Again a great road trip video! Thanks! Bjørn really manages to reveal the "devil in the details" of so many cars that look great at first glance. Well, the i4 still is a great car, but that throttling could actually be a showstopper, not for all, but for some people.

What a trip! I really wish we would know the real reason BMW’s do this. My conclussion is not to buy/rent an BMW EV if you are doing long roadtrips, those charging issues caused many extra hours of delay. (In total)

It's amazing that you do these tests. It shows us the real usage of a car. You can't sell a petrol car and say "if you refuel X times the car will stop doing Y and to reset it you need to do Z". It's ridiculous. Thanks for doing these tests

I had the choice to buy a Model 3 or a M50 after my 2019 Model 3 LR. After 5min driving in the bavarian wood, I ordered a Model 3 LR with acceleration boost. It is as fast as the m50, is charging constantly fast, has no overheating issues, has the better Infotainment and is much cheaper.

@jellyd4889 no, it was a mountain race track, the BMW is too heavy with strong oversteering. The acceleration is very strange, you put the pedal down and sometimes it has a short delay. And when you stop, you can do nothing really new. I tested the car 48h.

    • @Scrap-press

@@sworksm552 The delay and/or longer pedal travel is caused by the eesm. Permanent magnet motors have better responsiveness and more subtle pedal calibration that's why you liked m3 better.

Thank you for again, a great road trip video! Also very interesting to see the charging limit, it seems that BMW is quite protective about the battery pack. I've noticed it with removal of sport boost after an ionity charge and things like the serious power usage to heat up the battery pack in cold weather. Lets hope BMW provides some more information around this.

I wonder how it exacly works so I can plan better? What if I only do 2 or 3 charging stops per day but are on the road for several days? Just returned from a 9 day Denmark -> Budapest e-roadtrip, in a half year old i4 M50. It's an amazing rocketship on the autobahn.
Used 4 times full AC-charging at hotels and the rest at Ionity and BMW Charging stops. HPC charged in total 286 kWh in 158 minutes, and never saw the throttling. When mostly empty it charged at 206 KW and many times the car was charged before our coffee break was finished. Drove at most 350 km battery and longest day-stretch was around 675 km in a day with a layover in Dresden.
Energy consumption with 133 km/h cruise control was around 20 +/- 1 kWh/100 km. On autobahn with 160 km/h cruise, average around 27 kWh.
Car is very stable and quiet at highway speeds. Android Auto and Tidal works perfectly and is overall great for e-roadtrips. Doing 1200 km in a day sounds like a painfull way to travel.

Dry skin in winter is due to the low moisture content in the air. Cold air cannot support as much moisture, that’s why moisture condenses on cold surfaces. In the winter, because the air is so cold, the air gets quite dry, which causes your skin to dry out. Drinking more water helps, but doesn’t necessarily cure the issue. I have the same issue, especially on my hands and lips.

Some nerd level speculation about the reasons for charging speed throttling:
Someone familiar with battery technology told me that it might actually be related to the large coiled prismatic battery cells BMW uses. This specific type and mechanical composition of battery cell tends to form internal regions of inhomogenous temperature and current density and thus inhomogenous charge, and can cause separation of metallic lithium. Rapid charging intensifies this effect, while slow charging or letting the battery rest at moderate temperatures reverses and mitigates it. So it would make sense to limit consecutive fast charging in order not to let this get out of control, to a point where it isn‘t reversible anymore.

This slow charging seems like it's there to protect the battery and thus bmw warranty from taxi companies and the like.
However, I don't see how it helps any of us consumers. If drive this much a few times a year, the degradation will be insignificant, but the extra time cost certainly won't.
And if you drive long trips like this regularly, the degradation will be much more, but you'd also be putting a lot of km's on the car, so it would be expected. Doing 2000 km once a week is already 100k km per year.

That Ionity is cheaper is pretty much the case everywhere. In Germany you hopefully don't pay the 79ct/kWh too. We have Elli here which is the company from VW but also works for Tesla and others.
In Germany we have like 50ct/kWh for household electricty, but with Elli you charge for 35ct/kWh at Ionity with a small fixed monthly subscription. And they guarantee prices for a year. Public AC and DC chargers are also cheaper with that plan than my household electricity.
And the extremely cheap prices of Ionity is also the reason why they are always overcrowded next to bigger cities. Same goes for public chargers, it's cheaper for me to use the AC charger 300m away than pluggin in at my garage. What a dumb system.
Nobody should use the new EnBW plans, there are way cheaper options out there without a monthly fee.

I think the car companies are just testing their tech on early adopters. There no way this is ready for a daily use. Commuting yes, but I don’t pay this much money for a commuter car. I really wanted my next car to be electric ( I was considering i40 - not an M or EV6) but I’m half way into abandoning this idea. I’ll take a hybrid I think and wait few years. Hi Bjorn, I’ve been a little bit concerned about you and your type 2 discharge issues. Now with your cracked skin I think you need to look into your nutrition. I used to get very badly cracked, dry skin on my hands in winter and I think it was vitamin D deficiency. The type 2 discharge could be related to folate deficiency and if you have that then you likely also have B12 deficiency (possible iron deficiency too). Unfortunately doctors are very bad a diagnosing these things. Their tests don’t work well. I’d still go to the doctor and get a full/complete blood test and other tests done. Talk to them about supplementing vitamin D and taking a decent multivitamin, etc. My skin still gets a bit dry in winter but it doesn’t get cracked and sore now that I’m supplementing properly. You probably have functional medicine doctors in Norway you can see privately. They’re a bit better than your average doctor although still not necessarily great depending on the problem. You really need to research for yourself and do things like detoxing, etc., to really benefit from your nutrition. HTH;).

Car is currently at dealership for diagnostics related to the key issue. i asked them to check slow charging as well. Love the car but so far a bit disappointed in the range.
