I've fished 45ish years and this used to scare me many years ago, until now that is, the crimps are much softer and gentle on the line. I get an occasional grip problem from carpol tunnel and when tying knots they look bloody dreadful. These are a game changer, slick as you like 🚀
What a great Idea, I am going to give this method a try, once i can afford those crimping pliers! a lot easier than trying to fiddle around with those uniknots ! which i still have trouble with,😪 good clear video, well done.
I got a set of those crimping pliers, use them all the time to put bootlace ferrules on the ends of wires. Got mine in a set from Lidl, about £10. Alternatively there are other crimp pliers available, ones that are like more conventional pliers and are cheaper, take a look in the carp fishing section.
Yes I’ve used Sandman’s technique for a couple of years. Only recently did I have a rig fail on the crimp when it was snagged. Therefore I have added to the strength by blobbing the end like you and also added a dab of superglue to the line before tightening the crimp up.
Good idea with the superglue👍 a while ago (dont know if is still the case) gemini rigs were made with the line bonded somehow (perhaps with glue?) rather than knotted
Interesting and informative video, like the blob touch to expand line, prior to crimping, think I stay with knots, but crimps good on thicker line, for large fish (conger etc) rigs PS like your previous video on “rig making board” will be adapting my workmate accordingly to take a new insert Go steady
Yeah, I'm a bit like yourself, Crimping is something I've been thinking about, but I'm not sure. I'm lucky in that I already have a pair of those crimp pliers, they are the same ones as used for electrical bootlace crimps. So I guess the thing to do is make up some rigs the normal way and make up some the crimped way and try them out side by side as it were. - Like your little tip about using the lighter to put a bit of a blob on the line. One thing I do know about crimps is carp anglers (those guys that like to dress entirely in that green / khaki colour and hang out in the section of the tackle shop where everything is that colour), well those guys have been using crimps to come up with there elaborate rigs for a long time so I guess crimps can't be all bad.
That's a good idea crimps already on order will be giving it ago, looks much easier than tying knots in 60lb line and it looks nice and neat, cheers Paul.
Really impressed with this! Off to buy a crimp tool, being partially sighted I struggle seeing to tie the knot properly so will give this a go.. Cheers
simple, affective, clean, and only thing I would do is put a little float on the hook to keep it off the bottom unless you want it there. Other than that, I would use for black drums, red drums,. Great Vide . Tight Lines.
I use two crimps now. One behind the other. But I now also blob the end as well. It allows me to get very accurate modular traces. I did find that using crimps on the hook snoods to be part under pressure. Hence the double crimp I now use.
Very informative. It certainly looks very neat, but I don't see the advantage in it over knots. I'd be very interested to see a test in which you make two equal lengths one with crimps and the other with knots and plate load it to see which breaks first. Il purchase myself one of those crimping tools if I can find one
Hi I Have made up rigs with crimps. I did a pull test, on the crimps, it's easy enough to set up, but and please use some safety glasses and gloves, and with a spring balance, see how strong it holds, this will give a bit of confidence in using crimps.
@@ukseafishing i did a pull test at work the other day. Used a lead clip crimped on each end of a length of 80lb shockleader around 3ft long. Welded a small hook made from a welding rod onto a piece of flat bar long enough to stand both feet on. Made another with a hook welded to a bar long enough to hold with both hands. Crimped the lead clips on, with the end of the line blobbed with a lighter flame before sliding it all down so was 2mm ish outside the crimp, then crimped so the flame wasnt close to the main line. Hooked it up and pulled with steady pressure, harder and harder until something gave way. The line eventually broke, an inch or two below where the crimp was on the top lead clip. But didnt break next to the swivel at all, and the crimps didnt give out. Stood the test for me so am going to use this to make my rigs up with from now onwards, but still use knots to attach hooks to help baiting up.
@@ukseafishing Using a suitable spring balance or small weighing scale, clamp a clip in a vice, then clip your crimped rig body, for the test, i used a short piece of rig body, with a clip and swivel, attached your tool to a suitable clip oval slit ring, and with a steady pull, measure the BS, to test the crimps hold.
I am a bit late to the party but i to have just brought the crimping tool and plan to try crimping . Been doing it for years on the boat for conger and Tope traces . How's it been for you
Good video, I would give the crimp a go but only on the top and bottom swivels double the line, no adjustments needed, once crimped that's staying there.😎
Careful what line you use , I have had some very good line that seems slicker than others and it most certainly does slip , for me it was a complete failure using the same crimp pliers as hard as I could and a good test pull the end link ended up in one hand and the line plus crimp on it in the other , seems ok on single line, but for me not the double line ,IMHO safe only in certain circs .good vid though mate .
I always understood mono had to be a double barrel sleeve and wire was always a single sleeve. ?? What is the breaking strain of the crimps? I like the look of this
It just seems like another expense to me. Tho that could just be the Exmoor in me being tight. I personally only use crimps for flapper rigs. Tho your rig looks very neat and tidy with the crimp.
+Steven Price could be seen that way but I think its just an alternative option for those who maybe aren't to clever with their knots. thanks for the comment.
@@ukseafishing Oh yes definitely a good alternative. I also recommend some of the rig builders on Facebook. Some sell them for less than a pound a rig as they bulk buy the components. We'll worth it to save the hassle for some people.
Cool. I have a bunch of those style crimps assorted sizes and those square crimpers for electrical work. Never occured to me for fishing so thanks very much. Have you pull tested to see how it fares?
I’ve used crimps for years with great success but I never use them to attach the weight clip. Think you get less line distortion with crimps as knots always leave a little kink in the knot when mono is stretched/tensioned. Blobbing the tail is a good idea and shall use that tip, but does that work with braid?
Great video, I like my rigs nice and neat so I will give the crimps a go, great idea putting a blob on tag end. Where did you get the crimps from. COYS
They have used crimps on wire traces and rigs for years...I have used them on my 0.80mm Mono Rigs like One Man Rifle Maker says...two crimps at each end of the main rig body but passing the tag end over the second crimp then back down (inside towards first crimp), leaving very short gap between the two - this provides extra security and for a while I watched the gap as I fished but as it never moved I took to covering both crimps with some shrink wrap to tidy everything up - by the way Paul changed the 4 jaw crimping tool from eBay (like you are using in the vid) to a six jaw one which I use (these are much better) - I guess someone needs to do a full pull break test in the same way that knots are tested - hope this helps - as always do your own due diligence as safety is imperative with a 6oz lead on a power cast - tight lines
I'll look at the 6 way crimping tool, also thats a great idea with the 2 crimps and up and down through the crimps. When you tidy it up with shrink tube does the heat to shrink the tube damage the line at all?
Hi Dean I think somewhere you were going to pull test these, did you manage to do that? Hopefully Good results ?. Also how did the fishing test go. With these, thanks in advance
just started using crimps many yrs using knots , my rigs are loads quicker too make , dont think i would want one on the weighted end just in case the lead flys off
Very well, never had a single rig fail...however I only used them for short to medium range casting, any power long range stuff I only used knotted rigs..
being a sparky i have tried my knipex and also a cheap pair like yours,i had a lot of failures i mentioned this to sandman but i never heard anything back,i made conger rigs and pike rigs and most failed, just be careful when casting with this idea

not to sure on the crimping tool myself, you can only use them on the bigger crimps, they don't seem to crimp down on the smaller ones
