- Victor Davis Hanson joins Pepperdine School of Public Policy Dean Pete Peterson for a four-part seminar series titled "Office Hours with Victor Davis Hanson."
This set of special interviews will explore the class "Roots of American Leadership in Peace and War" currently being taught by Dr. Hanson to Pepperdine School of Public Policy graduate students.
Victor Davis Hanson is the inaugural Giles-O'Malley Distinguished Visiting Professor at the School of Public Policy. Hanson is also the Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow in Residence in Classics and Military History at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University; Professor Emeritus of Classics Emeritus at California State University, Fresno; and the Wayne and Marcia Buske Distinguished Fellow in History at Hillsdale College. He is a nationally syndicated columnist for Tribune Media Services.

I'm 84 & have concluded that VDH is someone who acknowledges his feelings but "Thinks" BEYOND his feelings & does so objectively & brilliantly. He is a most unusual "blend" of human characteristics!
In history, Victor doesn't just know what happened, he knows what motivated the players.
And that's a huge difference, anybody can recite dates and places

I have never been the kind of person that has been star struck with movie stars and never been impressed with many people, but I am always impressed with Mr. Victor Davi Hanson. What a smart, brilliant intelligent man. Alway makes so much sense. I would definitely would be star struck with Mr. Hanson. I could probably set and talk with him and have so many questions about life in general. Why couldn't Mr. Hanson run for President. What a mind he has...

I am deeply appreciative to Pepperdine University for sharing this Victor Davis Hanson series with us. His knowledge, humility and calm demeanor are character traits to be emulated in our society.
It’s imperative, when teaching history to bring in the practical lessons which can be applied in the here and now. Then, it’s exciting and an enjoyable adventure.
You can learn more in one hour listening to VDH than most high school kids learn in 4 years of history class!

I’m always awestruck at the depth of knowledge this man has to share for those that will listen. A true American icon and educator. VDH for president? Man is WAY too smart and has much more integrity than that. Talk about “draining the swamp” , would have the majority of the legislative branch realizing what pompous and corrupt fools they really are in a very short time!
Dr. Hanson is much more valuable just as he is, as opposed to being a president. Now, an adviser to an effective, responsive president…I could wrap my mind around this.
Ive been out of college for 40yrs. Listening to the calm, astute brilliance of Mr Hanson transports me to those wonderful years of learning. His students will always remembr him.
The depth and breath of his knowledge cannot be matched …ok, by Thomas Sowell, but can’t think of anyone else…❤

Having graduated from Seaver BA History and School of Business MBA, followed by 5 yrs working there before moving the Europe, I am very sorry that VDH wasn't there then. Simply brilliant. Very glad Pepperdine is making his voice heard around the world.
Yes indeed! America desperately needs more emphasis on History in our schools! For if we don’t know where we have been, we do NOT know where we are going!
How I wish I had been able to learn from such a person as VDH during my youth. His breadth of knowledge, wisdom and delivery keep me enthralled every time he discusses each area of his expertise.

@@juliemunoz2762 That was actually the reason for my comment. His lectures, talks supported by his books make all these topics he explores so much more interesting that I learn and appreciate so much more from the different perspectives he introduces to history and current affairs.

Most people accept that. But they are too weak and dumb to do anything to prevent it
That old adage sounds profound but is false. Actually, power does not corrupt.
The Lord Jesus Christ has absolute power, and He is absolutely righteous.
The extent of a person's pre-existing corruption becomes more evident, and likely more cultivated, as that person has more power to wield. But it was not the power itself that caused the corruption. Rather, greater power enables a greater display of pre-existing corruption.

I always make time to listen to VDH. He always has something Important to say and I value that highly.
VDH is a remarkable man. Broadly educated, profound insights. This man is sought after everywhere yet he seems unaware that he is VDH. As much as his wisdom I love the humility I see in this man. What a role model.

Dr. Victor Davis Hanson is in the same class as Dr. Thomas Sowell. I don't have great admiration for many, but these two are at the top of my list.
A country needs to have the most intelligent best educated people. If you have mediocres and incompetence you regress. And you need loyal citizens who really love and will be willing to protect what they have!
Wish I could be in that class. VDH is my favorite historian and intellectual these days.

I’m always amazed at how esteemed orators like Obama and Churchill read carefully prepared scripts, Dr Hanson just rolls off an avalanche of learned knowledge as if he’s reading a script. I think I’ve learned more from his musings than from any book

I love that the arc of VDH’s memory and understanding reaches far back in history to the present. As a Jew, that’s exactly how it is for me. He makes me less alone. 🙏❤️

VDH is the archetype advisor every President, Senator or CEO should have in his circle. Reflective, methodical in speech and based on facts/history...all good qualities in an intellectual confidant. Too bad our leaders of the recent past seem to be swayed by social media and pollsters.
Check out the comment section for any VDH video and you will see him called a national treasure. I think people independently arrive at this conclusion. When people leave comments, they think of the highest compliment they can pay him, and it just comes to mind. It's not how he is introduced, it's just how people feel about this man, and he lives up to it every day.

But I think I know why after the recent Uncommon Knowledge interviews with him.) Admiration & respect - for VDH (for the removal of doubt).
Chomsky? Listening to an anarcho communist, who’s known for his work as a linguist ,hypothesize about his hobby,self promotion and the destruction of capitalism,wouldn’t be my first choice.

The first task of any thoughtful POTUS would be to hire VDH as consiglieri, thus providing historical context for important policy decisions.
Dr. Hanson:
The first thing comes to my attention is how much common sense he has described with words and why it’s not the norm for everyone! I wonder how far we have gone to behave unlike the norm! Hate has no place in a society, but it has taken over in just about every aspect of our life. We need to stop hating.

VDH has mastered a thinking skill known as Integrative Complexity: the knowledge and ability to zoom out and see the workings and patterns that can impact the outcome of particular situations. This rare ability would make him a great President.
I love George Patton. He is one of the greatest generals in American history. I wish there is General Patton now.

Brilliant as always. It is interesting that in 2003 on the eve of the Iraq War, the Wall Street Journal reported that 40% of the U.S. Army soldiers were from the South. The Scots Irish world (and I have that strain in my life) continued in their tradition of defending the country when called to do so. Today they have been alienated by the Pentagon from serving. Defenestrating statues probably has not encouraged enlistment. It could have been handled with some respect, or at least less relish, given the deeps roots of Southern military tradition; the Citadel etc. There is a decadence in the military that is easily swayed toward everything but preparedness for war or its threat. Plato: "Only the dead know the end of war."
36:10 The development of the B-29 was a remarkable feat in itself, but the resulting plane more than likely helped end/win WWII faster than without it. It's main purpose was to be a long range heavy bomber. The plane was needed due to the lack of airbases near Japan. It needed to fly several thousand miles with its payload. The closest they could get at the time was to fly from mainland China. After several upgrades, like larger, higher horsepower engines, it proved to be a very useful plane in the war.
What a great series this will be! I would love to audit the classroom sessions. Hopefully, the learners will come out as better leaders and go on to produce better results.
My corporate experience has lead me to believe there is too much 'leadership' pushed on to every role and next to nothing on the value of 'followship'. If you've got 50,000 'leaders' in your corporation, you've got the unmanageable likelihood of going in 50,000 different directions. Sadly, I found that leaders couldn't make a clear distinction between leadership and ownership (this touches on what VDH mentioned about Grant's ability to write clear and succinct orders). Also, I could relate to the notion of having an open mind, to avoid not appreciating (or possibly fearing) what a others can bring to the table. It's a real blindspot to discount thier ideas because that person isn't what is the norm/expected (not the best dressed/vocabulary; gruff, curt or just overly passionate about expressing ideas). I say that because we were often hammered with the message to be aware of inherent biases, yet many leaders will discount ideas of others because they don't like (i.e., have a bias against) the person bringing the idea.
Long live VDH
You can train your children to develop foresight by playing a game with them when they are as young as 3 years old. What happens next? If you do that what happens next? At bedtime, what are we planning to do tomorrow, on the weekend, for summer vacation. You can teach your children to create a future they design, by their choices. Then they see in their minds what the choices others make will cause to happen in the future.
Military leaders have a different mindset about life and death. Some life is worse than death, and death to gain advantage is not loss.

Dr Hanson, add to your military leadership characteristics and qualities of the savior generals, the very unique and strange characteristics of the artist. During your whole talk my mind was screaming: the artist has this other-man and genius quality. I say this as a former infantry officer, and now an artist. We need artists to train our next civil leaders, and it wouldn't hurt the military leaders to train the same way. I don't mean the cultural follower artists of today, either. I mean the game changers.

Leadership is boiled down to take care of my men, get the mission accomplished and bring everybody home. This is the same thing that I learned as a Marine NCO some 50 odd years ago and they are the same, today. Leadership does not change, even though people may. My favorite example is LT General Lewis B “Chesty”Puller. I once heard, great men have great sins. My late publisher hated George Patton with a passion because he said that he followed that SOB all over Europe cleaning up behind him. I met Chesty in 1966 when I was a fresh PFC out of Parris Island. My late uncle served under him in the first Marine Division during WW2 and Korea.

Foresight seems to mean when someone has the ability to interpret a situation in the present moment with such accuracy and precision that conclusions can be derived not only about the present situation but the mistakes others will make in its analysis, thus adding a prophetic quality, but really it’s simply a very deep understanding of that present moment.

its clear looking at the state of politics in the west that we need more read and thoughtful leaders and the qualities that Victor talks about in these leaders are under appreciated and not considered enough. The hope is that the west can produce intelligent understanding leaders for the future, that will rise to the occasion while keeping it all together as western hegemony gets tested
Don’t ever forget that Churchill was an American and thought a lot of the time like one. I know he was a drunk but sometimes that is what is needed.
