I guess theres more than one way to skin a cat huh. The subaru fsm on the liberty with the ej255 turbo motor says the fill the coolant system from the expansion tank, then place both radiator caps back on and start the car. You then rev the car to 2000 rpm 6 times then turn it off and wait a little before taking off the radiator cap and then filling it back to the top. You do that a few times till the level stops dropping and then with both radiator caps on you start the car with the heater on as high as it will go with the fan set on one and then rev it between 2 and 3000 rpm until the radiator fan spins and then stops. Apparently it helps to have the front of the car elevated as it allow the air out of the heater core better (heard this on the australian liberty forums). I did this today switching from penrite purple back to OEM green as the purple had started to become discoloured with age. Ive seen some people use a funnel but (atleast according to the FSM) this is not necessary.
the liberties, atleast here in australia, have a line leading from the top of the expansion tank to the overflow tank at the front, I am assuming any air trapped in the system makes its way up through that hole, through the pipe and into the overflow. Also the FSM says to fill the overflow (plastic reservoir at the front) with coolant before attempting to bleed.
I aint a mechanic or anything but I did this today and then ripped it around the neighborhood for about 10 minutes after letting idle to temp and it didnt overheat and the heater core got the care boiling hot so I am assuming all the air is out of the system.
The way you did it sounds like it would work, I think the special Funnel works in the same way as the method you did without having to take the cap on and off. There is always more than one way to do things but sometimes the "subaru way" is a bit complicated. As long as it works it doesn't matter how you did it. Glad it worked for you and thanks for informing me on another method that works.
I just did head gaskets with the Athena firelock gaskets. I'm having intermittent heatercore issues with not blowing hot. It also will start to overheat after a while
Is your thermostat closing all the way? If it doesn't close completely then it takes much much longer to get the heat core warm, and it may never get warm if it's insanely cold out and it can cool down quickly if it does get warm and never get warm again if you're car is constantly moving. The thermostat must close fully and open fully. Ensure your bleeder is in the correct position (usually 12 o'clock) and make sure the thermostat gasket is properly aligned so the bleed doesn't get stuck on it. Some companies gaskets can interfere with the bleeder if the gasket it not 100% aligned. You could also have a blocked heater core. The cooling system has quite a few variables and some of them, like the water pump, are a nightmare to get to.

After extensive bleeding and back flushing I still get overheating on hot summer days. I used super blue coolant and conditioner from Subaru. Any ideas what I can do to stop the overheating?? Koyo radiator?? AnotherSubaru thermostat?? Another bleed?? Thanks for the great videos.
If you are still having overheating problems is sounds like something may be blocked up in your coolant system. It would probably be best to start with the cheapest thing and get a new thermostat . If that doesn't work then try a radiator or water pump but my guess would be thermostat.
2 questions. Do u have to wait for the car to cool down to take that funnel off? Also, after this process and running the car, should the coolant level in the expansion tank be filled to the top when the motor is cold ? Thanks in advance.
You don't need to wait till it is cold to remove the Funnel, just be careful not to burn yourself if the coolant is hot. I like to fill the overflow reservoir to the cold level when cold before starting the process, I will top it off when it is at operating temperature if it is below the hot level
Im trying to do it like you, but my coolant keeps running down and dont stop, and the white tank gets overfilled and it goes out of the tank…..what do I do wrong?(sorry for bad English)
@@TastyCycleI changed the radiator cap, and this resolved the problem, but now i got problems with the heater core 😝 I tried to flush the heater core, it helped a little it is warmer, but still not perfect😔 I think i need to flush it more, maby put dishwasher cleaner tabs in boiling hot water, and pour it in the heater core, plug it and let it sit for 3-4 hours before flush it again with boiling hot water and then bleed the whole system for air.
Why should the reservoir be empty when bleeding? And do you fill that up after it’s done ? I’ve got a 2.0 Impreza so filling from the top of the radiator
I dont know if it needs to be empty but it's not a good place to fill from because it's just an overflow reservoir. The best place to fill is the highest point in the system to allow air to be replaced with coolant. Which in your case would be the radiator. I dont think it would be a problem to add coolant to the overflow reservoir you just need to leave room for expansion. Hope that answers your question.
After a week or so my subura will throw coolent out of the top of the overflow. It's not sucking the coolent back into the system. I've had both the engine and coolant pressure tested both checked fine. Can you help me with this I've been fighting this for 2 months. Thanks
Is your car overheating when this happens? Are you using coolant or just water? If I had to guess based on the information I have, i would say that the hose or nipple going from your radiator to the overflow may have a partial blockage. The reason I think this is because the pressure from the car being hot is enough to push the coolant past the partial blockage but the vacuum when the car cools can't pull it back through the blockage. Like its almost like there is a check valve keeping the coolant from going back into the system
I've already took all the lines off. Blew air thru them. It's got a new radiator new too and bottom hose. New thermostat new heat sensor. Every few days I have to pump it outta the overflow back into the system if not it will blow it out the overflow.

Yo what intercooler is that? I struggle every single time to get my top mount back in place bc of the damn turbo outlet pipe being such a pain to get around the backside of the turbo. This one seems to have fixed that with the wrap around piping, no?
I recently replaced my radiator on my 2005 Subaru outback wagon. I am having to add water often. Did my mechanic NOT burp it? Could that be the issue? PLEASE HELP.
If you don't burp the system, it only really affects the cooling efficiency. It's possible that he didn't burp it and the air bubble is working its way out naturally and you are just having to replace the coolant that replaced the air bubble. If you have white exhaust smoke when the car is warmed up and it smells funny you may be burning coolant. Best thing to do is just keep an I on it.

I have to change it now because I didn’t know you can’t mix rad fluids, but my dads burning winter antifreeze fluid and I mixed it with 50/50 so I’m gunna change it now before something bad happens. I don’t think the funnel matters that much, just go until the reservoir is above empty right? I don’t fucking know but that’s what I’m gunna do ….

Some people are taking whole compartments of whatever the heck off the radiator and being super cautious with flushing distilled water and shit. And some people are just flushing it with literal dirt water….. Like what the fuck am I over thinking this ? I got a 2016 subaru legacy 2016 3.6r and I don’t want to fuck it up.

Depending on your bearing clearance you would probably be good with 10w40 or higher. I have slightly larger rod bearing clearance and stock crank clearance. I also have stage 2 cams from Brian Crower with double valve springs and it makes a bit of noise which is just kind of the nature of big cams and stiff springs
I can't remember exactly, I think I got it on ebay. It's made for a 06-07 wrx I believe but I cut a hole in the dash and blended it in with bondo before I flocked the dash

Im having same issue, thermostat is new, hoses secured, new radiator. Keeps overfilling the resevoir.
Any resolution to this issue? Not sure but Thought I might have a similar issue. Setting up for a thermostat and new radiator/ expansion tank caps.

Is it ok to mix blue coolant and green coolant? What might happen if all the air is not burped?
You should not mix different coolant types. If the air is not burped properly you can have trapped air pockets that won't cool effectively
How long did the bleed process take?
Start to finish about an hour.

This one can be a pain to install on the throttle body side but the turbo inlet side is easy. This is a grimmspeed top mount intercooler.

Subarus are a bit noise so if it's a stock block I would run 5w40,
