V3 Superchargers apparently are designed to have you seated in your air conditioned car while charging.

Because of your reviews I got the Model Y Performance from Berlin. I have made several long trips now with it. The last one was 520km at 36°C outside temperature. I was driving 170km/h+ wherever possible and apart from a slight performance limit (2 dots on the right of the acceleration bar when driving above 200km/h for a few minutes) there were no issues and I didn't even notice the slight power reduction.
Had to stop 2 times for about 15 minutes at IONITY chargers (cheaper than supercharger) and apart from the cooling running normally while arriving and ramping to max as soon as I started charging there were no changes from normal ambient temperature trips.
The charging curve matched your Google sheet and was actually slightly better in the high end (apart from it being limited to 500A in the low end, so no 250kW on IONITY).
btw: A/C was on during the whole trip and set to 19°C, even while charging. The BMW would have cooked me :D
This is what a car should be like. Get in and drive. No issues.
    Shame on you BMW.

Nice video @Bjorn Nyland! Good to see some real world testing of all of these EVs. At less than half power (for both the motor and charging), I guess it's NOT the Ultimate Driving Machine. I don't believe anything is wrong with the car, in fact, being a press car, you might think BMW would allow the car to be pushed even harder than one you might purchase at the dealer. At over $100k USD (what my local dealer is charging), with those issues, that's a deal breaker for me, and a hard pass on the i4 M50.

As an owner of the M50 i can assure you guys that this car in Bjorn test was not performing as designed because i did many long trips (over 1000km with 4-5 Ionity charging sessions in row) with my i4 M50 with even higher temps +35 degrees Celsius with higher speeds 140-150kmph and I didn't got any rapid gate issuse or power limitation after charging and I am using 99% Ionity stations. To be clear I have also Tesla Plaid on order so I am not "only BMW boy".I just want to point out that not all i4 M50 got issuses like this as you have seen on this video.

@@bjornnyland This might be the answer to the source of the problems during 1000km challenge as the i4 M50 you have tested was fairly fresh from factory. I think the i4 M50 you have tested also have this hardware issue with cooling and heating but BMW probably didn't know about this issue when they registered the car as the mileage of the car on range test is only 900km.

Bjorn, Thank you for evaluating the I4. Maybe you addressed this already, if so I apologize. My question which has been raised by others on this issue is whether there was a fault with the press car that you tested (hardware? software?). When you returned the car to BMW did you report the issue of overheating? Do you know if BMW then subsequently performed then a diagnostic on the car? If so, what were the results? If you don't have this information yet, could you go back to BMW and ask them for the service history on the car since you returned it. I think this information would be essential to prospective BMW buyers and to the EV community in general. Thank you.

When fast charging my Kia Niro EV (at a whopping 75kW), especially when it’s 40+ degrees, it gets REALLY noisy as the A/C is used to cool the battery. The BMW? Barely the sound of a fan. The difference is that my Niro EV was out-charging the BMW at times! That is absurd. BMW, you need to work on your cooling.

even though the chance of getting consistently faulty press cars is indeed very slim, I have to say we didn't experience this issue at all. Blasted from NL to south of France at 34c (so even 3-4c hotter than in the vid), arriving yolo around 3-4% at Ionity and other HPC chargers and the car charges like a boss - consistently 208 or 209kw under 30% then gradually slowing down to 105kw at 50% and then very gradually reducing charge, but even at 90%+ still charging quite fast (about 50kw). BAttery cools when charging to very high SOC. the last 30% is at low kW so slow allows it to cool back down. TB stopped at 50% when it was at a high temp. EV6 did the same thing. If chasing fast charge rate will always stop charging around middle of the charge. I wonder if battery type dictates this. Tesla runs battery hotter and uses cylindrical cells which may have better tolerance of temperature and the expansions it causes. Just thinking out loud.

After drIving to Sacramento about 134 miles roundtrip went to 350 KW Electrify America station at end of trip while at 20% state of charge. Got to 80% in about 35 minutes. Pulled around 185 kW until around 55% then slowed further to under 100 KW as approached 80%.None of the issues you had. Ran the AC while waiting in the vehicle. Hopefully this will be resolved for the M50 if that's not just an issue with your test BMW. Your profile was not started when you first got in the car to get the stats. Love you being objective. Maybe it's an issue with pushing it. Will look at the manual as you suggested. Hit it hard and tell the truth. Give the marketing people a true assessment to fix the problems. Good review.

It's pretty simple. More powerful electric motors are less efficient under normal use, bc an electric motor is most efficient at full load as long as you can transfer the heat away. The load is determined by tyres' rolling resistance and most importantly drag which should be roughly for both i4s. TLDR: The less powerful i4 is more efficient, bc on avg its motor operates under a lower, percentual load.

This must be a bug of that specific car. I did a very long (1200 km in a day) drive across Germany in June when temperatures were up to 39C, cruising at 180 km/h in Germany. AC whole day, also during charging. No charging limits, no power limits. Typically charging to 70-80%. You can find a report on my blog. Never seen that power limit thing in all 14k km driven so far in my i4 M50. Something wrong with the heat pump on that car, maybe clogged air filters or something. 64C in drivetrain is too much.
Also really sad that you did not get the latest 22/07 software on the press car. It shows kW during charging and also shows remaining batterie percent at destinations. And it also has an only fans mode.
The car *should* give you more info that this is not normal, but there is a balance between "all the info" and just working as hard as possible given the conditions.
Test it again after it is fixed and after it gets 22/07 software. It should also improve charging performance and efficiency.
