This music is simply thrilling. Exquisite. And I discovered a new musical artist and I discovered some of the history of the harp in recent history. My gratitude to Classical Music / Reference Recording for sharing this to us. My soul is uplifted! Deep bow and all blessings!
This is my introduction to this marvelous harpist. I've read her biography and I am curious if anyone knows how she was able to continue to perform in Nazi-occupied France given Nazi racist policies concerning Jews and the arts.
Great Lily Laskine, a myth! But, is it only me or there's a tuning problem? I m listening over and over again, but still...Not sure about the tuning, maybe it was done in purpose? I feel it mainly in the higher register...
She always played on Érard harps, and those are very difficult to regulate, so even if the strings were tuned perfectly, it's possible that the natural and sharp register may be out of tune.
I'd be interested to learn anything about her tuning approach. I accept that Mme Laskine was super talented and skilled... yet in the opening bars of this recording my (Western/British/21st Century) ears are telling me that something sounds slightly "off" in the lower registers. So I'm assuming that this is an intentional tuning choice (rather than the harp being out of tune) and I'm curious about what others know of this.
It's very possible that it's actually the harp mechanism. Érard harps are extremely difficult to regulate, so it's possible that there was barely anything to be done about it.
