17:28 - According to Magnus Midtbø (the rock climber) it is for some reason fairly normal for people to have a stronger grip on their non-dominant hand. I dont know why, but I suspect from my own life that it has to do with the left often being the "supporting" hand while doing something with the right. Typically I do bigger movements with the left side and more fine motor movement with my right (being right handed ofc). Lets say you are loading plates on a barbell, typically for me at least, id lift it with both hands, hold it there mostly with the left sarm to keep it steady while using the right hand to line up the hole with the bar end. Honestly I dont know though, its just really interesting to me, and Ive been noticing it more and more after I was told.
i think it has to do with your dominant hand/arm being used way more often and also in a more "endurance" based way than your other. for example, i am right handed, but my left biceps is WAY stronger. But when it comes to endurance, my left biceps fails much much earlier than my right one, so i think thats the main reason. since your dominant arm/hand is needed for complex fine motor skills, its trained to be "softer" than your opposing side
@@omniphile. Thats interesting, I dont think ive ever seen any data that indicates you can train a muscle group "softer" at the expense of max strength though? I dont know, im not one of those people with a stronger offhand grip, I just find the phenomenon interesting
@@kvernesdotten it's not "softer" per se, it's more like that your dominant side tends to have less fast twitch fibers since fine motor skills are often times more endurance based. Think of writing, brushing teeth, using your computer mouse etc. You tend to use your dominant hand for nearly any task, and it really adds up over the course of the day. But I could be completely wrong, it's just my suggestion
@@omniphile. Yeah I get that, Ive just never seen any evidence that developing fine motor skills or endurance comes at the expense of strength somehow. Apart from the actual time invested in one or the other of course. But likewise, I could be entirely wrong haha. I did have an accident that caused me to live in a hospital for almost a year for surgeries and physical rehab, and when I couldnt use my right leg it caused the left one to be "over developed" according to the physicians and it far exceeded the right leg on everything from fine motor skills, endurance and raw strenght. It was, and still is, better than what my right leg has ever been. Bit extreme example and not actually a hand, but point is that one doesnt necessarily exclude the other. Or so I think at least. But hey, evidently the right hand thing is absolutely real and fairly well known. So at this point your guess holds more water than mine.
@@kvernesdotten ur observation could be because of the following: the origin of all movement comes from? right, the brain. its not merely the size or strenght of the muscle itself, strenght/fine motor skills are also determined by the nervous system. so if you stop using one leg, and only use the other one, the capacity of your nervous system to navigate the muscles in this one is way higher (u could argue it kinda doubles). i assume thats one of the reasons, but again, im not a doctor or physiotherapist, just a biology student with a fascination for sports and related stuff. my knowledge is big, but it would be interesting to hear some expert opinion on this. i might ask some friends, i will get back to you here when done.
Brian being humble by going 75 percent (if that) on the slap machine. He felt that 52 was ok and just to let the record holder keep his record for now.
That's not what it sounded like at 26:55 where he talks about being emberassed by his lower scores and needing to work on his technique. He even admits these tests brought out his competitive side so he would have been trying his hardest.
I like how much of a difference that small grip adjustment made in the output during that 20 second grip test. Really demonstrates how making adjustments matter in something like armwrestling. Not that you grip that hard in arrmwrestling, but its more about getting the superior position to use your strength in the movements. Imagine taking away 30% of your opponent while you get your max.
In the words of Eddie Hall when he went to do that pull at the University I honestly thought Brian was going to rip that f****** machine out the ground
I'm not some on who's easily scared... But imagining Brian running at me and screaming the way he did on that bike, that's something I'd fear to my bones. Gotta love that Brian is such a nice guy.
Absolutely love how well these test are designed. It must be so much fun for guy like this to compare himself to others. Hope they also do or did this with Eddie his forever competitor :D
What I really love is the techniques he used to increase his grip peak and avg. Just from one mild adjustment, he changed the output incredibly. You box??...
Most interesting part for me was seeing the deadlift pull and how much that hamstring tear has lingered in his max deadlift with that left leg. Really shows how injuries can affect long-term performance, and rehabbing is so crucial. Think longevity isn't about age as much as it is who can avoid injuries more than anyone else
Brian is such a talented athlete too, to be able to go throw all the various exercises and movements here because remember this is a performance based institute, not just a measure of strong man strength, it takes more skill to apply this outside of just the traditional lifting environment... Alot of these movements he did not only takes raw strength but also coordination and athleticism, his massive frame is really impressive, the strength combined with the skill and coordination is what makes him pretty much one of the all time bests, hes not just some short stocky strong man who is not coordinated, you can tell Brian has the power but the skills to go with it, very impressive.
Lol Brians reactions are so funny and humble. Ya boy just told him he can smash cars in half with his strength and Brains reaction is like "Oh ok cool." ::nods::
I can't even lie this might be one of the greatest videos I've seen from Brian. I mean we see the pinnacle of absolute human strength against UFC champions of the past and present. Brian obliterates each record and you can see his competitive nature on full display the whole time. We see Brian who even after watching him for awhile continues to surprise me with just how much of a genuinely nice person he seems to be. Concern at all times for those around him. Just a crazy video and it would most definitely be awesome to see Brian and some of the other strongmen come duke it out. Probably put up much bigger numbers with some competition.
My impression is that Brian's last slap wasn't at 100%. I watched it in slow motion, and it resembles the previous slaps, that is, without particular effort. I think Brian can slap much harder, i.e. twisting his torso faster and giving a loud yell like in previous performances. Btw this is an amazing video👏👏👏
Just think the amount of world records he could smash! It's also really interesting if strongmen would be tested like this ...then we can truly compare strength! And see how it evolves with each generation. Data gold mine!
I will never get tired of people saying something like " Oh wow we have never seen those type of numbers or we have never had that happen" whenever Brian shows up lol
Brian is no doubt a beast of a man. He could probably increase every single one of those tests if he trained specifically for them. No, never mind, he WOULD beat every one of them!! Freaking beast!!
This Man is Unbelievable he is literally walking through the UFC Performance institute braking every record as he go’s like there nothing more big deal & He’s HUGE!
Everything here has a provision when fighting btw you know the shoulder throws are important because you can see how well you can throw your opponent on the ground and it goes on with grip and stuff also the second grip test that was for maintaining it is also important when you need to hold the choke vice versa. Really great video here man.
Brian you are a rolemodel! I like to see that in every video you are the strongest as well as the most polite and nicest person! I admire your humbleness towards your surroundings!
Ahh yes, the very famous lift everyone knows about "Deadlifts from your lockout position with your knees still bent". Everyone does those...all the time.
@ABCD Rack pulls aren't done from basically your lockout position, they are done from just above the knees. If your rack pulls involve you moving the bar one inch you're not doing rack pulls, you're ego lifting.
Makes sense about the neck test though, coz you're not a fighter. Fighters probably train necks a lot more, especially boxers so that they can take that hit to the face and not get whiplashed back. Mike Tyson used to do those crazy neck exercises that look like he's rolling around on his neck. Awesome video!
his score was still the highest she'd seen, 400+ vs 350 or so that she'd seen, they do train their necks though, many of them at least, tony ferguson is pretty famous for it, I think it's more a muay thai and boxing thing, there's a thing called the neck trainer that could improve that, but heck francis will knock you out regardless haha, I don't really think it's that healthy of a thing to be exercising really, brian's gone this far relatively injury free, so he's no dummy
Golovkin also does a number of crazy neck exercises, shown on a video of him in the gym, including one when he's basically doing push-ups on the floor, but with his chin/head. I'd be scared to snap my neck, personally. 2 months later I see Canelo training his neck, standing with a bungee rope. AJ also trains his neck, lying on the canvas (intentionally this time), with a weight and bungee strap off the side. Not sure if there's any practical use for strongmen though. Also, the deadlift pull machine which Brian got about 1,700LBF on... I've seen Eddie use that in a video, so if someone is particularly dedicated, they can find that video and give us a comparison number. IIRC, Brian's number is higher, which if I'm not wrong, Eddie is going to HATE. lolz
@@wheelmanstan 350 lbs not newtons, he only got 91 lbs forward and 102 backwards, or else she would have told him he had the highest score and not told him he had room for improvement like she did, that being said, he was too big for that test, there was no room for his head to have any range of motion forward or back which would severely limit his muscle power, you notice when she described what the test was she had her neck all the way forward and her chin to her chest, brian was luck if he had enough space to move his head an inch forward and back, the same with the hand grip test, it was not made for someone with hands as large as his, they could have put a spacer on the front and back to make it larger in his hand and he would have scored much higher, if your muscles dont have enough space to properly flex or too much space so that your pressing against your own body its going to massively skew the results, the exercise bike test was flawed as well since it was not secured to the floor properly they literaly had to try to hold onto it while he did the test to stop some of the side to side motion and every bit of energy that went into the bike moving side to side was wasted energy that did not go towards the test results, if the bike were properly secured and could not move side to side then all that wasted energy would have gone into the final results, i was honestly surprised at the lack of calibration of a lot of the tests and also the equipment not being able to work properly with someone of brians size.

I really love how Brian is open-minded to try these things in the first place. Not many people are ready to work with sports scientists, especially champions for they think these people can't contribute but in reality, nuances are what determine the outcomes. I happened to use the same VALD Dynamometer that is shown in the video at a sports science conference today and I ended up in the 700N which is not bad. and regarding the landmine setup here they could have used a cushion instead of catching manually for that setup really stopped him from giving his maximum effort. As an athlete I felt if these rigs are really set in a way that can really bring out the best out of the people then that data will be really really valuable.

That’s a really good point

I don’t think so man he maxed on the deadlift and beat Eddie’s record for example

Exactly why, he said him & Eddie could. Have fun with it lol. They'd likely injure themselves trying to outdo one another.

For those wondering about deadlift, Brian got 7628 Newtons and Eddie got 7483 Newtons on his channel
on the final pull are they allowed to straighten their legs?
@@wheelmanstan straightening the legs is seen as a disadvantage because you can't put anymore leg drive into the pull. Straight limbs are an advantage in holding the weight for longer but for applying maximum pull you need a little bit of flexion.
@@shashishekharsingh4652 these guys deadlift more than they can squat, so straighter legs and using the lower back is probably advantageous to a strongman

amazing stuff mr shaw!

@@yinyang2385he’s humble, but no way he’s going all out on the slap. That thing is an injury waiting to happen if he does.

The man conducting the tests is probably considered by most to be a good sized individual, next to Brian he looks like a very fit seventh grader!
In the words of Eddie Hall when he went to do that pull at the University I honestly thought Brian was going to rip that f****** machine out the ground

This is awesome. It's cool to see his strength put into numbers with consistent testing like this.
When he was throwing that thing like a shot put over and over with increasing force each time. Absolute beast, just incredible
"You may have a career in slapping" Brian "Yep" 🤣
I will never get tired of people saying something like " Oh wow we have never seen those type of numbers or we have never had that happen" whenever Brian shows up lol

This guy trying to teach Brian how to deadlift is like teaching a swimmer how to swim 😂
To be fair he's teaching him how to do the test. Not deadlift.
Well he's doing the opposite really. He's teaching him how to use the machine, which goes against Brian's natural drive to straighten his legs.
Ahh yes, the very famous lift everyone knows about "Deadlifts from your lockout position with your knees still bent". Everyone does those...all the time.
The 18 inch deadlift is nowhere near as famous of a strongman lift as the 38 inch deadlift.
Itss all about the neck game 😂
his score was still the highest she'd seen, 400+ vs 350 or so that she'd seen, they do train their necks though, many of them at least, tony ferguson is pretty famous for it, I think it's more a muay thai and boxing thing, there's a thing called the neck trainer that could improve that, but heck francis will knock you out regardless haha, I don't really think it's that healthy of a thing to be exercising really, brian's gone this far relatively injury free, so he's no dummy
Stronger neck = Less chances to get knocked
That grip strength is crazy dude! Im only around 150lbs each hand when i was tested for a job, and was told that was far beyond average, but yours is crazy!

The dude is a monster!!!! He's great!!
