break well before the leader. Surely lighter leader will make for better casting without losing overall strength ?
The shock leader is designed to take the brunt "shock" of the cast of using big leads and thumping out at distance, if it was weak line it would potentially crack on the cast.
enough for a couple of winds around the spool, plus the the length of your rod from spool to tip, with a bit out the end at the tip to attach your rig too
@@ukseafishing That's not the Mahin knot others show. It may be a simplified version. The Mahin on at least four other sources doesn't do the "Clinch" thing, it wraps up the line and then back down wrapping both ways (one version was 10 up and 6 back). A/K/A the Carrot knot. I'll tie both and test to see which I use, didn't say I don't like it.
@@AllanO808 it is a big knot, doesnt catch in rings when casting, but is a real PITA when there's a lot of weed in the water, it bunches up on this knot something awful. Albright knot is a little better, but im the end I went over to tapered leaders joined with a blood knot
@@ukseafishing brill video btw mate but that’s good news hahaha, quick question do u have any recommendations for bait if I can’t get my hands on lug or rag worms
Get some squid or mackerel, you can get it online posted if your local tackle shops don't have it, use small strips of either and use bait cotton to secure to hooks buddy
Going back to fishing after almost thirty years. Thanks for the tutorials

Hope all's well with you now bud. Nothing like a few fish to put a big stupid grin on your face
Get well buddy. Fishing is great way to get out in wilds while suffering from mental health issues, if possible

Thats great! Glad it helped.
Nothing wrong with a nice whiting. Beats a blank!

Great vid. I have had a nightmare with snapping leader knots lately. Will try this out.
Amazing and very easy knot. Thank you for video🙂
Thankyou mate new to this that made it very simple to do, much appreciated.
Really good video, step by step talk through is spot on! Helped me alot
Thanks mate. I try to make them easy to follow

I'm going hound fishing tonight, so thanks for that video pal
No worries. Tight lines!
Great video, I'm just getting back into beach fishing and was wondering what was best, A tapered shock leader vs none tapered?
Thank you Andy
what a great knot, thank you subscribed
cheers mate
Thanks, great video
Thankyou
Will, that shock leader worked for trout fishing

appreciate the advice
welcome mate
Can use this with braid & shockleader
How much shock leader do you use for a diawa sealine sha30 on a 10 ft rod??
The length of the rod plus around a 6 ft drop plus 3 or 4 wraps around the reel, so approx 17ft for that Set up mate
@@ukseafishing Awesome thank you
@@ukseafishingdouble the length of your rod has served me well for years

Will this work for tapered leader too?
Yes I use tapered

Thats very strange. Never had it fail.. where did it break?
On the knot all three times.
Very strange

IF u have a 4oz lead u need a 40lb leader if u have a 5oz lead u have a 50lb leader and so on its a rule of thumb we have

What am i doing wrong when i tie this shock leader knot the tag on the leader is facing down instead of up.
Its hard to sat without seeing your knot mate
doesn't seem to work with braid and a mono nylon shock leader?
I've only tried it on mono mate
May I ask how much shock leader you should spool on?
enough for a couple of winds around the spool, plus the the length of your rod from spool to tip, with a bit out the end at the tip to attach your rig too
Why we need this knot?
Brill haven’t fished for 28 years and totally forgot
Welcome mate
Yes, yes, nice knot, simple and easy to follow video. But why would you need a shock leader in the first place?
for the weight of your lead you're casting out, main line isnt strong enough, leader should be 10lb per oz of lead
Honestly this knot is giving me mental health problems
Took me 40min to do one
Hi what's the name of the knot thanks
hi its called a mahin knot. never failed me

Seems rather bulky with the granny knot catching the rings.
It doesn't catch at all mate, give it a go, also try it with tapered shock leader for an even smaller knot 👍
@@ukseafishing I've been using the Alberto knot with good results.
Also a very good knot!

still not so clear as your doing to fast .. we stupid ppl like things slow and steady
no need for all that noise in the intro
I've updated the intro since then mate
