Brian not getting the fifth stone is emblematic of his struggle to try for 5 WSM titles... tried so hard but just couldn't. But who cares, absolute top strongman and absolute top human being and an all round legend. Respects to you sir.
I think his career can symbolise man's sisyphusian struggle towards perfection. He came so close to that 5th title so many times, and he could've gotten one before all the ones he actually got if it weren't for that sandbag. Maybe if he'd won then, he wouldn't have had the same drive to keep going and he'd have won two, maybe three times at most. Maybe he would've won all the times that he did anyway and he'd achieve 5 in 2016. These missed opportunities are not something he should regret. They show his humanity, and that he is not invincible or perfect. Ever since this year's contest ended, I've been thinking about 2021 and how, sure there were some abscenses, but he really came second at age 39, and he still had a shot at the win late into the final. I think he would've won if he won the stones, or maybe if he did and Tom dropped a few places behind. That's despite the bad event on the train push. Last year, he held the line and didn't let anyone who wasn't a previous champion beat him. This year, with some leg issues other than the already bothersome hamstring, basically everything that could go wrong went wrong for him, at least in the final, and he still ended up as the 7th strongest man on the planet.
From a certain point on he just became a social media professional first, and athlete second. He never got seriously injured (apart from his biceps tear, which fully healed ages ago), he was always the biggest and most muscular in competition, so there was never a physical reason he shouldn't win a fifth or even sixth title. He just never went ALL IN again like earlier in his career, which is what is needed to be the best. Of course he always had an excuse, another reason why he didn't win ready afterwards. He is one of the greatest, but he had the talent and opportunity to become THE greatest. He will probably carry this regret to his deathbed.
@@stoneeh I would say that his hamstring tear at the Arnold in 2019 was far worse an injury and one that he never fully recovered from. Brian’s deadlift strength really went down after that and he hasn’t pulled 1000lbs since. Were it not for that, I think he’d easily have another Arnold and WSM title by now

A true champion in every sense of the word. His contributions to the sport of strongman can’t be overstated. He set the standard and is a tremendous person/competitor. Thank you Brian.
I have to say that you have truly inspired me. I was on drugs for 28 years and I was doing powerlifting during it but could never reach my goal. After watching you go through so much I decided to get help and get clean and at the age of 44 I reached my goal. I broke the state deadlift record at 750 lbs and I can now say that I'm clean and sober and have told my story to a lot of people and it has helped them as well. You're a true champion and a wonderful person. You are my favorite strong man and the sport will truly miss you. Be great and keep inspiring others like me. Long time fan
That’s an amazing story of overcoming and reaching the top. Credit to Brian for inspiring you but even more credit to you for fighting through it and becoming an inspiration to others. I wish you many decades more of health and happiness.
Thank you for sharing this comment. Congrats on your sobriety. You're the kind of person Brian wants to inspire and you, in turn, can be an inspiration to others who struggle like you did.
Good on you, brother. And congrats to you and everyone that cares about you in your life, it means more than you know for them to see you healthy. Hoping you're still doing the work. I'm in "programs" myself, as is most of my family. Keep it up man.
Brian's legacy will endure long after the sports landscape has evolved and even when his children take up the sport, if they choose to. As a living legend, watching Brian compete is truly enjoyable and inspiring. He has rightfully earned and achieved all that he has worked for, and his absence will be deeply felt. Brian is a hero.
I’m so glad I was there in person was able to watch this. It also stunk the weather screwed him by him, starting with his worst rather than his best event, but when he could not lift that last stone, you just knew it was time. What a damn good career he had, and probably made thousands of people want to get into strongman.
Thank you Brian. My family has been following you since the beginning. My son has your autographed postcard on his desk. Great seeing the support you received, and that your family could be there to see it.

I hope I can meet him one day and tell him all he's done to help me but for now, I'm just happy to see him go off on his shield.
For the man that got me into this incredible sport I can't even express how much it hurts to see him retire. But at the same time he's done everything there is to do and has nothing left to prove to anyone. What Brian has done for the sport is nothing short of amazing. In the future there may be plenty of stronger, faster and more successful competitors but no one will be like Brian at least to me. Nothing left to do now but send love and wish him the best in whatever he does next, whether it's in the scene of the sport or outside of it. Thank you Brian
Thanks for everything through the years, big man. The stage won't be the same without you. I hope you move on to bigger and better things in life, and get to enjoy yourself and your family more.
