    Bought one, then bought a second one for stereo. Also ordered the KT-2A, two of them. Insane value for money. Cheap hardware that still manages to sound better than some of the best plug ins that I have.

    very nice compressor for the money. I have 1176LN's, and my friend bought these. They stand up very well to the original in the compression quality, and in how the controls function.

    a lot of people are sh*tting on it because "you can't really hear the compression" and yeah, it is not breaking up into distortion that easily and much - but i bet a lot of people would have gone mad for this aspect 50-60 years ago and made that a classic 😂 excited for my unit to come

    First, this video has a nice clarity tot it that lets me hear what the differences are better than many similar videos. Second, the compressor sounds nice and it sounds very clear. However, it doesn't really sound like an actual 1176 to me. The actual 1176 has more color to the sound and that color adds a character that makes the 1176 as desirable as it is. I am impressed with the Klark Teknik 1176 as its own thing that maybe has 1176 influence but that that plants its own flag.

    Thanks so much, great video! Honestly this is the best Klark Teknik 1176 compressor review that I’ve watched on TH-cam! Looking forward to seeing a review on their EQP-KT Classic Tube Equalizer, I’m interested in buying it but unfortunately there’s poor content and tests about it so far on TH-cam so I’m not able to decide. • @spi-fi_media
    @spi-fi_media ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The original 1176 has a “no buttons in” mode. You’re still running through the transformers etc. The Distressor “Brit mode” copies this which they also call 1:1 mode. This unit seems to add zero saturation or distortion at all, which would seem to “bypass” The compression, but not the electronics. I highly recommend you A/B this mode with a raw track and run them out of phase from each other to see if it’s a true bypass, or a 1:1 mode.
    Also, no all-buttons-in mode demo? That’s like, the 1176 “thing”!

    • @spi-fi_media
      @spi-fi_media ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve generally found Klark/Midas/Behringer to be going for “transparent”, probably due to the transformers, so 1:1 may appear to bypass, but you’d barely tell.
      Great review though. After so many people bash on this thing, i think I may be able to use it, but I might sooner grab a Drawmer 421 which does the same thing in stereo and dual-mono in a single rack space.
      Just food for thought! 🍲 🧠

    There is a question I wanted to ask for so long. I own this unit, the waves and the UAD plug-in, why they both have a situation that with the same input level, ratio 4 compressed more than ratio 8, 12 and 20? When it comes to limiting, ratio 8 compressed more than 20. Is there any logic behind that? Cheers from Hong Kong 🇭🇰

      I don't have any videos demos of the KT-2A but I have been using one for a while and am blown away by the thing. I bought it as a stop gap for some sessions and planned to replace it with an LA-2A, but the KT is still here, stock valves and all.
      I run a Daking Mic Pre EQ into it, which is a gorgeous sounding pre in its own right, and the 2A is the icing on the cake. A remarkable product for silly cheap money.

    I have an RNC compressor that's extremely neutral amd extremely fast...
    I wonder how it would sound to use the RNC to round out the peaks, then into the Klark for the color / fatness...

    • @ZedMartyProduction
      @ZedMartyProduction  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a RNC too and yes it will work nicely. Try it in limiting (25:1) with fast release for peak limiting. I actually do that quite often with the KT-2A as this is a slower comp. 1176 as a Limiter going into the 2A.

      hey! I have it inserted it on my console and the line input gain of the channel is around 30dB. I actually can leave the output of the 76 pretty low and get a good level coming out of it. (around 36) I have two units now and they behave the same in terms of output gain. However, I drive the input gain on the unit a little more, which seems to have less noise. (around 28-12) Overall, I think it's better to come in with a hotter signal rather than boosting it with the output gain afterwards.

    Hi man, super helpful videos great work. As you have reviewed basically all of the compressors I am looking at currently I was wondering out of the ART Pro II VLA, RNC, RNLA, KT-76 and KT-2A, which one you would recommend as a general workhorse comp? I have just grabbed an Apollo x8 but want to foray into outboard to give the signal path a bit more colour. Main reason is to track vocals and get a bit more out of the vocal performance, however as my only outboard it would be cool to use elsewhere and thus preferably stereo/dual mono. If there was a real sonic superiority I wouldn't be that against grabbing 2 of the KT's though. Let me know your thoughts, would appreciate any advice massively. Thanks

    • @ZedMartyProduction
      @ZedMartyProduction  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I‘d go with 2 KT-76, works on so many sources! But I can also recommend the RNLA. It has a little more character than the RNC and it can be super fast or slow like an opto-comp.

    I just picked one of these up and haven't had a chance to fully test it out, but did notice a big jump in the noise floor when dialing the output to 18 and higher. There's a sweep there that introduces noticeable noise that makes the unit pretty much unusable in that range. Does the unit you tested do the same, or has anyone else who owns one noticed that issue as well?

    • @ZedMartyProduction
      @ZedMartyProduction  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Klark Teknik 1176 has the classic FET sound of the original unit - fast, aggressive but not harsh sounding. The Fredenstein is a little smoother, I would say it's a mixture of a 1176 and a dbx.

    • @Mansardian
      @Mansardian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Gav, sorry to say that but if you want a 1176 just for the all buttons in mode you seem to be one of those typical media-hype influenced, young and not very experienced audio engineers. Bill Putnam didn't design that LA to work this way. To find out that it would still do something useful with all buttons pushed in was a fortunate coincidence. However, the truth is: That mode sounds like shit. It CAN be a funny, brutal SFX but it never would be accepted as an improvement of the original sound. That's why the all-buttons-in mode is only used as a parallel compression trick. To see a 1176 style LA just as a smashing device would be really unprofessional. The reason this unit became so popular is its fast FET attack time. So, if someone says the all-buttons-in mode is one of the main reasons why one would want to get one I seriously wonder if this person really understands what this compressor is all about.

You were so eager to correct him that you obviously didn't have the time to rewind and listen again. And actually WATCH those buttons. You even didn't read my answer properly. It Dos't have any Harmonic Distorsion - it just Compress The sound :D

      Which actually makes it perfect for pop, hip hop and r&b vocals. Only on rock vocal do you want the distortion. So it really depends.

    Hello Marty can I use this unit as mastering compressor (if I combine two unit as stereo)

    • @Jimbo386000

      I’m not Marty, but I don’t see why not. It will not be transparent like most mastering compressors, but if you’re looking for the not-transparent sound than you definitely can use a pair as mastering compressors. I would suggest to use lower ratios and medium attack and release settings to get the smoothest sound possible, but you should experiment on your own to find the best settings for mastering. I hope you get good sounds with it!

      gurinder singh Haha you’re welcome man. You actually kinda gave me an idea to experiment with these on a master chain as well. I normally use the FF Pro C plugin cause it’s very transparent, but this might add some cool character.

      One remark: it's possible that having two of them in stereo operation might lead to some undesired results as they aren't stereo-linkable, so each channel will be processed entirely independent from each other.
      It might happen that due to slight differences in the compressor settings (as it's virtually impossible to have both units set to exactly the same values), tolerances of the electronic components and minute volume differences of the left and right channels, both stereo channels could be compressed with different intensities, thus leading to certain imbalances of the stereo field.
      The differences might or might not be disruptively big, since this isn't really foreseeable, I'd rather recommend to convert the LR stereo signal into a mid/side signal inside of your DAW, send it to the comps and then send it back to the DAW where the M/S signal would be converted into a regular L/R stereo one again.
      This should ensure a more balanced sound despite any possible differences between both compressors (because comp 1 processes the mono / mid signal and comp 2 processes the side signal, i.e. the difference between left and right) while giving you more possibilities to shape the stereo image (e.g. compress the mono part a bit harder and keep the sides rather "airy").
      There is a free plug-in from Voxengo which does the LRMS conversion, but I forgot its name right now.

    It does not sound like a 1176 AT ALL. The 1176 has that mid forward,crispy quality (due to the 1176 circuit amp), adds harmonics content and distortion that is it's sonic signature and why everybody loves it. I can't hear any of that with that unit... The KT is a transparent "boring sounding" compressor...But it does compress ! Anyway, if you're goin' for the 1176 TONE, don't buy this unit !!!

    The KT-76 is the McDonalds cheeseburger under the 1176 clones.
    It has all it needs to look like a 76 clone, but nothing that it takes to sound like one.
    For 220eu the UAD plugins are leagues ahead...
    This has no balls, no character and no panache.
    Unlike the Wes, that is the real deal
