    For those who don't know about the story behind Bach's Brandenburg concertos. In 1721, Bach composed six “concertos for various instruments”. He dedicated them to a Prussian nobleman and sent the manuscript as a gift, hoping to land a job as the court composer in Brandenburg. The nobleman never replied. Bach eventually took another job in Leipzig, where he lived for the rest of his life. The 6 concertos were lost for 130 years. They were never performed. The manuscript was eventually sold for about $20 and shelved in a library. The Brandenburg Concertos sat there until 1849, when they were discovered and published for the first time. Thank god.

    i don't think I've ever heard someone say they didn't like Bach, ever. There's a sense of humanity and warmth in his music that regardless of your
    age or knowledge of music it touches you unlike any other composer. All other composers (Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Rachmaninov etc;) all
    revered him as the father of their music

And when I take my last breath, I'd like to have a violin virtuoso play the genius' music along with a recital of my own poetry. Please, no tears unless they are shed out of joy.

    Notes on the room photographed - It is the Concert Room from Sanssouci Palace, and J.S.Bach's son played that piano.
    This concert room contributed to the fame of Sanssouci Palace. The house concerts of the king, who had been a passionate flute player since his youth and composed 120 flute sonatas, took place here. He was accompanied by his music teacher Johann Joachim Quantz and by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The fortepiano, modern at the time, on which the son of the famous composer Johann Sebastian Bach played, still stands in the concert room; next to it is one of Frederick's instruments. The musical king devoted one to two hours a day to playing the flute.

    Ever since I was a child I have loved the Brandenburg Concertos. I sometimes play a game where I wonder what type of music will I hear in heaven. I think of many pieces of music from Bach to Lauridsen. There are times when I listen to the Brandenburgs and close my eyes, I start crying because it almosts feels as if I am there. What exquisite beauty these concertos are.

      You echo my feelings exactly. My late Mum(bless her heart) was a violinist and I used to sit in awe as a child when listening to the orchestra that she played in. I loved the smell of the resin they used to treat their bows, the sound of the turning of the pages of sheet music and of course how amazing that one man could hear all the instruments in his head to create such music. Today, when I sit quietly and listen to this music, I can smell the resin and hear the turning of pages and the focused faces of the orchestra and I get very emotional. My prayer is that my mum is up there playing in God's orchestra.

    I miss Abbado so much. Someone here has mentioned the clarity of these Brandenburgs. His readings were all like that, even the darkest and most turbulent. He found the passion in the darkest scores, but always also found the smallest details and brought them out. He considered everything. Listen sometime, for contrast, to his reading of Mahler's sixth. Balance of passion and clarity like no one else.

    Interesting to read the comments in here....too fast for some, too slow for others. Great music like this can take multiple approaches, they're all good. The brilliance of Abbado comes thru here, incredibly musical, elegant, light, always moving forward, full of little details. If you look at the notes in the beginning, you can see it's an Italian orchestra, and the Italians have a way of playing that's light, fast, spinning on the beat, dancing, yet singing, just like the language. The Germans sit on the back side of the beat and shape the start of the tone, just like the language has a first syllable stress. Barenboim talks about this in his book on conducting, how the native language of players influences their phrasing and tempi. That's why Handel came to Italy to learn the Italian style and sound, and why too many German trained conductors do Puccini and Mozart Italian operas way too slowly (don't even get me started on Rossini LOL.) Even Puccini complained about it in his time. Don't get me wrong....German musicians are stunning at their art, also! It's just stylistically different. If you speak Italian, you "get it."

    • @UdoKrause
      @UdoKrause 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No real need to bash "The Germans" - take your time with a recording made with Hermann Scherchen as conductor ... not so much sitting .... but I know, Germans got some "orthogonal" reputation by all surrounding 😬 them ... with the kitchen it's the same.

    • @jrthiker9908
      @jrthiker9908 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@UdoKrause Sorry, no intentional bashing or offense was meant! I'm just commenting on generalizations between German and Italian musicians, which to a certain extent continue in our modern time. I'm not the only one noticing this. Barenboim puts it in a very humorous context...he writes trying to get a German orchestra to play the Barbiere overture up to speed with the right color is difficult, as is trying to get an Italian orchestra to play the Tristan overture with the deep texture and rhythmic pull is hard. Facetious, yes, but with a grain of truth. You can hear Celibidache chastise a young Italian conductor his masterclass videos for being too "Italian" and needing to feel the German phrasing. I've talked with string player friends of mine in the NY Philharmonic who notice the same with string players and conductors. I even hear it the distinctive timbre that is cultivated in Italian pianists (I live in both the US and Italy.) There is an undeniable Italianita' that you hear in everyone from amateur street bands to the La Scala and San Carlo orchestras. From a linguistic/cultural perspective, these national differences should be celebrated and something we sorely miss in the US, where orchestras tend to play with a bland sameness of tone and evenness of tempo (the so-called "International School".) The closest we have to an orchestra with a European sound is Cleveland. So for me, to hear Abbado do Bach was hearing a German composer (with all the beautiful traditions of that style) interpreted with Italianita'.
