      He's living the life he wants to live in a country where that is extremely difficult to do. You can just tell by this brief glimpse that hes the kind of guy you want to be around because of his attitude towards skateboarding and life. He's not living for anyone or anything (Money/ status/ etc).

      But not in competition, keep it real, keep it about Skating, not promotions. Anyway, Chinese people do travel, the U.S. is home to a great many imigrants, so I am sure it happens occasionally that Cali residents should skate with Chinese visitors.

    • @ryanturner3673
      @ryanturner3673 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Charlie Wood Of course. I can clearly envison these guys kicking it with us at beach and it would be a great time. I think if the chinese government saw how awewome and genuine we can be as skaters in the place where it all started , it could be a game changer for those people overseas who are socialy oppressed.

    • @geo100020002
      @geo100020002 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      dont get it twisted now, skate parks and the skater movement are definitely growing in popularity out in China (since i was living there in the early 2000s) and tons of my local skater friends would FIEND to check out parks in the US. (Had a buddy take a trip to Venice Beach,
      The greatest thing about seeing these different cultures come together over skating and extreme sports in general were the few Kia Asia X-Games held in China a few times (Shanghai being one of them). I worked as a PA for the event and got to hang with Bob Burnquist..just for a bit...and a lot of foreign athletes that had come to China really were impressed by the turn out (not entirely just foreigners into extreme sports, lots of locals too).
      For me, the idea that social oppression or lack of freedom of expression at a national level thus impacting your ability to skate or not is sort of an overplayed trope about the west's commentary on the lack of personal freedoms in China. Personally, I believe China is also the country where you CAN get away with more shit because at some levels there's a greater degree of freedom to do things. Yes will the annoying bao'an (guard) tell you to stop fucking around? Sure. But this is also the place where you can roam around skating around and get away with it more than in the US in my experience (having concerned neighbors call on you or cops telling you to stop skating in an abandoned school ground).
      The CCP hates collectivization more than any particular issue. You wanna talk smack about the big daddy Xi on the internet? Sure go ahead, you might get some soulless 50 cent army moderator talking some shit. But no one will kick in your door and may you repent your western devilish ways. BUUUUT if you wanted to rally a bunch of homies and go out to the streets to preach your support of granddaddy Xi? Nah, fuck that jazz, ya'll aint mobilizing for shit!!
      So go skate and just dont fucking terrorize people (there IS a bias taht skaters are "wild" and "reckless" and "destructive..but i find i think most cultures where that movement is still emerging have that societal bias)
      Wheh, this is long AF. My b! Skate hard! Live long! Find some Chinese homies to skate with! They cooo!

      That's not the main vibe I recived from the video I was merely expanding on a single point that grabbed my interest. The main focus of video was showing off the pro skater lifestyle for Chinese pros and I concur that they live well, but could be much more if they applied themselves a bit more. The line between promotionalism in the skate industry and the sport itself is very thin, but if the right people come together and the focus on what's truly important in the sport i.e. spending time with your mates and enjoying a sense of freedom that only a skate board can give then its all good.

      But thatz the lesson: it aint radically different at all. Even politically speaking. China and "the West" are huge business partners after all...

    • @MrAllstar
      @MrAllstar 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a fair point but for your normal average Chinese dude on the street his families belief system and way of life is very different to the similar family in US/Europe/Africa etc.

    • @charoleawood
      @charoleawood 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TheAwesomeStuff
      Sure. But by shrinking the scale down from nation to nation and instead looking from neighbor to neighbor people are 'different'. Africa, for instance, is a huge place with many different governments and languages. Ditto Europe. Ditto the United States. No two people are exactly alike in their beliefs, there's a universe next door, even among the people of the religious congregation you may attend. The differences matter very little, however. When I watched this video I didn't see people of great difference to myself. Ironically, the greatest difference for me isn't natonality or belief framework, those aren't so different, it's that I don't Skate, but I feel I'm up on that skateboard or wringing out a sweaty shirt anyway.

      Don't just assume man, that's not what he is saying. He's saying that it's really cool that skating crosses borders, and even though people might come from very different backgrounds, speak different languages, and come from different cultures, they still have a lot in common. He's talking about bring people together, while you are trying to push everyone apart. Not cool man.

    Skating: One of the few US exports I advocate for every country on Earth, along with BMX if you can't skate well. Surfing has gotten arrogant, snowboarding requires cash, rap and baseball have had their time, and our guns'n'religion obsession has no more business being exported than Sharia law and AK's. But skating the local concrete wastelands is always a solid contribution to the youth of the entire species.

    😏great news piece of sports journalism on the skate scene over in China, I enjoyed a lot knowing that there's a dedicated Vans pro skater team put together to help the sport evolve, loved seeing bits of Shenzhen city,loved knowing the public places where skaters skate at and seeing the urban equipment used by skaters at these places,loved knowing about the surf scene going on among skaters and what not.Enjoyed seeing Huifeng having a chat with the cops about not being permitted to skate in certain city areas...All in all this was another great mini documentary made by you guys at ViCE, keep up the excellent work done to date and keep on coming up with interesting topics,subjects and matters for the videos you guys have been presenting us with so far,👌🏻🫡👍🏻🇵🇹🙋🏻‍♂️.

    Man I wanna visit China some day. It's dirty and the government is authoritarian, but the people seem very real and aren't obsessed with consumerism like in Japan or Singapore

      I've lived here 7 years and trust me, most are extremely obsessed with materialism and consumerism. China is not Communist besides the party label, but like these guys, there are pockets of counter-culture, albeit very sparse and underground.

    I live in Beijing, a relatively flat city with bike lanes everywhere. Skateboards as transportation have started to catch on a bit. I see teens on banana boards going to school or to and from the subway station, and middle-aged moms on long boards carrying groceries. Probably more a fad though. I don't see many real "skaters" except for at popular landmarks making skate videos.
