The best ammo that there is for the 5.7x28mm is Elite Ammunition T6B ammo and is what I carry in my FN 5.7. Eventually I’ll get an FN PS90 too.

I got to train with the Spanish GEO for a few weeks (doing way more high speed shit than the Corps would've EVER considered letting me do) and got lots of hours of trigger time with both MP5's and P90's. As buttery smooth as the MP5 was, the P90 was even wilder. Almost can't even feel the recoil. Best 3 weeks of my entire enlistment. 5.7 FUCKS

@@andresmartinezramos7513 It was the GEO, my platoon was in Rota and a contractor at the embassy in Spain set it up. I was a lowly Lance Corporal at the time, how it all came together was above my pay grade, all I know is I got to go shoot a lot of exotic shit and had a blast.
Besides price, the lack of available platforms really holds the 5.7 back. That said, I do enjoy shooting 5.7 when I'm feeling independently wealthy.
The platform’s are expanding, I think we will see a good handful of weapons chambered in 5.7 within the next year or less.
There are already guns from FN (of course), Ruger, CMMG, Kel-Tec, and PSA - and trust me, more are on the way including another carbine - possibly this year.

Who cares how it performs against 9mm. How does it stack up against 10 mm? I mean, now that you can buy a 10 mm carbine from Hipoint for cheap, and arguably make it look just as sci-fi as a P90 with a little lipstick on a pig (bullpup stock), isn’t that now a valid comparison? I bet the 10 mm could do it better while being cheaper.
I’m hearing a lot about the high cost of the 5.7 ammo however I just paid 24.50 per box of 50 by Fiocchi. I only paid $17 for 9mm however that’s not that big of a deal breaker. It’s a lot cheaper than my 38s or 357 plus the 5.7 is a real fun round to shoot in my opinion. Just my 2 cents worth of opinion for today. Thanks

In 1993 I had a chance as a Firearms Toolmark examiner (ballistics experts for you Americans) to observe testing of this round in ballistic gelatin after penetrating soft body armor and was impressed with its performance. In fact Dr Fakler of the IWBA was present also. Lets be clear, the permanent wound cavity isn't as impressive as 9mm but then when there is soft body amour the is NO wound cavity from 9mm. In a world where some people use 25 ACP, 32 ACP, even 22LR as a defensive cartridge, this caliber must be considered better than those. Also, don't discount the reduced recoil of the round compared to 9mm. It makes it easier to make hits with and makes follow up shots quicker. I don't know how it handles vehicle glass of metal compared to 9mm, but it should do fine through clothing even heavy winter outerwear. Like everything in life, nothing is perfect and you have to decide for yourself if its something you would consider.
What's the suggested measurement for gel testing without clothing? 14-20 inches?
@@bmx7596 If memory serves me the original FBI protocol was using 4 layers of denim. I don't remember if there were numbers for "naked" gelatin.
An FTE is NOT a forensic ballistician/ shooting reconstructionist.
The wound cavity I have seen on youtube, the 5.7 is by far superior. It leaves a wound channel nearly the size of a 12 oz can from what I think is called the hydro-static shock (I think that is the term). Its not the impact that is so bad, but the vacuum it creates literally opening up the body, like pushing a pipe through it. Kentucky Ballistics has a video comparing it to other rounds. The 5.7 is no joke. It is superior to the 9mm in many instances.

The biggest complaint I’ve heard from owners is always the grip size. To which I say lets go full alternate dimension and remake the C96 broomhandle in 5.7.
Dimonback DBX is close, it also uses any AR type grip.

Happy to see so many companies getting into 5.7, it gives me hope that someday soon ammo will be plentiful and cheap because that is what keeps mine in the safe more than 9mm & 40
Totally agree. We're very invested in 9mm for our standard round. Still, I do like the 5.7mm. We tend to keep our rounds light with the belief that speed is what penertrates.

This. I have a SBR'd PS90 that I LOVE, but almost never get to shoot. Ammo's impossible to find, and when you CAN find it it's running like a dollar a round.
.40 is kinda a dead round it seems, not much new coming out in it. Maybe 5.7 can be manufactured more as companies tool down .40 machines

Being 74 years old and hunted and fished my whole life. One of my true loves has been ground squirrels. A long time ago I bought a Thompson Contender which is a single shot break- open pistol in the 221 Fireball firing a centerfire bullet weighing 40 gr at 2600 fps with the 2 power scope having shot coyotes, squirrels and a few others can only say I never had to fire a second shot. The 22- 250 is a real tackdriver and have shot coyotes out to 450 yards. These ranges were used only in the west as wide open range and multiple hill side shots can be seen everywhere. Being a varmint hunter has always been a benefit when I have shot deer, boars, bear and moose, basically because of think small aim small. All of the big game I’ve taken were at the neck just as it enters the rib cage or high shoulder forward edge, hitting that area allows bone fragments to act as shrapnel hitting the spine- all were shots that dropped them were they stood. In Alaska often you allow the animal to be standing on a very small piece of land just out of the water and drop them there as if you had to get an 800 pound animal from 2 feet of water- it’s much more difficult than you might think
The first gun I ever purchased was a FN 5.7. I loved that gun, put alot of rounds through it. Shot like a lazer with the FN ammo, it hated the American Eagle stuff. The only issue I ever had was a few failures to extract. I polished the chamber and that went away. I make sure to do that on all of my pistols now.
Bought the FN five seven hand gun when they were first released. Loved it. The 8" flame with every shot was shocking. Bought the rifle soon after. My biggest complaint was ammo cost and reloading time.

You need to do gel tests with the custom rounds of 5.7. Like the T6B/black dragon fang, and vanguards 3 leaf blade hallow point, and the 5.7 tsx round. Those will do better wounding and penetration.
The high velocity prefragmented rounds are vicious little bastards, they look awesome too. I couldn't find any in stock so I had to get some on auction for what ended up being $6 a round but I don't regret it.
@@morgatron4639 what rounds? Elite has been shit with making excuses since covid happened. They having no stock is blatant bullshit and their prices when they have them in stock for all of 10 minutes are drastically inflated. I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually difficult to get quality copper to make ammo during the first year or so during shut downs but Vanguard has had a lot of rounds in stock and hasn't been charging insane mark ups so I call bullshit on elites exuses.
Vanguard has had on and off in tock on black fang bullets with a fairly good amount of bullets for sale each time. They also haven't drastically increased prices. So, I don't believe elite that copper is that hard to find and that over priced. I don't know what the issue is but it's not copper being hard to get and prices being too much.
I really want some T6B ammo because some say it's better and I want some for self-defense and to test vs black fang.
The pandemic really effected the the production of 5.7 ammo at Elite ammo great group of people over there too I ordered 4 boxes at their regular price $56 if I’m not mistaken I have 7 boxes total you can’t find it anywhere now I saw 2 T6B auctions on Gunbroker they were asking for $300 for one box

I like the speed of the 5.7 and the fact that a small case or "Bug-Out-Bag" can have several hundred rounds of ammo. I have reloaded several thousand rounds of 5.7 the only problem I ran into was a lack of load data to help guide me on which powder and which bullet gave to best results. That was several years ago, so if any one has found a super reload combination please share it. I hope the 5.7 will become more popular with more manufacturers producing high quality affordable weapons.

Can you test muzzle velocity? You could compare that and bullet weight with manufactured ammo speeds, and aim for their loads
On the mention of SB193 subsonics. Energy wise, true you only have .22lR energies, but you have way better bullet construction, and that bullet does infact penetrate soft armor. That won't happen from a .22lR :D

I knew I'd see you here! While typing this just heard James' mention of you hahaha. Just sitting here petting my Ruger 57 and telling it how great it is while watching this.
Ive used 5.7 from 10-40 yds on ferrel hogs, last time was with my ruger I think. Can attest it does create a rifle like wound cavity. I also use a 9x25 Dillion with 90's and it does similar damage.
What ammo are you using?
@@mikesmith7497 I shoot factory FN and I also reload with the 36gr varmint grenade and Lehigh's..hogs have a small vital region comparatively speaking but if you can drop one of these pills in there it does the job. I wasn't a believer in this cartridge until I saw that first hand.

I absolutely LOVE my 5.7. Albeit a Ruger not FN it still is the smoothest running weapon I have ever owned. In the area of rapid fire or having to put several vollies of multiple rounds in short order, this weapon is unbelievable. Large dove tail rear sight and high-viz front post make sighting very good along with the very low recoil, re-acquiring your target is very quick.
I bought mine way back when, loved it then, love it now. Kept it thru the 22 mag BS. My 5.7 is like magic
. it always hits what intended. Shot a ground squirrel just this morning. This thing is spot on. Too big to carry and kinda bulky, but for on the farm, in the jeep or with you on the tractor, wow.
All of that is true, and i also like the 5.7, however out on the farm or in the trails I would not want to count on 5.7 to defend me against predators. That bullet is just too light if you want it as defense again at cougars or whatever

@@randalthor6872 5.7 is significantly better than 22 mag. I have chronographed it myself. 40 grains out of a 5 inch pistol leaves muzzle at just over 1200 fps for 22 mag. 5.7 on the other hand, sends that same 40 grains at 1700 fps for a 5 inch pistol, and that is just normal 5.7 ammo, not even the hotter stuff. Its also not rimfire so it is more reliable. We are still talking about less energy than a 9mm, but the 5.7 is alot more powerful than 22 mag.
I had a two tone FDE and black 5.7 mark 2 back in 2014 and sold it to a friend because of the ammo. I miss that gun from time to time and I must say it had the best and easiest tear down process of any pistol I have owned. Every pistol maker should strive to be as easy to take apart as the 5.7.

My baseless opinion; 5.7 is a badass cartridge and the FN FiveseveN is an awesome pistol. Very comfortable pistol, ergonomics are intuitive and the fact that they're not traditional does not hinder performance. With such light recoil, follow up shots can be faster and more accurate than 9mm. Meaning, even if your opponent has armor, you can shoot between and around that with four or five shots before a 9mm or .45 has put three shots down center mass. Capacity is huge. I love the pistol, I like the cartridge. The thing about gel tests is they show just one shot. Putting 10-20 rounds into target will have a very different effect than just one bullet.

It's a deadly round. There was a hijacker in South America who was shot through his vest and into his heart by the 5.7 bullet. One of my co-workers almost cut a hog in half with his PS-90. The main problem I see (besides the price) though, is that you can't get those military rounds anymore. I mean, I can with a letterhead, but it isn't sold to the public anymore, kinda defeating the whole point of getting it.
Why I love the FN-57 is that with the extended mags, you get 30+1 bullets that are as fast as an intermediate-cartridge rifle round, penetrate 9mm/.45ACP armor, all in a handgun. Fast also means less leading for moving targets at a distance. Lower recoil too.
Yes, it´s simply an update to 9mm, it is the better round.
Most 5.7 won't pierce body armor.

@GrumpyNCO 5.7 penetrates soft body armor better than any other common pistol caliber. No commonly used pistol calibers will penetrate today's hard plates, unless ya got some pretty exotic ammo. What percentbof home intruders are wearing level 3A plates? Level 3a battle helmets, cuz at close range, with my 5.7, I am head shooting.

I was extremely ready to go full 5.7 when it first came out but it has never really caught on. Finding ammo and cost really held me back. I did end up getting a 5.7 AR-15 upper that takes P90 magazines but I never shoot it because of my previous reasons. The simple fact that it is now a NATO round will help with everything but I doubt it will go anywhere. It needed to he NATO from day one. I truly hope I am wrong so that I can finally justify getting a pistol chambered in 5.7.
I recently picked up the PSA 5.7 Rock, and am absolutely in love with it. I also remember when the U.S Army was conducting testing for a replacement to the 5.56, I was lucky enough to have been one of many Soldiers who were able to fire and give review of the full auto version of the FN-PS90. I thought the platform was very cool looking and fired reliably. The thing I couldn’t wrap my head around was the polymer magazines and the 90’ rotation of the feeding mechanism. Ultimately amongst U.S Army and DOD evaluations, those two things is what got the platform the NO-GO and prevented it from being fielded and adopted by the U.S Military. Due to a better understanding then I had then, I am actively seeking out the Kel-Tec variant to add to my Collection. I also attempted to convince my current superiors to allow me to use my 5.7 as Duty weapon, and the reply I got was, “it’s to fast and and has a greater chance of creating unnecessary Collateral damage.”
Bullet composition matters more than speed. Sad your superiors don't understand that. Standard loads don't put it much faster than 10mm or .357 sig. When even the most penetrating round (ss190) hits flesh, it dumps energy. Been a fan on 5.7 since the late 90s.
If you're L.E.O., just so you know, Speer just started making a *pistol-only* Gold Dot load for the 5.7x28!
As soon as I can get a PSA Rock, I'm buying some. I wouldn't wait until then, but I've bought ammo before firearm before, and firearm price always seems to climb like a rocket as soon as I've made my first purchase.

Are you referring to the original FN-P90? The S in PS90 stands for semiautomatic.

Two things that would be interesting:
A Kriss Vector in 5.7, and a 5.7 with an internal structure like a 7N6.
And a glock in 5.7, since the kriss is basically a glock

SS197 will get about 1700+ fps from a FiveSeven.
Your velocity is largely determined by the chamber pressure and sectional density.
_(obviously, pressure / inch vs mass / inch)_
_(the other factor is your case volume to bore volume - pressure)_
Rounds like 5.7 are dependent on low sectional densities.
For reference, 40gr .224 has an SD of .114 which is close to 100gr 9mm _(.113)_

Corbon’s Powerball _(100gr +P 4” barrel)_ is marketed at 1475 fps.
The FN FiveSeven has a 4.8” barrel.
One of the things that got me to look at 5.7 was the p90. The p90 was truly a marvel of engineering and upped the game for PDW standards.
The P90 is and will always be my favorite PDW. Too bad not even the PS90 is legal in my country.

My how times have changed! Five years ago EVERYBODY dissed the 5.7 at every turn, now suddenly it's the cat's meow! I've been hand loading superior performance ammo for my 5.7 handguns for a decade now and would never go back to the 9mm as a full-size carry option. Certainly in sub-compact the 9 gets the nod for compactness.

Everything is a tradeoff. People get hung up in metrics and weaknesses and fail to consider the intended goal and the package. Just like LPVOs, not as good as a red dot for 1x, not as good as a normal scope for 8 or 10x, but when considered as a package they are a hard to beat option. 5.7 is powerful enough, accurate, low recoil, high capacity and has enhanced range vs 9mm.
One issue is that the 5.7 is allegedly very loud. This is typical of high-pressure cartridges in short barrels. 9mm itself is already quite loud, enough to potentially cause permanent hearing loss or tinnitus even in a single DGU where one does not have the opportunity to apply earpro depending on the number of rounds fired, pressure rating, whether it was indoors, barrel length, and other factors. The .357 Magnum was often eschewed for this reason in it's time, with many people ultimately carrying .38 special ammunition in their. 357 revolvers instead. 9mm probably represents the maximum decibalage appropriate for a defensive pistol. I happen to carry a Glock 34 with standard pressure 147 grain ammunition and I don't know that I'd care to carry anything louder than that. I don't want any fear, subconscious or otherwise, of my own weapon harming me to handicap my performance if I have to use the weapon defensively. I will probably still buy a 5.7 though.
Was interested in this round awhile back but the reloading issues is what prevented me from adopting it.

Yep, same here! If I could knock out a case of 5.7 like I can 9mm on my Dillon, I’d be all over it
I reload it just fine, just don't over clean the used cases and I use True Blue powder.....
Recoil affects speed. When running drills with a subcompact 10mm (G29), I'm just as accurate as with a subcompact 9mm, just slower. Hammer pairs are painfully slow. I would love to have a 5.7 for this reason. I want to send a swarm of angry bees downrange.
I had a fn 5.7 pistol. The main problem I had was finding ammunition. Plus the ammunition is costly. I bought it for a carry gun but it didn’t take long to get rid of it because of availability of ammunition at a reasonable price.
I made the same mistake too. I've still got mine but haven't taken it out to the range in about 2 years. Ammo is now available, at about 80 cents a round. I question the value of a firearm when you either can't afford to shoot it, or don't train with it because of ammo scarcity.

I would like to start by congratulating you on a well done video your ballistics are right on and thank you for clearing up the BS out there!. I have extensive experience with both the MP-5 and the P -90 (for the ATF I am a class 3 with all the paperwork). I have a very blessed and unique background with both weapon systems. I have to also say that in the beginning after exposure to the P-90 when it first came out I was a complete convert! I loved the weapon and the round, so as a result I have the pistol the P -90 and several PS -90s which is the civilian version with the longer BBL and actually better ammo performance, Then one day I tried to use it to take care of a nuisance hog that had been destroying our land. The dog got to him first and was lock up in a very fierce fight the Hog was about 275 pounds and the dog was severally outmatched. In the fight I got a quick window and used my P -90 and put a 3 round burst into center mass in the hog at point blank range. It not only did not stop the Hog but it ran for another 100 plus meters and began fighting the dog again when we caught up to it. Since I had to run by my truck I throw the P-90 into the truck and pulled out my truck rifle. In short when I caught up to the hog again our dog was in a life and death struggle with the hog. I waited until I had a shot and hit is with a Ruger 44 special rifle. The Hog taught me that a 5.7 is severally lacking in knock down power. My rounds would have eventually killed the hog but it still had enough life to run 100 plus meters and then put up a real 2nd fight with a very aggressive dog. That is a complete fail to me. Before anyone says round placement 2 of the 3 rounds were lung shots.
That's the funny thing about 5.7x28mm; its fans will swear up and down about its stopping power against human beings, but they'll become curiously silent when you mention how that caliber isn't exactly known to reliably and humanely stop full-grown feral hogs, let alone full-grown black bears. I'd say that proves what the late Dr. Martin Fackler (a wound ballistics expert) said about PDW calibers, that being they're only suited for "popping rats in the dump."
I have an ex-Ranger friend who reports pretty much the same experience on hogs with the P-90.
If you are going to use the 5.7 rounds on wild pigs you need head shots, drops them everytime, 1 shot......

My two cents on 5.7, when you can draw and empty a ten round mag as fast as you can at a ten yard target and make the nasal cavity look like swiss cheese, gel tests dont seem as important anymore. I tried for speed over accuracy and the accuracy was still scary.

That pistol barks fire too and has to be the loudest I have ever shot. I have had people at the range stop and look at me after pulling the trigger. Upside.. 20 rounds is standard. Regardless - I think being on the receiving end will make you reconsider your options and life choices.. its loud.. plus most people thing you are our or low after around 12 to 14.. you still have a couple of bonus rounds for them..

@@catfishman1768 ideallly you wouldnt, but it demonstrates repeatability in rapid succession. Moreover it quickly shows that the 5.7 shoots like a 22lr and is childs play to fire accurately and quickly, even in the hands of someone who does not claim to be a pistol marksman.

For me the biggest negative is that blowbacks unless well delayed like the Banshee start to extract the case before the pressure is down to the level where it doesn't push the the shoulder forward. This along with resizing the cases works the brass to where the neck separates after a very few reloadings. The DBX 5.7 is a gas gun and happily doesn't move the shoulders at all. You can only conceal the DBX if you go full Book of Eli and get an M51 fishtail parka to hang it under though.
DBX is a nice little package but as you say, not concealable.
Or, carry a shoulder bag ( man-purse ). Fit’s rather nicely. Remember the “Postman” in “3 days of the Condor”….

Sam Fisher in Splinter Cell carried 5.7 in the FN FiveseveN as well as the PS90. Sam is badass in the game so a 5.7 pistol is badass.
I am a petite female, so gravitate towards the P365… the 5.7 pistols have grips that are to long for my hand to accommodate the longer cartridge.

I switched over a year ago and never looked back, carry a ruger 57 and have a ps90 in the truck, a second on the way.
Hit 3" gongs at 45 yards with about 95% accuracy with the ruger 57.
The ammo is $1/ea non sale priced but worth it to me. Destroys anything you shoot at, it's like a .17hmr on crack.

I really want a 365 sized 5.7 with a 4” barrel and cut for optics. 15 rounds on tap out of a reasonable barrel length should suffice for most situations that would warrant a pistol.

I've always wondered this. Why are all the 5.7 guns so large. Obviously, FPS from barrel length, but would it NOT perform in something smaller?

The length of the round makes for a large grip, no matter how you look at it... okay for a full size pistol, but likely too big for more concealable options.
It's impossible with the cartridge size, what you could get is something similar in size to a Glock 48 since the grips are almost identical, And they hold 16 rounds of 9mm, which would probably be about 20 sumn rounds of 5.7...That's just how I see it going with that cartridge size..

My thoughts on the 5.7mm as a defensive/offensive cartridge? Pretty much the same as any other caliber. If it can penetrate the ribcage or skull, I don't want to get hit with it, and neither will anyone else interested in preserving life.

There is far too much debate about terminal ballistics. Anything that will punch holes will mix fluids in the body. Anything inside your body that isn’t supposed to be there or not there when it is supposed to be will be a bad day. You put 8-10 5.7’s in someone and they almost certainly are going to stop doing whatever it is that they were doing.

@@Leonarco333 At the Ft Hood massacre, 13 unfortunate victims were hit COM (Centre of mass) and all 13 died of their wounds. Every one of the other 31 victims hit needed hospitalisation, even though wounds were on peripheral limbs/head only. The shooter, however, was hit COM by 5 x 9mm rounds and did not go down, until a CNS (Central Nervous System) hit eventually did bring him down. However, he survives till today! I think this basically closes the discussion on whether the 5,7 x 28mm round is more effective. [Incidentally, the shooter had very little training on shooting the weapon he had only recently purchased, and was not a front line soldier, but a member of the medical personnel.] Once again, I apologise for using this horrific incident as evidence, but it seems one has to get the message through amid all the ballistic gel evidence, which is basically flawed. Clearly the US Secret Service doesn't believe it either!

Great channel, i like your videos. One thing you allways forget to mention about the 5.7x28 is the light weight of the round. A soldier or a law enforcer can carry the double fire power with the same weight then with 9mm, that´s very important on the battelfield but also in ammo supply logistics.
You are forgetting that 5.7 is dangerous because of over penetration, so extremely bad for self defense and law enforcement as the bullet might penetrate the person behind the intended target resulting in a higher probability of harm to civilians, 9mm is low, with greater stopping power, less penetration, best for self defense and law enforcement, 5.7 in good only for severe cases like war and unorthodox situations.
@@shujainayat This is not true. A 9mm penetrates all thru a car upholstery included. Maybe you have seen to much movies, when cops cover behind a car. 9mm have much more power then a 5,7mm. 9mm Luger was rejected by the US Army because of lack of impact to stop an enemy. The US Army had bad experience in the Phillipines war due that the Phillipinos attacked in man to man fight. So the Army opted for the .45 ACP wich has more stopping power.
@@shujainayat gotta agree with @danijuggernaut here, not only that but because of the light weight of the bullet 5.7 doesn’t carry momentum like a 9mm does. This results in dumping it’s kinetic energy faster and results in less over penetration than the 9mm. If you’d like some proof of this, check out ballistic gel comparisons and you can see 5.7 form a cavitation bubble and explodes, penetrating less than 9mm which just penetrates and then starts to tumble.
@davedeville6540 the lead isn’t the point. All the lead is, is a transfer system. The lead is the toast, the energy delivered to the target is the jam. At the end of the day I’d rather have more energy delivered to the target with less mass/momentum.

I always said it would take something very special to make me change from my Sig 40 S&W and the 5.7mm is VERY special, unfortunately there's no 5.7 pistols yet available here in N.Ireland but my Ruger 57 is on order and I'm waiting like a kid at Christmas lol.

None of this matters if you don’t have the ammo to train with it. It’s an expensive round. 9mm is still best for an effective round at a decent price to train with.

I’d love to run 5.7 but I have a hard time finding it and when I do it’s limited AND it’s expensive. AND in a SHTF scenario (which is relatively plausible at this time) 9mm is something I can scavenge off someone that’s out of the game.

Both 9 and 5.7 have their place. It comes down to weapon and scenario requirement. Everyone seems to be into this whole urban shtf edc backpack rifle deal thing. I'll take an FN 5Seven with 10 spare mags in my edc backpack. My daily job (bus driver) requires me to carry a bag with stuff I need for me. Like headache medicine, water bottle, hand wipes, spare glasses, etc. No I don't carry a firearm of any sort. Canada guys. I'm a very recent convert to the FN 5Seven. As an edc carry I think it's way more then you need for self-defense but it IS the best combat handgun out there right now. What you had in your hands for this video is spot on and that's how it should be decked out for combat. Cause that's it's job. It does not get the respect it deserves. Great video.
Both 9 mm and 5.7 are very effective rounds. I would absolutely love to train with 5.7 but being $.90 a round it’s out of my price range for a pistol.

So even though I saw a used Ruger 57 for $530 the other day, I'm still holding myself back due to the 5.7 ammo availability, when I can get 9mm, and even 10mm for cheaper.
Good timing - I ordered my FN Five-Seven a few days ago (a gun I've been wanting for a long time). I got the classic version though (the Mark II, I believe), not the new design. I was able to find a decent variety of ammo options for it, from Federal to FN Herstal Ammo, but no cheaper than $1.00/round.

40gr 5.7x28 loads only hit 1700fps in a handgun with factory loads, some boutique stuff hits between 1800-1900fps, though. It doesn't gain nearly as much speed as the barrel length increases, this why it does well in shorter barrels.
Modern self defense 40gr 22WMR hits between 1300-1350fps, and picks up speed faster as the barrel length increases.
17 WMR exists, and is superior to both in every capacity. No one cares.

Bought my first 5.7 ten+ years ago, back when all you could get was the FN ammo, and surprisingly it has stayed the same price around $.50 a round, even when 5.56 skyrocketed. I can put round on paper at 100yds with my 5.7 pistol. I’m looking into buying the new M&P 5.7.
I can hit a silhouette at 200 yards every shot with my gen 2 fn 5.7, sounds like you need more practice. Changing pistols won't make you more accurate.

Love my 5.7's that I own, but the ammo cost and the gun entry cost is... painful. Been looking into the 22TCM 9R rounds and guns lately since the ammo is cheap and the ballistics look very similar. Especially since the 22TCM 9R guns can barrel swap to 9mm fairly easily.
Hopefully that will change now that it has become a NATO round.
but you lose spitzer bullets with the TCM...so the coolest part of the 5.7. How many other handguns have spitzer style bullets as standard? None that i can think of.

Seems like a great gun. I don’t have any experience with one but at SHOT Show industry day. The low recoil is a gift. The only deterrent from getting one is the availability of ammo. I always was drawn to the PS90.
I would be curious on your thoughts of comparing the 5.7x28 to the 22 TCM? Studying ballistics found that the TCM had better performance MV/Energy with similar weight bullets. That and the ammo was much more reasonable. Verified with SilencerCo that the Sparrow II will handle both.

The 5.7 does have the potential to effectively outdo and replace 9mm... it's only being held back by ammo price, ammo availability, and pistol options.

They will not replace 9mm anytime soon. Theres so many pocket pistols out there and 5.7 wont work for tint lil poket guns so 9mm remains king of small pistols for now. We need a mini version of 5.7 to compete with 9mm in small frames
I feel that various security details and special forces around the world being known to use P90 for the few decades that it's been out is a pretty solid argument in favor of the 5.7
I think that for conventional military usage, 5.7 can be a superior round. However, for LE or for civilian active shooter scenarios, we have to bring into account overpenetration. Not only are the lives of potential innocents are up for consideration, but there is also the principal that dangerous suspects should be neutralized and detained, not neutralized and permanently eliminated (not an LEO myself so I'm pulling this out of my ass)
@@munmunyee Lots of LE or even just boring armored (not ppo mos to time) are restricted by having to use a caliber that is 9mm or above in round diameter, presumably to stop some joker from bringing a 380 or a 22 to work? 5.7 is smaller than 9mm so you can't legally use it sometimes when you really feel like you should be able to. Obviously slick dick agency do what they want but...
In regards to over penetration, 9mm will over penetrate way more than a 5.56 round, 9mm over penetrates like crazy, thats why you just have to watch your background.

If you consider the ammo actually available for 5.7 it really IS the equivalent of .22 magnum. The ammo we can generally get are just varmint rounds, SS190 is great, but see if you can get it for less than $10 per round.

Velocity is meaningless without ballistic performance. So you penetrate the armor, then what? What if the bad guy is not wearing armor (more likely)? What do the actual ballistics look like? .22 Magnum is what they look like. FYI, certain 9mm loads (like Lehigh and Fort Scot) can and will pierce body armor just like 5.7 or even batter, and also have way better ballistics.
Have you had any experience with .22 TCM from armscor? That is a fun little round that sounds wicked and shoots fireballs out of a 4inch barrel 1911. Supposedly flying at 2000 fps

I think 7.5 FK might be a bit more future-proof. Would love to see a comparison between 7.5 FK and 5.7, and especially see what sort of differences barrel lengths make for each.

I use to own the FN twins and sold the pistol a few years ago. I made the P90 into a SBR (legally). Now my State says anything over 10 rounds is a crime. So it’s just sitting in my safe. I was buying cases of ammo from SG for under $20 a box years ago.

In all fairness, the more notoriety that this caliber gains. The more likely the prices will start to drop and eventually stabilize. Perhaps this could even spawn some new platforms chambered in this fringe caliber so to speak. Could you imagine a MP5 variant in 5.7?! Just think how buttery smooth that system would operate but I digress.
When I started this endeavor, a box of fifty rounds costs approximately $16-18. Now they garner at least $50 for a box of fifty rounds.
My economists crunched some numbers and here is what they tell me. It will take Palmetto State Armory approximately six to ten years at the current market price to recoup the investment cost of manufacturing 5.7x28mm ammo in-house with the help of AAC.
Now let's be honest, that is a tough pill to swallow for those of us who have yet to purchase anything that feeds 5.7x28mm.
This next part is sure to ruffle some feathers.
I know it sounds blasphemous but I always wanted to see a FN Hi-Power chambered in 5.7x28mm. Especially with FN's _new_ High Power that came and left in a flash. I wonder if we will ever see anymore of those in the future?
My contacts tell me that the _new_ High Power pistols (both FN and Springfield Armory) may, in fact, be a limited run. The industry has been eerily silent since the initial debut of both models.
Nonetheless, I look forward to the inevitable 'rise and fall' of the 5.7x28mm once again. It has always been one of those cult following calibers much like the .357 SIG and .45 GAP crowd.

With a proper projectile selected I do truly they could be pretty reliable in the terminal ballistics category, however I’m more worried with the current QC issues in manufacturing if they will keep up with production quality on barrels because, with that round I’m worried more about gyroscopic stability.
Excellent video as always James. I saw a nifty 5.7 AR at the range the other day. It used a proprietary upper that worked with p90 mags and basically just spit the fired brass outta the empty mag well. Thought that was cool.

Panzer Arms is selling AR57 Uppers on PSA, Mag goes on top and the cases drop out the mag well.
I have been 57 curious for awhile now. The MRD makes me want one. I can’t get a solid answer if the geometry of the MRD grip angle requires different magazines than the original FN. if the original magazines still work, than I can couple that with the CMMG as a force multiplier, and it cements it for me.
They absolutely do. The old mags just won’t fit flush, but they were designed to work the same.

Rueger has produced some pretty attractive 5.7 options and I'm really considering adopting it. Matched round and magazines for a Rueger pistol and carbine combo is looking pretty sweet.

It’s a pretty neat round and platform but I’ll stick with my 22TCMr conversion for my G17. Still zips through body armor and ammo is at least a 1/4 of the price of 5.7x28.👍🏻

For a real experience comparing 9mm and 5.7mm, you should ask older Belgian soldiers (those who served between say 2000 and 2020). They transitioned during that time from the P-35 (High-Power) to the Five-SeveN

Even before the pandemic 5.7 ammo was twice the price of 9mm. I bought some blue tip FN ammo right before it all happened and paid $25 a box. 9mm was still $10 or even less. I know at the height even plain 5.7 ammo was going for almost $60 a box. It's come down some but still not close to the $14-15 a box 9 is now
I find them for $40 a box and I’ve only seen the 27-gr FN ammo available for some time. I can’t remember the last time I saw 40-gr

It is just the economics of scale and good old capitalist competition. 5.7 is now out of patent and there are more guns that shoot it coming out which means, which means other companies will start producing it and competing over price point and more total production which will slowly drive down the price. Up until recently it was a monopoly situation where an FN license was required so they could set the price and since not many rounds were sold anyone making them needed to make a larger profit off of each one.
I remember when I got untipped under 20 bucks before covid because no one wanted it. I cant believe what they go for now. Academy now puts it behind the counter
To be honest, I've been considering getting a handgun primarily the Glock 19, even though I really prefer larger caliber rounds like the 45acp or 10mm. But watching your videos on the 5.7 and the guns that fire it, you've given me info to consider when I'm able to afford it.
Full-power 10mm ammo out of a handgun can reliably and humanely stop attacking full-grown feral hogs or full-grown black bears. I don't think 5.7x28mm firearms can claim that. Let that be another factor in your decision-making.

When I look at handgun calibers for self defense, I still see 9mm, .40 S&W, .357 Magnum, and .45 ACP as the "Big Four." I think these calibers have shown their effectiveness in all kinds of testing and in real life situations. If I were recommending a caliber to someone, I would recommend one of these four as a starting point.
I see .380 ACP, .38 Special, and .44 Special as the trailing three calibers. Looking at both the numbers and the real world data, these three seem to trail the big four by a little bit. To some extent, that doesn't matter. In most situations, a defender who makes good shots with one of these calibers is going to survive an attack.
I also see a number of calibers that ought to be as good as the Big Four and might be better in some ways. A lack of real world data about uses, particularly self-defense uses, keeps me from seeing them in the same light as the others. In other cases, the power of these rounds means that not everyone can shoot them effectively. The 10mm and the .44 Magnum are examples of calibers that might be overpowered for this use sometimes. I tend to see the .327 Federal Magnum and the 5.7x28 as examples that out to be included someday but aren't there yet.
For many of us, the deciding factor is how much money we have to spend on training. With limited budgets, we must consider ammunition cost in deciding on a defensive handgun purchase because we need to be able to practice more with whatever firearm we buy. Until the cost of this caliber comes closer to 9mm levels, we need to stay with 9mm because we can afford to practice with 9mm.
Beyond these issues, the 5.7x28 seems to be a great caliber. One can have a full-sized pistol with twenty-round capacity. I hope that they will make a subcompact that will be very easy to carry but still have an eight to ten round capacity. Even if the rounds are angled severely in the magazine to make a narrower grip, this pistol could be a great carry choice. The PS-90 is already a great carbine, and the round could be put into all kinds of other PCC designs. I would also be interested in a bolt-action rifle that would be similar to the .22 WMR rifles used for hunting. The greater velocity of the 5.7x28 would make this round even better for hunting than the .22 WMR. Maybe the power would never be enough to make this round legal or ethical for hunting deer, but this round would work for coyotes. If the round has enough inherent accuracy, the round would be good for rabbits at long ranges.
FN was supposed to come out with a compact version some years back but never did. Maybe that will happen now.
I would say the 10mm pistol round is the best, in a 1911 pistol frame. That's just my opinion.

10mm is really common. Most 10mm pistols can shoot .40 S&W too since it's just a shorter version. And you can get factory 10mm loads that are similar velocity to .40 S&W if you want something lighter.

I’d agree on the 5.7mm, I have an FN PS90 and a Ruger 5.7, the round is great, recoil is very light, velocity great for a small round, but they’re EXPENSIVE, especially compared to 9mm
no shit, 9mm is more standard and used by everybody. for a long time FN had the only 5.7 products. now Ruger has theirs and PSA has their 5.7 even cheaper with a 22 rd mag. once were out of the Great Ammogeddon, it will hopefully be in more demand and there will be a bigger market for it.
Treat it like a hybrid of 9mm and 22LR. Most of the time with many rounds, it’s devastating on target but you have drastically more ammo on tap and no recoil so give them a few and then reassess the situation. You should be able to put 5-6 on target REALLY quickly.
5.7 is to the 9mm as 9mm is to the .45
get a binary trigger so you can essentially do a 2-round burst
Assuming a guy is going to stand in the same place long enough for you to put 5-6 in him.

Thank you for the review. Knowing that the 5.7 has the capability of going through Level IIIA body armor like butter is a good piece of knowledge. I am not a fan of the round primarily because there is a lot of offerings in the range of 5.56 and 6mm. Again, thank you this was good information to know.
It is interesting, but considering there are several 9mm rounds tested to be able to go through various (but not all) 2/a and 3a body armor, I'm not sure it makes that much sense. Watching his other video, it was only the non-commercially available rounds that penetrated well.
Great video, thank you. My question is about over penetration if used in a semi/public self-defense situation. Is the bullet traveling so fast that this is an issue? I'm just curious.
That is always an issue with any round, I have seen many many 9mm rounds go through and through, as well as .40 and .45, 5.7 is no different except that it does tumble on impact lessening the chance of that but no guarantee. As always try and get clean background or to hit that breast plate.....
I was completely amazed when these hit our soil more than 20 years ago. I was actually laughed at by the shop owner where I got it (same happened when I was the only 1 using Vortex at 3Gun matches). See where I am going with this? Yeah...somehow I knew what was gonna be worth owning.

Once upon a time, I considered 5.7 as a WROL pistol for it's lightweight ammo and it's higher capacity relative to 9mm. But like so many others, cost and availability turned me off (combined with similar levels of energy delivered per round). 9mm does what I need a pistol caliber to do, and when I need something smaller, I go to a 380acp. The armor defeating nature of 5.7 is cool but I don't know how practical that is for me given it's other limitations.
It's a rifle buyer's gun. If you can't afford a 5.7, you aren't in the market for .338 either.

The FN Five Seven is also hammer fired. So it runs so reliably under water or when soaking wet. It’s a single action only hammer gun. It hits the hell out of that primer!!! Too many I own a Glock, and I know they can have a harder time when wet or muddy. The FN is much closer to that “Ultimate” USP reliability level than a Glock is. I love a Glock, and I have a Glock. I’m just being honest and non biased here. So many people are ultra biased over their guns it’s just ridiculous. I cannot believe 5.7x28 made it to NATO!!!! 😂 go 5.7!!!
Around 40 years ago, a gent named Joe Zambone released his "Mag Safe" line of defensive handgun ammo, which was basically lightweight rounds, delivered downrange at hyper velocities. This was at the time that experts Evan Marshall and Ed Sanow were looking for the best "one-shot-stop" ammo. In the infamous "Goat Tests" of the 1980s, the Mag Safe ammo proved to be absolutely devastating against 160-lb. mountain goats. The more recent Five-Seven ammo reminds me a lot of the earlier Mag Safe variety. IMHO, it shows a ton of potential for defensive use.
I still have some .40SW MagSafe ammunition. 🥰 it was basically bird shot encased in epoxy that broke apart once it penetrates a body causing many points of pain to quickly incapacitate attacker.

The 5.7 suffers from conundrum that many new calibers do...lack of shooting platforms, equals lack of sufficient demand to gain economies of scale in ammo manufacturing. The .327 federal magnum is a great round that also is hampered by few platforms that makes ammo pricey at times. I have a Ruger- 5.7 and it's one of my favorites.
The 9mm Parabellum/ Luger is a german cartridge. But as a german citizen, all kind of selfdefence is not allowed. Criminals are here the most important persons.
I believe Taurus recently introduced new .327 products. Like you, i think it's a good round, but wish it had more options.

Two crime cases, noted in german newspapers one or two weeks ago. A) A fourteen years old girl was raped and murdered by a man, who about fifteen years ago tried to rape an eleven years old girl. B) A twenty years old young woman was sentenced to three years of prison. She was sitting in her car on a lonely parking lot, when a strange man, about fourty years old, dressed with a Bademantel / bath coat (?) and having a cane , came to her car. She shouted: Go away! But the man didn' t go away, so the woman drove away as fast she could, and the man was deadly injured. You may see, what i mean.

Bought one (S&W) last week, was shocked at what a fun gun it was to shoot! I wouldn’t hesitate to carry this once I have a few more (thousand) rounds through it.
I think a chassis like the B&T USW or Flux Raider for a 5.7 pistol would make the ultimate compact PDW.
The only problems that I see with the 5.7 is price of ammunition and firearms. This may change over time but I also don't see the 5.7 being able to be put in a compact size handgun idk I think it's cool but at this time not for me
Back probably 15 years ago the PS90 was around $1500 at my local gun store. I could never afford it though. A friend of mine now has a store and got one in, being best pals he let me make payments on my own schedule and I am now the proud owner of my first 5.7 gun. When he gets a Five-seveN in, I'll buy that too!
He has had a couple Kel-Tec P50's in. I do want one, but not yet.
Hope you enjoy your PS90! I had always wanted one but lived in a state where they weren't allowed. So when I finally moved to a free state it was one of the first items on my long list of pieces to buy. It's mostly a safe queen but when it does make it to the range I always enjoy shooting it.

@@michaelizquierdo6907 my anti freedom state just put a ban on mags larger than 10 rounds. I bought a couple 20 round mags for the Five-seveN so that I would have them before they got banned. The new MRD version is looking very nice to me.
I heard about the 5.7, lol because a local gun store had a used PS90 and I was interested but, knew nothing about the 5.7x28 so I researched the gun and the round and was intrigued but, before I spent the money on the rifle I spent a third of that and bought a Ruger 57 and tested it at the range, outdoor range at my local Darke County Fish and Game club and of course started on the pistol range and got it sighted in at 25' and went through a couple mags and liked it and then started moving the target back to assess drop and I'm on the pistol range and it only is 25yds deep so I ran out of room seeing maybe an inch of drop and since this isn't mounted even that was questionable as it could be me so I moved to the rifle range and started walking the target out and I was easily grouping only about 4-5" lower at 50yds and again this is firing by hand so the difference could easily be me but I also shot plenty enough to feel that's exactly where I'd hit so aiming center mass I'd be hitting just above the bellybutton at 50yds and this is out of the shorter barrelled pistol so I was convinced I need to go get that PS90 so I did and it was fortunately still there and scored good, it had been two weeks since I'd looked at it and the price had jumped $150 and while the guy was getting it for me to check out again, told him I wanted it and just wanted to go through it real good first and he pulled it down and then pulled it up on the computer and said it's on my list I'm supposed to raise it's price another $200 and I laughed and said it's in my hands, too late. He laughed and agreed and it checked out so I began the purchase of it, lol started the background check paperwork!
I don’t shoot often, but when I do it’s 5.7 because I’m Gucci Rock Star 🤣 On a serious note, I am enjoying shooting my Ruger 57 and AR 5.7 build. I think it definitely has a place in the quiver and maybe even is a great addition to a go bag as a go between for the 9mm and 6.5 Grendel set ups. Just a thought👍
The biggest issue I have with the 5.7 x 28 is the cost and availability of ammo.

I absolutely love EVERYTHING about my Ruger 57! Fully loaded it’s lighter than any 9mm with larger capacity. And I’ve found that the magazines actually hold 21 rounds so with one in the chamber that’s 22 rounds before you can blink! I’ve seen what these rounds will do and they’re dangerous!!😎😎😎👍👍👍💪💪💪
