You did a great job. I really like that daybed. I made a couple outdoor couches and will be converting one over. I especially like the X boards you added for style. That really bumps it up a notch. What I really like is the style can be masculine for my little boys room. He likes cowboys. I think this will be perfect. Good job. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you! This daybed received a lot of use with 3 boys and we didn't have any issues. The base was very solid. But you can certainly add another pair if you feel it is necessary.
Thank you for this! Its beautiful! Do you happen to know what the measurements would be (or how to calculate them) for a full mattress instead of twin?
I used a regular twin mattress - it is 38"x75". I did add a piece of plywood under the daybed for extra stability. And because it was an older mattress that wasn't super comfy I added a foam mattress topper as well.
How would one make the legs detachable in order to increase its ability to fit through tight places? Or make the back removeable or the whole thing disassemble but still strong when put together. Also have a special spot that would require it to not be the full width a twin mattress, what would you recommend for the cushion in that case? Best way to add a cover for underneath if wanting to store stuff underneath that isn't seen? Thank you so much!
Can this be used in the backyard? I have a toddler mattress and this would be perfect but not sure how to make it waterproof. Subscribed. Thanks for this :)
Using it in a backyard should be fine! I would use a waterproof mattress cover (which you likely already have for a toddler bed) and then use outdoor fabric to make a cover to make sure the mattress is extra protected.
Once i learn how to make a straight line cut and Craig's pocket tool jig, im going yo create lots of things 😂😂😂😂 when that happens ill share it with ya. Lol. Thanks
HI! on the X pieces, the one end is a 20 degree angle but the other end is different. It would be really helpful if the instructions told you what angle to cut.
Good question - I don't know for sure, but all of the research I have done shows pocket holes are very sturdy. My husband and I have both sat on the daybed with no issue. :) I do have a thin piece of plywood under the mattress which also helps distribute the weight more evenly. I think if weight load is a concern, an easy fix would be to use wider slats - maybe 1x6 with 2 pocket holes at each end and space them pretty close together.
Edit - nevermind, saw the answer to my question in another comment. 😊 Great job! Exactly what I was looking for. Does it feel sturdy enough to have a few larger people sit/ lay on it for an extended period of time?
Thanks! It feels pretty sturdy and we have had two adults on it at a time. But of course the absolute worst thing is to have a piece of furniture break when you sit on it. I would probably just be sure to add a piece of 1/2 inch plywood under the mattress. That will provide extra support and make sure the weight is distributed evenly across the slats.
THANK YOU! My husband found your plans were amazing! He made three in no time! Yes, it only cost $50 for wood too. (June 2023)
That's great to hear!
I just finished a replica of this and I love it. Simple and keeps the passion for a beginner like me. Hats off Carrie!
Made this for my sunroom and love it!
Yay! So glad to hear that!
Bought the plans and made one for my daughter. Thanks for the simple project that is sure to get a lot of use.
I just watched this video on my tv but came here to say nice job! 🥰💪Cant wait to build this!!
So glad you found it helpful!
I just got my lumber to do this. So excitedddddd!
Nice! Have fun!
Clever mom !!! And great assistant!!
Well done..😊

Thank you so much! And I agree - it isn't overly feminine or masculine.
Love the style of daybed. Thank you and your helper for idea😊
You are so welcome!
Thank you, for sharing this! It is amazing and you made it look so easy!
Thank you! I'm so glad it is helpful!
Very nice, Though I think you need an other 2 leg for extra support in the middle of the base one in front and one on the back 😊
Thank you! This daybed received a lot of use with 3 boys and we didn't have any issues. The base was very solid. But you can certainly add another pair if you feel it is necessary.
Boy, do I thank you! I so needed this and it is so doable!
I'm so glad it helps! And it really is so much more doable than you would guess!
awesome build. It came out great! I didn't think of adding the x on the arm rails. Nice touch I will try it. Thanks
Thanks!
Looks Great! Love your son's little feet running by. LOL That is how mine would be.
Yes, he is always close at hand, wondering what I'm doing!
Thank you for this! Its beautiful! Do you happen to know what the measurements would be (or how to calculate them) for a full mattress instead of twin?
I'm sorry, I haven't calculated the measurements for a full mattress. The length should be the same, but the sides would have to be adjusted.
You buy the mattress you want to build for, or know 100% for sure what mattress you are going to buy. Take measurement of that and them build.
Would like to know what kind of mattress you used. I have a daybed for seating and not just any mattress works.😀
I used a regular twin mattress - it is 38"x75". I did add a piece of plywood under the daybed for extra stability. And because it was an older mattress that wasn't super comfy I added a foam mattress topper as well.
Just what I was looking for so thank you so much for posting this!
So glad it helped!
Damn you’re talented! This is terrific. Just what we needed to see.
Thanks!

I absolutely love this!!! Great job!!
Beautiful work!
Costs less than $50. Is that with or without the cushion?
That is for the materials. We added a twin size mattress for the actual bed.
Can this be used in the backyard? I have a toddler mattress and this would be perfect but not sure how to make it waterproof. Subscribed. Thanks for this :)

I’m making this!
Awesome!
I definitely want to try my hand at this. I was unable to find the link for the material list. Can you give me the link? Thank you.
Yes! All the info is right here: www.lovelyetc.com/how-to-make-a-diy-daybed-for-50/
Such an efficiently done project. Did you get professional training or self taught woodwork ? I love the dedication of your helper.
Thank you! My helper was so excited to help! I am self-taught, no professional training, just a desire to learn and a lot of online research!
How would you build that with woodworking type joints in place of screws? That's what I'm looking for.
I'm not sure - I usually build furniture with pocket joints like on this piece.
Awesome!
Thanks!
Once i learn how to make a straight line cut and Craig's pocket tool jig, im going yo create lots of things 😂😂😂😂 when that happens ill share it with ya. Lol. Thanks
Once you learn, you will be hooked. The first one is the hardest. You can do it!

The written tutorial may be more detailed if you want to check it out here: www.lovelyetc.com/how-to-make-a-diy-daybed-for-50/
Great job
Thank you!
This is great, thank you!!!
Glad you liked it!
Love it!
Thanks!!
How much weight can this hold ?
I don't know exactly, but we have had a couple of full grown adults sitting on it with no problems.
😮You are amazing
Thank you!
ikea sells "roll out" mattress slats you can use instead of plywood to help the mattress breath! $30
I wish you can make me one and I can buy it from you. You are incredible!
Thank you!
Do you have the measures
How much weight do you think this type of frame with pocket holes can hold?
Good question - I don't know for sure, but all of the research I have done shows pocket holes are very sturdy. Hi. What is this link for the measurements please
All of the measurement and info is right here - www.lovelyetc.com/how-to-make-a-diy-daybed-for-50/
New subscriber omg so nice………
Thank you!
Wish u could build and sale .
I’m so glad you like it! 😀
You NEED a miter saw for this project. Do not handsaw by any means.
What a difference 4 yrs makes.....in todays economy over $100 for the wood, etc 😞
Unfortunately, you are right. The cost has definitely doubled!
$66 USD before tax. Not bad!
Definitely worth it!
❌❌This clearly is not a “anyone can do this” diy......but good job
Thanks! I do think anyone can do it ...but you are right that this probably isn't the best for someone's first project.
Well done anyway!
*eithrer way :)
2024 price… $3500
I have $50 but not all those wonderful tools.
The tools definitely help. Any chance you can borrow them from someone? The drill is the most important.
That's so cool, thank you
Glad you like it!
SO GOOD!!! thank you
You're so welcome!
