In 1900, Debussy had written some incidental music for his friend Pierre Louys' Chansons de Bilitis (from which he had set three poems a couple of years earlier), for the unusual combination of two flutes, two harps and a celesta. This remained unpublished till recently. Nor was it known until 1932 that it had any links with the Six Epigraphes antiques, which Debussy :omposed in 1914, reshaping the musical natter of his earlier score for piano four hands, and bringing it up to the level of his supreme stylistic maturity. These six short pieces, the two longest of which only reach some sixty bars, were certainly conceived as a cyclic whole, as shown by the succession of tempi and tonalities, and by the return of the theme of the first piece to round off the last. In a letter to his publisher Jacques Durand, dated July 11th, 1914, Debussy explains : « Some time ago, I intended to turn it into an orchestral Suite, but the times are hard, and life harder still for me. » In 1932, Ernest Ansermet fulfilled the composer's wish, and this beautiful and far too seldom heard orchestral version is recorded here. The orchestrated version of Pour l'Egyptienne at 10:58 is incredible, it captures the warmth and mistery of the original piano version but it adds a sort of very windy and sandy texture to it through the use of strings and woodwinds, unbelievably good

Unless I miss my guess, Ralph Vaughan-Williams had heard and admired these pieces. And. Enjamin Britte, too. Listen again and think of some of their works. Debussy broke a lot of musical ground. Brilliant, and far, far ahead of his time.
