The WA76 really brought out the room on the drums. There’s an open and idiosyncratic response going on that really works. The KT76 does this too, but with a little less vibe. The plugs were all kinda vibe-less, they certainly didn’t bring out the space between the notes the way the WA76 did. Great comparison. I really appreciate how you switched between the WA76 to the other 76 and then back to the WA76. Really helpful. Thanks!

Kt 76 for me, I like clean, not distortion...I know that's what you're going for with an 1176 . But I need transparency. I'm glad they made a 76 that gives you that.

I've always found the Waves CLA 76 to work very well in the context of a mix and quick to dial in. I own a WA76 and use it mainly for tracking and own many other 76 style plugins, which all have differences. I suppose it's all about context and how they work within a full mix. One version of a 76 may subjectively sound better on it's own in solo but if you are rolling off the bottom end, eq'ing or processing afterwards, you may find that another choice is better.

I'm the same, I still love CLA 76 Blue on vocals, nearly always wins for me.

To me CLA 76 is the best vocal compressor I ever tried. And not to say anything bad about this comparison video, but its important to notice that the waves version doesn't follow the same timing options as the original. Which means the fast attack, is faster than the other ones he compares with. So when he cranks the attack at fastest speed, it completely dulls the transients.
To me, the only way to compare these, is to find the sweet spot on each different hardware/software for the same audio clip, since the timings and saturation levels clearly aren't the same, even if the developers claim they are. Also, its worth noticing, its common for very experienced vocal producers, to use the CLA 76 over anything else in the same category, and to me, for good reasons. It sounds amazing if you know how to use it properly. And lastly, there's a reason it haven't been updated for ages, because it works, the CLA 76 is a modern classic.

The warm is saturated that is why you think it sounds more open and louder. It is to me a cross between a rev D and a blue stripe. To much saturation for vocal, also you can turn down the input to the waves and push the level harder for a more saturated sound. You see that the different plugs and hardware tend to saturate and different input levels, the warm tends to get crispy faster then emulations. A real 1176 rev d does not get so saturated so soon. I do like the warm audio as color piece but I would not reach for it on a vocal....Stam has the better clone in this case. The bass through the warm causes it to distort even more because it is not very accurate in the low end, basically the head room is low on the warm which causes it to distort in a pleasing way for some things.

just a quick suggestion on doing audio comparisons, its useful to flip the phase and combine two sources so we can hear what the actual difference is as well, sometimes that tells me a lot such as if I'm hearing a difference that really isn't there, etc

      Good idea

    • @IgniteAMR
      @IgniteAMR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I’m not too sure that’s a good test. It definitely lets you here the difference, however.
A lot of what you’re hearing is the nonlinear nature of the analog gear and even the programming of plugs.
For instance if you put a slate digital plug-in On an audio track and bounce it twice, Then re-import it to perform an old test. You will hear a difference.
The same if you do it with the same piece of hardware. So it does tell you there is indeed a difference, But it doesn’t exactly tell you what the difference is.
For instance if something is brighter then another thing you’re still going to have to use your ears to figure out the difference. All another test will show you is that there is a difference.
Notably logic plug-ins don’t program these nonlinear ‘analogue’ differences. So they do indeed cancel out.

It seems R&B (as in soul, not Hip-Hop) and Jazz (contemporary smooth jazz, not straight ahead and no screaming saxophones) are rarely presented. Rock, Dance music and Hip-Hop seem to be the only genres that get attention.

KT had some good stuff, it'd get the job done in a tracking setting IMO; but I agree that the Warm was the overall winner here.
Surprisingly, the Branworx wasn't doing it for me like I thought it would. Instead, I really enjoyed the Slate. It sounded the most "analog" despite it being a little grittier and saturated. (But I also like to use a fair amount of saturation when mixing anyhow :D )

Great method for comparison. As always, the software is a joke in comparison to hardware. I think compression is the last thing for software to get right. They get away with EQ because there are little harmonics involved. Compression is adding a ton, and as you can hear, the software sounds 'empty' next to the hardware. Even when they get the saturation right, they smear the structure of each note. Hardware retains punch and definition while adding a bunch of harmonics.

Clearly the Warm Audio sounds wonderful, but this needs a really key thought, to understand what's going on. The Warm audio - has a digital to analog, as well as an analog to digital conversion, in the pathway. so that conversion will have an influence on the sound.
And one has to think of how these inputs and outputs were calibrated, i.e what audio level is equivalent to 0 DFBS on the inputs and outputs, cos changing this calibration, will introduce a certain amount of different "distortions", so its not going to be easy matching the exact calibration between the hardware and the software versions, unless you really know what you are doing.
Furthermore, in a compressor, oversampling may have a benefit, cos compression is a non linear transformation. So it depends on how well the compressors were oversampled internally to remove aliasing.
An interesting comparison nevertheless. Credit to the producer of this channel, who usually has something interesting and thought provoking to say, and much of the time has a well thought out conclusion, but obviously you also have to do your own thinking. Nice channel. Not too controversial, a good addition to youtube.
From all these comparisons, on several youtube channels, my conclusion is simply, two things - is this going to make a difference to your customer, the person who consumes the final result of your efforts. By consumer I do not mean only commercial consumers, but also those who listen to your results for free, if your audio effort is for a charitable purpose, or just music for friends and family. i.e. in all the energy that it takes to create a piece of music from start to finish, and publish and market it, how much of a difference does one compressor or another make? If your customer is paying a lot and you have a lot of competition, then every single incremental improvement, is a bonus to you, if it helps or you think it helps you come up with a better product.
So at the end of the day, its all about perception, using an inexpensive plugin, will still produce a result that is more than good enough, if you know what you are doing, and understand issues like aliasing. So a lot of this is not just the plugin or hardware, but the knowledge of the engineer. If you know what you are doing, you can make a plugin sound about as good as a hardware unit, like I said - If you know what you are doing!!! At least sound good enough that it should be good enough for your free listeners, to enjoy, with the low cost of your plugin not being the limitation.
Knowing how each tool contributes to the sound will help you bring the sonics closer to what you would prefer the audio to sound like. For most people - I would say - start out with plugins - and until you know how to crank out spectacular mixes with inexpensive plugins, there is no point investing in expensive gear, cos most of what makes a good mix, is the skill of the engineer - their ability to understand what each plugin is doing, and how much effort to spend on different aspects of the audio, cos some things are not as important to the final sound, which is also the real skill of an audio engineer - efficiency. We do not have 10,000 years to create a piece of music, so a lot of this is also about knowing your gear so well, that you can quickly obtain results with the gear.
This I think is where certain well known hardware units are justified, and are worth the high prices you pay for them. In a high value commercial setting, where time is money, and the customer is waiting, this is the real reason to invest in certain gear, cos 9 times out of 10, the controls, and the range of sounds it can produce, can result in a decent result - very quickly, especially the tactile nature of the knobs, as well as the sound.
So if you have customers who are "paying" for you to have expensive gear - sure please get some. Otherwise make do with what you can afford. In today's world where there are hundreds of free and inexpensive software plugins for every kind of processing, there is no longer any excuse, the only thing is each of these tools takes time to learn, and learn to be quick and efficient in using them to dial in the sound you want. This takes months and years of practice - listening, and constantly thinking about the craft, and the learning never stops. This hunger to know more, and apply the the knowledge more, and the countless hours, spent actually mixing and remixing things, over many years results in the "audio" skills where you can very quickly dial in an acceptable sound, 99% of the time, from tools you are extremely familiar with, this is the key, not how much the gear costs. Do you know your gear, and all its limitations, and how to overcome - i.e compensate where needed for its undesirable attributes? This takes months and years of practice, trial and error, making mistakes, and probably an attitude of never giving up on that ambition to be a superb audio mixing engineer, within the budget of the tools you can afford, which I think is mostly time and opportunity and effort, given that these tools in digital format are either available for free or not much money, if you really do not have much money to spend on these things.

For the drums example I am going to respectfully disagree. The Slate Digital sounded quite "boxy" *very* different than Warm Audio and very different to 76 - KT, MC-77 and in my opinion the Slate was closer to the Waves, although the MC-77 was closer to both the hardware units, which also for me are slightly different but for the money a single Warm Audio goes for, I would rather get a pair of Klark Tekniks, personally.
Generally speaking there seems to be something in the Slate plug in that saturates, a lot and it was audible in all examples. I don't own the plug in so I hope you're not tied to this sound, otherwise it would be something to reach for, for very specific situations.

Use the UAD 1176’s. They blow these hardware units away by far. Plus you won’t be contributing to the waste when you try to sell these hardware units but they end up in the trash at some point. BEFORE YOU BASH: I have worked in some of the biggest studios in Hollywood for over 30 years and have done all these tests. Unless you have real 1176’s from different eras you’re wasting your money on these clones because the UAD stuff is spot on.

I love how you somehow legitimize an "opinion" to make it a fact by saying your ears have decided that compared to the best and most expensive hardware in the world, UAD is better. Well my ears tell me a hardware unit like the KT76 is as good if not better than plugins. It isn't because it sounds exactly like a vintage 1176, but instead because it sounds like a good 1176 style compressor that retains the 3D sound on the kick and the snap of the snare as well as the width of the tone that UAD or plugs just can't get. Analog has more width, separation, and depth than plugins do. EQ's are getting good but compressors and summing? They still make a difference. In my "opinion" of course!

@ Adam .. I feel you I’ve done so many of my own compressor shoot outs where me and all my friends process with our hardware to the best of our ability for a song and share the session. I’ve tried all the cheaper hardware and wanted the warm and clones to hold up… if the sounded better than plugs I’d have racks and racks of them… but they do don’t. I do find some of the reissues blow the plugins out of the water … UA classics La2a,La3a,1176 but the vintage still bring a vocal up on another level.
The retro 176 is on this level to but it’s that fat tube sound not the quick fet.
